The SKODA Motorsport team will continue the Fabia Super 2000 project also in the upcoming year 2012. This year the project has led to the greatest achievements in the brand’s long history of motorsport efforts. Freddy Loix claimed victory on the Intercontinental Rally Challenge qualifier in Ypres for a seventh time in his factory Skoda Fabia Super 2000. The Ukraine Rally is part of the IRC calendar for the first time in history. Unfamiliar tracks will be a big challenge for all the crews to take part.
The fourth IRC event this season, the Prime Yalta Rally scheduled to take place in the Ukraine over June 2-4, will see SKODA Motorsport (factory team) at full strength. The team’s ambitions for this asphalt rally that is part of the IRC calendar for the first time in history are high. Besides the reigning IRC champions Juho Hanninen & Mikko Markkula, the event will see a further four Fabia Super 2000s, including one to be driven by Jan Kopecky, currently second in the IRC rankings. The third event of the IRC championship offered a thrilling spectacle from the first kilometer to the last. For the first time in history, the series moved to Corsica to take the drivers to 321 kilometers of a narrow track and a mix of bends and difficult uphill and downhill stretches. Jan Kopecky & Petr Stary of Skoda Motorsport (factory team) had an impressive finish but, despite two fastest times on the final day, came second, 16 seconds behind Thierry Neuville in a Peugeot. Both Skoda Motorsport factory crews will appear at the second event of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge to take place in the Canary Islands from 14-16 April. Furthermore, the field will include two Fabia Super 2000s supported by importers – Skoda Belgium and Skoda UK. Skoda took the first three places in this race last year. Skoda has been officially awarded the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) Champion honours and Juho Hanninen & Mikko Markkula of Skoda Motorsport (factory team) have received the award for the best crew of the 2010 IRC Drivers competition. Skoda thus takes over from Peugeot, the team that previously dominated the championship for three years. Furthermore, this fantastic achievement by the entire team is underlined by the runner-up position of Jan Kopecky & Petr Stary, another crew that is part of Skoda’s factory team. Kris Meek (Peugeot), the winner of the series last year, finished third. The Head of Skoda Motorsport Michal Hrabánek was handed the cup for the winner of the Manufacturers competition. After finishing second at the 52nd San Remo Rally, this year’s tenth Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) event, Škoda Motorsport’s crew Juho Hänninen – Mikko Markkula have become the IRC champions in the Drivers Competition. Also supported by the factory team, Freddy Loix – Frédéric Miclotte finished third, Jan Kopecký – Petr Starý, another regular Škoda Motorsport crew, came sixth.
