Rinaldo Capello turned in the best time in Saturday morning’s warm-up session for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and the opening round of the 2007 American Le Mans Series season. The Italian, a defending Series champion and race winner, turned in a time of 1:48.357 on his final flying lap in his Audi R10 TDI.
Capello, Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen are looking for their second straight Sebring win in the Audi. At the end of each on-track session this week, Audi has held the top spot.
Dario Franchitti was second overall and first in LMP2 for Acura and Andretti Green Racing. The Scot, making his first Series start, was 0.258 seconds off Capello’s pace at 1:48.615 and offered a scintillating preview of today’s 12-hour classic. Emmanuel Collard was second in class and third overall for Penske Racing and its Porsche RS Spyder at 1:50.428.
Jan Magnussen led GT1 in his Corvette Racing Corvette C6.R at 2:00.976 on his final lap to take class honors. Antonio Garcia was second for Team Modena and its Aston Martin DBR9, just 0.03 seconds behind Magnussen.
In GT2, Ferrari held the top three spots. Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing’s Tim Bergmeister led the pack at 2:05.215. He has 0.268 seconds ahead of Jaime Melo for Risi Competizione and a full second in front of Maurizio Mediani for Corsa Motorsports/White Lightning Racing.
