Races to air on Speed-TV beginning December 6

The 2009 SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series produced many exciting moments, culminating with Timmy Megenbier’s Championship win. Beginning December 6, race broadcasts of the country’s only professional clean diesel racing series will begin airing on Speed-TV.

During the season, the series contested 10 races on eight circuits across North America. The 2009 campaign began with a double-race weekend at VIRginia International Raceway where two series rookies took home wins and concluded with a thrilling rain-drenched finish at Road Atlanta where local driver Mark Pombo won his final race in the series. The broadcast schedule for the first seven races of the season has been announced, and the final dates will be released at a later date. Each of the races will air in an edited 30-minute broadcast. Check local cable listings for channel information and www.speedtv.com for broadcast schedule updates.

Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup TV Broadcast Schedule* (all times Eastern):

• December 6, 5 pm – VIRginia International Raceway – Race #1
• December 6, 5:30 pm – VIRginia International Raceway – Race #2
• December 6, 6 pm – Miller Motorsports Park – Race #3
• December 6, 6:30 pm – Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course – Race #4
• December 13, 5 pm – Autobahn Country Club – Race #5
• December 13, 5:30 pm – Road America – Race #6
• December 20, 5:30 pm – Mosport International Raceway – Race #7

* Additional broadcasts dates will be announced at a later date.

In addition to the race broadcasts, the series also expects to announce the broadcast schedule for its season documentary, ‘Racing Under Green,’ in the coming weeks. The 60-minute documentary will air on an array of Discovery Channel outlets and takes an inside look at the series to capture the personalities behind the wheel of the equally-prepared Jetta TDI Cup racecars. Exact broadcast dates and times will be announced at a later date.

Volkswagen is currently accepting driver applications for the 2010 season at www.vwmotorsportusa.com. Potential driver candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 26 as of January 1, 2010 and hold a passport from the U.S., Canada or Mexico. In addition, drivers entering the series for the first time must not have competed in any professional racing series regardless of location. Applicants must submit their application along with a season entry fee of $45,000 by December 11, 2009 in order to be considered as a candidate. The entry fee will be fully refunded to those not chosen as a 2010 series driver.

From the driver applications, up to 125 candidates will be selected to attend the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup final driver selection event that will be held February 7-9 in Las Vegas. This final event will determine the final 25-driver lineup for the 2010 season. The final driver selection event includes three days of professional driving instruction, autocross competition, track time in a Jetta TDI Cup car, physical fitness training, a sponsorship development workshop, marketing and media training, and Volkswagen brand familiarization.

SPEEDtv.com is set to raise the bar for online coverage of the American Le Mans Series this weekend with a one-hour live video stream of qualifying from the daunting 2.459-mile Mosport International Raceway just outside of Toronto, Canada. Done in partnership with the American Le Mans Series and American Le Mans Radio /Radio Le Mans, fans of the Series will get the chance to watch live qualifying as it happens with the expert commentary of John Hindhaugh and Jeremy Shaw.

“Qualifying in the American Le Mans Series is almost a second event – like a special feature during each round,” Hindhaugh said. “Races are almost three hours long, and some people might think that the drivers take it easy during the qualifying session. But as we’ve seen all year, the GT and the prototype cars leave no margin of error whatsoever while chasing pole position.”

With round after round of last-ditch qualifying battles, Hindhaugh expects the same at Mosport. “Pole position usually goes right down to the last lap – the final seconds of the session. The man on top of the time sheets when the checkered flag waves isn’t always the polesitter; we’ve seen more than once this year where another car a few corners behind comes through and steals pole right out from under him. It’s brilliant stuff.”

After calling almost every session ever held in the 10-year history of the American Le Mans Series, Hindhaugh is uniquely placed to speak on the first live video of qualifying to be aired on SPEEDtv.com. “I hope people tune in and get their friends to watch one of the most amazing experiences in sports car racing. We’re in the booth shouting until our voices give out because of the excitement, so to now marry the sounds of American Le Mans Radio with SPEED’s streaming video online is just perfect. I can only hope this becomes a regular feature.”

Presented by Acura, qualifying at the rolling Mosport track is expected to feature the cars of Acura, Aston Martin, Audi, Corvette, Dodge, Ferrari, Ford, Mazda, Panoz and Porsche as they all vie for pole position in the unique four-class sports car racing series.

The Mobil 1 presents the Grand Prix of Mosport is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 24 from Mosport International Raceway just outside of Toronto. The eighth round of the 2008 American Le Mans Series will be aired live on SPEED. XM Satellite Radio will air the race live on XM Channel 166. Live radio coverage also will be available from American Le Mans Radio at americanlemans.com, which also will feature IMSA’s Live Timing & Scoring.

Great looking entry from Tiger Racing! We’re not big fans of K&N filters around here but we are fans of a K&N branded Porsche! Ha!

With Sebring less than a week away, Tiger Racing”s Paul Brown has been brought in to pilot the No. 96 K&N Engineering Porsche 911 GT3 for the season opener.

Paul is no stranger to the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT series with 44 starts in his career including 19 top-10s and 5 top-five finishes. He took a career-high finish of second at the 1999 Vancouver street race after leading the first half and suffering from a broken transmission. Brown’s experience and demonstrated ability attracted K&N Engineering to the program and the No. 96 Porsche will carry K&N’s signature colors at Sebring.

“I am very excited about returning to World Challenge,” Brown said. “This is where I cut my teeth in road racing, so it’s like coming home.”

Brown’s only previous start at Sebring came in 2001 as a last minute substitute for an injured driver. Brown literally jumped into a Corvette as it rolled onto the track for the presentation lap. With no practice, and having never driven the 3.7-mile track before, Brown managed to charge from 31st to a 15th-place finish.

The new Porsche will be prepped by 911 Design out of Montclair, Calif., where Brown will be teammates with Eric Olberz, who returns for his third year in World Challenge driving the No. 29 Sport Chalet Porsche.

“The guys at 911 Design have been great to work with and have been focused on bringing me up to speed on the GT3,” Brown said. “With the automotive powerhouses of K&N Filters and Eibach Springs behind us and the technical support of ERP Suspension Engineering, this could be a very exciting year.”

“I’ve known Paul for years and he is nothing short of 100 percent focused on driving and being great at it,” Sports Marketing Director for K&N Charles Maier said. “He is a man of integrity in business and simply does what he says he will. When this opportunity came to partner up with Paul, I knew that he would be a good ambassador for K&N in an area of motorsport that we have not been so active in as of late. I personally love road racing and feel that we, as a company, need to continue to mine out solid relationships in this category of motorsports. We wish Paul and Tiger Racing all the best at the season opener, Sebring!”

We’ve been putting together calendars from all racing series that we watch and repot on. This will include the American Le Mans Series, DTM, WTCC, BTCC, Le Mans, FIA GT, Speed World Challenge, Volkswagen Racing Cup, Volkswagen Polo Cup, Formula 3 Euro Series, Grand Am and more. Dakar was in but…

There are some good solutions out there but in the end we came back to Google Calendar. We will also set direct links up to the iCal (.ics) file. Here is a list of apps that support iCal format. In the end Google is web based and you can have access to it from wherever.

I was very disappointed to see that Speed has pulled German Touring Car, BTCC and WTCC off the Program Schedule list. We checked the forums and other avenues but no luck. Since [insert racing series name here] has taken over all of SpeedTV, we figured all non domestic racing was going to be on in the early hours or not at all.

Do we have good news for you! The schedule is up and it starts this weekend. Set your TiVo’s, cancel your torrent downloads, grab your Audi shirt and get ready!

We set up a new calendar on markthisdate. It provides numerous calendar options from iCal, Google, Palm, Outlook and a ton more. You shouldn’t have a problem adding to your calendar of choice.

MONTEREY, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2007) – Chip Herr, of Lititz, Pa., topped the time sheets in morning practice for Round Ten of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship. Peter Cunningham, of Grafton, Wis., and Brandon Davis, of Denver, Colo., were second and third fastest, respectively, at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Herr hit the top of the timing monitors early and continued to whittle down his time throughout the 20-minute practice session. By the end, a 1:35.929 was the (83.987 mph) was good enough to keep the No. 17 STaSIS/Clear Capital/Nalley Audi A4 on top.

“We made some really great changes,” Herr said. “We put a stiffer bar on the car that we’ve never used before. Yesterday, I tested it and today I think we proved it”s going to work for qualifying at least.

“We haven’t historically done well here. I finished fifth here last year and I qualified 10th. I don’t know if I’ll be able to pass a bunch of cars again on the start like I did last year. There’s a lot of people here battling for Championships so it’s going to be tough. I don’t want to be in the midst of it, but I’m going to be there.”

Four-time World Challenge Champion Cunningham ended the session second fastest in his No. 42 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Racing Acura TSX. The winningest driver in series history entered a time of 1:36.450 (83.533 mph). Teammate Davis in the No. 43 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Racing Acura TSX completed the top three with a time of 1:36.478 (83.509 mph).

Currently second in the Drivers’ Champion, Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, Ga., was fourth on the time sheets, turning a 1:36.538 (83.457 mph) in his No. 73 MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development MAZDA6. Defending SCCA SPEED Touring Car Champion Pierre Kleinubing, of Coconut Creek, Fla., made it three Acuras in the top five, clocking a 1:36.804 (83.228 mph) in his No. 1 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/Real Time Racing Acura TSX.

Driving last year’s race-winning car, Kuno Wittmer (Acura RSX) was sixth, followed by Ian Baas (Audi A4), Nick Esayian (Acura TSX), Jeff Altenburg (MAZDA6) and Charles Espenlaub (MAZDA6).

The second SCCA SPEED Touring Car practice session is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. (PDT).

Man that sessions was awesome! Adam Pecorari takes pole with Chip Herr in second and Ian Bass in third. Only four cars broke the 1:40 mark and if I’m not mistaken Galati (ex Champion Audi) is in an AWD Volvo still.. I need to look at the forcast for tomorrow but if it’s wet look for the 1-2-3 to remain!

Well after I reported on the qualification yesterday, the second placed Acura failed post race inspection moving Ian into 2nd and Chip into 3rd on grid. That’s just one step closer to podium’s today.

Sunday’s SPEED World Challenge round 6 at the Grand Prix of Toronto takes place at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time July 8th. The race will be aired on SPEED Saturday, July 14th at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

Toronto, Ontario (July 7, 2007) Ian Baas had his best showing of the year qualifying 2nd in his #18 PFAFF/STaSIS/Clear Capital/Audi A4 at the Grand Prix of Toronto with a time of 1:20.842. Teammate Chip Herr was only 4 thousandths of a second behind in 3rd in his #17 PFAFF/STaSIS/Clear Capital/Audi A4 with a time of 1:20.846. Herr was quick early holding the 3rd fastest time with Baas in 7th position. With Herr in the pits conserving his tires for race day Baas kept working and improved to 3rd moving Herr to 4th. After qualifying the 2nd qualifier failed post race inspection moving Baas and Herr to 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Commenting on the qualifying Baas said, “I’m looking forward to starting on the front row tomorrow. Ideally I can get a good start and be fighting for a podium the whole race.”

Herr was understandably pleased to have company near the front. Herr commented, “Hopefully Ian and I can work together and get both cars on the podium.”
