VWvortex’s managing editor Jamie Vondruska talks about his favorite features, and what to ask about when test driving the all-new Passat.

The Volkswagen Jetta has long been a favorite of enthusiasts who appreciate the European focus on handling, fit and finish–but not necessarily the European price tag attached to other famous brands. The all-new 2011 Jetta 6, with its sophisticated styling and German engineering, sets a new standard in its class and is a perfect candidate for personalization. Fourtitude got the chance of a lifetime to attend a high-performance driving class for a day. But rather than just learning the ropes in any old beater with a four-banger under the hood, this school gets your eye in piloting Audi’s flagship supercar, the R8. (continue reading…)

When the Touareg was first launched in 2004, Volkswagen was already fashionably late to the SUV party and needed to make a solid impression. While most of us expected the archetypal suburban utility vehicle, VW instead introduced a vehicle with the off-road worthiness of a Range Rover and the comfort of the best luxury sedans, genuinely impressing everyone with its ability to take passengers comfortably to the farthest reaches of terrain. With a true low-range gearbox, locking center and rear diffs, electronically adjustable ride height, variable rate shock absorbers and a plethora of electronic gizmos, the Touareg was a much larger tour de force than any of us expected — it even captured Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year award in 2004. So after selling close to 500,000 units since its introduction the time has come for an all-new second generation. Bigger and stronger, yet lighter and more economical, the new model has received significant improvements; after driving it in Europe we can report that it is a worthy sequel to the original.

With H20i landing on the same weekend as Petit Le Mans, we choose Petit. I shot George a note but he was headed to H20i. It was good choice as Petit was a wash and H20i had some amazing rides. Two of our favorites are below. Big wheels from other brands and a bagged stance have made the trip over to our shores. Head over and read the full report and immense galleries.

Autumn is coming. You can feel it. The crispness in the air and darkness encroaching into early evenings are signals of the end of the summer show season. And with this end comes that weekend on the calendar reserved for H20 International (H20i) in Ocean City, Maryland.

It’s hard to believe H20i has been going strong for twelve years, but it has. Year after year of consistency in beautiful and car show-friendly Ocean City have helped the event become one of the biggest in the American enthusiast scene and H20i remains quite unique.

Jay Pichardo of Greenbrier Volkswagen posted this shot of the new 2010 Jetta interior in the forums on vwvortex. What do you think?

Light, small, simple: the virtues of the first generation of water-cooled Volkswagens are easy to define. Be they Guigiaro-designed Rabbits (a.k.a. Golf I) and Sciroccos, or other VW variants like the first-gen Jetta, second-gen Scirocco, the Cabriolet or the Westmoreland-built Rabbit Pickup, these cars have a fierce following by both rabid owners and specialty shops who specialize in parts for the eldest of watercooled VW statesmen. It’s no surprise then that a show like Mk1 Madness put on by DCI shares the lean-and-mean virtues of the cars it honors and that its attendees are truly devoted fans.

Being the biggest in any particular genre has both good and bad sides. You’re the giant and the leader, but you’re also the litmus. Few would argue against the claim that Waterfest is the biggest Volkswagen and Audi enthusiast show in the States, and many likely wondered how the economy would affect the VW/Audi hobby as Waterfest 15 loomed large on the calendar.
The event itself remains a juggernaut. Organizers claimed 21,000 visitors last year and the crowds appeared consistent with that figure. It has always been a consistent and strong show – a mid-July must-see from its very earliest days in the rented parking lot of a community college in Suffern, NY.
