The current champion vs. the record champion: Within the next few months VfL Wolfsburg and FC Bayern München will meet for a sporting duel in Wolfsburg. For a change, the teams will not only be playing for victory but, first and foremost, for a good cause: All the proceeds of the friendship match will go to the ‘We want to help – A heart for children’ campaign and benefit the victims of the earthquake catastrophe in Haiti.
A total of 1 million euros will thus be collected for the earthquake victims of the Caribbean state, guaranteed by Volkswagen and Audi, the two long-standing partners of the two clubs. The companies will donate the difference between the proceeds of the top-caliber game and the 1-million euro pledge.
‘We have all seen the horrible pictures from Haiti. We were deeply shocked, and it was immediately clear that we would help,’ says Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Management Board of the Volkswagen Group. ‘It is our duty and our responsibility to give financial assistance to the people in Haiti,’ adds Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Management Board of AUDI AG.
‘There are moments when championship points or goal scorers’ charts simply do not take center stage,’ says Bayern striker Miroslav Klose. And Wolfsburg’s defender Marcel Schäfer adds, ‘In our team, it was also immediately clear that we wanted to help. So, we are happy that Bayern and we with their respective partners make it possible to support this cause with this game.’ Both national players announced the benefit match last night during a live broadcast on ZDF, a German public TV channel.
