Engine talk with DTM driver Martin Tomczyk

Audi factory driver Martin Tomczyk devoted some time at Zandvoort to junior drivers, giving the contenders of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup an in-depth look behind the scenes of the DTM.

Engine talk with DTM driver Martin Tomczyk

How many engines can you use per season? What does your race weekend look like? How important are the tyres? How many buttons does a DTM steering wheel have? – these and numerous other questions asked by the Polo Cup participants were answered by Martin Tomczyk during an extensive pitlane visit at Zandvoort. In addition, the young racers were given the chance to take a really good look at the DTM-Audi that was presented to them without the bonnet and doors, close enough to touch.

Despite the big differences in technology – the Audi A4 DTM delivering about 470 hp is a pure prototype with a carbon fibre body, while the 150-hp Cup Polo is a touring car based on the production version – the “engine talk” revealed that there are indeed a number of parallels between the professional league and the entry-level series: For example, proper handling of the Dunlop tyres is equally important in the Polo Cup and the DTM and the big stars are required to stick to a precise schedule on race weekends – a lesson the talented youngsters in the Polo Cup learn early on as well.

Volkswagen returns to Formula 3

Wow! Pretty cool news from Volkswagen. This is one piece of history I had no idea about. Scroll down and check the list of past drivers!

Formula 3 comeback for Volkswagen

Formula 3 comeback for Volkswagen: The German automobile manufacturer aims to continue its successful tradition as engine supplier in the talent school of formula racing with a newly developed two-litre engine.

Volkswagen celebrated 92 wins alone in the German Formula 3 Championship between 1979 and 1991, and claimed numerous other wins on the international stage. The new power unit will debut at the seventh round of the Formula 3 Euroseries at the Nürburgring between 31 August and 2 September 2007.

“Volkswagen won innumerable races and championships in Formula 3 during the nineteen-eighties and at the beginning of the nineteen-nineties and, as a result, proved impressively the performance of its power units,” explains Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of the Volkswagen Brand with responsibility for Development. “Even today, Formula 3 is an excellent platform to present production-based engine technologies. We want to take on this demanding competition.”

This weekends racing!

There is a ton of VAG racing going on this weekend! Gotta love it esp. with an injured lower back.

Where to start..

Utah Grand Prix
We will have both the ALMS and Speed World Challenge racing here.

Audi will be looking to take a P1 win but I think more important is the overall in ALMS. The last few races have been tough as they’ve been on street courses. We now enter the 4.5m circuit of Miller Motorsports Park, which is getting great reviews by the drivers since its introduction last year. It also has 3,500ft of straightwaway and 24 turns.

Audi will also be looking to the STaSIS crew to lead them to victory in the Speed Touring Car class. Practice hasn’t been great but Chip Herr was in 4th in Session 1. We have not seen these guys race since Sebring.

We will also be keepin an eye on the Porsche RS Spyders as well as the new boys, Acura.

GT2: This will be the other one to watch. Great battle going on with the Ferrari and Porsches!

GT1 - snore. ALMS really needs to get some more brands racing. Two ‘vettes going head to head is lame!

DTM: EuroSpeedway
The 3rd round of the DTM series takes place at Eurospeedway Lausitz. Mattias took Audi to 1 place in 2004 and 2005 (1 out of 2 race that year).

Practice has not looked to god for Audi but it is practice..

ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup
I have been slacking on my Cup coverage but it is a great series this year and follows the DTM series schedule.

WTCC:
Again, I’ve been late on my WTCC coverage featuring the SEAT’s.

Grand Am:
I’m not seeing Bildon on the entry list and ther site says tent. so it’s good to say they are not racing this weekend.

This weekend is huge for VW & Audi racing news!

That’s right, we have finally reached the start of DTM 2007! Man, I am stoked! I will be reporting all weekend and posting images to my DTM flickr gallery.

Along with the DTM, VW will also be launching the ADAC VW Polo Cup. I will also have updates to that and images here.

The Audi R10 TDI will also be coming back after it’s overall loss in last weekends race at Long Beach. I’ve been swamped with the 9-5′r that I didn’t get much follow up to that race. ALMS is racing at Houston this weekend on the third street course. This weekend they will be going back to the 2:45hr duration. I will have all images posted to my ALMS flickr gallery. This wil also include some GT2 images!

Porsche will be coming off their sweep at Long Beach not only in the LMP2 class but overall! The RS Spyder has found its legs I think. I love the new Acuras, visually, but Porsche owns!

One more from ALMS will be some updates on the GT2 class. It’s such a dynamic and dramatic class and my favorite team, Flying Lizard is doing quite well giving the new Ferarri entries a run for the top!

And you thought I was done… nope. BTCC is racing this weekend at Rockingham. Yes this means Jason Plato will be woring to keep his lead and SEAT at the top!

and last but least.. Volkswagen Racing Cup will be at it this weekend at Donington Park! Again, keep up with the news here and the gallery here.

Polo Cup juniors train in sports promotion group

Michael Greis, Tobias Angerer, Susi Erdmann – these are three of the many world-class winter athletes from the German military’s sports promotion group in Bischofswiesen near Berchtesgaden (Bavaria).

Now the young guns from the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup made their training début in the acclaimed performance centre at “Königssee” lake, which is directed by the two-time Bob Olympic Winner and multiple World and European Champion Christoph Langen. With a three-day fitness training course comprising several units, from the professional lactate test, to rowing and jogging, the juniors prepared themselves for the new season. The first of ten races for the 2007 Polo Cup they will be contesting at Hockenheim on 22 April.

Polo Cup juniors train in sports promotion group

“In motorsport, physical fitness is definitely a factor of success. Only someone who is in top shape from the starting signal through to the chequered flag has the ability to truly drive a racing car at the limit over the entire distance,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “The fitness course has a firm place in our preparation for the Polo Cup season. Christoph Langen’s team offered a first-class training programme.”

The Polo Cup contenders, who are between the ages of 16 and 24, at first found themselves in unusual surroundings: The soldier guarding the gate expected them to report for duty at “Jäger-Kaserne”. After “making their beds” and having lunch at the team quarters, the serious part of the programme started. For the lactate test, the drivers had to complete three-minute running intervals, interrupted by the taking of blood. The running speed was increased for each session until every participant had reached their performance limit. “The lactate test is very well suited to determining an individual’s performance capacity, to which everyone can then adapt their personal training programme,” said Benedikt große Darrelmann, Volkswagen Chief Instructor in the Polo Cup, who is going to be a doctor soon. In addition, there were fitness sessions, runs through the woods, rowing, mountain bike and football on the agenda. The programme was directed by athletic trainer Sven Rühr, a former Bob World Champion on Christoph Langen’s team, and Manuel Machata, Bob Junior World Champion in 2006.

The preparation for the new season will continue on 04/05 April. During the introductory course at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, a programme of theoretical units as well as practical instruction in the form of test drives is awaiting the juniors. After the season opener at Hockenheim, two races will take place, respectively, at Oschersleben (05/06 May) and the EuroSpeedway Lausitz (19/20 May). Afterwards, the juniors’ series will move the Norisring in Nuremberg (24 June) and Zandvoort, the Netherlands (29 July), before racing two circuits on the current Formula 1 calendar: Nürburgring (02 September) and Barcelona, Spain (23 September). For the final round, the Polo Cup will return to Hockenheim (14 October).

Volkswagen is searching the quickest apprentice

It’s hard to tell from the shot but could be GTI Racer but I can’t find anything close to resembling that UI. Maybe Forza or Toca since it’s made by Codemasters.

Racers wanted: Under the patronage of Dr Horst Neumann, Member of the Board for Human Resources of Volkswagen AG, and Bernd Osterloh, Chairman of the Joint and Corporate Works Council of Volkswagen AG, Volkswagen Coaching and Volkswagen Motorsport are launching a competition targeting young people employed as apprentices with Volkswagen.

The winner of “ProTalent” will receive a slot as a contender in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup 2007, which features ten races.

Commenting on the idea behind “ProTalent”, the Managing Director of Volkswagen Coaching, Jürgen Haase, said: “Motorsport is an exciting subject for young people. That is why our competition aims to bring together our apprentices who have a keen interest in technology with Volkswagen’s racing activities.” Volkswagen Motorsport supports the selection of the winner and will accompany them through their first racing season. “We’re convinced that our pool of apprentices includes talent just waiting to be discovered. Our joint activity provides them with a unique opportunity,” emphasized Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. Wolfgang Dressler, Managing Director at Volkswagen Motorsport, added: “The collaboration between Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen Coaching goes beyong the ProTalent campaign. We have agreed to employ apprentices in various areas of motorsport in the future.”

The competition is open to all apprentices at the Wolfsburg, Braunschweig, Salzgitter, Hannover, Kassel and Emden plants aged 16 to 24. The selection process will take place in several stages. Until 24 March, driving simulators, on which every competitor will complete two rounds, will be set up at each plant. The quickest 100 will then participate in a competition on a kart track. The top 20 will then change from the kart to the cockpit of a racing car, under the guidance of instructors from Volkswagen Motorsport. On 22 April, the winner will contest their first race in the Polo Cup at Hockenheim. This successful racing series for young talent organized by ADAC and Volkswagen is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2007.

Joint forces

Motorsport is team sport – this frequently quoted statement applies to fielding the Race Touareg in the Dakar Rally as well as to pit stops in Formula 1.

But successful teamwork is of crucial importance at a much earlier stage, as the creation of the new racing version of the Polo GTI shows: It is being developed in Germany, built in Spain and fielded in Denmark.

“Volkswagen is represented around the globe with its cars. That’s why we’re pursuing an international strategy with our one-make cup as well,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. In line with this approach, not only the road-going Polo is being offered with variuous engines to suit customer wishes. In the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup, a 2-litre, 150-hp FSI engine is used as a powerplant, while in Turkey quick ladies rely on 130 hp delivered by a TDI unit.

A new addition to the programme: The powerful 180-hp turbo engine from the Polo GTI Cup Edition for the Danish series launched by the organisers of the Danish Touring Car Championship. “The 25 new Racing Polo cars are produced in Pamplona where the road cars are being built as well,” said Hans Marschall, Technical Project Manager at Volkswagen Motorsport. “Due to the close collaboration with the plant and suppliers a major portion of the car is already assembled on the line, where special parts for the racing version can be installed as well.” This simplifies the assembly process and reduces costs. “Entering professional racing has to remain an affordable proposition,” Kris Nissen stressed.

Danish Champ Elgaard wins – Johansson’s winning streak ends

The Danish Touring Car Champion is victorious in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup: Guest entrant Casper Elgaard won the seventh round of the Polo Cup – marked by lots of duels – at the Nürburgring.

After the Dane had been fighting hard for the top position with Cup leader Jimmy Johansson as early as in the qualifying session, the seasoned racer overtook the Swedish talent in the race’s eighth lap to defend the lead all the way to the finish. As the best German driver, 18-year-old Niclas Kentenich from Neuss took the third position on the podium. Whereas Casper Elgaard put a clear distance between himself and his father, Peter - the former DTM driver - (19th place), the second father-son duel had a close outcome: It wasn’t until the eleventh lap that the former DTM Champion Kurt Thiim overtook his 17-year-old son, Nicki, to finish fifth behind the Swede Patrik Olsson.

“This was outstanding motorsport with many tough but fair duels. My thanks to our guest entrants and compliments to our young drivers,” praised Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “Casper Elgaard and Kurt Thiim are top-class professional racers. The fact that our drivers are able to fight with them on a par is evidence of the high level of driving skills and enormous balance found in the Polo Cup.”
