Murciélago series number 4,000 arrives in China

Italian Super sportscar manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini proudly celebrates a historic event: an LP 670-4 SuperVeloce version of its current flagship V12 Murciélago, carrying series number 4,000, has just left Lamborghini’s factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese, destined for a Chinese buyer.

Commenting on the record production, Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann said, “The enthusiasm our products incite makes us proud and confirms that the company’s product strategy and model range are a winning combination, producing exceptionally desirable super sportscars.”

Only around 2,900 of the previous V12 model, the Lamborghini Diablo, were built over eleven years of production.

The Murciélago SuperVeloce LP 670-4 carrying series number 4,000 is a lightweight version of the Murciélago LP 640 on which it is based.

With an increase in power to 670 hp from its 6.5 V12 engine, and weight reduced by 100 kg, the power-to-weight ratio of the SuperVeloce is 2.3kg/hp. The 0-100km/h acceleration is blisteringly quick at 3.2sec, and top speed reaches 342 km/h (212mph). Only 350 SuperVeloce special series models will be produced, with each one’s soft contours and razor-sharp edges showing the features of an extreme driving machine.

This SuperVeloce will be delivered to Lamborghini’s showroom in Hangzhou: China has become a strategically important market for Lamborghini’s super sportscars. The Italian car manufacturer has a sales affiliate in China as well as seven dealers who have recorded an exponential increase in sales, with the Pacific-Asian area responsible for a quarter of all Lamborghini cars produced.

Murciélago series number 4,000 shows off its carbon fibre body painted in orange Arancione Atlas, a luxurious cockpit in Alcantara and carbon fibre inserts, black sports bucket seats with orange contrasting trim and an imposing rear spoiler which improves vehicle stability at high speeds.

Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. officially unveiled the “Automobili Lamborghini Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory” (ACSL) yesterday with an event held at the University of Washington. The unveiling of the lab publicly marks the leading super sports car manufacturer’s commitment to investing in the future of carbon fiber technologies by partnering with leaders in aerospace and composite material development, including University of Washington and The Boeing Company.

Lamborghini has made a substantial financial contribution to the ACSL with the goal of furthering the university’s long-time research in aeronautics and astronautics with partners such as The Boeing Company and the Federal Aviation Administration for application in super sports car development. Lamborghini intends to utilize the studies conducted through the ACSL to develop future vehicles with lighter, stronger and more versatile materials.

“Lamborghini remains committed to investing in its future, and advancing carbon fiber composite technologies is the key to achieving many our goals,” said Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. “As Lamborghini has long been influenced by aerospace technology, the University of Washington’s collaboration with The Boeing Company and the Federal Aviation Administration is the complementary fit to furthering our research and development programs that will continue to set the benchmark in carbon fiber technology.”

The ACSL has already contributed significantly to Lamborghini’s impact in certification methodology for carbon fiber composite materials. Lamborghini has collaborated with ACSL head Professor Paolo Feraboli on research projects since 2001. In 2007, the super sports car manufacturer increased activities with projects focused on “Crash Behavior of Composite Automotive Primary Structures.” Since 2008, Lamborghini has contracted a research project with the Advanced Structures Technology Group of Boeing Research & Technology, with the ACSL supporting the research collaboration.

“Partnerships between the University of Washington and industry leaders like Lamborghini give our students the advantage of working on real-world problems,” said University of Washington President Mark Emmert. “We are excited that University of Washington researchers and Lamborghini engineers will be collaborating to bring innovative materials to the automobile industry.”

Carbon fiber is ideal for use in super sports car manufacturing due to the density of the material, which is far lower than steel. Substituting steel with carbon fiber reduces weight, which not only enhances the performance of the vehicle by increasing the power-to-weight ratio, but also lowers CO2 emissions by reducing the overall mass. Carbon fiber is also stiffer than other materials, thus creating better handling characteristics. In addition, carbon fiber provides greater manufacturing versatility, decreases the time it takes to make parts and simplifies the structure of the components. These key points provide proof that carbon fiber is the best material for nearly all applications which are essential for creating Lamborghini’s extreme, uncompromising and unmistakably Italian super sports cars.

The ACSL will provide the setting for testing and characterization, manufacturing and machining of carbon fiber materials.

Lamborghinis factory in SantAgata Bolognese, is building its fastest car ever the Murcielago SV, of which just 350 will be made. The $450,000 Murcielago SV launches from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 212 miles per hour. The factory builds the car almost entirely by hand including its engine and body. The car is also painted and assembled by hand, including installation of the famous Lamborghini scissor doors. Every car is custom-built to order, and only 2.7 cars are completed per day.

Last weekend, the restored Vulcan bomber, the only one in the world now flying, lumbered slowly and noisily over my house. And I damn nearly wet myself with excitement. I ran around the garden, clutching at my private parts with one hand, pointing with the other and screaming at the top of my lungs for the children to put down their Facebooks so they could see it too.

I bet things were a good deal less exciting in the cockpit, though. I bet it was hot and squashed in there, and if we’re honest, a bit frightening as well.

Automobili Lamborghini confirms commitment to China, with Shanghai motor show and new showroom opening in Chengdu.

Automobili Lamborghini launched its new Murciélago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce to the Chinese market today at Shanghai motor show. The Italian marque’s Shanghai motor show presence follows the official opening on Friday 17 April of Lamborghini’s fourth showroom in China.

“China becomes an always more important market for Lamborghini, even in light of a challenging worldwide economic situation that affects everybody,” said Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann. “China is one of the largest potential markets for our company: Lamborghini and its dealer partners benefit from an established and respected luxury brand, in this region as in our other markets, and we continue to invest in our customers and the marque’s future via appropriate strategic growth.”

The new Chengdu showroom in Sichuan Province has been opened by Chengdu Sanhe Enterprise Group Co. Ltd at its extensive Sanhe Group premises on the Singapore Industrial Park. “For Chengdu as well as for Sanhe Group this investment creates a significant automotive development, and we are delighted to represent this fascinating brand,” said Sanhe Group Chairman Zongmin Huang.

“Our development strategy within China has been consistent, including the establishment of Automobili Lamborghini China in 2008,” confirms Stephan Winkelmann. “As part of our plan to enlarge our dealer network coverage, the Chengdu opening represents a pivotal step and, similarly, we consider the Shanghai show an opportunity to show new Lamborghini models to one of our most significant potential markets.“

In 2008 Automobili Lamborghini delivered 72 cars in mainland China compared to 28 units in 2007, with a growth rate of 157%. Automobili Lamborghini currently has four operating dealers in mainland China, located in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu, and one is also operating in Hong Kong. Three other dealers will be opened in 2009: one in Hangzhou, one in Xiamen and one in Shenzhen.
