Successful bio natural gas demonstration with the Cup-Scirocco R

An eco-conscious vehicle, a small comeback and a convincing performance: the Cup-Scirocco R demonstrated climate-friendly motorsport “powered by bio natural gas” as the course-opening car at the Germany Rally.

The car that was modified for rally requirements and that normally stands for gripping circuit racing action was piloted by WRC returnee Carlos Sainz (Spain) and Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar) – the winner and the runner-up of the past Dakar Rally with Volkswagen. In the passenger’s seat they were navigated by their respective “Dakar” co-drivers: Lucas Cruz (Spain) and Timo Gottschalk (Germany). Thanks to the use of pure bio natural gas as fuel the Cup Scirocco emits 80 per cent less CO2. The version of the 2-litre engine used for the Germany Rally delivered 275 hp.

Skoda Auto’s factory team Skoda Motorsport is going to appear with three crews at the Monte Carlo Rally in January, the first event of the 2010 season of Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC).

The team’s two long-standing crews, Hänninen – Markkula and Kopecký – Starý, are going to be joined by Frenchman Nicolas Vouilloz, the 2008 IRC champion. Vouilloz is going to choose his co-driver within a few days.

Commenting on Vouilloz’s involvement, Head of Skoda Motorsport Michal Hrabánek says: ‘The Monte Carlo Rally is an extremely challenging event and we see it as one of the most important races of the upcoming season. The 2009 Monte Carlo event successfully started off our new project Fabia Super2000 and then the whole 2009 season was a success for our crews and a great motivation for the entire team to work hard also in the future. We put in a very good performance in Monte Carlo last year and we want to be at least equally successful in 2010.

Nicolas Vouilloz is a top-class driver and his IRC track record is really impressive, and so we are really pleased that he is going to join our team for this challenging event. I am sure that his participation will substantially increase Skoda Motorsport’s chance to succeed and also believe that it will support our marketing efforts in France, because France is one of our target markets as far as Fabia Super2000 is concerned and one of Skoda’s key markets in general. Looking for opportunities of using top-class motorsport projects as a brand development tool is part of our cooperation with the importer of Skoda in France.’”

From high-tech nomads for high-tech nomads: Volkswagen has launched a new iPhone application about the Dakar Rally in Apple’s online store today.

Under the name of ‘Volkswagen Rally mobile – 2010 Dakar’ the application is now available free of charge. Before and during the ‘Dakar’ it sends news, results, videos and background information directly to the user’s display. iPhone users will be kept up to speed about the ‘Dakar’ programme of the five factory-prepared and factory-fielded Race Touareg vehicles from Volkswagen, receiving exciting insights into the rally world of Volkswagen Motorsport. The Wolfsburg-based automobile manufacturer will contest the off-road classic that leads through Argentina and Chile – running twice across the Andes as well as through the gruelling Atacama desert and the legendary pampas – from 02 to 16 January 2010 as the title defender.

 
‘Volkswagen has always stood for innovations in motorsport,’ says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. ‘At the last Dakar Rally we were the first automobile manufacturer to win the event with diesel power. The Scirocco Cup that launches in 2010 will be the world’s first one-make cup to use eco-conscious Bio-CNG (bio-compressed natural gas). The iPhone application for the ‘Dakar’ is unique in the world of rally racing to date as well and offers users of the cult mobile the chance to stay informed about current ‘Dakar’ events around the clock.’

In addition to news such as daily reports and quotes from the bivouac, the iPhone application includes multi-media contents and interactive features. ‘Rally mobile’ provides daily video summaries of the stages that last about three minutes, sound bites from the Volkswagen factory pairings via sound files and fascinating photographs. A wealth of background information complements the selection: besides receiving an interactive overview of the Race Touareg 2 and its features, iPhone users will have access to detailed stage information and maps of the ‘Dakar’. In addition, they are provided with interesting facts about Carlos Sainz, Giniel de Villiers and company – thanks to extensive biographical information supplied about the drivers and co-drivers. ‘Rally mobile’ is always up to speed: the latest results such as daily classifications and overall standings of the ‘Dakar’ and all other contents will be immediately available after the end of the stages.

Like precision clockwork: Volkswagen logistics at the “Dakar”

Organization is half the battle – this maxim is particularly true in cross-country rally racing. From transporting people and equipment to the venue and throughout the rally, to organizing the service locations, all the way to smooth spare parts supply – planning with clock-work-like precision is one of the success factors at the Dakar Rally. About 80 team members and 23 service vehicles ensure that the five factory-fielded and factory-prepared Race Touareg vehicles receive efficient service day by day throughout the 15-day desert classic.

Extreme athletes on four wheels: the Race Touareg

The evolution of a winner: When the Dakar Rally kicks off on 01 January 2010 with the ceremonial start in Buenos Aires the Volkswagen Race Touareg 2 will move across the starting ramp with detailed improvements. Last year’s winning vehicle has been designed to master any type of terrain at racing speed: The world’s hottest desert? – Awe-inspiring altitudes at two crossings of the Andes? High-speed stretches across gravel? To tackle these challenges, the engineers from Volkswagen subjected the roughly 300-hp “Dakar” prototype with a TDI diesel power-plant to continuous further development. “Expect the unexpected” is one of the “Dakar’s” principles. The Race Touareg is ready to accomplish this feat.

Four-Times Monte Carlo Winner dominates European Championship Race

Walter Röhrl has won the race for the FIA European Rally Championship for Historical Cars in the Spanish town of Lloret de Mar last weekend. Teaming up with co-pilot Peter Göbel, German Rally Champion in 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2006, the two-times World Rally Champion drove a 1981 Porsche 911 RSR to victory. With their re-built and perfectly prepared rally version of the 911, Röhrl/Göbel immediately moved up to the top group in the race, together with ex-Renault works driver Jean Ragnotti in an Alpine A110, Historical European Championship specialist Michael Stoschek, Valter Jensen and Toto Riolo, all driving a Porsche 911, and three Group 4 Lancia Stratos. Under very difficult weather and track conditions, Röhrl clearly demonstrated his unique driving skills as the four-times Monte Carlo winner on the last two stages of the race, bringing home an historical victory for Wolfgang Reile’s Classic Power Team in the very special style of the truly outstanding driver who also won the European Rally Championship in 1974.

The BP Volkswagen Rally Team celebrated its fifth consecutive national rally title in South Africa.

At the season finale of the South African Rally Championship Hergen Fekken and Pierre Arries drove a Volkswagen Polo across the twelve special stages in Gauteng in about 1h 48m. Enzo Kuun/Guy Hodgson and Jan Habig/Douglas Judd – two other driver pairings of the BP Volkswagen Rally Team – finished in second and third place, respectively.

With a great success of the S?koda Fabia Super 2000 crews ended the 36th Rally Bohemia, when they have taken all the first three positions of the winner stand. The Finnish duo Juho Ha?nninen – Mikko Markkula rejoice from the first position.

Since the year 1995 we are witnessing again the Rally Bohemia winning by an abroad competing crew. Then the Italian Enrico Bertone had rejoiced the victory. This year, after the winning 3 out of 5 special stages, the crew from S?koda Motorsport Team Juho Ha?nninen with his co-driver Mikka Markkula have fought out the first place. Also the other two positions are taken by S?koda Fabia Super 2000. Jan Kopecky? – Petr Stary?, Ha?nninen’s team colleges ended up the second and Norwegians Andreas Mikkelsen – Ola Floene took the third place.

The last time, when we were witnessing the S?koda brand ruling the winner stand, was in the year 2001. Then Roman Kresta had won, Emil Triner the second and Bruno Thiry the third. All of them were driving S?koda Octavia WRC.

A great achievement on the track was given by Va?clav Pech and Petr Uhel on the fouth position, the fastest duo in the class N car. But even that wasn’t enough for gaining the title, for which they have been fighting for on the 36th Rally Bohemia.

The absolute rally champions of the Czech Republic have become Roman Kresta and Petr Gross, who even with a small hesitation in today’s initial special stage defended the same success from the last year.
