Reigning champion and current series leader Joe Fulbrook is in a race against time to ready his car for this weekend’s (18/19 July) rounds of the Volkswagen Racing Cup in association with Hankook.
Joe’s Bora was damaged just over a week ago, at Snetterton, and his RP Motorsport team mates are flat out to repair the Warranty Direct Bora in time.
‘The car was not as badly damaged as we thought,’ said Joe. ‘The impact was not heavy and the result was mainly cosmetic. It’s a lot of work to get it back in shape, though, and it will be touch and go as to whether we make it.’
After leading the championship all season Fulbrook has seen his advantage cut to just eight points with six races remaining.
Fulbrook will have a team-mate at Donington in the shape of former Caddy van racer Giles Lock, who returns to the championship at the wheel of a Beetle RSI. Also planning on a return is Alex Dziuzynski, brother of championship front-runner Didge, who will race the West End Precision Corrado in which he scored a race victory last season at Donington.
A car with some interesting Racing Cup history will be making a comeback also. It’s the Mk IV Golf GTI in which Craig Inskip took his famous ‘backwards win’ at Donington in 2005, spinning across the finishing line rear wheels first after a final-corner incident. Inskip’s Golf will be in the hands of new owner Dan Crossley. Dan’s father-in-law, Steve Walker, will race a similar car at the weekend.
Meanwhile, Kieran Griffin is taking over the wheel of the Addison Lee Motorsport Scirocco GT in place of his holidaying brother, Liam. Another of last year’s Donington race victors, Mike Kurton, will be in another Scirocco.
The Volkswagen Racing Cup in association with Hankook enjoys additional support from Augustus Martin, Ceva Logistics, ECM Vehicle Delivery, Milltek Sport, Mondial Assistance, KW Automotive, Superchips, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Volkswagen Financial Services UK.
