Red Bull Rally Team – 1.5 seconds short of the win! Close, but no cigar – Patrik Sandell loses a last-second thriller on the final stage!

Cruel luck! The Red Bull Rally Team missed its third win of the season in the Production Car World Rally Championship by 1.5 second!

Patrik Sandell/Emil Axelsson (SWE) – Skoda Fabia S2000 – had a great performance in the ‘Rally d’Italia Sardegna’, leading for ten special stages while also setting five fastest stage times – and still it was not enough for the win! What an incredibly exciting final day with an enthraling duel!

PWRC: Team Red Bull Rally crashes out of the Vodafone Rally de Portugal

As was to be feared, Patrik Sandell’s high-speed crash this morning has decisive negative repercussions: Both the Skoda Fabia S2000’s car body and its engine are badly damaged. Thus BRR’s decision was rather obvious – resuming the event under SupeRally regulations was out of the question. This year’s Rally Portugal is hence already history for the Red Bull Rally Team!

PWRC: Sandell/Axelsson and the Skoda Fabia S2000 win at Cyprus

The Red Bull Rally Team is leading the overall PWRC classification with the maximum of points after two events!

PWRC: Sandell/Axelsson and the Skoda Fabia S2000 win at Cyprus

Patrik Sandell/Emil Axelsson (SWE) – Skoda Fabia S2000 – won the Cyprus Rally today, hence taking their second win in a row after also being victorious in Norway!

For two days the Swede was trailing Armindo Araujo in second place, but on today’s final leg he managed to turn the tables. The penultimate 40 kilometre stage brought the decision when Sandell set a fantastic fastest time, 34 seconds quicker than the leader up to that point, although it has to be mentioned in the Portuguese’s defence that he was struggling with gearbox troubles.

Patrik Sandell caught up massively today, running second after 11 special stages, just 16.5 seconds behind Araujo!

Everything suggests a very close thriller on the final day! And now, more than ever, the Red Bull Rally Team is firmly in the hunt for the win in the PWRC classification of the Cyprus Rally!

Patrik Sandell in second position after six stages – and within striking distance to surprise leader Araujo!

Happy faces in the Red Bull Rally Team and around the Upper Austrian BRR crew of team boss Raimund Baumschlager after the opening day of the Cyprus Rally, the second round of the 2009 Production Car World Rally Championship:

Patrik Sandell/Emil Axelsson (SWE) – Skoda Fabia S2000 – have shown a very solid performance on the first six stages – with one fastest time and five second places – and are currently second in the PWRC classification after the first day – 33.2 seconds behind the surprise leader Armindo Araujo from Portugal!
