Volkswagen, celebrating the Jetta TDI CUP racing program, released a TDI Cup street car at the 2008 SEMA Show. The concept had red brakes, bitchin’ 10-spoke wheels, antiroll bars sport suspension and a racy body kit.

And now the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Edition is here and it’s got red brakes, a racy body kit, 10-spoke wheels and a sport suspension. The TDI Cup Edition has 140-horsepower from a 2.0-liter diesel motor, a six-speed manual transmission and a whopping 236 lb-feet of torque.

Acceleration Comments: Pretty quick to 30 mph, but power falls off pretty quickly, too. A little bit of wiggle / tug from the steering wheel at WOT, but nothing I’d call torque steer. Smooth, long-throw shifter we’ve grown to expect from VW.

Braking Comments: Brakes are average for this class of car, and don’t seem upgraded one bit for this “cup” designation. Fade resistance is average, too. Straight stops, all.

Handling Comments: Skid pad: Non-defeat ESC first breathes throttle, then uses brakes. light steering loads only slightly and doesn’t offer much feel. Slalom: again, not sure where the “cup” part comes in, but this Jetta feels as rubbery and flaccid as any other. Non-defeat ESC prefers smooth inputs, but I’m not convinced there would be much to gain by shutting it off. Lots of wind-up and roll.

Susperstitions are just that! Third time wasn’t a charm.

The past two seasons of Jetta TDI Cup have resulted in a rained-out weekend for New Jersey Motorsport Park. They had also concluded with somehow-someway, my car being put into the wall. We as racers have our own sort-of “racing religion”. No green paint on cars, don’t bring peanuts to the track, stepping on spiders makes it rain. These superstitions are interesting, how did they come to be? Third times a charm right? Well thankfully not! Otherwise I would have smoked the wall, again. That being said, I wouldn’t have minded the rain, these Jetta’s handle amazingly well in the rain and are very fun to pilot. Perhaps I should have stepped on a spider?

I felt pressured, pressured to stay off the wall. I wanted to break the “curse”. Third times the charm, you know? I kept myself reserved. I found myself backpedaling. I knew that I was going slow in my sweet spot, but I was haunted by memories. I qualified 15th. About one second off pole position. Could have been worse, tight field. It was a decent compromise. How so? I kept my mental stability in check, didn’t hit the wall and improved myself from last year. Yeah, I had more in me this year but I didn’t go balls to the wall in fear of it becoming more than a pun.

I took my third NJMP weekend in strides. In fact, we all did. We had a surprise fitness test. Each of us had to jog about four and a half miles and when we got back to the track we did about 45 minutes of strength and cardio training. Volkswagen is big on proper health and nutrition. This year, they have us on personalized physical training and nutritional schedules setup by Athletes Performance.

Anyhow,about the race. I was punked at the start. Everyone funneled into the inside lane going into turn one. Couldn’t make a safe move. It was a very dicey first lap. A lot of shoving around and wild moves took place throughout the race. I had a near run in with a new guy, he had forced me off the track while I was making a pass. I overtook him on the outside of the corner, on the grass with nowhere else to go. He managed to fold in my mirror, it was that close. The pass stuck, great for TV. I brought my ViON, TrackMart, LevelTronic, Can-Alignment Motorsports, YNotSportShots, Inside Track News, Keizer Racing Wheels, and Malone Tuning Volkswagen – Jetta TDI to a 9th place finish. I must thank my supporters for their enormous help and encouragement throughout the season.

Two-Time X-Games Gold Medal Winner Will Try His Hand at Motorsports

Volkswagen of America, Inc. has announced that 2008 & 2009 X-Games Skateboard Park gold medal winner, Rune Glifberg, will be joining the field this weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park to compete in Round Three of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup season on Sunday, May 9.

While he has spent the majority of his life on four wheels, this weekend’s event will provide yet another challenge for the Danish skateboarder; as this time, those four wheels will be under a Jetta TDI Cup car. Glifberg has extensive driving experience that he’s gained through participation in several driving schools, but Sunday will mark the first time he’s competed in an auto race.

“I’m really looking forward to this weekend’s Jetta TDI Cup event,” said Glifberg. “I’ve heard some great things about the Series and I’m excited to be able to participate in one of their races. I’ve had a decent bit of track time and I’m definitely a car enthusiast, but Sunday will be a brand new experience for me. Hopefully, I’ll be able to learn enough about the car during practice and qualifying, so I can go out there and give the other drivers a run for their money.”

Glifberg will participate in not only Sunday’s Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup race, but he’ll also take part in all on and off-track events, including practice and qualifying. While he’ll be a full participant, he will be ineligible for points or prize money. Full-time Series participants will move up the final race results accordingly.
 
About Glifberg:
Having been born in Copenhagen, Denmark in the 1970’s, being a professional skateboarder was probably one of the least likely career paths for Rune Glifberg. After he started skating at eleven, that probability soon turned into a reality. Being naturally talented, Rune went on to win first place at the Slam City Jam ten years later.

Anyone who’s seen Rune’s full-on assault on any and all things transition can tell you that he’s one of the most aggressive and stylish people to ever skate. On anything from tiny mini-ramps to tight-trannied pools to half pipes, Rune straight up kills it. Combine that with his sense of humor and easy-going personality and you get one of the most loved skateboarders of our time.

When not competing, Rune routinely sessions backyard pools and skateparks with Mike Crum and Jake Brown. Rune also is vocal and active in the independence rights of Christiania, a self-governed town in his home country of Denmark. Sales from Rune’s “Forsvar” Etnies shoe benefitted the community.

Today, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Series began its 2010 season in exciting fashion at the Virginia International Raceway (VIR). The weather was picture-perfect and the young drivers provided a thrilling and competitive race. While the rookie drivers put on a strong showing, it was veteran Ryan Ellis, who took the checkered flag in the #6 Washington Capitals car.

The Ashburn, Virginia native held off fellow driver, Juan Pablo Sierra Lendle of Puebla, Mexico, for the coveted first win of the Jetta TDI Cup season. Lendle finished second, but was neck and neck with Ellis throughout the race. Series veteran A.J. Nealey rounded out the podium with his third-place finish.

“This is the best day of my racing career. The weather was ideal for racing and my car ran perfectly today,” said Ellis. “Juan and I were jockeying for position throughout the race. He ran an amazing race and his driving was very clean and error free. This was a great way to start the 2010 season. However, I know there is still a lot of racing to go this season, so I need to stay focused.”

Guest driver Tony Swan, Senior Editor at Car and Driver magazine, improved six positions during the race today to finish in 19th place. Though Swan has over 30 years of racing experience, he was really impressed with the quality of racing that the young drivers of the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup race delivered today.

“These young drivers really showed me something today. I have been involved in racing for 30 years but I was blown away by the quality of racing that I saw today,” said Swan. “The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup is a great racing series, and I am proud to have had the chance to participate in the first race of the 2010 season. I am really excited to see how I finish tomorrow.”

Clark Campbell, Motorsport Manager, Volkswagen of America, Inc. shared Swan’s feelings regarding today’s strong racing.

“Heading into our third season, everyone expects clean and competitive racing from our Jetta TDI Cup series,” said Campbell. “The quality of racing was amazing today. This is a true testament of all the hard work that everyone puts into the making Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series a success. This was a great way to start the 2010 season. I am looking forward to our drivers putting on another great show tomorrow.”.

This weekend, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup and Series partner, Safety-Kleen Systems, will open the 2010 season just one day after Earth Day in proper fashion by providing some of the most environmentally conscious racing in the country. The Series will once again be using clean diesel fuel in its racecars, demonstrating its commitment to the environment. In the season’s ten events, the Jetta TDI Cup cars will consume approximately two tanks of clean diesel fuel during race conditions. All Volkswagen clean diesel TDI models are certified to run on B5 biodiesel, a mix of 5 percent biodiesel and 95 percent petro diesel.

“Green” Racing at its Best in Virginia as 25 Young, Up-and-Coming Drivers Hit the Track

Following the same green consciousness off the track, the Jetta TDI Cup’s equipment transport vehicles and generators are also powered by B5 Biofuel. In addition, the Series uses biodegradable tableware, lounge furniture with high recycled content, energy-efficient lighting and water stations that reduce the reliance on plastic water bottles.

“Not only is the on-track product fantastic from a fan standpoint, but the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup is also one of the most eco-friendly forms of racing on four wheels,” said Clark Campbell, motorsports manager, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “We’re proud to be associated with a company like Safety-Kleen Systems, because we share a common goal – to provide excitement at the track, while providing it in an environmentally sound manner. It’s fitting that our season-opening weekend falls just after Earth Week because our Series is a true product of green awareness.”

Much like Volkswagen, Safety-Kleen Systems is also committed to protecting the environment. From the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup, to NASCAR, to the IndyCar Series, to the NHRA, Safety-Kleen is at tracks all over the country providing its services. They are the “Official Trackside Environmental Service Provider” for the biggest events in the world of motorsports, including the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500. Safety-Kleen Systems recycles the oils, solvents, fuels and clean-up materials from every Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Series, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Indy Racing League and NHRA National event.

In addition to collecting the used motor oil, brake and transmission fluids, Safety-Kleen Systems also removes them from the track and recycles them. Virginia Tech students earn their racing stripes with the Jetta TDI Cup
There’s no better experience than on-the-job training, which is why nearly 20 engineering students from Virginia Tech University are taking part in the 2010 Jetta TDI Cup season. The Volkswagen Motorsports Jetta TDI Cup program allows Virginia Teach students interested in pursuing a career in motorsports with an opportunity to experience it first-hand. The students provide technical support at Volkswagen’s race shop at VIR and on the road at the Series’ ten race events. During the season, up to fifteen students will travel to each race and work alongside the Series technicians getting hands-on experience with every aspect of motorsports from changing tires to downloading data.

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup internship program is an ideal way for students interested in a career in motorsports to learn about the industry and it provides them with the advantage of real-world experience before they enter the workplace.
 
VW race shop located at VIR
In the spring of 2008, Volkswagen established VIR as its Jetta TDI Cup headquarters by moving in to its 10,000 square foot race shop, located in the motorsports industrial park area at the track. A team of eight shop employees as well as students from Virginia Tech University spend countless hours in the facility preparing the Jetta TDIs for competition.
Volkswagen chose VIR after conducting its 2008 preseason testing at the track. At that point, the decision was made to locate the new Series’ shop at the track because of its first-rate facilities and the proximity to Volkswagen’s U.S. headquarters in Herndon, VA.
 
Right in our own backyard – two drivers hail from Virginia
 
Ryan Ellis (Ashburn, VA) – Ellis is a third-generation racecar driver who began competing in quarter midgets at age four and compiled more than 100 feature race wins. He then advanced into INEX Legends cars where he claimed the Virginia State Championship in 2006. In 2008, he competed in the NASA Mid Atlantic Spec Miata Challenge series where he finished second in the championship standings and was named the NASA Mid Atlantic ‘Driver of the Year.’

Last year, Ryan Ellis made his debut in the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup and finished 13th in the Championship standings. In 2009, Ellis earned five top-ten finishes in the final five events of the season, registering a personal best of seventh at Mosport International Raceway. Earlier this year, Ellis competed in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge at Daytona. He finished 10th in his debut in the Series driving a Mazdaspeed3 for Freedom Autosport. Ellis is completing his sophomore year as a business marketing major at George Mason University.

Jenna Wagner (Bristol, VA) – In 2005, Wagner first hit the track at Lonesome Pine Raceway in Virginia in their Racing 101 Program.   In 2006, she graduated and drove a Dodge Neon in the UCAR Division at Virginia’s Motor Mile Speedway. For the next two seasons, Wagner returned to her favorite track, Lonesome Pine, where she would compete in the MOD-4 Division in a Ford Thunderbird earning Rookie of the Year in 2008. In 2009, Wagner moved to the Charger Division while finishing third in the Championship standings and once again earning Rookie of the Year honors. The 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup season will help Wagner earn valuable seat time and mature as a racecar driver. She plans to not only learn from Series instructors, but her fellow drivers as well. Wagner hopes to one day compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
 
Thompson looks to repeat in 2010
Last season, Jake Thompson earned his first Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup win in the weekend’s second race at VIR. The Calgary native started on the front row and led 12 of the race’s 14 laps before taking the checkered flag. This victory came in just his second event in a racecar; now with an entire season under his belt, you can bet he’s got his sights set on Victory Lane once again in 2010.

‘I really enjoyed racing at VIRginia International Raceway last season, and I can’t wait to get back,’ said Thompson. ‘VIR is an amazing racetrack and last year we were able to put on a great show for the fans. Prior to joining the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup, I didn’t have a tremendous amount of experience racing cars; I’d mostly competed in go-karts. So, to come out last year and win in just my second appearance behind the wheel of a Jetta TDI Cup car was fantastic. Volkswagen has created a truly unique Series that not only provides excitement on the track, but it’s also a great organization designed to help young drivers with their careers. Plus, running on clean diesel fuel, the Series sets the standard as far as ‘green racing.’ I had a blast last year and I’m looking forward to opening the 2010 season next week at VIR as a defending race winner. Certainly there’s a bit of pressure coming back as a former winner, so I just have to make sure I stay calm and focused out there and run a smooth race. To win races in the Jetta TDI Cup, you definitely need a little bit of luck on your side, so if you stay patient and put in a solid performance each time you hit the track, the results will follow.’

Earlier this week in Las Vegas, NV, Volkswagen welcomed driver candidates from throughout North America for three days of in-depth testing and analysis. All drivers were evaluated through a variety of on- and off-track scenarios to establish skill level, potential, and overall ability. Following a collection of driving activities, physical fitness tests, media training, and an in-depth sponsorship workshop from Townsend Bell, who finished 4th in the 2009 Indianapolis 500 (www.townsendbell.com), the final 25 drivers were chosen.

‘Our third year for the Jetta TDI Cup is already shaping up to be the best one yet,’ said Clark Campbell, Motorsport Manager, Volkswagen of America, Inc. ‘We were given the extremely difficult task of selecting only 25 drivers from a such diverse group of individuals who, honestly, all deserve the chance to compete. With 18 new drivers and 7 more returning from last season, the field is undoubtedly set for top-notch competition and racing excitement.’

Drivers will race in ten Jetta TDI Cup events spanning seven road courses in the United States and Mexico in identical, factory-prepared and maintained Jetta TDIs running on clean diesel fuel. The series Champion will win $100,000 toward career development support from Volkswagen, while every driver who competes in the series will earn a Pro Racing license from SCCA at the finish of the season.

The Jetta TDI Cup racecar is powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder TDI clean diesel engine mated to a six-speed, Direct Shift Gearbox® (DSG®) dual-clutch automatic transmission. The car is only slightly modified from stock through the addition of race tires, suspension, brakes, and safety equipment.

Awesome! Our good buds AJ Nealy, Jan Halen and Derek Jones bring a fun video where AJ compares the two cars and the other two race them. If your shopping for a TDI this is a great video to watch. The TDI is an amazing engine, pulls like a mutha and gets great MPG and is practically in-destructive. AJ is a trip too!

It’s no secret what a racing Jetta TDI can do in a race, but what about a Jetta TDI that you would find at your local dealer? In motorsports, theres more to the action than whats seen on the track by fans. Beginning the week of January 18, all of the behind-the-scenes drama of the countrys only professional clean diesel racing series will hit national television with a documentary on the season, titled Racing Under Green.

The compete one-hour documentary film will be aired multiple times across Discovery Communications’ networks (All times Eastern, check local listings for channel information).

With the second successful season of the SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup in the rearview mirror, series officials have begun making preparations for the 2010 season. Today, Volkswagen announced the 10-race schedule for next year, which includes six of the circuits from the 2009 schedule and the series’ first visit to Mexico.

The 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup schedule includes:

• Rounds 1 & 2 – April 23-25 – VIRginia International Raceway (Alton, VA)*
• Round 3 – May 8-9 – New Jersey Motorsports Park (Millville, NJ)
• Round 4 – June 5-6 – Miller Motorsports Park (Tooele, UT)
• Round 5 – June 18-20 – Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (Lexington, OH)
• Round 6 – July 30-August 1 – Autobahn Country Club (Joliet, IL)
• Rounds 7 & 8 – August 20-22 – Road America (Elkhart Lake, WI)*
• Rounds 9 & 10 - September/October TBD – Mexico TBD*

* – Indicates double-race weekends

‘In building the 2010 schedule, we have been able to achieve a great mix of historic tracks and newer facilities in excellent geographic markets in North America,’ said Clark Campbell, motorsport manager, Volkswagen of America, Inc. ‘During the first two seasons of our series, we have clearly demonstrated the benefits of Volkswagen’s clean diesel TDI technology, and we’re looking forward to an exciting 2010 season.’

Volkswagen is currently accepting driver applications for the 2010 season at www.vwmotorsportusa.com. Potential driver candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 26 as of January 1, 2010 and hold a passport from the U.S., Canada or Mexico. In addition, drivers entering the series for the first time must not have competed in any professional racing series regardless of location. Applicants must submit their application along with a season entry fee of $45,000 by December 11, 2009 in order to be considered as a candidate. The entry fee will be fully refunded to those not chosen as a 2010 series driver.

From the driver applications, up to 125 candidates will be selected to attend the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup final driver selection event that will be held February 7-9 in Las Vegas. This final event will determine the final 25-driver lineup for the 2010 season. The final driver selection event includes three days of professional driving instruction, autocross competition, track time in a Jetta TDI Cup car, physical fitness training, a sponsorship development workshop, marketing and media training, and Volkswagen brand familiarization.
