The SKODA Motorsport team will continue the Fabia Super 2000 project also in the upcoming year 2012. This year the project has led to the greatest achievements in the brand’s long history of motorsport efforts. The participation in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge championship with the Fabia Super 2000 where SKODA has won the titles in both the Drivers and Manufacturers categories for two consecutive years remains the brand’s top priority.

Furthermore, one of the factory crews will newly appear in selected rallies of the European Championship and the factory team will also appear in the home rally championship. Juho Hanninen and Jan Kopecky remain the brand’s factory drivers for 2012. The first event in 2012 to see the factory team in action is the Janner Rally that is taking place in Austria over the first weekend of January.

Commenting on the team’s agenda in 2012, Head of the SKODA Motorsport team Michal Hrabanek says: “SKODA’s top priority will be to defend the IRC titles we have won in the last two years. Three drivers in factory-prepared Fabia Super 2000s are going to fight for points in the Manufacturers category – Jan Kopecky and Juho Hanninen of SKODA Motorsport (factory team) and Andreas Mikkelsen of SKODA UK Motorsport. With future prospects in mind, we want to gain experience in selected events of the European Championship where we will be represented by Juho Hanninen & Mikko Markkula, one of our factory crews. Intending to become even more visible in the home market, the other factory crew, Jan Kopecky & Pavel Dresler, will appear on Czech tracks as part of the Czech Championship. Pavel Dressler has replaced Petr Stary who, unfortunately, has a long-standing health problem – in this connection, the whole team wishes Petr a fast recovery.”

2011 SWRC Champion Juho Hanninen: “I have learned a lot at SKODA Motorsport over the last three years, and these have been more than good times for the entire team. I believe that we will be successful also next year that holds some new rallies for us, but that is exactly what makes this sport so exciting. I am pretty certain that we are going to make another step ahead with the Fabia.”

Three times IRC Vice-Champion Jan Kopecky: “I appreciate the opportunity to continue cooperating with SKODA Motorsport. Our ambition in the Czech championship is of course to keep appearing on the top ranks and the goal in the selected IRC events is to always win as many points as possible in order to help SKODA win the third title in the Manufacturers category. I want to say a big thank you to Petr Stary for great three years that we have spent together and wish him a fast recovery.”

The Mlada Boleslav-based car manufacturer is celebrating 110 years of its motorsport efforts this year and 2011, quite symbolically, has been the most successful year in this long and unique history – SKODA has comfortably repeated its last year’s victory in the Manufacturers category of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge championship, Fabia Super 2000 drivers have won the first three places in the Drivers category of the IRC (Mikkelsen 1st, Kopecky 2nd, Hanninen 3rd) and Juho Hanninen & Mikko Markkula have won the first-ever SWRC title for SKODA. At the end of this year, SKODA Motorsport and its Fabia Super 2000s made their debut in the Race of Champions, a prestigious multi-discipline event with a history of over 20 years.

SKODA wants to reduce the CO2 emissions from the thermal power plant SkoEnergo by one quarter until the year 2015. The reduction is to be achieved primarily through the utilization of biomass. In 2015, about one third of the total power generated shall come from renewable energies. The power plant of the SKODA subsidiary SkoEnergo was put into operation in 2000. It produces power for the vehicle production at the headquarters of the manufacturer and serves as the thermal power plant for the city of Mlada Boleslav.

The annual power generation by SkoEnergo amounts to 420,000 MWh. Even today, 50,000 MWh of that amount is already generated through the incineration of biomass. Until the year 2015, the amount of power generated from biomass should increase to 140,000 MWh. One third of the generated power should then be provided by renewable sources.

Michael Oeljeklaus, the SKODA board member for production and logistics as well as the chairman of the supervisory board of SkoEnergo, underlines the important contribution of this measure toward the sustainability strategy of the car manufacturer: “In order to evaluate the environmental friendliness of a vehicle, one must take its entire lifecycle into consideration. In doing so, an environmentally friendly production is of extraordinary importance. We have already achieved significant improvements with the construction of the power plant in 2000. Now, SkoEnergo wants to take another giant step in the next four years and reduce CO2 emissions by a total of 25 percent until 2015. This is a central measure within the framework of our sustainability policy and shows how determined SKODA pushes its efforts in environmental protection,” said Oeljeklaus.

Miroslav Zdansky, the commercial manager of SkoEnergo, adds: “Our company is steadily reducing CO2 emissions. Biomass has already been used since the year 2005 and to date has proven to be very effective. The savings amount to about 50,000 metric tons of CO2 per year compared to the traditional energy generation through the incineration of coal and gas. With the measures being implemented until 2015, we can increase the annual savings up to 130,000 metric tons of CO2.”

Whereas classic coal-fired power plants release 750,000 metric tons of CO2 into the air in the production of the same amount of energy, SkoEnergo’s modern facility was able to reduce CO2 emissions to 520,000 metric tons. Until 2015, emissions are to decrease to 390,000 metric tons.

In the first seven months of the year, the SKODA brand has delivered 523,200 vehicles worldwide (January – July 2010: 437,300 vehicles). Thus, the Czech automobile manufacturer was able to increase its sales 19.7 percent in comparison to the previous year and for the first time ever delivered more than 500,000 vehicles by July. At the same time, SKODA achieved a new record for the month of July with 68,500 sold units (last year: 58,500).

In its Czech home, SKODA grew better than the overall market, recording an increase of 9.6 percent. Overall, 4,400 vehicles were delivered to customers there.

The brand also recorded a clear plus in other countries of Central and Eastern Europe in July: In the Ukraine, sales rose 54.8 percent. Slovenia grew 9.3 percent, Poland 3.7 percent, and Croatia 4.0 percent.

“SKODA remains in the fast lane,” explained the SKODA board member for sales and marketing, Jurgen Stackmann. “Growth regions such as China, India, or even Russia developed brilliantly in July thanks to two-digit growth rates for the SKODA brand. And we are also continuously recording high sales numbers with our attractive model range in the established markets of Western and Eastern Europe.”

Sales figures in Western Europe also developed positively. With a plus of 24.0 percent, the Czech automobile manufacturer reached a sales volume of 27,200 units there. In this context, high rates of increase were reported by the Netherlands with a plus of 53.2 percent and Austria with a plus of 36.8 percent. On the German market, SKODA was able to increase its market share as the most popular import brand. In Belgium, sales rose 23.8 percent, in France it was 22.6 percent, and in Switzerland 13.2 percent.

The markets in China, India, and Russia grew at high speed. In China, SKODA deliveries increased 15.4 percent to 17,800 units in July. In Russia, SKODA achieved the third best monthly result with 6,100 deliveries and a plus of 22.7 percent. In India, SKODA has outpaced last year’s sales by 70.1 percent with 2,300 units sold to date. In doing so, about two thirds of Indian customers decided on the Fabia.

In other markets outside of Europe, SKODA reported good results as well. In Australia, the brand reached the second-best monthly sales record in July.

SKODA’s sponsorship of this year’s Tour de France has been a success. For the eighth consecutive year, the Czech-based carmaker was one of the main sponsors of the world’s toughest cycling race that ended today on the Champs Elysees in Paris. With a fleet of 300 vehicles and many events relating to the race, the brand’s involvement was more extensive than ever before. Furthermore, SKODA was a partner of nine professional teams plus the technical assistance team (Mavic). The climax of SKODA’s presence in the event was today’s handing of the TdF trophy to Tour winner Cadel Evans by SKODA Auto BOD Member for Sales and Marketing Jurgen Stackmann.

“We are proud to have supported this fantastic sports event for the eighth consecutive year,” stressed Stackmann. “These three weeks have really been fantastic in all respects. It has been one of the most thrilling races around France so far, and the riders put in top-class performances to show why this sport keeps fascinating people worldwide. For SKODA this Tour was again an excellent opportunity to be seen by billions of viewers. Our extensive involvement in this Tour has reinforced brand awareness and enhanced our image all over the world”.

Intended for use by the race management, VIP guests and media from all over the world, 300 vehicles across SKODA’s model portfolio have been provided to the Tour de France organizers, from the Fabia to the Suberb. Furthermore, SKODA was part of the “advertising caravan” and was also heavily involved in the final ceremony on the Champs Elysees: the trophy that was handed to this year’s Tour winner by Jürgen Stackmann had been designed by SKODA’s Chief Designer Jozef Kaban and his team and manually produced by Czech glassmakers.

Together with ice-hockey, cycling is one of the main pillars of SKODA’s sponsorship strategy. Besides the Tour, the brand is also involved in e.g. the Giro d’ Italia and acts as a partner of road cycling world championships. With the objective of popularizing cycling with cycling enthusiasts, SKODA supports various cycling events designed for the general public, such as the Bike for Life in the Czech Republic and the Berlin Velothon in Germany.

Freddy Loix claimed victory on the Intercontinental Rally Challenge qualifier in Ypres for a seventh time in his factory Skoda Fabia Super 2000. Loix was second fastest through the last stage to triumph by 1m41.6s over second-placed Bryan Bouffier in a Peugeot 207.

Hans Weijs secured third place in his Skoda Fabia S2000 with Michal Solowow overcoming a throttle problem to take fourth overall in his Ford Fiesta.

Jan Kopecky and his co-driver Petr Stary have been forced to withdraw their entry from the Ypres Rally. The Skoda Motorsport duo were among the favourites to win the asphalt event in their Fabia Super 2000 but suffered a crash during the pre-rally shakedown on Thursday evening. Although Kopecky was uninjured, Stary awoke in the night complaining of pains in his right collarbone.

Karel Pokorny, the press officer for Skoda Motorsport, said: “The pain was worse than yesterday on his right side and when Petr tried to sit in the car this morning with the seatbelt on there was no chance to breathe normally.”

Kopecky, who is currently second in the IRC drivers’ standings, said: “We had a good chance to be in a good position at the finish of the rally so the disappointment is huge. However, Petr’s health is the priority.”

It would have been indeed difficult to find a better place for the first victory in SWRC. The Red Bull SKODA team won the legendary Acropolis Rally, one of the most difficult events in the rallying calendar. The season’s fourth event saw Juho Hanninen win after putting in a brilliant performance – a combination of speed, patience and cool-headedness.

Although he was one of the fastest drivers right from the start, Hanninen was careful to avoid driving mistakes and technical problems which, together with failures on the part of some of his opponents, made it possible for him to set the pace. He was second until Stage 6, keeping the gap behind leader Tanak (Ford) reasonably small. He did not avoid minor problems, either (defects in Stage 1 and Stage 2 and a minor clash with a rock), but without any serious consequences, and when Tanak dropped out in Stage 7, he started increasing his lead to finish nearly five minutes ahead of Sousa (Ford) in the end.

After his first victory this season, Juho is in the overall lead of the championship: “It’s been a great weekend for our team, for me and Mikko, as well as the entire championship. It’s indeed been the most difficult Acropolis Rally in history, and I wish to thank all the guys in the team. We are going to the next event to Finland, my home country, as the championship leaders – it’s great!”

Hermann Gassner’s main ambition in Greece was to finish the rally, which he actually did. His performance curve is climbing, which is the most important thing in terms of his further development, and although he did not get to the podium (some of the reasons being a problem with transmission oil and a driving mistake causing him to make a 360), he was very happy, too: “It’s definitely been the most difficult rally we have ever taken part in. We had a few problems, so we are happy to have got to the finish. It was very difficult to find the optimum balance between driving fast and playing it safe, but we did a good job. If it hadn’t been for the problems we had, we could have had podium ambitions!”

Head of the team Raimund Baumschlager was thrilled to bits, too: “The whole team put in an excellent performance. We had everything under control and Juho has shown how brilliant he is on gravel. I also have to congratulate Hermann whose task here in Greece was to “survive” as many kilometers as possible. It’s been a great weekend for the whole team.”

The third event of the IRC championship offered a thrilling spectacle from the first kilometer to the last. For the first time in history, the series moved to Corsica to take the drivers to 321 kilometers of a narrow track and a mix of bends and difficult uphill and downhill stretches. Jan Kopecky & Petr Stary of Skoda Motorsport (factory team) had an impressive finish but, despite two fastest times on the final day, came second, 16 seconds behind Thierry Neuville in a Peugeot. Driving another Fabia Super 2000, Freddy Loix finished third and tops the IRC rankings. Kopecky shares second place.

Appearing in the IRC Championship calendar for the first time in history, the Corsica Rally got back to its roots in terms of program composition – three competition days, three service zones, tiring transfers for both the crews and their whole teams and the route scattered all over the island. On top of that, a mix of new asphalt, broken roads and stones fallen down from Corsica’s typical rocks indeed required maximum concentration and commitment from all team members.

The rally started on Thursday with the first 55 kilometers in the surroundings of Calvi. After Day 1, Neuville was top, nine seconds ahead of Kopecky, Andreas Mikkelsen of Skoda UK Motorsport was fourth and Freddy Loix of BFO Skoda Belgie fifth. On Day 2 the field of drivers moved inland to Corte to do six stages in total. However, one of them was cancelled in the end due to a forerunner’s accident, which affected the overall rhythm of the rally and the drivers’ performance, too. Neuville stayed top, 23 seconds ahead of Kopecky, Loix moved up to third place, a further four seconds behind Kopecky, Mikkelsen remained fourth.

The final part on Saturday took the drivers to Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica. Kopecky started very aggressively, knocked nine seconds off Neuville’s lead in the first stage and kept reducing the gap in the following stages. An excellent set-up of Kopecky’s car and his brilliant performance earned him the runner-up position in the end, Loix (supported by the factory team) came third. After a tyre puncture in Stage 12, Mikkelsen of Skoda UK Motorsport finished sixth overall.

Commenting on this highly challenging rally, Head of Skoda Motorsport Michal Hrabanek says: “It’s been a great rally, extremely difficult in terms of logistics but thrilling till the last kilometer. Our second and third places are certainly a good contribution towards the overall championship result. Freddy Loix has fought his way up to the top of IRC, which motivates us to carry on working hard. IRC is still a thrilling spectacle, with fierce battles for every second. Now we are going to prepare for the Ukraine Rally. Taking place in the Ukraine for the first time in history, this rally will certainly be a big motivation for all the drivers.”

Jan Kopecky:

“We wanted to win, of course, but the rally was long and difficult and we did not know the local roads really well. We did not perform at our best over the first two days, but we found the right rhythm on the last day. Two second places in a row are not bad, and the championship is nowhere near its end.”

Freddy Loix:

“We kept looking for the right rhythm all over this rally, but the guys ahead of us were simply better this time. Leading the overall championship rankings is fine, but it also makes us even more committed to working really hard in the rallies to come.”

The IRC series continues with a rally to take place in the surroundings of Jalta, Ukraine on the first weekend of June. The line-up of Skoda Motorsport will be specified within a few days.

It was exactly 85 years ago, that a vehicle with the SKODA logo of the winged arrow rolled off the assembly line for the first time. The luxury sedan SKODA Hispano Suiza was the first car with the distinctive trademark of the Czech manufacturer. On May 10th, 1926, the very first vehicle was delivered to the president of Czechoslovakia, TomaS Garrigue Masaryk. Until 1929, only a total of 100 units of the luxury sedan were built.

The industrial manufacturer from Pilsen had already bought the license for the production of luxury sedans from the originally Spanish company Hispano-Suiza in 1924 – i.e. even before the merger with the automobile factory of Laurin & Klement. That explains the additional name in the vehicle designation. In the spring of 1925, production of the vehicle was started; in May of 1926, the first vehicle was finished. The design had been created by the leading coachbuilders at the time, Messrs. Brozik & Jech, and later by Messrs. Laurin & Klement as well.

The manufacture was still far away from today’s series production. Every single SKODA Hispano Suiza 25/100 PS was custom-built in individual production according to the customer’s wishes. Therefore, each car was unique. Depending on the equipment, the vehicle weighed up to 2,700 kilograms. It was able to reach a top speed of 140 km/h.

Among other people, customers and owners included the prime minister at the time, Antonin Svehla, as well as important industrial leaders and aristocrats of Czechoslovakia and foreign buyers. The luxury equipment corresponded to the price level set for the SKODA Hispano Suiza. The base price started at 190,000 crowns and was several times higher than the price of other vehicles available on the market. Depending on the equipment, the price could rise to a quarter of a million crowns. The office of the president even paid 280,000 crowns for the first model. In comparison, the small SKODA 422 cost 38,000 crowns, the large sedan SKODA 860 about 120,000 crowns.

The accompanying information by the manufacturer stated: “The SKODA Hispano Suiza is a luxury car designed by a brilliant engineer who put his stamp on the smallest details and manufactured with the utmost care and fine materials.”

Both Skoda Motorsport factory crews will appear at the second event of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge to take place in the Canary Islands from 14-16 April. Furthermore, the field will include two Fabia Super 2000s supported by importers – Skoda Belgium and Skoda UK. Skoda took the first three places in this race last year.

Both of the factory drivers, Juho Hanninen and Jan Kopecky, are optimistic about the rally. Kopecky says: “I am certainly looking forward to this rally, as we celebrated victory in the Canary Islands last year and this year our goal is ambitious as well. However, the competition is going to be even tougher than last year. The field will surely include a number of excellent drivers, but that is exactly what makes rallying and the IRC championship so exciting”.

Juho Hanninen, the reigning IRC champion and the runner-up in the Canary Islands last year, adds: “My last year’s second place was fantastic. I have definitely made some progress on asphalt ever since; I feel increasingly comfortable on this surface and although I am mainly concentrating on S-WRC this year, I see this event as a pleasant extra and an excellent opportunity to continue improving. I have the best possible memories of IRC.”

TheRally Islas Canarias El Corte Ingles will also see two Fabia Super 2000s supported by Skoda importers – Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Floene (Skoda UK Motorsport) and Freddy Loix/Frédéric Miclotte (BFO Skoda) and. The rally comprises 12 stages (190 kilometers) in hilly terrain that will test the drivers’ technical skills on asphalt renowned for its high levels of grip.

After initial difficulties: Juho Hanninen / Mikko Markkula (FIN), Skoda Fabia S2000, finish third in the S-WRC as the best of the Skoda teams in Mexico, ninth in the overall classification.

The season opener in Mexico unfortunately did not end with the hoped-for top result for the newly formed Team Red Bull Skoda. The reigning Finnish IRC champions Juho Hanninen/Mikko Markkula finished third in the S-WRC with their Skoda Fabia S2000, taking a top ten result in the overall classification.

As expected the 2011 Rally Mexico became a battle of materiel – and the teams’ physical limit of performance was reached several times as well, not just because of the enormous elevation above sea level.

Hanninen/Markkula had the worst conceivable start to the first WRC test of the year. Above all the second of a total of 22 special stages round Leon passed off more than unfortunately. First the two Finns made the unpleasant acquaintance of a wall, whereupon quite a lot had to be replaced on the Skoda. Furthermore the reverse gear failed – trivial pushing was on the agenda.

With that the initial euphoria was somewhat curbed, nevertheless Hanninen still set two best times in the S-WRC.

On the second day the two Red Bull drivers were driving as if unleashed and to a great extent without problems. With a total of a further four fastest times Hanninen/Markkula halved the deficit to S-WRC leader Al-Attiyah to one minute.
P3 in the S-WRC as well as a remarkable ninth place in the overall classification were the reward for a continuous race to catch up by the two Finns on the second day.

Three more stages and just under sixty competitive kilometres were left to be run on today’s third and final day. Hanninen started the final day with his seventh fastest stage time, making up seven seconds over Prokop and 15 seconds over Al-Attiyah.

The Finn is 22 seconds short of P2 and Martin Prokop (CZE).

The race to catch up was then brought to an end on the penultimate stage – Hanninen lost a minute, the reason: a roll and the resultant tyre damage.

Victory in the S-WRC in Mexico eventually went to the 2011 Paris – Dakar winner, Nasser Al-Attiyah from Qatar, another Red Bull athlete in the sport of rallying.

Third place went to Hanninen/Markkula: The Red Bull Skoda Fabia S2000 had once more been perfectly prepared by the Austrian BRR team – and in the end Hanninen/Markkula were able to be satisfied with their debut: Best Skoda team, eight fastest special stage times and important championship points in Mexico.

The two IRC champions Hanninen/Markkula (FIN) will yet be complemented this year by another Red Bull team: The German rally champions of 2009, Gassner jun./Wüstenhagen, will likewise head into the 2011 S-WRC season with great ambitions – starting with the Jordan Rally, April 14th – 16th, 2011.
