Only one of two valuable Audis stolen from eight-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen have been recovered.

Eight-time Le Mans champion Tom Kristensen woke up Monday evening at his home in central Jutland to find two of his personal Audi cars missing from his garage.

One, an Audi Q7, was found abandoned at a nearby hotel by police on Wednesday. But the other, an R8, has not yet been located. The cars are valued at around 2 million kroner each.

It’s never nice to have your home violated,’ Kristensen told Nordjyske Stiftstidende newspaper. ‘But beyond that the incident was pretty un-dramatic.

Andy Lally (Dacula, GA), Craig Stanton (Long Beach, CA), Mike Simon (Montgomery Village, MD) and Michael DeNino (Gaithersburg, MD) have teamed up to take on the 24 Hours of Big Bear mountain bike relay race.

“I am really looking forward to the challenge,” says Lally, a two time winner of the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Lally, who currently races in several premier auto racing series in the United States, including the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, ALMS, Rolex Sports Car Series and Koni Sports Car Challenge, recently started competing in mountain bike races where he has seen success early on.

Craig Stanton is a long time veteran of all things athletic and all things racing. Stanton has 20 years racing experience, including competition in NASCAR, ALMS, Grand-AM, USAC, Score and SCCA Pro. Stanton has also competed in several adventure races and 27 triathlons, but he is best known for his work behind the wheel of a GT sports car.

Mike Simon has more cycling experience than motor racing. Having competed in a 24 hour mountain bike race in West Virginia six times, Simon is extremely experienced with the terrain and weather conditions unique to the location of the race. “We are all aware of the challenges we will be facing.” says Simon “I’ve been on the podium at this race twice before, but this time I have my eye on the top step.” Aside from his cycling experience, Simon has competed the ICA and Formula Yamaha WKA karting series.

Michael DeNino, the the youngest of the four, recently competed in the inaugural season of the SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup with strong results and was recognized as the most dedicated driver in the 2008 season. Aside from his touring car experience, DeNino also has experience in junior formula cars, karting and cycling.

“We have a very strong, experienced team,” says DeNino. “Our team is very fortunate to have support from Performance Drink, webmountainbike.com, Elite Cycles and Blue Competition Cycles. We will benefit greatly from having technologically superior equipment, allowing us to be both fast and consistent. It’s going to be great!”

The race is a true test of endurance. Each rider will complete the 12 mile course roughly four times throughout the 24 hour period. “It’s going to be a real challenge,” notes DeNino. “We are all going to be pushing our limits, everyone on our team wants to win. We are all very competitive.”

Wow. Hamburg slot car racing series and Volkswagen Motorsport staged the 7th round. Great stuff and we want that New Beetle in the pic! However a Subaru Impreza WRC does lead the in points.

For the first time in its 18-year history, the rallye racing Carrera Cup was the guest of an automobile manufacturer’s racing department: at Volkswagen Motorsport, the Hamburg slot car racing series, which is contested by numerous personalities from the world of racing and the media, staged its seventh round of the season.

On a four-lane wooden track of Volkswagen Product Communications 33 slot car enthusiasts took part in practice sessions and competed in pre- and final runs delivering thrilling 1:24 scale motorsport into the late evening hours. The finale of the top four contenders saw the end of a long string of victories: after five Lamborghini exploits in a row, Eldert Hedden (Subaru Impreza WRC) celebrated his first win of the season.

With places two and three for Michelin spokesman Jan Hennen and Volkswagen designer Helmut Schmid the two Lamborghini drivers from the AUTOartMICHELIN team further extended their commanding lead of the standings. After seven of ten races Schmid continues ranking at the top of the leaderboard with a wide margin of 183 points in front of Hennen (151).

Other contenders were Volkswagen Junior Constantin Dressler and Polo Cup driver Maximilian Carsten. The Volkswagen rally “factory” drivers on the other hand were prevented from running as guest entrants: they were in Morocco with the Race Touareg to prepare for the 2009 Dakar Rally.

Matt Crowhurst and his Transporter Sportline

The Volkswagen Transporter van is an iconic vehicle and over 10 million have been produced. This year the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Transporter and launched the new Transporter Sportline kombi model, which made its official debut at the CV Show. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles range now includes the Caddy Transporter and Crafter van ranges, plus the Caravelle MPV and California campervan, all available from its dedicated, nationwide network of Van Centres in the UK.

Professional wakeboarder, instructor, TV presenter and commentator, Matt Crowhurst, aged 27, is using a Volkswagen Transporter Sportline van to get him and his boards, boat and jetski to a busy schedule of competitions and festivals this summer.

The VW Transporter has already taken Matt to both Wakestock venues (Blenheim Palace and Abersoch), and next month the van will be towing his jetski to the Rip Curl Boardmasters festival in Newquay.

The stylish Transporter Sportline is available as a van with standard and long wheelbases, and now as a fiver-seater kombi as well. The Sportline range is distinguished by lowered suspension, special 18 inch alloy wheels, chrome side rails, a rear roof spoiler, plus a lower front spoiler and chrome upper and lower front grilles.

The vehicle interior has the luxury of bespoke leather upholstery, electric windows and door mirrors, as well as a radio/CD and air conditioning for cool sounds and air. There’s also plenty of performance with a 2.5-litre TDI PD engine with 174 PS that can sprint from zero to 62 mph in 12.2 seconds.

The Transporter is Volkswagen’s best-selling van. Since it was introduced in 1950, over 10 million Transporters have been produced making it one of the most popular vans in the world.

“Volkswagen vans have always had a cult following. This van really looks the business and is perfect for all my gear – and for sleeping in, if necessary!” said Matt Crowhurst.

“I can fit all my kit in the van, including boards, wetsuits, clothing, winch and a whole lot more, while still towing my jetski or boat and I have a couple of friends plus their gear onboard for the ride,” he continued.

Another legendary race will kick off this weekend. This one isn’t a 24hr but rather a 3 week race and its called the Tour de France!

Škoda Auto will act as the Main Partner of the legendary Tour de France for the fifth time this year. The cornerstone of the Company’s presentation will be the new-generation Škoda Superb – the official vehicle of the Tour de France. The Superb will be used by TdF Director Christian Prudhomme and members of the TdF organisation team, as well as VIP guests. In addition, the new model will play a dominant role in the advertising convoy familiar to fans along the route. The TdF will see about 250 Škoda vehicles of all currently available model lines this year.

With fuel expenses that rival Joan Rivers’ botox bill, a lot of smaller towns are feeling the budget crunch. USA TODAY reports the Holly Springs, Georgia, police department is doing something about it. No, they’re not switching to biofuel or putting their officers on bicycles. Starting July 1, if you’re stopped for speeding in this Atlanta suburb, you’ll be charged a $12 ‘fuel surcharge’ for the gas the po-po used to catch you. (They didn’t say if they’d increase the surcharge by the number of cars used to run you down.) Police chief Ken Ball expects the surcharge to add between $19.5k and $26k to the city’s coffers. Looks like Atlanta’s next; Monday, the  city council approved a proposal to add $10 to $15 to tickets for speeding and other moving violations within their borders. Don’t smirk if you live elsewhere, though – Ball says he’s been ‘inundated’ by calls from other cities wanting a copy of the ordinance.

Five-year partnership between Volkswagen and D.C. United highlighted by jersey sponsorship rights

D.C. United jerseys will now feature the Volkswagen logo as part of their sponsorship deal. (D.C. United)Washington, D.C. (May 6, 2008) – D.C. United and Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced a five-year partnership agreement that will see the two brands join forces in a landmark deal that includes Volkswagen’s logo on the shirts of the most successful team in the history of American professional soccer. Volkswagen will also be prominently featured through a variety of other club and in-stadium marketing components. United will debut the new uniforms on national television Thursday night when the club hosts the Chicago Fire. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at RFK Stadium.

“As with all of our important decisions, we took a very strategic approach to engaging the market of potential jersey sponsors,” said United President and CEO Kevin Payne. “We wanted to be sure we found the right partner, and on the right terms. We’re thrilled to have this relationship now with Volkswagen, which is ideal from our point of view — a multi-national company with a strong brand, a cultural understanding of our game, a commitment to our community, and a reputation for thinking a bit out of the box. For us, VW is a perfect partner.”

In addition to the traditional advertising and promotional benefits often found in sponsorship agreements, Volkswagen was insistent on providing the fans of D.C. United some added value while attending games at RFK Stadium. Volkswagen’s fan initiatives include the Volkswagen Garage, a new interactive area located behind the north goal at RFK Stadium. The Volkswagen Garage will serve as a hospitality area and vehicle showroom with space for 1,000 people. The Garage offers a unique brand experience and features: soccer based car games, FIFA Xbox 360 stations, live T-shirt screen printing, branded merchandise, hammocks and Adirondack chairs for relaxation, and a whole lot more. Volkswagen will also be a participating sponsor of D.C. United’s Soccer Celebration located in Parking Lot 8.

Going forward, the first 50 Volkswagens to enter lot 4 on gamedays will also be treated to a complimentary spot.

In addition to the partnership with D.C. United, Major League Soccer and Volkswagen today announced a partnership that makes Volkswagen the official automotive partner of Major League Soccer. The partnership delivers MLS league and collective team marks and logos and marketing assets at league events such as the Pepsi MLS All-Star Game and MLS Cup, Major League Soccer’s championship game.

Volkswagen’s jersey sponsorship element makes the company the first group to adorn the front of United’s shirt in club history. Traditionally, the space is recognized as the most valuable inventory a soccer club has to offer and is reserved for a crest that supports the team, sharing in the organizational goals and ideals.
