Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced the debut of the new 2012 Jetta GLI, which combines the comfort and sophistication of a Jetta with aggressive performance and handling in a sporty yet sleek package. The all-new Jetta GLI is the most differentiated Jetta GLI model ever made by Volkswagen. With a rich heritage that dates back to 1984, the new Jetta GLI is sure to appeal to both automotive enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike.

The Jetta GLI offers exceptional features and options, for equally impressive pricing. Available in three trim levels, the Jetta GLI has a starting MSRP of $23,495. The GLI Autobahn, with an MSRP of $25,545, adds 18” alloy wheels, sunroof, dual zone climate control, heated V-Tex Leatherette seats and the Fender® Premium Audio System. The top of the line Jetta GLI Autobahn with Navigation adds the RNS-315 navigation system and keyless access with push-button start technology for an MSRP of $26,445.

Engine and Transmission

The sporty Jetta GLI boasts the award winning 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, generating 200 horsepower and a full 207 lb.-ft. of torque at just 1,700 rpm, contributing to drivability and response of the vehicle in both everyday and performance situations. The Jetta GLI is offered with a six speed manual transmission as standard equipment. This new model is significantly lighter than the previous Jetta GLI and it offers power and performance coupled with German sensibilities. While EPA figures are not yet available, the Jetta GLI is expected to deliver 31 mpg highway with the manual and 32 mpg highway with the DSG® automatic.

Additional performance features for the Jetta GLI include:

Premium Features

To make life on the road a little easier, the Jetta GLI offers sophisticated, German engineered premium appointments. Features include standard 6.5” touch screen premium VIII radio with Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, standard one-touch up/down power on all four windows, standard multifunction display (for vehicle status, trip, radio and navigation information when equipped), available dual zone climate control, available RNS-315 navigation system and available keyless entry with pushbutton start.

The 2012 Jetta GLI Autobahn and Autobahn with navigation models come standard with a Fender® Premium Audio System, bringing the concert stage to the vehicle for the ultimate music experience. Designed exclusively for Volkswagen, the Fender® Premium Audio System is embedded in the vehicle design and features proprietary Panasonic® speaker technology. The system covers the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers that generate imaging beyond the capabilities of traditional speaker designs. It cuts through the noise and other distractions with front dual voice coil speakers, with extended range for all musical genres.

The sound system features lower inter-modulation distortion and smooth mid-range response to eliminate harshness. It is harmonically complex, with extended range tweeters and properly voiced 16cm speakers revealing original instrumentation timbre and harmonic richness, bringing the raw emotion of live music to the driving experience.

Exterior

The Jetta GLI combines performance, space and comfort in one sleek package. At 182.2 inches long, 57.2 inches tall and 70 inches wide, it is more than 2.9 inches longer than previous Jetta models.

The front end of the car is defined by prominent horizontal lines. The Jetta GLI grille and the car’s trapezoidal headlights help create a distinct look. Below the bumper is a cooling air intake and tray-shaped front spoiler that completes the masculine look of the car. The upper front end section shows a powerful transition from the v-shaped engine hood to the fenders on the sides while the shoulder section provides dynamic and muscular styling.

The aggressive styling of the Jetta GLI is powerfully emphasized by the arches of the wheel wells available with 17” or 18” alloys. Sleek lines and sporty shoulders dominate the rear section. The smoked taillights stand out with two distinct sections extending on either side from the fender into the tailgate above the dual exhaust tips.

Interior

Like the exterior, the interior of the Jetta GLI stays true to its sport and performance roots. Featuring sport bucket seats with red stitching and a sport flat-bottom steering wheel with red stitching, the GLI logo and aluminum accents, the interior styling consistently follows the clean, sporty lines of the car. The Jetta GLI is available in cloth or V-Tex Leatherette and also features sleek alloy pedals, shifter, dash and door trim.
Intuitive controls and well-arranged instruments allow drivers to enjoy a comfortable and ergonomically designed gear shift grip. Further up on the center console are the newly designed and intuitive controls for climate and radio. The console is also slightly inclined toward the driver to heighten comfort behind the wheel.

To increase versatility, the rear bench seatback is split 60/40 and folds. The trunk can also be opened from inside the car by a remote unlock switch.

Safety

The Jetta GLI includes several features designed to enhance driver and passenger safety including electronic stability control, tire pressure monitoring and Volkswagen’s advanced Intelligent Crash Response System, which initiates automatic safety protection in some types of collisions — the electrical supply to the fuel pump is shut off, the doors unlock and the hazard lights switch on.

As part of the equipment package, the Jetta GLI also features driver and front passenger airbags, side airbags in front and Side Curtain Protection® airbags in front and rear

It will featuring the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, generating 200 horsepower and a full 207 lb.-ft. of torque at just 1,700 rpm. In the USA it is the most successful car of any European producer: the Jetta. Between the East and West coasts of America, up to 110,000 vehicles of this model series are sold annually. Americans value the Jetta as a highly safe and sporty saloon with “German Engineering.” In June, Volkswagen unveiled – in an event receiving international attention with stars like Katy Perry at the centre of New York’s Times Square – a completely new generation of the world bestseller with over 9.6 million units built so far. Now, the most impressive Jetta ever is also launching in Europe. This heralds a new era for this model series between Helsinki and Rome, Istanbul and Lisbon. The latest version of “the” saloon of the compact class is expected to carry over its US success to Europe.

This Volkswagen has the potential to do just that. Never before has a Jetta had this much sports appeal, this much fuel efficiency or this large a size. The times when the saloon was simply derived from the Golf are a thing of the past. From now on, these two successful models will go their own ways. The new Jetta, now significantly longer (4.64 metres long instead of the previous 4.55 metres), is very appealing as a high-end, spacious and sporty saloon with maximum active driving performance.

And in fact, this Volkswagen – available in Trendline, Comfortline and Highline equipment versions – takes an enormous leap forward in concept and styling. As mentioned, the saloon’s design is no longer derived from the Golf; instead, it follows its own line of styling. This makes the Jetta a strong and independent model series just like the Eos and the Tiguan. Designers and engineers also came up with an entirely new interior. The five-seat saloon’s rear seating layout is significantly more spacious (6.7 cm gain in legroom) thanks to the car’s longer wheelbase – a result of the increased vehicle length. With these dimensions, the Jetta ideally fills the gap between the compact Golf (4.20 metres long) and the new large Passat (4.77 metres long).

Uncompromising efficiency

Even its smallest engines are truly great successes. Take the example of the 1.6 TDI with 77 kW / 105 PS: In the BlueMotion Technology version, this common rail turbodiesel only consumes 4.2 l/100 km (equivalent to 109 g/km CO2). Consider the 1.2 TSI that also outputs 77 kW / 105 PS and has BlueMotion Technology: This direct-injection turbo petrol engine only requires 5.3 l/100 km (equivalent to 123 g/km CO2), which is exceptional considering that this is a saloon with petrol engine that can move at 190 km/h. As already noted, the Jetta 1.2 TSI costs €20,900 in the Trendline version. The base price of the Jetta 1.6 TDI Trendline with BlueMotion Technology: €23,475. Additional power levels: a TDI with 103 kW / 140 PS and three TSIs with 90 kW / 122 PS, 118 kW / 160 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS. So, the Jetta is being driven exclusively by charged, high-tech, direct-injection engines. All engines except the 105 PS TSI may be combined with a dual-clutch transmission (DSG).

Three equipment lines

Trendline: The Trendline equipment line is still the entry-level model to the world of the Jetta. When it comes to safety, standard equipment includes six airbags (with an optional eight), five crash-optimized head restraints (on front seats with anti-whiplash design), daytime running lights, belt fastening detection, automatic hazard flasher lights that activate with hard braking, Hill Climb Assist and ABS with braking assistant and ESP with trailer stabilisation.

Exterior features of the Jetta Trendline include details such as 205 tyres on 16-inch steel wheels, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors with integrated turn signals and green tinted heat-insulating glass. Inside, comfort and convenience are upgraded with details such as climate control (Climatic), dust and pollen filter, radio remote control of central locking, outside temperature indicator with road icing warning, chrome bezels for the air vents, multifunctional display (MFA) and a height-adjustable driver’s seat (with fabric seat covers in “Cardeol” design).

Comfortline: The medium equipment version, the Comfortline, is offered at prices from €22,600 (Jetta 1.2 TSI with 77 kW / 105 PS). This model’s exterior is distinguished by chrome accents in the radiator grille and 16-inch, five-spoke “Mambo” alloy wheels.

Inside, the Jetta Comfortline is upgraded with details such as storage pockets on the backrests of the front seats, centre armrests (with storage compartment in front), 8-way adjustment of driver and front passenger seats, comfort seats with elegant fabric upholstery in “Sienna” design, woven floor mats, the RCD 210 radio-CD system, a Chrome Pack (including rotary light switch and control dial for climate control) and what is known as the Small Leather Pack (leather-trimmed steering wheel, gearshift grip and parking brake grip) as well as black accents (“Black Pyramid”). Also standard: the Park Pilot (front and rear), lowering of the passenger side door mirror when reversing and four reading lamps (2 in front, 2 in rear).

Highline: The most exclusive Jetta version is the Highline equipment line. It may be ordered in combination with TSI engines from 90 kW / 122 PS (base price: €24,575) as well as all TDI power levels (base price of 77 kW / 105 PS: €25,875). Exterior features beyond those of the Trendline and Comfortline: 17-inch alloy wheels (ten-spoke “Porto” type), chrome frame around lower air intake screen, chrome trim under the side windows, headlight cleaning system and front fog lights with cornering lights.

A Winter Pack (including heated front seats and heated windscreen washer nozzles) helps to get through the coldest season of the year. Inside, features that refine the top model include sport seats with fabric covers (“Gloss”) and artificial leather, particularly elegant accents (“Iridium Printed” pattern) and an automatic climate control (Climatronic).

There will be two Volkswagen Style Express locations set up and ready to take you uptown or downtown. Of all the European brand saloons in America, the Jetta is the most successful. What’s more: with 9.6 million units sold, it is a world bestseller. Now, there is a new generation Jetta. Larger and more comfortable, sustainable and dynamic – with entirely new styling. As a tribute to the US market, in June Volkswagen introduced the new model in a world premiere at New York’s Times Square. Volkswagen is also showing its loyalty to America in its choice of location for the successful model’s international driving presentation – it is being held on the West Coast in San Francisco. The sixth generation Jetta will begin its market introduction phase in the heart of California.

The saloon – developed in Germany and built in Mexico – makes great strides forward in both concept and styling. Never before was a Jetta this large. The new model is 182.7 inches long in the US version and 4.64 metres long in the European version, 57.1 inches (1.45 metres) tall and 70.1 inches (1.78 metres) wide. This makes the Volkswagen 3.54 inches (9 centimetres) longer than the previous model. The interplay of its exterior dimensions generates a powerful ratio of proportions. In parallel, the new Volkswagen “design DNA” sharpens its style. This has resulted in clear precise lines and athletically muscular surfaces, which give the saloon an image of timeless elegance and dynamic styling.

Designers and engineers have also crafted the interior right down to the last detail; now, the five-seater’s quality and perfection in details clearly go beyond class boundaries. The extended wheelbase of the five-seat Jetta has enabled a rear seating layout that is significantly more comfortable. Compared to the previous model, legroom has now increased by 2.6 inches (6.7 cm) to 38.1 inches (96.7 cm).

German engineering is the key word that captures the attention of many customers in the USA. German engineering and craftsmanship reflect the highest level of quality and efficient technology. The new Jetta is a prime example; a look at its range of engines (77 kW / 105 PS to 147 kW / 200 PS) makes this abundantly clear: As a turbodiesel with the latest common rail direct injection, it sets standards in fuel economy. The US version with a 103 kW / 140 PS TDI Clean Diesel (conforming to the BIN 5 emissions standard) attains a top fuel economy of 42 mpg Highway (combined cycle: 34 mpg); this makes the Jetta one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market. In Europe, Volkswagen will be introducing a 77 kW / 105 PS engine as its smallest TDI in 2011. Its fuel economy in the BlueMotion Technology version: a sensational 4.2 l/100 km – a best value for a saloon in the 4.6 metre class.

Volkswagen has systematically tailored its US equipment versions (S, SE, SEL, TDI and GLI) to the wishes of American car drivers, and has developed one of the most attractive saloons in its class. The already well-equipped base version will launch at prices starting at 15,995 US dollars (European prices will be announced for the Jetta Trendline, Comfortline and Highline when ordering begins in individual countries). In parallel, Volkswagen has designed a second version of the safety chassis specifically for America.

By 2018, Volkswagen of America aims to triple its annual sales volume to about 800,000 vehicles between the East and West coasts. The new Jetta will play a key role here. Today, Jettas are already being sold in the USA at a rate of up to 110,000 units annually, and Volkswagen intends to grow this figure. One of its recipes for success: a clear focus on the customer and not just on the competition. That is what has made Volkswagen unique among high-volume carmakers, ever since the days when Ferdinand Porsche built the Beetle.

The Jetta takes this philosophy into the future with its excellent fuel economy and a comprehensive safety concept. ESP and a tyre pressure monitoring system are standard features in this car, and the previous model was already named “Top Safety Pick” in crash testing by the US organisation IIHS. Along with its optimal occupant crash safety, the car has further advanced pedestrian safety features as well. The workmanship quality is pioneering. The new Jetta addresses the automotive challenges of our time better than the vast majority of the competition – with a remarkably comfortable interior, a stylish and powerful design and maximum efficiency.

Yesterday, Volkswagen presented at Times Square in New York – an entirely new Jetta design. The model series has a global presence with 9.6 million units sold, and it has been a bestseller especially in the USA. The follow-up model to the most successful German brand sedan in America takes a gigantic leap forward – conceptually and especially in its styling. The design projects a more dynamic image than ever before. Offering a preview of the new Jetta’s styling was the NCC coupe concept car shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Designers of the new Jetta sedan drew their inspiration from the coupe, and this bodes well for the potential sports appeal of the new Jetta. Designers and engineers also re-designed the interior down to the finest details; the quality and detailed perfection inside the five-seater now truly exceed traditional class boundaries. The already well-equipped base version will launch at prices starting at 15,995 US dollars (European prices for the Jetta Trendline, Comfortline and Highline to be announced for specific countries as pre-ordering begins). In parallel, Volkswagen has developed a second version of the safety chassis designed especially for America.

Volkswagen of America – 800,000 cars per year by 2018

By 2018, Volkswagen of America wants to triple its annual sales volume to about 800,000 vehicles from the East Coast to the West. The new Jetta plays a key role here. Today, the Jetta sells at a rate of 110,000 units per year in the USA. We want to increase this figure. One of our recipes for success: a clear focus on customers and not just on the competition. Since the days of the Beetle built by Ferdinand Porsche, this has made Volkswagen unique among high-volume car makers. The Jetta is guiding this philosophy into the future – with its low fuel consumption, excellent vehicle dynamics and a comprehensive safety concept. ESP and tire pressure monitoring are standard systems aboard; based on results of independent crash testing by the US organization IIHS, the previous model was already named “Top Safety Pick”. The car’s top crash safety has now been further enhanced by further perfected pedestrian protection. The quality of workmanship is pioneering. With a decidedly comfortable interior and a design that is as stylish as it is powerful, the new Jetta is taking on the automotive challenges of our times better than the vast majority of its competitors.

Exterior styling and dimensions

Never before has a Jetta been so large. The new model is 182.7 inches (4.64 meters) long, 57.1 inches (1.45 meters) tall and 70.1 inches (1.78 meters) wide. As noted, this makes the Volkswagen now being presented in New York 3.54 inches (9 cm) longer than the previous model. The interplay of exterior dimensions leads to a powerful balance of proportions. In parallel, the new Volkswagen ‘design DNA’ sharpens the car’s styling. This has resulted in clear, precise lines and athletically muscular surfaces, which lend a timeless elegance and dynamic styling to the sedan.

Front end: Here, the prominence of horizontal lines defines the design. The high-gloss black radiator grille combines with the car’s trapezoidal headlights to form a styling unit. Under the unit formed by the grille and headlights there is the fully painted bumper, which is designed as a cleanly sculpted surface. One section lower, another cooling air intake and the tray-shaped front spoiler (in the style of ‘splitters’ used in car racing) gives the car a sporty finish. The upper front end section shows a powerful transition from the v-shaped engine hood to the fenders on the sides; the shoulder section realized here was derived 1:1 from the NCC concept car, and it produces dynamic and muscular styling.

Side profile: In the side profile of this sedan, styling characteristics that mark all new Volkswagens launched during the past year meld into yet another interpretation of the ‘design DNA’ conceptualized by the Italian Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group (Walter de Silva) and the German Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand (Klaus Bischoff). The best example of this: the characteristic shoulder or ‘tornado’ line and the powerfully emphasized arches of the wheel wells. Formally, they intersect the main volumes of the large homogeneous surfaces, conveying a strong dynamic image. Thanks to wide track dimensions, the wheel arches also form a precise transition – as though cut with a knife – to accommodate up to an 18 inch wheel. Meanwhile, the styling of the outside mirrors with their integrated turn signal indicators emulate the larger CC. Compared to the previous model, the new Jetta has also grown in clarity and pre-eminence in its side profile.

Rear section: Harmonized surfaces and sporty shoulders also dominate the look in back of the new Volkswagen Jetta. Powerful in illumination and visually distinctive: the taillights. They are split into two sections, and on each side they extend from the fender into the tailgate.

Interior and dimensions

The interior with its high-end image definitely pushes the boundaries of the vehicle class above. The Jetta is significantly increasing its lead over the competition here. One key benefit of the car’s extended wheelbase is that it enabled a layout of the rear seating area of the five-seat Jetta that is substantially more comfortable. Compared to the previous model, legroom is now a long 38.1 inches (96.7 cm) – a gain of 2.6 inches (6.7 cm).

Inside, the new Jetta also offers unparalleled perfection in details, and – as a common conceptual thread throughout the car – intuitive controls. The instruments are ideally arranged. The new steering wheel designs (optionally with multifunction keys) impress both visually and to the touch. The right hand rests ergonomically on the gear shift grip; further up on the center console are the newly designed and intuitive controls for the climate control and radio and radio-navigation systems; this console section is slightly inclined toward the driver for an ideal alignment of the cockpit that focuses on the driver’s needs. Also in optimal view are the round instruments; the multifunction display (trip computer) is located between them. Even in the base version, the rear bench seatback is split 40/60 and folds, increasing the car’s versatility. The tailgate can also be opened from inside the car by a remote unlock switch. Up to six airbags (two front airbags, two side airbags in front, two window airbags / thorax airbags in the area of the front side windows) are also part of the equipment package.

Fuel-efficient engines

Four engines for America: In the USA and Canada, the new Jetta is offered with three petrol engines and one turbodiesel direct-injection engine (TDI Clean Diesel). Two of the four engines are new on board: the entry-level engine (85 kW / 115 PS) and the common rail TDI (103 kW / 140 PS). Technically perfected in the new model are the 125 kW / 170 PS 2.5-liter gasoline engine and the sporty top engine, the turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI with 147 kW / 200 PS, which will power the top model Jetta GLI in North America starting in 2011. The new 115 PS engine has a combined fuel economy of 28 mpg* (manual transmission); the version with automatic transmission attains a value of 26 mpg*. A technical highlight is the new 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel; thanks to conversion to the world’s leading direct injection diesel system – common rail injection – the turbocharged engine is as quiet as a gasoline engine and as powerful as a sports car engine (320 Newton-meters maximum torque). A particulate filter and a NOx storage catalytic converter ensure that this TDI meets emissions requirements in all states of the USA. A combined fuel economy of 34 mpg makes the new and very agile Jetta 2.0-liter TDI (0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds) one of the most fuel-efficient and lowest emitting vehicles on the North American continent.

All engines are offered with a manual transmission as standard equipment. Of course, an automatic transmission is also available with each engine version as an option. On the new 2.0-liter TDI and 2.0-liter TSI, Volkswagen is implementing the 6-speed DSG – one of the most advanced and efficient automatic transmission systems in the world.

Six engines for Europe: In Europe, the engine strategy will conform to prevailing market conditions. Smaller engine displacements and charging are key objectives here. This means somewhat less power in the base engines, significantly lower engine displacements, and all engines are charged. Four of the six engines are new to the Jetta program and will be added in 2011: The 1.2 TSI (77 kW / 105 PS), 1.4 TSI (118 kW / 160 PS) and two common rail turbodiesels 1.6 TDI (77 / kW 105 PS) and 2.0 TDI (103 kW / 140 PS). As usual, the 1.4 TSI (90 kW / 122 PS) and the 2.0 TSI (147 kW / 200 PS) offer high-tech in proven form. Except for the 1.2 TSI, all engines may be paired with a 6-speed DSG (77 kW TDI, 103 kW TDI, 147 kW TSI) or 7-speed DSG (90 kW TSI, 118 kW TSI).

Naturally, every Jetta engine offered in Europe fulfills requirements of the EU-5 emissions standard. The 1.2 TSI and 1.6 TDI are also equipped with the BlueMotion Technology package. This means that their technical features include a Start-Stop system and battery regeneration. The new Jetta 1.2 TSI BlueMotion Technology consumes just 5.3 l/100 km* (equivalent to 123 g/km* CO2) – an absolute top value for a gasoline-powered sedan with a top speed of 190 km/h. The Jetta with 1.6 TDI BlueMotion Technology attains a sensationally low combined fuel consumption of 4.1 l/100* km (109 g/km* CO2); with this engine, the Jetta is the most fuel-efficient 4.6-meter sedan in the world.
