Once again, Volkswagen is throwing some punches at Worthersee this year. From the Golf GTI Edition 35 to showing off the insane Golf24 Nurburgring killer, they now drop the Golf R cabriolet concept on us. Stacked with 270hp it can hit a top speed of 150mph. Stopping on a dime is provided by a 17″ brake system w/ ventilated disc. Like the Eos, we could easily see this entering the “stance” scene!

Volkswagen has travelled to the largest GTI Meet in the world at Worthersee with an entire fleet of new models, concept cars and accessory highlights. After revealing the new Golf GTI Edition 35 in a world debut, the company that invented the GTI will be pulling the veils off some other secret projects of a sporty nature: Volkswagen is presenting the Golf R Cabriolet as a concept car with 270 PS of power and a top speed of 250 km/h; it is a fascinating thought experiment in cabrio dynamics. This “power cabrio” also demonstrates the inexhaustible potential of the Golf. But there is more news as well: other concept cars such as the Golf R Concept and the latest original accessories will make the GTI Meet (until June 4th) a mecca for every Volkswagen fan.

Golf R Cabriolet concept: Volkswagen just recently introduced the new Golf Cabriolet, and the designers and engineers of Volkswagen R GmbH have already come up with an extremely sporty variant of this model: the Golf R Cabriolet Concept. Like its closed top counterpart, the 199 kW / 270 PS Cabriolet concept races to the 100 km/h mark in less than six seconds. Their top speeds are also identical at 250 km/h. This makes the R Cabriolet the fastest open-top Golf ever. Even more impressive, however, is the engine’s tremendous torque – 350 Newton metres from a low 2,500 rpm make this cabriolet an ideal cruiser.

Like the closed-top Golf R, the cabriolet was lowered by 25 mm via a sport chassis. A 17-inch brake system with internally ventilated discs at all wheels and blue painted high-performance brake calipers (including R-logo) enables impressive deceleration values. Making contact to the road surface on the Golf R Cabriolet Concept are 19-inch “Talladega” alloy wheels with size 235 tires.

Naturally, the Golf R Cabriolet Concept also presents an especially sporty interior concept. Motorsport shell seats in dark blue carbon leather, combined with high-end Nappa leather in “Pure Grey”, set the tone here. The backs of the shell seats are painted in luxurious black piano paint. Upholstery piping and decorative seams provide for color contrast. Carbon accents emphasize the concept’s technical-sporty character. The sand-blasted aluminum door sill plates with black piano paint inlays display finely crafted workmanship.

Golf R Concept: Two variations of the Golf R Concept are also making strong visual statements at Worthersee. Like the classic Golf R and the R Cabriolet on display at Worthersee, the two Golf R Concepts are also powered by a 2.0-litre turbo engine with the mentioned 199 kW / 270 PS, which is as powerful as it is efficient.

The first version of the Golf R Concept attracts attention with mid-tone “Velvet Grey Metallic” exterior, polished 19-inch “Talladega” alloy wheels, orange painted brake calipers and carbon mirror caps.

The driver and front passenger have the pleasure of sitting on perfectly ergonomic motorsport shell seats. Their outer segments are upholstered in black Nappa leather; anthracite-coloured Nappa leather (“Light Anthracite”) is used towards the inner surfaces in the area of the lateral seat supports and towards the head section. The cross-stitched centre panels of the seat and seatback gets an even lighter Nappa leather (“Pure Grey”). The back shell glistens in black piano paint. The piping on the side sections of the seat and head section provide a fine contrast: the orange of the brake calipers is repeated here. Meanwhile, interior accents match the look of the mirror caps: carbon. The same material is also used for the steering wheel, gear shift lever and the door sill plates. Black piano paint characterizes the panels behind the inside door handles, the trim of the window controls and the trim of the gear shift grip.

The second model of the Golf R Concept is painted in the sophisticated “Aplomb Blue”. The 19-inch “Glendale” wheels that are new to the Golf line-up shine in “Brilliant Silver”. Once again, the exterior mirror caps, various interior accents and the door sill plates are made of carbon.

Parts of the back shells of the motorsport shell seats also feature carbon. Black Nappa leather covers the outer areas of the seat and seatback surfaces. Meanwhile, the ridge of the seats – a continuous stripe that runs along the lateral seat and back supports – consists of blue leather. The sport leather steering wheel’s inner segments and grip recesses were upholstered in “carbon leather”; characteristic of this lightweight material is its woven structure. Even the floor mats have a carbon look. The decorative seams here, as in the area of the parking brake lever, are styled in blue.

The Golf R – the top model of the Golf series, is on display in four special versions in Geneva. Especially high-end: the Golf R concept cars in exclusive exterior colours and two-tone leather combinations. Especially sporty: the Golf R in sophisticated motorsport look with carbon accents.

In Geneva, Volkswagen R GmbH is exhibiting four special interpretations of its successful Golf R model. The concept cars showcase the competence of Volkswagen R GmbH in generating contemporary sports appeal. “Based on the high demand and success of the Golf R, we decided to develop four high-end versions of this vehicle,” says Ulrich Richter, Managing Director of Volkswagen R GmbH.

Golf R in exclusive paints and two-tone leather

The Golf R versions in the exclusive “Oryx White” and “Carbon Steel Grey” exterior colours – with coordinated high-end Nappa leather interiors – interpret the top model in an especially exclusive way.

“Oryx White” is a sophisticated, pearl-effect paint. The vehicle rides on 19-inch Talladega wheels, a visual branding symbol of the most powerful production Golf ever. Inside, an elaborately upgraded seat system gives the Golf R its unique flair – this seat system was derived from Volkswagen R’s Exclusive programme. Volkswagen R GmbH has colour-coordinated the centre panels of the front sport seats and the rear bench seat with the car’s exterior by using a light-coloured “St. Tropez” Nappa leather; this colour is also used in the door inserts. Lateral seat supports in perforated leather give the seat and seatback an especially sporty elegance. The Nappa leather surface is black, and the perforation creates an exciting contrast to the underlying “St. Tropez” colour. This light colour is also applied to the seams of the door inserts, shift lever and parking brake lever boots and borders of the black floor mats. The car has brushed aluminium trim inserts and displays the R logo on the passenger’s side.

The second version of the Golf R is painted in the exclusive exterior colour “Carbon Steel Grey.” All interior detailing in “St. Tropez” colour in the white version is now executed in the sophisticated dark “Almandine Red” colour here. This creates an especially attractive interplay of colours around the perforated Nappa leather. This version also has 19-inch wheels and aluminum trim strips.

Golf R in motorsport look with carbon accents

The Golf R being presented in a separate lounge sports an exterior that captivates with its special “Space Grey” (mid-tone grey) colour, polished 19-inch “Talladega” alloy wheels, orange brake calipers and carbon mirror caps.

Inside is where this Golf R really picks up speed: the driver and front passenger are treated to motorsport shell seats with ideal ergonomics. They are upholstered in black Nappa leather; around the lateral seat supports toward the inside, as well as in the head section, the seating surfaces consist of anthracite-coloured Nappa leather (“Light Anthracite”). The cross-stitched centre panels of the seats and seatbacks are an even lighter grey (Nappa leather in “Pure Grey”). The back shell glistens in black piano paint. A refined contrast is formed by the piping on the side panels of the seat surface and the head section: the orange of the brake calipers is repeated here.

The car’s interior accents match the look of the door mirror shells: carbon. The same material is also used for the steering wheel, gear shift lever, inserts of the leather-trimmed sport steering wheel and the door sill plates. Black piano paint, on the other hand, is used on door panels behind the interior door handles, on electric window switch panels and the panel around the shift lever.

The second vehicle is painted in the high-end “Aplomb Blue.” Its 19-inch “Glendale” wheels are “Brilliant Silver.” As on the Golf R “Space Grey”, the door mirror caps, various interior accents and door sill plates are produced in carbon fibre. The shell seatbacks of the newly sculpted motorsport seats also utilize this extremely lightweight and high-strength material in certain areas. Elegant, black Nappa leather adorns the outer sections of the seat surfaces and backs. The crest of the seats – a wrap-around stripe on the lateral seat supports and seatbacks – is designed in blue leather. Meanwhile, the leather-trimmed sport steering wheel has inner segments and hand grips consisting of what is referred to as carbon leather; it has a characteristic webbed structure of lightweight and precious carbon material. Even the floor mats have a carbon look. Their decorative seams are blue as are the seams around the parking brake lever.

News and rumors about the Volkswagen Golf R coming to the states has died down for sometime now. However, our friends across the pond have been enjoying its presence since January. Seven months in to the scene and a fair share of tuning shops have had their way with the Golf R. Starting with 266hp, Sport-Wheels increased it to a 330hp beast or bull as they call it.

Sport-Wheels tuning company in Cologne nicknamed the new Volkswagen Golf R, “The Bull”. The power has been increased to well 330 hp and the suspension system has been updated for a more rigid and responsive behavior.

The 20-inch alloy wheels ULTRALEGGERA HLT by Italian Company OZ can be customized with black, silver, red finishing (standard finishing is available in Crystal Titanium, Matt Graphite Silver, Gold Race); the tires are of size 235/30.

The HLT technology couples lightness and resistance, necessary to pass the strictest tests. The HLT wheels (High Light Technologies) are developed with highest technologies derived from the experience gathered in F1 racing and in the main world racing events. Thanks to channel coating it is possible to obtain technical characteristic similar to a forged wheel, increasing drastically resistance, with a consequence reduction of the weight of the wheels.

VW’s potent new R is the quickest Golf ever. With 266bhp and four-wheel drive, the subtle R aims to provide devastating all-weather performance in a practical shell. The Golf R is supremely competent, more powerful and environmentally friendly than its preceding model Golf R32.

In the end, the Volkswagen Golf R comes up short in areas against the Evo and STI but overpowers them in the overall package. Still no word on a U.S offering…

Volkswagen’s GTI is the only car in this magazine’s history to be voted Automobile of the Year twice. And now there’s a hotter version, called the Golf R, on sale in Europe. Volkswagen of America hasn’t officially said whether the Golf R is coming here, but that didn’t stop us from taking one for a spin.

The “R” badge, you might have guessed, identifies this Golf as the successor to the R32, the four-wheel-drive über-GTI that was sold in the U.S. in two 5000-unit batches: the 2004 Mark 4 R32 and the 2008 Mark 5 R32. This Mark 6 edition very nearly evolved into the R36, with a 300-hp, 3.6-liter VR6 under the hood, until VW engineers started having second thoughts about fuel consumption and emissions. Management stepped away from the narrow-angle V-6 and instead switched to a forced-induction four-cylinder.

The 2.0-liter R engine develops 267 hp – 17 more horses than the last R32 and well above the current GTI’s 200-hp output. Thanks to 17.4 psi of boost, it also whips up 258 lb-ft of torque at a leisurely 2500 rpm, and unlike most turbocharged engines, this one is exceptionally linear, responsive, punchy, and refined. Whereas the R32′s VR6 was all part-accelerator growl, lift-off rumble, and full-throttle roar, the newly developed four-cylinder won’t try to engage your emotions with the odd overrun blat-blat, or even with faint turbocharger whine. It’s an efficient engine, and it works very well in combination with the intuitive six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox (DSG), but it lacks that aggressive, rev-hungry rawness and the R32′s ability to read the throttle foot’s intentions.

Like the R32, the Golf R retains all-wheel drive as a key differentiator from the GTI. The additional traction and power help scoot the DSG-equipped Golf R to 62 mph in 5.5 seconds, 1.4 seconds ahead of the GTI, according to the factory. The Golf R can be had with two or four doors and a six-speed manual or DSG transmission, although Volkswagen might import it to the States in DSG/four-door form only, as it did with the last R32.

On smooth pavement, the Golf R is a joy to whip to ten-tenths. Or even eleven-tenths – thanks to the latest stability control software, undue lift-off oversteer is as expertly compensated as excessive understeer. Sure, you feel a bit like a passenger when the chips interfere, but the result justifies the means. When exiting a corner molto presto, the Haldex system’s clutch engages much more promptly than in lesser 4Motion models, thereby ensuring maximum grip long before the front wheels start to scramble. Although the strong and responsive brakes lack that ultimate-sports-car sharpness and stamina, their performance is remarkable by hot-hatch standards.

We often think that all-wheel drive eliminates torque steer, but there’s still plenty of energy flowing through your palms when you boot the Golf R’s throttle – even if this car is much better at putting the power down than the front-wheel-drive GTI. Despite sitting about an inch lower than the GTI and benefiting from the optional adaptive chassis control system (which firms the dampers in Sport mode), the sportiest VW can least conceal its age on undulating and twisty roller-coaster terrain. (After all, the Mark 6 Golf is essentially an updated Mark 5.) When pushed hard, the R displays plenty of roll, yaw, and pitch, the yellow stability control warning light flashing rhythmically. The Golf R’s movements aren’t as Teutonically disciplined as expected, although, to be fair, roadholding and handling were compromised to a certain extent by the soft winter tires fitted on our test car.

Those tires were mounted on standard, R-specific eighteen-inch wheels. In no way a stripped-out race car, the R is actually stuffed full of extra features. Outside, it’s distinguishable by a ground-hugging front air dam, a roof spoiler, and a rear diffuser framing two center-mounted exhaust outlets. Swiveling bixenon headlamps and LED taillights are standard. Inside, there are special touches such as R-specific instrument faces, aluminum trim, power-adjustable sport seats, standard navigation and automatic climate control, and a fat-rimmed steering wheel with the inevitable squared-off bottom.

Still, this four-wheel-drive, dual-clutch, turbocharged, pricey hatchback has stepped into the arena of masters like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and the Subaru Impreza WRX STI. And in that world, the Golf R is probably more of a relaxed cruiser than a high-strung bruiser. The mix of DSG and AWD is tuned for maximum refinement instead of no-holds-barred sportiness. The whole R concept is very much based on offering a higher equipment level rather than being a bare-bones racer. To compete with the likes of the Evo and the STI, VW would need to consider a spicier variant – a bit lighter, a little more powerful, and more focused. Until then, however, Volkswagen has given us a very capable gran turismo dressed in a hatchback body.

We have yet to receive any info on the Golf R coming to North America but just imagine when APR gets a hold of one. Utilizing Sportec’s Stage 1 ECU upgrade, UK’s APS takes the standard Golf R 2.0l pushing 267hp/258tq to a mad 300hp/321tq. This results in a stock 0-62 in 5.7sec to a modified 5.3sec.

APS of Brackley, UK importer for the Swiss based Sportec range of vehicle performance enhancements, is pleased to announce the launch of a new Stage One ECU upgrade package for the new Volkswagen Golf R.

In standard form the turbocharged 2.0-litre four cylinder Golf R produces 267bhp (200KW) and 258lb.ft (354Nm) of torque. Sportec’s careful recalibration of the fuel, ignition timing and boost pressure settings via an extensively proven ECU remap sees power output leap to 300bhp (224KW) at 6000rpm and 321lb.ft (440Nm) of torque at 2750 rpm, delivering significant performance improvements which greatly increase the driver enjoyment of the four wheel drive Golf R superhatch.

For example, the Golf R’s 0-100 kmh (0-62mph) acceleration time is reduced from 5.7 to 5.3 seconds, with the top speed increasing to 160mph (265 kmh).

Suitable for both six speed manual and DSG versions of the Golf R, the Sportec Stage One upgrade package is available now from UK Sportec importer APS of Brackley, priced at £649.00 including installation, road testing and VAT @ 17.5%.
