“It feels good to know you could” – this is the message of the advertising campaign for the new Tiguan. The TV commercial is in the same tradition as recent Volkswagen campaigns. With a slightly tongue-in-the-cheek approach, the short film promotes the off-road properties of the new SUV, which also puts up a good show on the road. For the market launch, the Tiguan commercial “Girls” is to be shown on German TV for the first time today. This will also be the start of the entire campaign, including printed advertisements, posters and a special website. The new Tiguan is to be promoted in this way in a number of European markets. “Our objective is to give the Tiguan a younger and cooler position without sacrificing its high-quality image,” explains Luca de Meo, Head of Group Marketing and Head of Marketing, Volkswagen Passenger Cars.

The commercial was filmed for four days in the centre of Los Angeles. An area closed to the public near to the Californian metropolis was used for the off-road sequences. Actor Tom Astor himself played some of the driving scenes while others were shot with a stuntman. The soundtrack features “Road Song” by Flaming Wheels.

Immediately after the commercial had been filmed, the photo shoots for the printed advertisements and posters took place in the desert around Tekopa Springs and on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. The advertisement and poster motifs are based on visual imagery new to Volkswagen and also feature the motto “It feels good to know you could”. The start of the campaign coincides with the market launch of the new Tiguan. From today, the Touareg’s smaller sibling will appear in dealers’ showrooms. Like its predecessor, the new Tiguan is the only SUV in its class that is available in versions tailored for on-road use or especially for off-road driving. The two models are distinguished by different front ends. Both models feature greater independence, higher dynamics and more precise styling.

The Tiguan is one of Volkswagen’s most popular models throughout the world The highest-volume markets are Europe, Russia, the USA, China, Brazil and Australia. All in all, some 700,000 Tiguans have been sold since the fall of 2007.

On March 1st, Volkswagen will be presenting the new Tiguan in a world debut at the 81st Geneva International Motor Show. Global demand for this Volkswagen has long been very high with 572,000 units delivered worldwide. The small brother of the Touareg is now poised to continue this success with a new look and further advanced technologies.

The Tiguan is still the only SUV in its class that can be ordered in two different versions: one for on-road use and one specially tuned for off-road driving – including the two top trim level models “Track & Style” and “Sport & Style”. New assistance systems such as fatigue detection, the camera-based main beam control systems Light Assist and Dynamic Light Assist, as well as the lane-keeping system Lane Assist will now expand the range of available options. Also new in the Tiguan: the XDS electronic differential lock. In Europe, the perfected all-round vehicle will launch on the market in August. In Germany, it can already be purchased starting at an entry-level price of 24,175 euros.

This Volkswagen SUV has become a global success, on the one hand due to its technical properties, but also thanks to its striking and timeless design. Volkswagen has further developed its lines, in particular by front and rear restyling that reflects Volkswagen’s new design DNA. The new Tiguan can once again be delivered in two versions with different angle of approach values. While the classic variant was designed more for the challenges of urban driving with an angle of 18 degrees, the Tiguan with the larger 28 degree angle of approach will appeal to those drivers who like to use their SUVs on rough terrain as well.

Three of the seven engines offered in Europe – all of them charged four-cylinder direct-injection engines – are new to the Tiguan engine line-up. The four petrol engines (TSI) produce between 90 kW / 122 PS and 155 kW / 210 PS. The three diesel engines (TDI) span a power range from 81 kW / 110 PS to 125 kW / 170 PS. The 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) is also available as an option in the new Tiguan. All Tiguans with BlueMotion Technology (BMT) also have a Stop/Start system. They reduce fuel consumption by up to 0.7 l/100 km in the new SUV. Clearly, this Volkswagen – available in either a front-wheel drive or naturally an all-wheel drive (4MOTION) version – is one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in the world.

Forget everything you’ve been told about Austin’s music scene.

The 6th Street bar district is not the city’s epicenter for vibrant live music. That’s where non-discerning college kids go to hear guitar players still learning how to wield their axes grind out takes of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.” The venues that make Austin the “Live Music Capital of the World®”—outside of the SXSW and Austin City Limits festivals—mostly dot the perimeter of the capital city’s downtown. Bohemian South Austin. Rocking Red River Street. No-man’s-land North Austin, where each Sunday afternoon for the last 10 years, at a dive called Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon, you can eat free hot dogs and place bets on where a chicken will cop a squat, while premier honky-tonk practitioner Dale Watson croons in between sips of canned Lone Star beer. Spots like these are the ones frequented by people in Austin who know where to go to find good music.

The brilliant thing about the live music scene here is that you can experience it every night. Pick a night, any night, and the Continental Club on South Congress Avenue in South Austin will blow you away. Some of the finest musicians in the game hone their chops there, among them stalwarts Jon Dee Graham and James McMurtry (son of Lonesome Dove author Larry McMurtry). Their Wednesday night double bill is a must.

The storied Continental opened in 1955. First it was a private supper club. Then it was a burlesque club. Now it’s a destination for roots, rockabilly and retro. “In a city that has seen so many changes over the past years, it’s refreshing to walk into the Continental Club, which is sort of a time capsule of what Austin used to be like,” owner Steve Wertheimer says.

You don’t have to drive far to hit a score of other killer venues in South Austin. You’ll be glad you have the extra space when a stranger you’ve befriended at one show wants to hitch a ride to the next. Two sure things for that second set are Threadgill’s and the Broken Spoke.

The Broken Spoke is where you go if you’re looking for genuine country amidst a flock of two-steppers. Tight jeans low on your boots. Pearl in your shirt buttons. Perhaps a stain around the brim of your Stetson to show you didn’t just take it out of the box. That’s how the crowd did it back in the day when Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys played. That’s how the crowd does it today, when Alvin Crow is on the bandstand, stroking his fiddle. “We have cold beer, good whisky and good-lookin’ girls to dance with,” Broken Spoke owner James M. White says. “What more do you need?”

OK, OK, maybe pure country isn’t your thing. You need a little rock to temper the drawl. The convergence of the two is how Threadgill’s made its bones. Back in the ’70s, it was called the Armadillo World Headquarters. The cosmic-cowboy craze was in full effect. One weekend Willie Nelson might be playing, on another weekend The Clash, and on another Sun Ra.

Inside, on the walls of the renovated haunt, providing visuals for the diners, are vintage psychedelic concert posters. Outside is a performance space less ambitious in the scope of musicians it purveys than the Armadillo, but still a mainstay for eccentric acts like countrified hippies, the Gourds. Enjoy the fire pit, room for folding chairs, and a bar with a line that’s long but fast. Because in the morning, you’ll be back to atone for your sins at the Sunday gospel brunch.

Another important amalgamation of cultures occurred at Antone’s. The blues club was a unifier for blacks and whites in the ’70s and ’80s. Owner Clifford Antone ran the place like a playground for his heroes, blues assassins Muddy Waters, B.B. King and John Lee Hooker. But Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Los Lonely Boys have also dropped buckets of sweat there. “Clifford opened a club in downtown Austin at a time when downtowns were dying all over the country,” sister and current proprietor Susan Antone says. “The uniqueness of what became a first-class blues club led in many ways to so many other clubs opening there.”

The club has since relocated and is in a high-traffic area of downtown. And while the blues is only a fraction of what’s played today, you can still routinely catch 97-year-old boogie-woogie piano player, Pinetop Perkins, pouring out his heart. Of course, there are alternatives to the raucous side of Austin’s live music scene. The Long Center for the Performing Arts, located on the banks of Lady Bird Lake, hosts programming for that special night out, like when you want to put on cashmere and plunk down 100 bucks to see Leonard Cohen or Tuvan throat singers or the Austin Symphony Orchestra. But included in that hefty admission is a view of the cityscape that is downright hallucinatory.

By now it’s the witching hour. There’s no other place to be than Red River, the street that runs like a wayward son north of 6th Street. At the end is Mohawk, where rock bands on the cusp of the mainstream get loaded on cigarettes before commencing their post-midnight set behind a pair of Ray-Ban® sunglasses. This is where you can say you saw the next Pitchfork “it” band first. Because once that band amasses a following, it will graduate down the street to Austin’s definitive rock arena, Stubb’s. Some people go there for the barbecue, fashioned after the namesake, a Lubbock-born cotton-picker and Korean War vet named Christopher B. Stubblefield. Some people go there for the hotshot touring bands on the outside stage. Most people go there for both.

Say you just got your Tiguan and you’d rather marvel at it in your garage. There’s always Austin City LimitsSM, the live-music TV show after which the festival took its name. You know, the show that comes on PBS® late at night, with the lit-up backdrop of Austin.

It’s filmed in a studio on the University of Texas campus. You have to know someone to get tickets, or you line up well in advance of a taping and hope there are extras. With this risk comes reward, though. Music from the best of the best, both local and national. “After 35 years, we’re the longest-running music show on American television, so we’re probably on our third generation of artists and viewers,” executive producer Terry Lickona says.

Soon Austin City Limits will move into a studio in the new W Hotel, smack dab in downtown. But that’s how it goes in Austin. Things are always changing, sounds are always going in and out of style, musicians get big and move on as new ones arrive in town. Who knows, maybe in a couple years 6th Street will really be alive with the sound of live music.

Shanghai Volkswagen, a joint venture between the German automaker and China’s SAIC Motor, launched the Tiguan last Friday as Volkswagen’s first Chinese-made sport-utility vehicle (SUV), Shanghai Daily reported.

The Tiguan, equipped with either a 1.8-liter or 2.0-liter TSI engine, will be available in seven variants. Shanghai VW said about 40,000 orders have been received since pre-sales began in February. Its prices may range from 190,000 yuan ($27,000) to 300,000 yuan.

Changes between the China-built Tiguan and the versions sold in Europe and North America are minor: They amount to a new grille and a mildly reworked front bumper. The Tiguan will continue to be imported, but special models only. The imported 2.0TSI currently sells for 340,000 yuan.
With this SUV model, Volkswagen AG is planning to position itself in China’s fast-growing SUV market, which is now dominated by Japanese models such as Honda’s CR-V and Toyota’s Rav4 locally produced by their Chinese ventures.

Sales of SUVs jumped 47% to 658,800 units in China last year, outpacing the sales increase in other segments of the auto market. In the first two months of this year, SUV sales surged 170%.

The new Tiguan Track & Avenue rides on standard 19-inch ‘Savannah’ alloy wheels, and it offers a price advantage of over 2,000 Euros when all of its elegant and stylish features are considered. Two special exterior colours are being offered on this very expressive off-roader: ‘Oryx White Pearl Effect’ and ‘Island Grey Pearl Effect’. The package also includes a 25 degree off-road front end, modest wheel flares and a silver-coloured diffuser.

The first-class equipment continues in the interior. The new Tiguan Track & Avenue has exclusive leather upholstery – ‘Heavy Waxy’ in Amaranth – whose softness and durability make it one of the highest grade leathers. In addition, there are sport seats, an RCD 510 radio with Dynaudio sound system, ‘Climatronic’ climate control and a leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel with coloured seams. The package is rounded out with front fog lights and Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic curve lighting.

The Tiguan Track & Avenue can be ordered in four engine-transmission combinations, all of them with a 6-speed gearbox. For example, the 2.0 TSI engine (147 kW / 200 PS) may be combined with a manual or automatic transmission. Two diesel engines with 2.0 l displacement complete the programme: the 103 kW / 140 PS engine paired with an automatic and the more powerful variant with a manual gearbox and 125 kW / 170 PS. Prices for the new Tiguan Track & Avenue begin at 38,225 Euros for the 2.0 l TSI with manual gearbox.

Four 2010 Volkswagen models – the brand-leading Jetta sedan, the all-new Golf four-door, the stylish Passat sedan, and the nimble Tiguan – have each received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK award for 2010: The highest rating possible from the non-profit research organization. The annual award recognizes those vehicles that perform best in protecting passengers in the Institute’s front, side, and rear crash test evaluations, and the newly required roof-strength test evaluations. The Institute only tests vehicles with electronic stability control (branded Electronic Stabilization Program® / ESP® on Volkswagen vehicles), and head protection airbags.
 
‘TOP SAFETY PICKS are the vehicles on the top rung for safety,’ said IIHS president, Adrian Lund. ‘These Volkswagen models are in an elite group that afford the best protection in the most common kinds of crashes, and have electronic stability control to keep drivers out of many crashes altogether.’

Composed of more than 40 different features, the Prevent and Preserve Safety System helps keep drivers and passengers safe during normal driving conditions, and reduces the severity and consequences of a possible crash. The Jetta, Golf, Passat, and Tiguan also come standard with an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), ESP, up to eight airbags (depending on model), and more.

Car maker is testing everyday practicality of the energy of hydrogen

The Volkswagen Group supports the initiative of Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) with six fuel cell vehicles, the latest generation. From the end of October, two Volkswagen Tiguan HyMotion, two Caddy Maxi HyMotion and two Audi Q5 HFC under real conditions in Berlin’s city traffic will be tested. The aim is to demonstrate the suitability of hydrogen as a fuel in vehicles and to gain valuable insights into the evolution of this technology.

Prof. Juergen Leohold, head of research at Volkswagen: “The fuel cell is an important component of the fuel and powertrain strategy, Volkswagen. We are pleased to put our fuel cell vehicles available to the CEP project. The first Volkswagen models with a sufficiently durable and affordable fuel-cell drive could there be, in our view, at 2020th parallel, but also the development of a complete hydrogen infrastructure. ”

The Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) is an international association of companies BMW, Berlin Transportation Company (BVG), DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GM / Opel, Hydro AG, Linde and Shell Hydrogen, StatoillHydro, TOTAL, Vattenfall Europe and Volkswagen AG. The aim of a three-phased project is the technological development of the energy source of hydrogen for transport. The second phase, lasting until the end of 2010 provides a technical update of the vehicles and the infrastructure and testing the technology before under everyday conditions. In the third phase by the end of 2016, the market in preparation for the hydrogen technologies for the transport sector at the center. The CEP program is part of the National Innovation Program Hydrogen and fuel cells instead of technology (NIP).

The Tiguan is not only one of the most popular, but also one of the safest vehicles in its segment: once more the high level of competence at Volkswagen in the field of safety has been confirmed by top results in three independent crash test procedures.

The incredible effectiveness of the passive safety systems in the Tiguan was confirmed by independent testers in the USA and in Europe: the Tiguan was awarded the top value of five stars in July by the American NCAP (New Car Assessment Program). Three areas of safety were assessed by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration): the front crash, the side crash and rollover stability. In the front and side crash, the Tiguan, Europe’s most popular SUV, was awarded five stars each for the categories occupant protection for the driver and front passenger, and four stars for rollover safety. The risk of injury was assessed as being very low in all cases.

The first-class performance of the Tiguan is based on a comprehensive safety concept which includes the stable passenger safety cell and the energy-absorbing deformation zones around the vehicle. The IIHS (Insurance Institute of Highway Safety), which was founded by insurance companies in the USA and has been carrying out crash test programmes regularly since 1995, stated that the compact SUV’s crash response was excellent and awarded the vehicle the ‘Top Safety Pick’. Furthermore, the popular off-road vehicle achieved the best ever value in the compact SUV segment, four stars, for the roof stability test in which it was laden down with four times its own weight.

The Tiguan received the highest possible award of five stars in 2009 from the more stringent EuroNCAP Test, in which the vehicle is tested in four categories (protection for adult passengers, child protection, pedestrian protection, safety assist systems).

The reason for the high level of safety potential in the Tiguan can be found in the high stability of the body structure and the corresponding protection systems. A design with light-weight, profile-intensive construction using form-hardened, highest-strength sheet steel was chosen for the Tiguan. The shell construction of the steel body also offers the occupants optimal protection under crash conditions. But the numerous driver assist systems including ABS, ESP with brake assist, TCS, EDL with trailer stabilisation and EBC also contribute to the outstanding safety.

Inside, the carefully matched interplay of body and restraint systems ensure that passenger impact is kept to a minimum in the event of an accident. Three-point retractable seat belts are standard for all seats. Belt force limiters to reduce impact to the chest are integrated into both front seats and the two outer rear seats. Furthermore, electronically activated belt tensioners in front insure the optimal exploitation of the available safety zone. The front airbags in combination with the belt restraint system provide optimal protection for the driver and front passenger during a frontal collision. The completely newly developed front seats and head restraints are designed especially to provide extensive protection from cervical spine injuries during a rear collision. Child safety is rounded out by standard Isofix anchorage for the rear seats. Standard curtain airbags and side airbags integrated in the seat backrests add to the all-round safety of the Tiguan.

In addition to triggering the protective restraint systems, the belt tensioners and the airbags, the Tiguan’s airbag trigger system communicates with other control units: in the event of an accident, the hazard warning lights are activated, locked doors are unlocked, the interior lights are switched on and the fuel pump is switched off.

But pedestrian protection played a major role in the development of the Tiguan from the very beginning. All the relevant parts of the vehicle’s front were designed with the pedestrian in mind, and the inner sheet metal structure of the bonnet in particular was optimised for pedestrian protection. For example, there is a specially-designed soft foam body underneath the bumper cover which is designed to reduce the severity of leg injuries primarily.
