A circle is completed

Volkswagen is continuing a great tradition with the Golf Cabriolet. On the past 3 models – produced between 1979 and 2002 – over 680,000 drivers chose the cabriolet version. For a time, it was the world’s most successful cabriolet. The new Golf Cabriolet has the potential to continue this history. All it lacks is one item: a roll bar. In 2011, this function of the roll bar is being performed by an extremely fast rollover protection system that deploys in fractions of a second. Front and side curtain head/thorax airbags, a knee airbag on the driver’s side and ESP are also always standard. After all, safety is a top priority.

All-rounder instead of diva

When the top is up, this Volkswagen is one of the quietest cars of its kind. In addition, the Golf Cabriolet offers one of the most spacious interiors in its class and – thanks to the soft top – unlimited use of the bootspace and its 250 liters of cargo capacity, even with the top down. This enables open-top cruising in the Golf Cabriolet with a full load of cargo in the boot. In addition, the folding rear bench seat is split, which significantly increases stowing capacity.

Maximum safety

The body of the Golf Cabriolet offers maximum all-round safety thanks to its extremely fast rollover protection system that deploys in milliseconds, a reinforced windscreen frame and numerous other structural modifications (underbody, side panels, sills, back panel, doors). These many reinforcements also give the 4.25 meter long, 1.78 meter wide and (top up) 1.42 meter tall Golf Cabriolet extreme torsional rigidity.

Exterior

Very clearly the Golf among cabriolets: In many respects, the styling of the Golf Cabriolet matches that of its hardtop, three-door counterpart, but its new rear section, lower roof line and more swept-back windscreen frame also give it a high degree of independence, as was true of previous versions of the bestselling cabriolet. When the soft top is down, the Golf Cabriolet has an elegant, extended appearance. With the top up, the compact and crisp styling lines around the ‘imaginary’ C-pillars and the boot unmistakably reflect the character of the previous model and transfer it to contemporary times – spanning over an entire decade.

Interior

High-end with cabrio feeling: The cabriolet version of the Golf follows the high styling and material quality standards of the classic hardtop Golf 1:1 in the interior. This results in a level of sophistication that is otherwise only offered in significantly more expensive cabriolets. Like the Eos before it, the Golf sets itself apart from many other convertibles in the compact class in one key interior attribute: the windscreen frame is refreshingly short, optimizing the cabrio feeling.

One cabriolet, one equipment line

The Golf Cabriolet – like the Eos, Passat CC, Touareg and Phaeton – is available in one equipment line, which can be customized by various option packs (e.g. “Performance,” “Design & Style,” “Comfort,” “Technology”), 9 exterior colors, 9 seat upholstery styles and colors as well as 50 individual options. The base vehicle already offers very extensive features. In the exterior area, standard features include smoked LED rear lights, 16-inch wheels with 205 tires and chrome trim on the radiator grille. Upgraded interior and functional features that are standard include a fully automatic soft top, air conditioning, Easy Entry function of the height-adjustable comfort seats in front, electric windows all around and interior accents in “Matt Chrome.”

Sustainable cruising

Any of the 6 turbo direct-injection engines that are offered are ideal for long and short trips throughout the 4 seasons. They span a power range from 77 kW / 105 PS to 155 kW / 210 PS. Also fun is the fast and fuel-efficient dual clutch transmission (DSG), which is available with 4 of the engines. Energy-saving BlueMotion Technologies (battery regeneration and Stop/Start systems) will be available on one of the petrol engines (TSI) and on both diesels (TDI). Illustrating just how efficiently the new Volkswagen utilizes its fuel is the Golf Cabriolet 1.6 TDI with 105 PS and BlueMotion Technology: it has a combined fuel consumption of just 4.4 l/100 km (equivalent to 117 g/km CO2). An overview of all engine versions debuting over the course of 2011:

• 1.2 TSI – 77 kW / 105 PS (6-speed)
• 1.4 TSI – 90 kW / 122 PS (6-speed / 7-speed DSG)
• 1.4 TSI – 118 kW / 160 PS (6-speed / 7-speed DSG)

Technology of the bestseller: All of the Golf Cabriolet’s engines power the front wheels. As a rule, the convertible Golf also utilizes the high-end powertrain and chassis systems of the hardtop version of the world bestseller. Therefore, the familiar MacPherson-type strut suspension with performance-optimized anti-roll bars is used in front. In the rear, the new Golf Cabriolet has an innovative multi-link rear suspension, which ensures that the ESP system very seldom needs to be activated.

The Golf 2.0L TDI clean diesel model offers 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway, as well as an 8.6 second sprint from zero to 60 mph. Available in both two-door and four-door models, the Golf TDI is marked by its fusion of German-tuned performance and impressive fuel economy – compliments of an advanced electronically-controlled turbocharger and the electronically-controlled direct injection fuel system.

The Golf Plus now also runs on LPG. Thanks to the use of this alternative fuel, a reduction of more than 10% in CO2 emissions and fuel savings of €6.10 per 100 kilometres* in LPG mode could also be achieved, due in part to the reduced German fuel tax in place until 2018. All in all, a solid argument.

With its bi-fuel drive system – which can run on petrol at the flick of a switch – the new Golf Plus lowers consumption and emissions: the 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine with 72 kW / 98 PS needs an average of 9.8 litres of LPG per 100 kilometres (159 g/km CO2). When burning petrol, the Golf Plus BiFuel is even more economical (7.5 litres of Super, 179 g/km CO2) over the same distance.

This gives the LPG-powered Golf Plus an environmental edge, namely CO2 emissions more than 10% lower than those of comparable petrol-engined vehicles. The 55-litre petrol tank and the LPG tank, which has a usable volume of 43 litres and is built into the spare wheel well to save space, provide an extended range of more than 1,100 kilometres. The LPG tank alone has a range of about 440 kilometres. LPG filling station coverage is comprehensive in Europe – in Germany alone there are more than 4,700 stations.

The factory-installed solution for the new Golf Plus BiFuel is considerably more advantageous than an LPG conversion: to name just a couple of benefits, the vehicle has been subjected to extensive endurance testing and undergone crash testing with the LPG tank, making it extremely safe. Customers receive a full warranty for the entire vehicle, LPG components included. The new Golf Plus BiFuel is now available for order in the Trendline and Comfortline versions at an entry-level price of €22,460.

Following the five stars given to the new Golf by Euro NCAP six weeks ago in the classic disciplines, the sixth generation of the bestseller has received further recognition. On this occasion, the independent testers at Euro NCAP have presented the whiplash-optimised head restraint system (WOKS) in the new Golf with an award.

Various different accident-related over-extensions of the neck are referred to as “whiplash syndrome” internationally. With WOKS, Volkswagen has succeeded in developing a seat belt system that considerably reduces the risk of injury in an accident: the defined rate of deceleration for the upper body and head achieves excellent levels of protection.

A decisive element can be seen in the special contours of the head restraint and seat backrest as well as the hardness of the foam used. Volkswagen has applied for a patent for the head restraint contour. The major advantage of this geometrically and dynamically-optimised system is that a level of potential protection has been achieved that was better in tests than the bio-mechanical results of many active systems. WOKS has been fitted as standard in the new Golf since October.

The new Golf was already graded with an excellent rating for safety at the end of October: it achieved 36 of 37 possible points and received five stars for occupant safety. It received four stars for child safety and three stars for pedestrian protection. Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Program) is an association of European transport ministries, automobile clubs and insurance agencies which has regularly carried out independent crash test programmes since 1997.

Clean with auto gas: Also debuting as a world premiere in Bologna is the Golf BiFuel that is factory-built for operation with auto gas. Its bivalent drive – a simple switchover and it can be powered by gasoline – reduces costs and emissions. When the Golf BiFuel is powered by LPG (liquified petroleum gas), the environmental impact compared to a gasoline driven car is: about 10 percent lower CO2 emissions.

Compared to aftermarket auto gas systems, the system now being presented in the Golf BiFuel offers significant advantages. For one, the car together with its fuel tanks – and this is not true of aftermarket solutions – is crash tested as a total system; so it is very safe. Second, the engine was specifically configured for LPG operation and is therefore more durable than engines originally configured as just gasoline engines. In LPG mode, the 72 kW / 98 PS strong four-cylinder of the Golf BiFuel consumes 9.2 liters of LPG per 100 kilometers on average (149 g/km CO2). The bottom line for these 100 kilometers based on average prices for LPG in Germany: just €6.38*.

The all-around car: Within just three and a half years, the Golf Plus has made a name for itself as an established product in the Golf lineup. Its brand identity: clever like a van, compact like a Golf. This is now being followed up by a Golf Plus that has been further improved in many aspects, and in some cases with drastically improved fuel economy: the new common rail TDI engines themselves have reduced fuel consumption by up to 0.8 liters fuel per 100 kilometers, depending on the power level. A European-wide market launch will already take place in March 2009.

Visually, the new “Plus” forges a link to the classic body style of the just introduced sixth Golf generation. This is especially apparent at the front end. The rear bumper and roof rails were also redesigned. New steel and alloy wheels round out the exterior package of visual modifications. Inside, the further improved Golf Plus sports details like new upholstery materials and details also implemented in the Golf such as the new generation instruments, steering wheel options and the user interface to the automatic climate control system (Climatronic).

Technically, the Golf Plus also implements details that the new Golf introduced for the first time in this Volkswagen segment. Besides the new, fuel-efficient and very quiet common rail turbo-diesel engines (66 kW / 90 PS to 103 kW / 140 PS), they include numerous other innovations. The conventional automatic transmission is being eliminated on the Golf Plus and is being replaced by 6-speed and 7-speed dual clutch transmissions (DSG) that are as fuel-efficient as they are agile. Other new options on the Golf Plus are “Adaptive Cruise Control” (ACC), the “Park Assist” parking assistant and a rearview camera. Last but not least, the equipment lines were also restructured (Trendline, Comfortline and Highline as top version).

Volkswagen has today unveiled the remarkable Golf BlueMotion concept vehicle, a car capable of achieving a combined 74.3 mpg while emitting just 99 g/km of CO2. This matches the economy of the Polo BlueMotion, itself among the most efficient vehicles currently on sale.

The BlueMotion label was first attributed to the Polo in 2006 and represents the most efficient model in each of Volkswagen’s passenger car ranges. Since the Polo made its debut, BlueMotion versions of the Golf Mk V, Golf Estate, Golf Plus, Jetta, Touran, Passat, Passat Estate and Sharan have been launched.

The new Golf BlueMotion concept is powered by a highly-efficient and refined 1.6-litre TDI common rail diesel engine developing 105 PS and 184 lbs ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. Despite the focus on economy the Golf BlueMotion concept can reach 62 mph from rest in a respectable 11.3 seconds before going on to a top speed of 117 mph.

As with all BlueMotion models the Golf BlueMotion adopts a series of changes to drivetrain and aerodynamics in order to maximise the vehicle’s efficiency. A set of low rolling resistance tyres are joined by optimised aerodynamics and revised ratios in the five speed gearbox. The resulting combination of changes works to reduce loading on the engine to drive up economy and reduce emissions.

In common with every diesel model in the forthcoming new Golf range the BlueMotion concept is fitted with a diesel particulate filter.

Even in standard non-BlueMotion form, the new Golf sets new economy standards. The entry-level diesel Golf will be powered by a 2.0-litre TDI 110 PS common rail engine capable of achieving 62 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting 119 g/km of CO2. This matches the economy of the current Golf BlueMotion model.

The new Golf will go on sale in the UK in January next year; the BlueMotion model will follow around mid 2009.

Volkswagen will launch a new high-performance VW Golf GTI soon after its standard flagship hatchback, company sources have revealed.

It should arrive in showrooms in spring 2009, but we may get a sneak preview of the new GTI as soon as October, when a concept is tipped to be unveiled.

The new Volkswagen Golf GTI will keep the current car’s well-judged balance of ride, handling and refinement, although an extra edge will be added to improve steering and handling. This will help close the gap with the sporty new Scirocco, which makes today’s GTI feel a little soft.

Power will come from a 211bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre version of the group’s new global EA888 engine, equipped with the new valve-lift system developed by Audi.

Volkswagen is keen to make maintenance easier, and access to the turbo and oil cooler will be improved in a bid to cut servicing costs.

The VW GTI will get beefed-up looks too. It will have new bumpers front and rear, as well as different head and tail-lights. The headlights will have Audi-style LED running lights. Five-spoke 18in alloys will be standard, with 19in items on the options list.

The bad news for six-cylinder Golf fans is that there are no plans to replace the current R32 version, mainly because of EU emissions legislation.

Instead, VW plans to launch a four-wheel-drive R variant with a 265bhp version of the GTI engine.
