Volkswagen to launch gas-electric hybrid next year

You can read a bit more on this vehicle in the BlueMotion press release

Volkswagen plans to launch its first gasoline-electric hybrid next year. The VW Touareg hybrid SUV is to feature a V6 engine, a supercharger and an electric motor.

VW calls it a performance hybrid because the powertrain produces about 330 horsepower.

The Touareg hybrid will be capable of driving in all-electric mode at speeds up to about 31 m.p.h. It will also have a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds, which VW claims is the greatest for any hybrid SUV.

The Volkswagen group had originally planned to launch a hybrid version of its Audi Q7 SUV this year.

That plan was scrapped, but a hybrid version of the upcoming smaller Audi Q5 SUV is in the works for 2011.
