Morning temps were hovering around 55* with the first session starting 8-11:30AM ET. These two days will be a bit more laid back in terms of competition as lots of data is being collected vs top times.

Falken Tire, Paul Miller Racing and Flying Lizard will be giving the new Porsche 911 GT3 RSR its first laps. Both Falken and Paul Miller will also be testing new tires. Falken with its new AZENIS and Paul Miller is now running Dunlop.

It is somewhat refreshing to see the new 911 GT3 RSR running naked and that ass…

In the first session, it was Ferrari and Corvette out front with the BMW’s sneaking in the top six at the end.

Patrick Long had the top Porsche spot in seventh with a 2:02.638.

10th – no44 Flying Lizards – 2:04.099
11th – no17 Falken Tire – 2:04.581
14th – no48 Paul Miller Racing – 2:06.727

We’ve conned our contributing photographer, James Boone, into hanging out down at Sebring and taking some pics for everyone. More from the second session after its completion. Enjoy!

Second session ended up a Ferrari sweep. Extreme Speed Motorsports’ Johannes van Overbeek was the fastest GT driver in the Ferrari F458 Italia setting a time of 2:01.401.

Green Hornet Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3 Cup went Teammate Marco Holzer was ninth in the No. 44 with a 2:06.838. Dirk Mueller of the No. 56 BMW is on the GT pole with a time of 2:05.447, a new class track record.

Bergmeister commented on the session, “Well, P5 wasn’t exactly what we were looking for today. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to run much in the session before qualifying because of all of the reds so that affected our qualifying setup. We’ll use tomorrow’s warmup to finish our setup; I’m optimistic that we’ll have a solid car for the race.”

Holzer added, “In the No. 44 we also have some more work to do before race start tomorrow. On my fast qualifying lap, I was feeling really good about the lap until I missed the apex on the last corner and lost a few tenths.” This is Holzer’s first time running at Road America. He added, “Of the American tracks that I’ve run, Road America is my favorite by far. There is everything here: fast corners and slow ones, blind corners, long straights. I’m really looking forward to being able to race here tomorrow.”

Five races into the nine-race ALMS season, Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Long are currently seventh in the standings in the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche, with 36 points. Teammate Seth Neiman is tenth in the No. 44 Flying Lizard Porsche. Neiman will be joined by Marco Holzer this weekend for ALMS round five: the Road Race Showcase at Road America. Holzer is twelfth in the drivers’ championship. Dirk Mueller and Joey Hand of the No. 56 BMW lead with 90 points. Flying Lizard is fourth in the team championship.

Related posts:

Flying Lizard Porsches Qualify Third and Sixth in GT for Lime Rock

You're reading Flying Lizard qualifies fifth and ninth for Road America originally posted on oneighturbo.com. Hansson and PNR will compete in the GT Challenge class and have signed international sports car talent Dominik Farnbacher to co-drive in Saturday’s featured four-hour race.

The step up to the premier ALMS championship follows back-to-back successful showings by PNR and Hansson in the team’s last two rounds of the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama, including a third-place finish in the most recent race at Lime Rock last month. That strong result, the team’s first career podium showing, followed an eighth-place run earlier that same day in the first race of the Lime Rock doubleheader event. In the team’s race prior to Lime Rock, PNR and Hansson finished fourth at Miller Motorsports in early May.

“We had a great run at Lime Rock with a podium finish and that’s just the momentum we need for the step into ALMS GTC,” Hansson said. “I’m very excited to be going out on track with all the professional drivers of ALMS.”

Although he will co-drive with Hansson for the first time, Farnbacher is well familiar with PNR, parent company Napleton Porsche of Westmont and its General Manager and Team Principal Ron Barnaba.

“I haven’t met David yet, but I heard only good things of him,” Farnbacher said. “He seems to be a super good upcoming talent in the U.S. racing soil. I can’t wait to meet him, work with him in the race, and PNR is familiar to me. I worked together with Ron a few years ago when I used to race in ALMS with a Porsche team, we cooperated with Ron and took his customers out for track days at the Autobahn circuit in Chicago. I met a lot of fantastic people who I still talk to today, and I am glad Ron now has his own team. That can mean only good things. He is a smart businessman, and I am sure he has only the best people working with him.”

Hansson and Farnbacher will be supported by a PNR crew led by winning Team Manager and Crew Chief Tim Olsen and accomplished Race Engineer Marc Manning, both of whom led the GT3 Cup effort.

“That we managed to land Dominik Farnbacher as my co-driver on the team is just icing on the cake,” said Hansson, who is coached by Porsche driver Patrick Long. “We already have a stellar team of mechanics and engineering to put a contender car on the grid, so with a great pro by my side, I think we have everything lined up to do really well”.

Photo: © 2011 Darren Pierson

Farnbacher has been a frequent Ferrari competitor in international sports car competition the last couple of years, but he has just as much experience behind the wheel of Porsche GT3s. He scored multiple victories and finished second in the 2008 ALMS GT2 championship, and was also on the pole for this year’s Rolex 24 At Daytona in a Porsche 911 GT3.

“I grew up driving only Porsches in my young years,” said Farnbacher, who also joined Wolf Henzler in leading his Porsche GT3 team to victory in the 2005 Rolex 24. “After driving the Ferrari a lot lately, people think I am used to driving only a Ferrari and can’t handle a Porsche anymore. But driving to the pole position in Daytona this year I showed that I can still drive a Porsche. The new Porsche Cup car is real race car and great car to drive, so it will be pleasure racing it. In my spare time I also coach racers in Porsche cars so I also get a lot of seat time on top of it.”

Although the current focus is solely on Road America, Hansson and PNR are also planning on running additional ALMS races this year, including the season-ending Petit Le Mans powered by MAZDA at Road Atlanta.

“I love endurance racing and I love the mix of classes that ALMS offers, so it’s going to be a great time,” Hansson said.

Along with Porsche Cars North America and Flying Lizard Motorsports, Napleton Porsche of Westmont will host a pre-race reception at its Chicago-area dealership, Wednesday, August 17, from 6-8 p.m. Several high-performance and racing Porsches will be on display, including a Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, and drivers Hansson, Farnbacher, Long and Joerg Bergmeister are scheduled to attend for autographs and photo opportunities.

The Time Warner Road Race Showcase is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, August 20 with ABC airing the race starting at 4 p.m. ET (2 p.m. PT) on Sunday, August 21. Live video coverage on race day will be available at 3:45 p.m. ET on ESPN3.com in the US, and americanlemans.com for international viewers. Spencer Pumpelly and Duncan Ende were one of the few duos to avoid penalties or spinning in the rain, thus enabling them to score their second GTC win in a row and third straight for TRG.

“It was a good win,” Pumpelly said. “I gotta give credit to the guys in the faster cars because I know I had a hard time. Some of those guys that pitted earlier really deserve a hats off; it was hard to keep car at speed. There was really not a lot of drama for us except wondering if we`re going to go green or not. I thought the win was already ours when Duncan handed it over. He did a good job hanging on to the lead…Thanks to Wolf. I was just following him most of the time (in the rain). I was just lifting on the straight-aways because there was so much water.”

“The TRG guys gave us a great car,” Ende added. “We rolled off the truck and had a bit of a tire situation on the test day. During the race we had a bit of a mix up with a back GT car. About 45 min into the stint I begin to feel it like we had the hardware to make it stand.”

Photo: © 2011 Darren Pierson | oneighturbo.com

Defending race winner Black Swan Racing came ready to defend its title, but a delaminated tire near the one-hour, 30-minute mark sent Jeroen Bleekemolen back in the No. 54 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup he shares with Tim Pappas. But we’re still hoping that the better strategy of our Flying Lizard crew can make the difference over the race distance.”

With four Porsche 911 GT3 RSR’s racing, the others were a bit off pace but you can never count any one of them out over the 2:45 hour race.

Atlanta driver, Bryan Sellers ended up 9th 1.382 seconds back. It is the most convenient circuit to our family in New Jersey and we’ve pulled a decent number of test days here collectively. We also host hospitality here every year with our partners, who are all mostly based in the New York metropolitan area. Of course, the attendance of friends and family make it special to us as well.”

Lime Rock has also been good to Sascha Maassen, who will once again share the No. 48 Porsche with Bryce Miller this weekend. Maassen, of Aachen, Germany, scored an overall victory in 2007 driving the LMP2 Porsche Spyder and has finished on the podium in each of his three ALMS starts at the venue, which at 1.51 miles in length is the shortest circuit on the ALMS calendar. That presents unique challenges.

“Lime Rock is short, narrow and tricky, so there’s lots of potential to make mistakes,” says Maassen. “I think patience is one of the main things if you have a good car. If the car is not so good, then you need to be patient too, as you have to wait until the others make mistakes.”

The Paul Miller Racing team has been working diligently to ensure that Maassen and Bryce Miller will have a good car at Lime Rock since the most recent ALMS race at Long Beach in April. Maassen led the team’s first laps at that race and the team has been encouraged by the performance of the racecar and particularly the car’s Yokohama tires in testing.

“We have tested some different settings and also played with the tire pressures to find the best operating range in the tire,” says Bryce Miller. “Our expectations are to improve again from Long Beach and to close down the gap on our competition. I thin we have already felt part of that step in our test. Every time we go out, we are getting better.”

It will be a busy weekend off the track for Bryce Miller, Maassen and the Paul Miller Racing team at Lime Rock. Darren Law and Seth Neiman fared better, bringing the No. 44 to an 8th place GT finish from its 13th place start. The No. 56 BMW won in GT, the No. 4 Corvette finished in P2 and the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari was P3.

At the time of the incident, Long was in P1, nearing the end of his first stint. The No. 56 BMW was P2 and the No. 4 Corvette in P3. Patrick explained, “I had been fighting hard since starting fourth on the grid: the BMW, the No. 4 Corvette and I had all led. Just before the incident, the No. 01 Ferrari had come out of the pits on cold tires. I drove two corners off-line trying to get around. Then, going into Turn 8, I was on the inside and braked in my normal position but I had so much debris on my tires that I couldn’t get the tires stopped and flush-hit the concrete wall in the exit. At any other track, that would have meant just two wheels off in the dirt but unfortunately here that was the end of our race. I feel really badly that this happened: everyone worked really hard to get us here and to see it send so abruptly is tough.”

Law added, “We had better luck in the No. 44: a trouble-free run in a solid car. Traffic was very difficult this year because the GTC and LMPC classes were equal to us down the straight; the only way to get by was to force your way through under braking or through the corner. And here, there was no room for error so you had to be very careful. We are happy that we brought the No. 44 home without a scratch and now have some good momentum going into the next event.”

Up next for the Lizards is the 24 Heures du Mans at the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France, June 11-12, 2011.

Related posts:

ALMS: Flying Lizard’s Patrick Long 4th on grid for Long Beach

You're reading ALMS: Terrible ending for Flying Lizard Motorsports at Long Beach originally posted on oneighturbo.com. His no. 77 Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, which was sponsored for the weekend by local hotspot Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘n Waffles, would line up fourth in the GT-C class for Saturday’s two-hour ALMS contest.

Two hours later, the team would be celebrating their second podium in only three races in the ALMS, albeit with a bit of controversy as Stanton and Dion von Moltke’s no. 68 made contact down the back straightaway while contesting for the third spot.

Team owner John Potter took the green flag to start the race, battling for second place in the first hour while conquering the challenges of making room for faster prototype traffic around the tricky confines of a street course. The team split strategies with the leaders during an early yellow, electing not to pit, which created a real strategy situation for all teams as they gambled on when another yellow might fall. An anticipated mid-race caution period unfortunately never came, and the no. 77 spent a long time on fading tires, with Potter doing his best to keep pace with the leading pack. Handing the car over to teammate Craig Stanton with under an hour to go, an uncharacteristic spin from Stanton set up the chase at the end with von Moltke, which saw him claw back the thirty-second lead that von Moltke enjoyed.

“With so many local fans really rooting for our car, the pressure was on to deliver a podium,” said Potter. “It was definitely a rough day out there – we got knocked around a bit by faster traffic and I got into the back of a car when we stacked up in the hairpin. These races really are about keeping all four tires on the car and pointed in the right direction. But all things considered it’s great to get another podium in the ALMS and we had a great time here in Long Beach, enjoying the sun and eating lots of chicken and waffles.”

Stanton, while happy that he was able to drive the Magnus Racing Porsche onto the podium, was not thrilled about the way von Moltke’s race came to an end.

“I feel bad that Dion’s car ended up damaged, but it was one of those deals,” said Stanton. “I ran my line and he ran his, and he went for a ride into the wall. I don’t like when things like that happen but there isn’t any margin for error on a street circuit like this. I love competing here at Long Beach, and it was incredible to enjoy a lot of local support for our team and to be partnered with Roscoe’s.”

The television replay of the American Le Mans Series at Long Beach will run Sunday on ESPN2 at 5:00 PM ET, and is available on demand at ESPN3.com.

Related posts:

ALMS: JDX Racing debuts new “Gold” livery and sponsor at Long Beach

You're reading ALMS: Magnus Racing Finishes third in Long Beach GT-C originally posted on oneighturbo.com. However, there was no time to celebrate as the #11 Porsche GTC machine needed preparation for the April 16th Long Beach, California street race, a venue that tests the mettle of any team.

JDX Racing is proud to introduce a new commercial partner this weekend – Petropavlovsk PLC.

Petropavlovsk PLC is the third largest gold mining company in Russia, with 2011 expected production of 600,000 ounces (c. US $840 million). Traded on the London Stock Exchange and as an American Depository Receipt managed by Bank of New York, Petropavlovsk PLC is globally recognized for their commitment to performance, sustainability, environmental responsibility and best mining practices.

Peter Hambro, Chairman / Co-Founder commented, “Petropavlovsk PLC is a leader in low-cost, high-yield, sustainable gold mining and JDX Racing is emerging as a leader in ALMS GTC racing. The blend of our two companies, combined with the global interest of the American Le Mans Series, creates an international reach that is important to a company like ours.”

Debuting at Long Beach, the #11 JDX Racing Porsche GTC, with the help of JDX Racing partner Trick Technologies, will appear as if dipped in pure gold.

JDX Racing team owner Jeremy Dale said, “I am very pleased to welcome Petropavlovsk PLC as a partner to JDX Racing and to the American Le Mans Series. We are excited to show off our striking new gold livery to the capacity crowds at Long Beach. Our Porsche is going to shine as bright as the California sun and deliver a unique “wow” factor I’m sure race fans will find unforgettable.”

Hambro added, “What particularly attracted us to this sponsorship was the innovative showcase of our principal product; pure gold. The Petropavlovsk Porsche will bring real brilliance to Long Beach. We hope to see our golden GTC lead the class, just as gold itself has outperformed money as a safe investment haven in these economic times.”

In addition to its commercial news, JDX Racing has been working tirelessly to enhance its chassis setup and to shave time off pit stops. In a short, two-hour race like Long Beach, starting up front on the grid and spending less time in the pits will be key to a successful weekend.

Lead driver Nick Ham spoke, “The narrow track, tight corners and long straights combined with a 30-car field are going to make for some very intense racing this weekend. I’m really looking forward to wheeling this incredible new livery through the streets and with some work and a bit of racing luck, to a podium finish.”
-ALMS | Photo: Jalopnik

Related posts:

ALMS: Pitbulls, Chicken, Waffles and Magnus Racing tackle Long Beach

You're reading ALMS: JDX Racing debuts new “Gold” livery and sponsor at Long Beach originally posted on oneighturbo.com.
