A race winner from seasons past is to return to the Volkswagen Racing Cup next weekend (16/17 August) when the Hankook-backed championship swings into Silverstone for the penultimate meeting of the season.
The returnee is Steve Walker, who was an outright race winner in 2002 in a Golf VR6 and claimed second in the overall championship. He last competed in the Volkswagen Racing Cup in ‘04 but believes the time is right for a return: “I’ve done a lot of club events in recent years and decided it was time to try the Volkswagen Racing Cup again. The championship looks good, is professional and my Golf is going well thanks to a recent engine overhaul. We thought we’d give it a try and if everything goes well I’ll be back for a full-season attack next year, possibly with my son-in-law, Daniel Crossley, in a second car.” Continue reading ‘Volkswagen Racing Cup: Race winner Steve Walker back to the Cup’

Joe Fulbrook rocketed into the lead of the Volkswagen Racing Cup today thanks to twin wins at Snetterton at the wheel of his turbocharged Bora. Joe took the first of them on the final lap after shooting to the front of a four-car fight, and then had the second win drop almost in his lap when leader Jamie Perry struck car trouble almost within sight of the flag. The Jetta TSI Sport made its bow at the Autosport International racing car show at Birmingham’s NEC, centre stage on the British Racing and Sports Car Club stand. The new machine will make its race debut on Easter Monday (24 March) in the opening round of the Hankook-backed Volkswagen Racing Cup, at Oulton Park.
In road-going form the Jetta’s 1.4-litre, 16-valve engine produces 170 PS but the engineers at Volkswagen Racing UK, with the help of their technology partners at Superchips, Milltek Sport and Turbo Dynamics, have boosted this to 230 PS.
The TSI power unit was proven in competition last season under the bonnet of a Golf; Volkswagen Racing UK’s Melissa Wright believes that the Jetta TSI is a potential race winner: ‘We learned a lot about the engine during the course of 2007 and we have incorporated that knowledge into the new installation,’ she said. ‘In the right hands and with some development mileage under it, the new car will be a front-runner, I am sure.’
