The atmosphere of the event was powerful, with helicopters flying in and out of the track, cars on track from sunrise to sunset and over 113,000 fans in attendance.

Road Atlanta has a long history as one of the premier road racing facilities in North America, being as enjoyable for spectators as it is for the drivers. This track most certainly did not disappoint. Having never driven on the circuit I was extremely anxious for our first practice session Friday morning. The session went very well for me, as I posted the 3rd fastest time. The session was marred with offs and crashes, with three drivers crashing their vehicles in the free practice. While practice took place early in the morning, our qualifying would not begin until 6:30pm. This gave me plenty of time to review my strategy for qualifying as well as stop by and visit some familiar faces in the paddock.

Throughout the 30 minute qualifying session I pushed the limits of my Jetta until about 10 minutes remained in the session, when I pulled into the pits to cool off my tires. I did not know it at the time, but at this point in qualifying I was on pole. I set back onto the circuit with a few minutes left in the session. Giving it everything I had I was able to slightly improve my time, but my competitors also stepped up their performance. When the session ended, I had posted the 3rd fastest time. I was thrilled; this was a great place to start the race and having improved my qualifying performance over the last several races I was feeling confident.

Our race was on Saturday morning immediately before the start of the ALMS Petit Le Mans, a 10 hour endurance race and the main event of the weekend. Starting 3rd on the grid, I got a great launch and bumped the first place car to move along the inside of second place going into turn one. Heading up the hill towards turn two we battled for position, touching wheels and also touching mirrors, pushing my left mirror inwards, rendering it useless for the remainder of the race. Successful in making the pass, I sat in second place for then next few laps. A couple of laps later I got anxious and decided to pass the lead car going into the chicane, turn 10a on the circuit. Having lost momentum, I was passed by two cars a few turns later. From there it was a battle for position until the end of the race, with positions swapping regularly among the cars in the lead pack. In fifth place on the last lap, I passed for fourth position two turns before the back straight but ran wide on the exit dropping two wheels off the track. I was able to regain control but my tires were dirty as I entered the turn heading onto the back straight, causing me to run wide. I bounced through the dirt trying not to lose too much speed. The car I had just passed easily took back his position, and three other cars now had a run on me. With one car to my left and two cars to my right we raced four wide down the back straight. Our door handles were touching and it was a drag race down to the chicane. As the other cars started to creep past me, I got a huge boost from being in the draft and got the most amazing run of my life. Heading down to the chicane the motor was tapped out; the shift lights turned to red. I broke extremely late, turned in, and amazingly did not lose any positions. I would finish fifth in what was the most extraordinary race of the season!

The race at Road Atlanta was a fabulous end to a great season. I learned a tremendous amount this year, not only about driving but about many of the other aspects of racing as well. I am extremely grateful for the support of all of the people who have helped me this season as well as the people who have helped me to reach this point in my life. It has truly been a wild journey. I could never have dreamt that I would meet so many wonderful people through my participation in the Jetta TDI Cup this season. My fellow drivers, event coordinators, media team, technical team, driver coaches, and the film crew who documented every step of this season have all played a special part in making the first season of the Jetta TDI Cup spectacular. Thank you.

I finished the season 7th in the championship points standings. At the awards banquet I was deeply honored to be recognized as the “Most Dedicated Driver”. Mark Miller, Ryan Arciero and Jan Heylen presented me with the award and a beautiful Oakley watch. I was deeply honored to receive this award, especially being recognized by Mark, Ryan and Jan as they are all extremely hard working and devoted individuals. The watch has quickly become my most prized possession as it represents all of the energy and devotion I have put into my life and towards my career as a driver. I look forward with great anticipation to competing in the Jetta TDI Cup in 2009.

- Michael | Michael DeNino Racing

Related posts:

Jetta TDI Cup: Season finale to take place at Road Atlanta

You're reading Jetta TDI Cup: Michael DeNino finishes season strong at Road Atlanta originally posted on oneighturbo.com. All eyes were on the ADAC Polo Cup driver from Cape Town, South Africa, Shane Williams #10, who was the first ever guest driver in the Jetta TDI Cup. The 21 year old Williams secured pole position for the first qualifying race and ultimately won the first race of the weekend. Liam Kenney #35, Sterling, Va., won the second race of the weekend, his first visit to the top of the podium this season. Proving the extremely high level of competition and parity in the series, the Jetta TDI Cup has seen a different driver top the podium in each of the seven races this season.

This weekend provided a strenuous schedule with two qualifying races and two races in three days. The Friday qualifying session was dampened by rain in the morning, causing the drivers to adjust their driving style to hold on through the long weekend. ADAC Polo Cup guest driver Shane Williams secured pole position for the first race on Saturday.

The second qualifier came on dryer conditions in the late afternoon on Friday. With better grip and a greater understanding of the course at New Jersey, the drivers were able to spread out on the track to attempt a fast lap run for the top spot on the grid. With only seven minutes remaining, John Shim #29, hit the guard rail on turn two bringing the qualifying round to a full-course caution. Shim was okay but did not run in any of the races this weekend. Timmy Megenbeir #17, claimed the pole position for the second race on Sunday, the first pole position victory for Megenbier.

The first race of the weekend on Saturday ran under cloudy skies with dry conditions on the track. As the flag dropped on the standing start, the drivers bunched up to three cars wide in turn one, making passes after turn two. Shane Williams maintained the lead over both Chris Castagna #37 and Mark Pombo #20 who fought for second place.

On lap seven, David Jurca #5, took advantage of Chris Castagna and Mark Pombo’s battle to slip into second place. Pombo fell back to 9th place from second after heading off track, but was able to come back and finish in fifth place; he also secured the fastest lap time of 1 minute and 31.806 seconds averaging 88.229 mph.

Lap 12 was brought under a double-yellow due to debris on the track at the apex of turn two. This tightened the field and shortened Shane William’s lead. On lap 14, the green flag was dropped and Williams increased his lead on David Jurca. On lap 17, Liam Kenney passed Gary Williams Jr. #38, on turn one to secure a third place finish. One of the biggest movers of the race was Andrew Cordeiro #26, who moved from starting in 20th position to finish in 13th place, cautiously moving up the field of drivers.

In the end, the first race had one lap run under yellow for debris, and proved to be a close competitive battle for all spots in the finishing order. On the podium was Shane Williams in first place, David Jurca in second place and Liam Kenney in third. As Shane Williams is a guest driver, he does not earn points from the race subsequently all Jetta TDI Cup drivers move up one position in points, bringing Gary Williams Jr. into third place in points for race six.

The second race of the weekend on Sunday ran under a cloudy sky and on a wet track. Due to the wet conditions, the race began as a rolling start with three laps run under yellow behind the pace car before the green flag dropped. Into the first turn, the drivers were four cars wide, but they managed to make it through without incident. Timmy Megenbier had a strong lead into lap one, but in lap two turn one he spun out and allowed Josh Hurley #11 to take the race lead.

Lap three brought out a full-course caution as David Jurca, the second place winner of race six went off course suffering front end wheel damage, which ended the race for him. Out front there was a battle for the top three positions between Josh Hurley, Liam Kenney and Chris Holman #31. On lap nine Holman tried to pass Kenney on turn one, but Kenney was able to hold him off to secure his position.

Mark Pombo, who started 23rd, was the biggest mover in the race finishing in 6th place making up most of the lost positions on lap nine. Again, he had the fastest lap time of 1 minute and 45.311 seconds averaging 76.915 mph.

On one of the last laps, Chris Kuenning #30 lost control entering the front stretch and slammed into the outside tire wall. With safety vehicles dispatched, the last lap of the race was run under yellow, and as the checkered flag dropped, Liam Kenney, Josh Hurley and Chris Holman grabbed the top three places. In total, eight laps of the second race of the double header were run under the yellow flag.

Complete Jetta TDI Cup final race results are listed below for the first race of the weekend with finishing position, starting position in parentheses, driver, hometown, car sponsor and laps completed.

New Jersey Motorsport Park Race 1 results:
1. It was a crazy race and to think that Volkswagen Motorsports called the shots on the slicks… Unfortunately DeNino couldn’t capitalize on the great weekend from Iowa.

Rounds six and seven of the Jetta TDI Cup took place September 26 – 28 at New Jersey Motorsports Park, the only double header weekend on the 2008 calendar. Friday was a full day for all of the drivers, with a practice session and two qualifying sessions. All three sessions would see different conditions.

The first practice session was run on slick tires in wet conditions. The track started to dry up within a few laps however, it started to rain shortly thereafter with the rain lasting a few minutes. The wet track conditions would turn out to be important practice for later in the weekend. The next session (qualifying for race one) was again run in wet conditions, with the skies opening up shortly before the practice session. The mechanics did an excellent job of changing all 31 of the cars from slicks to rain tires in only 20 minutes. The third session (qualifying for race two) took place under dry conditions on slick tires.

Qualifying for race one went well. It was again a very fun experience to drive on a competition wet tire as it provides a great amount of grip. In mildly wet conditions, it is not too different from driving on a dry track. I was able to manage the 11th fastest time, but I knew I would be able to improve my position in the first race.

By the time qualifying for race two rolled around the track had dried and we were back on slick tires. I had a hard time finding clear track and making a clean lap. I just wasn’t able to nail down the last sector of the track and paid for it dearly, posting a disappointing 17th fastest time. With qualifying over, I needed to move foreword and focus on Saturday morning’s race.

The track was dry for race one. Starting from 11th I got an excellent start, gaining a few positions on the first lap. From there I worked for the rest of the race to catch and pass a few more cars to finish fifth. Pleased with my finishing position, my attention now shifted to preparing for the next race where I would need to make up considerable ground to finish well.

Race two was early on Sunday morning. With a wet track from rain the night before, the decision was made to run the cars on slick tires in anticipation that the track would dry quickly. Due to the wet condition, we started the race in single file behind the safety car instead of the typical standing start procedure. There was a considerable amount of water on the track and although we were not aqua planing, the driver’s disparity in speeds and approaches to the conditions created additional challenges. I was able to pick up a few positions in the first lap and a half of the race, mainly from people going off track or crashing. About half way through the second green flag lap the double yellow was shown while entering one of the high speed corners. Seeing the double yellow and recognizing there were no cars off track in this section, I planned on gradually reducing my speed until I caught up with the safety car. I was caught way off guard when the driver in front of me significantly reduced his speed. Doing everything I could to avoid running up the back of him I had no choice but to brake abruptly in the middle of the corner. With the car sliding sideways as I tired to avoid him, I spun the car off track, did a complete 360 and continued. I lost a few positions but avoided damaging my car.

A few laps later the track went green. Again I was able to gain positions primarily from simply staying on the track. At one point in the race a few cars had hit each other and had gone off track in front of me. I could tell that one of the cars would slide back across the track, which left me with two choices. One choice would be to go for it and try to pass the car before it slides back across the track, the other would be to slow down and wait for the car to come across the track before I continued. I chose to go for it! As I was passing the car I could see it coming across the track in my peripheral vision. Bam! My car was hit and knocked sideways as it just grazed my rear bumper. I caught the slide and was able to continue without incident. As the car just grazed me, it slammed into the car following me, putting both cars out of the race. This, combined with a separate incident, brought out the safety car once more. The race would end behind the safety car; I would finish the race in 13th.

I felt like I did a great job in race one, but having spun in race two was frustrating as I could have finished much better than 13th position. Going into the season’s last race in Atlanta I am 8th in the championship points standings. I look to improve my overall ranking in the championship heading into the final race and finish off the season on a high note.

Check back at michaeldenino.com throughout the race weekend for live timing and scoring information, as well as updates after each track session.

Jetta TDI Cup – New Jersey Motorsports Park | Michael DeNino Racing

Related posts:

Shane Williams places first in Jetta TDI Cup race at New Jersey Motorsports Park

You're reading Jetta TDI Cup: Michael DeNino’s race report from New Jersey Motorsports Park originally posted on oneighturbo.com. Our Michael DeNino did a great job working his way up to a Top 5 finish. He qualified 11th.

David Jurca, Shane Williams and Liam Kenney top the podium at the Jetta TDI Cup race at the New Jersey Motorsport Park.

Shane Williams, Capetown, South Africa, stood in the top place on the podium at New Jersey Motorsport Park on Saturday, while David Jurca, Federal Way, Wash., claimed first place in championship points due to Williams’ guest driver appearance in the series. Rounding out the top three point finishers were Liam Kenney, Sterling, Va., and Gary Williams, Jr., Dana Point, Calif., who will receive point honors for second and third places respectively.

“I started sixth and just focused on working my way up, and once I was in second all my focus was to stay in second and not really worry about Shane because either way if I maintained my position I would get first place points,” said Jurca. “Those first place points are huge in the championship for me. I would like to thank Pignataro VW and Red Bull this weekend for supporting me through the race.”

Heading in to today’s race, Jurca, Kenny and Williams Jr., were placed fifth, seventh and fifteenth respectively in the championship points of this inaugural series.

“I thought the race was great with real clean driving up front, everybody was right on each other but we kept our space,” said Kenney. “I was really excited that Jetta TDI drove flawlessly today and being patient really paid off because I went from starting 10th and ended up in third.”

“Starting third I had a good shot to win it today and it was a real close race, with a lot of hard fought battling,” said Williams Jr. “I dropped one wheel and Liam got past me and in this type of series that is all it takes. One mistake and it put me a position back.”

The race was run on a dry 2.25-mile track, and saw a yellow flag only once despite a number of cars experiencing contact while racing. The drivers will now begin preparations for tomorrow’s race scheduled to take place at 8:30 a.m.

Complete Jetta TDI Cup provisional race results are listed below with finishing position, starting position in parentheses, driver, hometown, car sponsor and laps completed.

1.
