Spy Shots: Panamera Testing in Southern California

I haven’t posted much about the Porsche Panamera, nor do I post much about spyshots. In this case, I came across a new blog devoted to the Porsche brand and decided to link back..

I’m still not fond of this design. I know it’s all “hidden” behind its disguise but it doesn’t sing Porsche to me. I do see the 928/944 throwback in its lines but it is no Aston Martin or Maserati in terms of sleekness etc.

time will tell..

Spy Shots: Panamera Testing in Southern California

Fast Lane Daily viewer “mcshin” snapped this picture of the Panamera being tested in Marina Del Ray, California. This photo offers the clearest view yet of the side and the rear profile. There is still some camouflage on the car, but it is shaping up a little better than I first thought.

Volkswagen and Apple = iCar?

This one has been flyin across the www! I’m not sure what to think of it. If anything it would be a convergance of stuff on the inside. We’ve seen the news about Google and VW interfaces. We know Apple and Google have been scratchin each others backs these days.

Everyone and their grandmother makes and iPod HU (Kenwood, Alpine etc) , adapters from Belkin etc., so I think it would be a seamless intergration of the iPhone, iPod, MacBook or mini.. maybe a version OSX that runs the cars diagnostics. Who knows.

Apple does not need to enter VW’s auto designs. However, the new iMac is damn nice and goes quite well with my New Beetle!

According to a popular Apple rumors site, AppleInsider.

It’s rumored that VW chief executive Martin Winterkorn sat down with Steve Jobs recently to discuss the possibility of a new VW that would “include several Apple tie-ins” in an attempt to target a younger market.

I’m not going to get my hopes up. AppleInsider says that “Readers may want to take this one with a bag of rock salt”, and I’d have to heartily agree on that. But if Apple where to team up with an automaker, seemingly like minded VW might make the best fit. No matter what, any dealings with Steve Jobs and/or Apple can do nothing but good for VW, as it’s been noted several times that they struggle to understand the American market. Working Jobs, who seems to be a modern day King Midus, could help VW speak our language.

New Volkswagen Formula 3 engine ready for first race

Ready for running its first race: The new Formula 3 engine from Volkswagen will celebrate its racing début during the DTM weekend on the Nürburgring (31 Aug -02 Sep).

For its comeback as an engine supplier, Volkswagen initially equips three vehicles in the Formula 3 Euro Series. Maximilian Götz from Uffenheim (Germany) and Jonathan Summerton from the United States contest the series for the Italian Team RC Motorsport, while Marco Holzer from Augsburg (Germany) competes for AM Holzer Rennsport, using the new two-litre engine delivering about 210 hp of the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer.

Volkswagen Formula 3 engine

“The new Formula 3 engine from Volkswagen has completed many hours of rig testing and reeled off plenty of test kilometres on the track. Now it’s time to test it in direct competition,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “The first races are intended to help us assess where we stand and to give us new information we can use in the unit’s evolution for the coming season.”

The new Formula 3 powerplant is based on a two-litre engine that delivers 150 hp in the production version, which is available for various models of the Volkswagen Group. With its high content of light-metal materials, robust design and compact build, the four-cylinder powerplant possesses a wealth of favourable prerequisites for use in Formula racing.

A large part of the track tests with the new engine was handled by Jonathan Summerton. “Power and performance of the Volkswagen engine are already at a high level. I’m eager to see where we stand compared with the competition,” said the 19-year-old from Florida, who celebrated a victory in the Formula 3 Euro Series last year and represented the USA in the A1 GP series in winter.

Prior to the start of the race weekend at the Nürburgring an official test day with three hours of additional track time will be on Thursday’s agenda. Maximilian Götz: “The possibility to test suits us well because it allows us to work out the optimal set-up for our car without being pressured by time,” commented the 21-year-old from Franconia who, like Summerton, has ample experience in Formula 3 and is a new member of Team RC Motorsport. Marco Holzer, on the other hand, competes with his previous team, directed by father Ronald. “The collaboration with Volkswagen is a major step forwards for us,” said the 19-year-old Marco Holzer.

A completely quick New Beetle

OH SHIZ! This is hot! I wasn’t planning on another New Beetle but shiat this new design is incredible.

Now if your reading, I posted my thoughts on the new designs popping up and that a “Ragster” looking design was next up. Well this is it! Not completely as aggressive, but the line cues are there. From the nose intakes to the “chopped” roof line. I’d love to see how the non-beetle VW fans out there take this. Offer with a strong engine option and make it handle. I’d say this is a bit late but well worth the wait. Right now this is on target for next gen as it retains the original New Beetle aesthetic!

VW is on it!

New_Beetle_2009_cab

At the end of of 2009 starts the second generation of the new Beetle on basis new gulf VI. the beginning makes the Cabrio, the closed version follows one year later.

By George Kacher it runs and runs and runs. Do you remember? Thus VOLKSWAGENrecruited into the 60ern for the tail engine beetle, from which to 2003 21.5 million pieces were produced. But develops in the meantime alsothe 1998 presented new Beetle to the success car: Recently the einmillionste copy was delivered. Reason of enough, in order to begin in time with the development of the successor. Ex Volkswagen boss Wolfgang Bernhard wanted to carry out a minimum program with the car and to use from cost reasons the old gulf platform. Martin winter grain, the new gentleman in the house, sets against it on current technology. Therefore the next new Beetle is based on the platformgulf of the VI, which does not differ however from the predecessor seriously.

Also with the organization of the product program itself the two Top managers would probably have become hardly united. Originally was remembered to place a complete new Beetle family on the wheels. In the closer choice last an optically daring many purpose combination and a four-door sedan were to, at which at least the beetle taxi drivers in Mexico town center would have had their bright joy. Even a Dune Buggy, a jeep and smallPick UP were in the drawers of the designers. The new crew tilted these variants however likewise like the sport combination on trade wind basis and the Crossoverderived from the AUDI A6. Instead it will give that to new Beetle again only as Zweitürer.

Volkswagen at the IAA 2007

THIS IS HUGE! The City Expert debut prototype! Flat-four “Boxster” engine! Plus a total of 8 world premieres! DAMN!

I’m stoked to “see what’s driving tomorrow”. People doubt VW and the future but I will say one thing here, VW is offering or has in it’s back pocket some strong “options”. Granted some are only offered in Europe, but thats business. With the US Dollar where it’s at, who knows. This crap corn ethanol options from our American brands just plain blows!

IAA is a bit away so I’m sure images and more news will develop. Keep your eyes on oneighturbo for all your updates!

Volkswagen Tiguan

Marketing campaign with eight world premieres
SUV: World premiere of an agile Tiguan

Prototype: World premiere of a slick City Expert
BlueMotion: Six new models at a stroke

Wolfsburg, 01 August 2007 - Volkswagen will present its widest product range of all time at the International Automobile Exhibition (IAA) in Frankfurt (13th to 23rdrd September). Europe’s no. 1 will be presenting over fifty models on view in Hall 3.0 – eight of them world premieres. One of the highlights: the Tiguan – an entirely new generation of SUV developed to complement the Touareg. And if all that’s not enough: Volkswagen will respond to the official motto of this year’s IAA – “see what’s driving tomorrow” – with a prototype. The heart of this sensationally flexible City Expert will beat where the flat-four “Boxer” engine once did in the Beetle. When the gates open at the IAA, six new BlueMotion models will also make their debut. From 2008 onward Volkswagen will offer nine vehicles under the BlueMotion label.

Volkswagen will welcome visitors to the IAA in an exposition area of 9,000 square metres. The centrepiece of that will be the Tiguan. It is the world’s first production model exclusively equipped with supercharged engines. It offers two particular advantages: lower fuel consumption and still fun to drive. Also new: the remarkably quiet four-cylinder Diesel engine with common-rail injection. The two new TDIs produce 103 kW/140 PS and 125 kW/170 PS respectively. Both engines already conform to the Euro 5 exhaust standards that will be introduced in 2009. You will be able to “see what’s driving tomorrow” here and now.

Moreover, Volkswagen will unveil six new BlueMotion models at the same time. Therefore, in the course of 2008, there will be at least nine BlueMotion models available. The Volkswagen BlueMotion environmental label will certainly become a byword for effective environmental protection. The versions already available – the Polo BlueMotion (3.8 litres of Diesel consumed per 100 km and 99 g/km CO2) and Passat BlueMotion (5.1 litres of Diesel consumed per 100 km and 136 g/km CO2) – have already redefined the standards of economy in their respective classes.

The Volkswagen press conference will be held on 11th September at 11.00 a.m. in Hall 3.0, on the Volkswagen stand. Dr. Martin Winterkorn will present the new Tiguan there, as well as the prototype of a future compact model.

Beetle’s Future?

Very interesting article regarding the plant in Puebla, Mexico. As I reported yesterday, New Beetle renders are popping up and being reported as next -gen 2010 designs. The Motor Trend article seems pretty sure of it’s claims.

Now, regarding the question within Auto Week’s article, there is a hush within Volkswagen about the future, that they are not killing it off in the short term and that a successor is being talked about!

I am looking forward to seeing how this materializes! The drawings look great!

VW New Beetle Mexico plant

VW’s Mexican operations grow strong, but plans for retro-car uncertain

PUEBLA, Mexico - The CEO of Volkswagen AG’s rapidly expanding Mexican affiliate says the unit will be profitable this year after a break-even 2006.

“There was a $2 billion investment program between 2002 and 2006,” CEO Otto Lindner said in an interview this month. “This year and next year will be profitable.”

The key reasons for the expected black ink: big boosts in production and efficiency.

“Cost levels will be 30 percent lower in 2008 than in 2005,” Lindner said.

With the euro at all-time highs against the dollar, VW will boost production to 400,000 vehicles from 348,000 in 2006 and 301,000 in 2005. The Puebla plant makes Jettas, Boras, Golfs and New Beetles, along with medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

For all of North America, VW reported an operating loss of 607 million euros, or about $806.5 million, in 2006.

Return of the Rear-engine Volkswagen

There is a good amount of chatter out there regarding render’s of the New Beetle for 2010 (which we reported on back in February).. even talk of a near “Ragster” look soon. 2008 changes/additions do not show any hint’s towards a future of new looks either.

The rear-engine Volkswagen is coming back. Sources deep inside VW’s headquarters have indicated that the company currently is working on a rump-motored, water-cooled small car, one that mimics the original Beetle in both layout and purpose.

Here’s what we know so far: Volkswagen’s reinvention of its iconic people’s car will have its engine situated on top of the transaxle and a radiator in the nose. Three wheelbase options and two body styles will be offered worldwide, but only two variations will come to the United States: a 130-inch-long Beetle reincarnation aimed at the Smart ForTwo and a no-frills, four-door notchback likely to be marketed as a smaller, cheaper Jetta. Pricing will be in the $10,000-to-$14,000 range.

6 New Car Technologies in Your Not-So-Distant Future

Popular Mechanics has a great article on some of Volkswagen’s future tech. Electronic Sun Visor, Family Tech, Traffic Decongestion, Hands-off Doze Control, Cleaner Fuel and Future Powerplants. It’s a 6 pager so head on over to read all.

Volkswagen recently did what most automakers do not: It lifted the veil and let us inside German test facilities for a hands-on look at its tech development process—front-row seats at technical seminars, prototype test drives and more. From nav systems for the kids to cruise control for drowsy driving to cleaner fuel conversions, here’s what’s on the horizon.

First pictures: This is the new Tiguan

Very nice. Would love to trade in the CR-V on one! A TDI here in the states would rock! Owell, guess I can try to convince the wife.

- Statement: new Volkswagen SUV with powerful design
- Borderliner: predestined for the street, in top form for off-road

VW 2008 Tiguan

With the first pictures of the new Tiguan Volkswagen is starting the countdown for the debut of it’s 14th model series. The Sports Utility Vehicle – SUV for short – will be presented to the public for the first time in September as part of the International Motor Show (IAA in Frankfurt). A combination of power and elegance characterizes the design of the new Tiguan. It was conceived as a borderliner between the urban world and endless landscapes, between business and leisure time. The Tiguan is a multitalent with driving characteristics that are just as agile as they are comfortable, high utility value and groundbreaking technologies.

VW 2008 Tiguan

Like the Touareg, the second Volkswagen SUV also presents a self-confident design. Shaping the front of the new Tiguan are the sexy proportions that Volkswagen first introduced with the Concept A Study that garnered worldwide attention – a crossover of a coupe and SUV. On the sides an elongated and powerfully modulated silhouette spans between the extended wheel arches with a – typical Volkswagen – unmistakable C-pillar. A very short overhang characterizes the steep rear end. Also significant are the front headlights and rear lights with matching shapes.

VW 2008 Tiguan

First facts on Tiguan engines: Volkswagen will offer the SUV – and this for the first time worldwide – exclusively with turbocharged direct injection engines. This “high-performance turbocharging” significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions, yet immensely increases dynamics and driving fun.

Overall there are three TSI and two TDI engines. Of these the completely new developments are the extremely quiet TDIs with common rail fuel injection. They achieve 103 kW / 140 hp and 125 kW / 170 hp and at 1,750 rpm already output 320 Nm or 350 Nm in four-wheel drive. Both TDIs already meet the limits of the Euro-5 standard first coming into effect in 2009.

Also getting to the point powerfully, economically and cleanly are the turbocharged direct injection gasoline engines in the performance levels 110 kW / 150 hp, 125 kW / 170 hp and 147 kW / 200 hp. New to the Volkswagen program are the 150 hp and 170 hp versions. A glance at the torque values makes one sense that the TSIs are very high torque. The 150-hp TSI already develops a self-assured 240 Nm (from 1,750 rpm). In the 170 hp and 200 hp performance range it is 280 Nm (from 1,800 rpm each).

“Tiguan Base” on the internet shows just how big the interest is in the new Tiguan. Visitors to www.tiguan-base.com can log in to the virtual world of the Tiguan. The development stages of the new SUV are presented in photos, films and facts. Within just 15 weeks – and this is sensational – more than one million people have made use of it worldwide. It looks as though the Tiguan is developing into an exciting chapter in the history of the automobile.
