The entry list for the second highlight of the VLN endurance racing championship at the Nurburgring, the race in the ‘Green Hell’, is fantastic. The organizing MSC Ruhrblitz Bochum has received more than 190 entries for the 6h ADAC Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen ‘um die Pokal der Opel-Werke Bochum’. This demonstrates once more the high level of the endurance racing championship and its status as the most popular club sporting series in Europe. What, however, would be a full grid without an appropriate quality? This is what the VLN fans do not need to worry about. More than three dozens of top cars in the leading group and a great number of ambitious privateers in the wide middle field of the series will provide genuine and living motor sport. The race over the distance of six hours will be started on 27th of August at 12 o’clock exactly. The positions on the grid will be decided during the time practice between 08:30 and 10:00hrs. Entrance is free all around the Nordschleife. Tickets giving access to the paddocks and to the open grandstands at the Grand Prix Circuit are available at the cash boxes for a family-friendly price of 12 Euros. A 30 minutes summary of the race will be shown in channel Sport 1 on 2nd September at 16:00hrs.

The Nurburgring Nordschleife fascinates all race drivers, starting from the ambitious privateer up to the experienced and professional race driver – hardly anyone can withstand the magical attraction of this 24.369 kilometers long tarmac track in the Eifel region. More than 500 drivers from Germany, Europe and the rest of the world will take part in the second 6h race of the 2011 season and finally celebrate the fastest ones. There will not only be big fights for the win at the end of the race day but also for the may cups in the more than 30 different classes organized within the endurance racing championship.

ROWE-Racing will take the start with visible pride. Roland Rehfeld (Blankenfelde/ Germany) and Alexander Roloff (Berlin/ Germany), who dominated at the last race together with Michael Zehe (Floersheim/ Germany), will this time be supported by Thomas Jager (Munich/ Germany) for the Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen and aim at another result on the podium. The sister car will be driven by Zehe and his team mates Hubert Haupt, Klaus Rader (both from Munich/ Germany) and Marco Schelp (Berlin/ Germany). The competition is incredibly high even in the own camp: Black Falcon, Mamerow-Racing and Horn-Motorsport are prepared to take up the challenge for the win.

Audi will be represented amongst others by the experienced sports car drivers Christopher Haase (Kulmbach/ Germany), Christopher Mies (Heiligenhaus/ Germany), Marc Basseng (Leutenbach/ Germany) and Frank Stippler (Bad Munstereifel/ Germany) in two R8 LMS entered by Phoenix-Racing. The super sports car from Ingolstadt has recently gained its 100th victory in Asia which shall be followed by the 101st success at the Nordschleife. The spearhead of the Porsche teams has been entered by Manthey-Racing. The crew which is based in Meuspath near the Nurburgring is still waiting for their first victory of the season with the GT3-911. The only success for the team in the current season was scored with the Hybrid Porsche at the fourth round. For the 6h race, the green yellow 911 GT3 R will be driven by Marc Lieb (Ludwigsburg/ Germany), Lucas Luhr (Switzerland) and Arno Klasen (Karlshausen/ Germany) who finally wishes to celebrate his 25th overall victory. The two Porsche teams of Pinta- and Frikadelli-Racing have also already demonstrated their performance but their statistic figures of the season do neither include a victory so far.

The class of VLN Specials up to 2600 cc cylinder capacity and turbo engines (SP4T) will feature an interesting addition for the Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen. Whilst there will only be four cars at the start, they all figure totally different concepts. The successful Ford Focus entered by the ‘FH Köln Motorsport powered by Ford’ will meet the Audi TT RS of the team Raeder-Motorsport who have contracted a top team with drivers Frank Biela (Monaco), Christian Hohenadel (Illingen/ Germany) and Michael Ammermuller (Pocking/ Germany). Diversion will also be provided by Martin Muller (Griesheim/ Germany) and Ulli Andreé in the Volvo C30 T5 as well as by the four Italians Paolo Previati, Giuseppe Tobia, Matteo Cocovi and Sabina Raviglione in a Renault Clio NZW. Speaking of Clio: With almost 30 cars, the Cup class with the same name and organised by VLN partner Renault will again be the strongest class in the field at the seventh round of the season.

At the race for the cups supplied by the Bochum plant of Opel, the race cars with the Opel Blitz are of course particularly in the focus. The variety of Opel race cars ranges from the Opel Manta well advanced in years up to the dynamic Opel Astra OPC in the class of VLN Specials up to 2000 cc cylinder capacity with turbo engine. The crews in both cars include Opel Sports Director Volker Strycek (Dehrn/ Germany). He will share the cockpit of the Manta with Olaf Beckmann (Oststeinbek/ Germany) and Peter Hass (Hofheim/ Germany) and the one of the Astra entered by Kissling-Motorsport with Hannu Luostarinen and Julius Nieminen, both from Finland.

Refuel less, drive longer: That’s the recipe for success of the further developed 911 GT3 R Hybrid: At the wheel of the Version 2.0 race car, Porsche works drivers Richard Lietz (Austria), Marco Holzer (Germany) and Patrick Long (USA) clinched the first victory for the innovative race car from Weissach at round four of the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship. While almost all other direct opponents had to pit three times to refuel, the Hybrid-911 made only two stops and with this yielded the first victory for a Hybrid-Porsche. Well known for its efficiency, Manthey Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3 RSR with Porsche factory drivers Marc Lieb (Germany), Romain Dumas (France) as well as Manthey pilot Lucas Luhr (Switzerland) also managed with two pit stops and made Porsche’s double victory perfect.

The second race outing of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid in the 2011 Long Distance Championship marked the successful conclusion to intensive preparations for the Nürburgring 24 hour race on 25/26 June. “We’re very pleased with the technical level of the vehicle and the reliability of the hybrid system,” says Hartmut Kristen, Head of Motorsport at Porsche. “Compared to our rivals, we saved one pit stop and with less external energy input our lap times were just as quick. This is what we mean by Porsche Intelligent Performance. I’m particularly thrilled that Manthey Racing’s 911 GT3 RSR also underlined the famed efficiency of the Porsche 911 models and clinched second place.”

Priority in the further development of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid was clearly on increasing efficiency. For this, the weight of the vehicle, including the hybrid components, was reduced from 1,350 to 1,300 kilograms. The weight of the hybrid components was reduced by 20 percent through targeted optimization. The general hybrid layout was adopted from the 2010 model.

The output of both electric motors in the portal axle increased from 60 to 75 kilowatts each. For seconds at a time, pilots now have about 200 hp more at their disposal, which equals ca. 23 kW (32 hp) of additional conventional power per Nordschleife lap. Depending on the programming, this electrical power is automatically activated through use of the throttle pedal. Moreover, hybrid pilots can manually call up this extra power, for instance when overtaking. With the portal axle driving the front wheels, the four-litre, now 465 hp six-cylinder boxer engine, which drives the rear axle, was reduced in power and optimized with respect to fuel consumption.

“Our Hybrid-911 ran like clockwork,” says Marco Holzer. “Aside from the reliable technology and low fuel consumption, the key to success today was that we all drive at similarly high speeds and we didn’t make any mistakes,” adds teammate Richard Lietz.

The yellow and green Manthey Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR also drove a faultless race. Trailing by just seven seconds, Marc Lieb, Romain Dumas and Lucas Luhr claimed second place. “That race was almost perfect. Unfortunately our 911 GT3 R, which I shared with Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas, was shunted rather roughly from the track by a competitor,” says double-starter Marc Lieb.

Opening round of the VLN series took place yesterday with a lot of focus on the SP9 class. However, deep in the field were two Volkswagen Scirocco GT24′s ready to punish the competition in SP3T. 16 cars would make up this class with only 5 finishing the 4 hour race.

Main competition came from Raeder Motorsports Audi TT RS as it ran consistent times with the GT24′s. The fastest lap came from the no301 Scirocco with an 8:51.063. The sister no302 had a fast lap of 8:54.749.

The blistering lap times and bulletproof reliability gave LMS Engineering a 1-2 in class and an outstanding 14th and 18th overall!

Due to tech difficulties the Audi TT RS would not finish as well as Raeder’s sister Audi TT S.

In sunny spring weather last Saturday, seven Porsche 911 GT3 race cars entered by Manthey-Racing completed their laps at the Nordschleife for the first time in the year 2011.

The first common roll-out of the VLN teams revealed that the season 2011 will be a very special one, both for the fans and for the participants: A sensational mix of top drivers and more makes than ever are promising fascinating racing at the most beautiful race track of the world! Whilst Porsche will remain to be the strongest make and, with Manthey-Racing, has a top team in the fight about the race win, their competitors have not taken a rest during winter and did certainly catch up. The very competitive spearhead of Manthey Racing will certainly be challenged by not less than seven brand-new SLS AMG GT3, entered by four teams. Not to forget last year’s winning team of the 24h Race, Schnitzer Motorsport, who will compete at the Eifel circuit with two completely updated BMW M3 GT. For Olaf Manthey, the Phoenix-Audi R8 prepared at Meuspath, just around the corner of the Manthey team, must also be considered to be one of the favorite teams. “We are well prepared in the team of Manthey-Racing”, says the experienced strategist. “Everything else will remain to be seen in the next rounds.”

Lucas Luhr who has come back to the team will again be part of the “big” race car in the traditional yellow green design and with start number 11 as regular driver. Due to the close cooperation with Porsche Motorsport, the works drivers Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas will this year again drive the GT3-R. The crew is completed by Arno Klasen. “The competition will definitely be much closer”, said Lieb at the press conference. “We intend to continue just where we have stopped in 2010”. The race driver from Ludwigshafen/ Germany regrets that according to current plans, he will compete in only three of the ten VLN races for Mantey. “I will however definitely participate in the two 6h races!”.

The opening round of the VLN Langstreckenmeisterschaft Nürburgring will start this Saturday with the timed practice between 08:30hrs and 10:00hrs. The start of the 58th ADAC Westfalenfahrt over the distance of four hours on the 24.369 kilometres long combination of the Nürburgring short connection and the Nordschleife will then be given at 12 o’clock exactly.

Bonk-Motorsport celebrates its third VLN title

The champions of the 2010 season of the VLN Langstreckenmeisterschaft Nürburgring are Mario Merten (Nürburg/ Germany) and Wolf Silvester (Nürnberg/ Germany). Despite their retirement at the 35th DMV Münsterlandpokal race, the duo of Bonk Motorsport was able to celebrate its second championship title as team after the year 2006. For local hero Merten, it was even his third victory as he had also gained in 2002. During the prizegiving ceremony and in the presence of the cheering crowd, VLN Managing Director Robert Rust (Merzenich/ Germany) symbolically handed over start number one to the new champions.

The final overall win was sorted out amongst three German premium makes. Arno Klasen (Karlshausen/ Germany), Marc Lieb (Ludwigsburg/ Germany) and Lucas Luhr (Switzerland) were celebrating the last victory in 2010 in their Manthey Porsche after 4:01:45,709 hours racing time. They had an advance of 3:35.857 minutes ahead of the second placed Frank Stippler (Bad Münstereifel/ Germany) and Marc Basseng (Neusalza-Spremberg/ Germany) in the Audi R8 LMS entered by Phoenix-Racing. The podium was completed by Bernd Schneider (Bottighofen/ Germany) and Chris Mamerow (Castrop-Rauxel/ Germany) in the SLS AMG GT3 of Mamerow-Racing. A 30 minutes summary of the race will be broadcasted in Sport 1 on 5 November at 9 a.m.

”We will now definitely celebrate the championship properly”, said Merten and Silvester happily after the race. “Our title was occasionally handing by a thread during the season. We did however not stop fighting and a part of our competitors made some mistakes. The best package has won finally – a competitive class and a fantastic team. We are more than happy.”

After the start, Jörg and Tim Bergmeister in the Mühler Porsche first went into the lead. After eleven race laps and into third position, the duo had to retire with technical failure. At that moment, Basseng/ Stippler were in the race lead ahead of the Manthey Porsche. Lieb then slowly closed the gap to Stippler. When it started to rain, the Manthey trio then took advantage of their perfect strategy. During a scheduled pit stop, the team changed to rain tyres. Phoenix had come to a pit stop just before the rain started and had fitted slick tyres as the track was still dry. “In addition, I stayed out on the track one lap too long”, admitted Basseng who was not at all happy with their second place. “We are fighting to win. And once again, we did not succeed in doing so today.” The Manthey team in contrast was very happy. „It is always a good feeling to finish the season with a victory“, said Lieb. “Today, everything was perfect again. Arno had a fantastic start turn and Lucas did a perfect job as always – I could thus finish the race as winner. I must admit that we also had a little bit of luck thereby.” After the victory of the SLS AMG GT3 entered by Black Falcon at the ninth round, Mamerow Racing was able to follow up their success at the final with another place on the podium. “This was a perfect race for us”, said five times DTM Champion Schneider. “Our testing programme for the SLS is developing as scheduled. We are still lacking a bit of speed compared to the top cars but we were able to collect valuable data again. Position three is a perfect result.” Mamerow added: “Absolutely brilliant that we succeeded in finishing on the podium at our second participation.”

Behind the top three, Christian Hohenadel (Illingen/ Germany) and Lance David Arnold (Duisburg/ Germany) in the GT3 Corvette missed the podium by 27.784 seconds only. Patrick Long (USA) finished his first participation at the Nürburgring Nordschleife together with Christian Menzel (Kelberg/ Germany) and Richard Westbrook (Great Britain) in the Haribo Porsche into fifth place.

The last competition for Andreas and Ralf Schall (both from Dornstadt/ Germany) in the Mercedes-Benz 190 E well advanced in years finished with a satisfying win in the class of group H vehicles up to 2.500 cc cylinder capacity. The car had its last participation in 2003 when Schall senior retired after an accident.

When we first broke the news on the Audi TT RS customer program from Audi, the internet just about went down! Kidding, but it has become one of our top articles and the fact is people loved the car. If your’e a DTM fan and remember the great years when Audi had the original TT running, this brought that excitement back. Raeder Motorsport has been running both a TT S and an A3 in the VLN series. Audi and Raeder partnered up on this project with a great outcome. A first in class and 8th overall over the weekend.

The new Audi TT RS, which may possibly extend the Audi customer sport program in the future, made a successful debut. Christoph Breuer, Marc Hennerici and Christopher Mies achieved a much-noted eighth place overall and victory in the SP 4T class at the ninth round of the Endurance Championship. On its first laps on the legendary Nürburgring-Nordschleife the prototype fielded by the Raeder Motorsport team, which is jointly developed by the Technical Development (TE) and Production divisions of AUDI AG and quattro GmbH, immediately ran without the slightest technical problem.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 R continues to shine with impressive reliability.

At round three of the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship, Mamerow Racing celebrated their first win of the season. Manthey Racing had secured victory with the GT3 racer from Weissach at the first two meetings of the series. Seven Porsche finished in the top ten.

Taking up the race from fourth on the grid, Chris Mamerow ran with the leading group. His teammate, Porsche works driver Wolf Henzler, managed to make up places. About 35 minutes before the scheduled finish the race was stopped after a tragic accident. At this time Mamerow held the lead and was declared the winner.

Armin Hahne, Jochen Krumbach and Marc Gindorf celebrated a successful premiere in their Manthey Racing 911 GT3 R. From seventh on the grid the 911 sporting a black and white striped design moved up to finish in fourth.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 R has been delivered to customer teams since spring 2010. In developing the vehicle, emphasis was placed on improving driveability and making handling easier. The 911 GT3 R features a four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine delivering 480 hp (353 kW). A six-speed sequential gearbox transmits the power to the rear axle.

The development of the 1,200 kg lightweight 911 GT3 R is based on the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup launched in September 2009 for one-make cup racing. Thanks to a 0.2-litre increase in engine capacity, the GT3 R delivers 30 hp more than its Cup pendant. Both race vehicles are based on the extra-wide body of the street-legal 911 GT3 RS.

An anti-lock brake system (ABS), traction control and an e-gas with “throttle-blip” function help pilots familiarise themselves quicker to the new GT3 race vehicle compared to its predecessor the 911 GT3 Cup S, also making it easier for ambitious amateur racers to get used to the car. The flared wheel arches front and rear show the wider track compared to the previous model. The underbody of the vehicle is completely covered and features a rear diffuser. Compared to the forerunner model, the adjustment range of the rear wing has been increased.

The Porsche 911 has again underlined its supremacy as the world’s most successful GT race car: At the second race of the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship, the new Porsche 911 GT3 R celebrated its second straight win. The innovative 911 GT3 R Hybrid, which features two electric motors supplementing the combustion engine in the rear, finished third.

In a repeat of the season-opening race, the yellow-green Porsche 911 GT3 R fielded by Manthey Racing ran without any technical problems from start to finish. The result for the driver trio Timo Bernhard (Germany), Romain Dumas (France) and Marcel Tiemann (Monaco): Win number two of the season.

Works drivers Joerg Bergmeister and Wolf Henzler (both Germany) drove an entirely trouble free race in the new Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid. The hybrid vehicle impressed with outstanding efficiency and needed one less pit stop than most competitors. “The hybrid system clearly helped us to save fuel. Moreover, it’s a great feeling to have those extra 120 kW from the electric motors when you accelerate out of the corners,” describes Joerg Bergmeister.

Mamerow Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3 R with drivers Chris Mamerow and Sascha Bert (both Germany) also put in an excellent drive until they were sidelined by an accident while running second.

The standard Porsche 911 GT3 RS was taken through another test for the 24 hour race in May. “We made some changes to the set-up during the practice and race in preparation for the 24 hour race,” explains former DTM pilot Roland Asch (Germany). “When you’re in the middle of the race action, you almost forget you’re sitting in a road-going car. I’m very much looking forward to contesting the 24 hour race.”

Round three of the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship takes off on 24 April at midday with a duration of four hours.

The eagery awaited debut of the Audi R8 LMS entered by the team Black Falcon was crowned with success at the opening race of the VLN Langstreckenmeisterschaft Nürburgring. The first pole position ever for Audi in the VLN history and overall position seven in the race which faced such a first class entry, the VLN Champion team had a more than successful start in the top of the most successful GT and Touring Car series in Europe.

The Team Black Falcon had originally scheduled this first round of the VLN Langstreckenmeisterschaft to be merely an advanced test for the new Audi R8 LMS race car but at the end of the timed practice, this rather cautious project was caught up by reality. Under very difficult weather and track conditions it was the Black Falcon new team member Johannes Stuck who, with a time of 8:37,102 minutes, brought a car with start number 1 onto start position 1 for the first time ever in the VLN history. At the same time, Black Falcon achieved the first pole position ever for Audi in the endurance racing championship.

‘Everything was simply running perfectly today’, said Johannes Stuck after the timed practice. ‘The R8 felt really very good and the tyres worked perfectly despite the low outside temperatures. I realized from the very beginning of the lap that I was really very quick considering these difficult track conditions. I had a big smile in my face all over the complete lap because everything was so impeccable. I am now simply happy that we even gained pole position in the end.’

Johannes Stuck was then also able to dominate the exciting start of the race and with the fastest lap time of 8:27,650 minutes underlined again the potential both of car and driver. In the battles which followed in the next laps, Stuck however backed off deliberately several times. The motto for the first race of the season was not at all to take too big risks but rather collect as much experience as possible with the Audi R8 LMS.

The other two drivers of the R8 team with number one, the two VLN Champions Sean-Paul Breslin and Christer Jöns, then followed the same principle. They, too, got used to the new race car very quickly and completed similar lap times as Stuck after a few turns.
The whole team, inlcuding the partners and sponsors of Black Flacon, were more than happy when Jöns took the chequered flag after four hours race time. This first race participation for the Audi R8 LMS finished with an excellent 7th overall position and a fifth place in class SP9 for the team Black Falcon.

The second R8 team with drivers Vimal Mehta, Bona Ventura and Sean-Patrick Breslin, too, finished the race at the debut of the R8. All of the three drivers used the race to gain a lot of experience with the GT3 race car at the Nordschleife.

Another Black Falcon team with Russian drivers Oleg Volin and Evgeniy Vertunov had a very good race in class V5 of series production cars. Vertunov, the WRC rally driver and Russian Champion of 2007, and his team mate Volin achieved second position in their class.

Philip Leisen, Carsten Knechtges and current VLN Champion Alex Böhm celebrated a class win at the end of the race and thus completed the almost perfect start of the season for the Team Black Falcon.”

Excellent start to the 2010 VLN series for the Audi R8 LMS. Johannes Stuck put the Black Falcon Audi on pole, just ahead of the infamous Manthey Racing Porsche. Along with Black Falcon, ABT Sportsline and Phoenix Racing were there with their R8′s. Unfortunately for Phoenix Racing, their R8′s did not see the finish line. The #97 car hit difficulties in the last 26 minutes battling with eventual overall winner, Manthey Racing.

Team ABT Sportsline claimed second and fourth places with its two Audi R8 LMS in the opening round of the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nürburgring. In the process DTM star Mattias Ekström and Emmanuel Collard missed overall victory by a mere 14.5 seconds. Frank Stippler, Marc Basseng and Pierre Kaffer (Phoenix Racing) were unlucky: They held a commanding lead before being forced to retire just after half-distance with gear-shift problems. The new Audi customer team Black Falcon, which started from pole position in its first race with the R8 LMS thanks to Johannes Stuck, also made a resounding impression.
