Third year in a row for Volkswagen Rabbit

Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced that the Rabbit has once again been named one of the ‘Top 10 Coolest Cars Under $18,000′ by Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.com), a top rated consumer web-site that provides vehicle pricing and information. The annual accolade acknowledges automakers for producing vehicles that emphasize performance, safety, fuel economy, interior size, and comfort. This year the editors also selected vehicles with a growing emphasis on personality, versatility, and technology.

“Volkswagen of America is thrilled that our Rabbit has once again been recognized by Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com as one of the Coolest New Cars Under $18,000,’ said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America. ‘The Rabbit truly embodies the Volkswagen Brand–affordable German engineering in a stylish and fun-to-drive package,” added Barnes.

Since 2003, Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com has announced the ‘Top 10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000′ to provide consumers a list of affordable and stylish vehicles. The editors at kbb.com compiled the list of qualifying vehicles using Kelley Blue Book’s New Car Blue Book Values, which reflect real-world transaction prices and provides a useful comparison point as compared to the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).

“The fun, refined and versatile Volkswagen Rabbit has found its way onto our Coolest Cars list yet again. This will be the last year, though, as a new, sixth-generation version of Volkswagen’s venerable hatchback is set to show up for the 2010 model year and will again sport a ‘Golf’ nametag,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com.

The 2009 Rabbit comes standard with a fun-to-drive 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine that delivers 170 horsepower and 177 lbs.-ft. of torque. The engine can be mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic®. Adding to the Rabbits fun-to-drive DNA is a multi-link rear suspension and an electro-mechanical power-assisted steering system that contribute to the vehicles agility and nimbleness. Regardless of which transmission is selected, the Rabbit’s performance and fuel economy numbers add up to guilt-free fun. With the manual the Rabbit gets 29 miles per gallon (MPG) on the highway, and the automatic gets 30 mpg on the highway.

The Rabbit, like all 2009 model year Volkswagen’s, is included in the no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. Under this program all of the Rabbit’s scheduled maintenance, as described in its maintenance booklet, is covered for the length of the new vehicle warranty–three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Gays and lesbians continue to do their homework when it comes to buying cars and the Volkswagen Rabbit and Eos remain at the top of their list when searching on Gaywheels.com, the sole source of information specifically targeted to and about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) car-shoppers. Today, Gaywheels.com announced its list of the Top 10 Most-Researched Vehicles during the first quarter of 2009.

‘The latest Top 10 Most Researched list supports the results of our recent LGBT Auto Owner’s survey,’ said Gaywheels.com founder Joe LaMuraglia. ‘Volkswagen and Audi are two brands that are over-represented by Gay Men in the study and those brands represent 40% of the Top 10 list.’

Other brand positions further supported the recent survey results; the Saab 9-3 has consistently been on the most-researched list and that brand is the most over-indexed for both Gay Men and Lesbians.

‘All the vehicles on the most-researched list are expressive, stylish vehicles and with the sole exception of the Maserati GranTurismo, all are fuel efficient and come from gay-friendly manufacturers,’ added LaMuraglia. ‘This is also in line with the purchase reasons from the study. The top purchase reason for Gay Men is styling and for Lesbians is fuel economy.’

The Top 10 Most Researched list is based on website statistics gathered from January 1, 2009 – March 31, 2009 from Gaywheels.com’s New Car section. Gaywheels.com publishes its Most-Researched list quarterly.

The Volkswagen Rabbit took over the top spot from the Toyota Yaris after a 12-month run. The Volvo C30 and the Mazda Mazda3 made their debut in the 9th and 10th spot respectively.

‘It seems price and fuel economy concerns are important the Gaywheels.com consumer,’ said Gaywheels.com founder Joe LaMuraglia. ‘60% of the vehicles on the most-researched list are hatchbacks and four of those six have a MSRP starting at under $16K.’

The Volkswagen Rabbit (available to subscribers) tops this month’s group of small, affordable four-door hatchbacks and is now our highest-rated car in small hatchback category, surpassing the Mazda3.

The car is the successor to the Golf, and Volkswagen has resurrected the American name used for the first-generation hatchback in the 1970s.

With agile handling and a versatile, well-finished interior, the Rabbit feels solid and is a pleasant car to drive. It is also competitively priced and well equipped. Power has increased by 20 horsepower since our last test of its sibling, the Jetta sedan, in February 2006.

Promotes advances, benefits of Clean Diesel Technology

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Volkswagen of America, Inc. is launching the Dieselution Tour, a mobile marketing exhibit, to educate the media and the public on advances in clean diesel technology and alternative fuels.

Using interactive displays and exhibits, the Dieselution Tour will highlight current environmental issues and showcase advances in diesel engine technology, design and performance. Starting today, the exhibit embarks on a four-month tour, making stops at events and locations around the United States, including environmental and alternative fuel festivals, auto shows and the 2008 Super Bowl.

“Volkswagen of America considers the Dieselution Tour an important informational resource for everyone concerned about the environment and improved fuel economy standards,” said Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volkswagen of America, Inc. “We want to show Americans that today’s clean diesel technology is a quantum leap from the powerplants introduced nearly 30 years ago. This tour aims to change any outdated perception about diesel technology.”

“As the diesel car sales leader in the United States, we have worked hard to make our diesels cleaner, quieter and more fuel efficient,” Jacoby added. “Once consumers realize that a clean diesel alternative can improve their fuel economy by nearly 35 percent over comparable gasoline engines, we’re confident that many drivers will visit their local Volkswagen dealerships.”

The Dieselution Tour is centered around a 53-foot-long, double-expandable semi-trailer with exhibits and interactive displays. Elements include an “Alt Fuel/ Alt Film video area; a Dieselab with a series of interactive and video displays; a Diesel Heritage section, illustrating Volkswagen’s diesel history and leadership; a Sustainability Station, involving an interactive quiz and a Carbon Footprint Calculator; a Beyond Diesel perspective featuring SunFuel; and a Motorsports display, outlining Volkswagen’s recent history and international success in racing diesel vehicles in events like the Baja 500, Pikes Peak, and the Dakar rally.

The Dieselution Tour will also feature the 2009 Jetta TDI, Volkswagen’s new, 50-state clean diesel offering. The vehicle is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. in spring of 2008. Also on display, a 3.0-liter V6 TDI Touareg, the Polo Blue Motion and the oldest Volkswagen diesel in America, a 1977 Rabbit.

Partner/sponsor companies involved in this landmark exhibit are International Truck and Engine Company and CarbonFund.org. a non-profit carbon offset provider.

Signifying Volkswagen’s environmental concern, the Dieselution Tour will be certified as CarbonFree by Carbonfund.org. Volkswagen and Carbonfund.org recently announced a partnership to offset one year of carbon emission from each new Volkswagen sold in the U.S. from September, 2007 through January 2, 2008. In return, Volkswagen is working with Carbonfund.org to reforest land in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV) in northern Louisiana, a wetland ecosystem that had been largely converted to farmland.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today that they have been named the best-full line manufacturer by Strategic Vision for the second consecutive year and the Rabbit was rated the top vehicle in its class in the annual Strategic Vision Total Quality Index™ (TQI), which measures new vehicle owner satisfaction. “On top of strong quality, the Volkswagen Rabbit hits a strong emotional chord with its buyers,” said Alexander Edwards, president, Strategic Vision. “Overall, Volkswagen vehicles have proven to be of high-quality and owners are passionate about the brand and their vehicles.”
