ALMS: Flying Lizard Qualifies 3rd, 5th and 7th in GT2 for Mid-OhioGotta love it, two Porshe 911 GT3 RSR’s leading two Ferrari F430’s

The Flying Lizard No. 45, 46 and 44 Porsches qualified third, fifth and seventh, respectively, in GT2 for tomorrow’s Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio, the sixth of eleven races in the 2008 ALMS season.

All three Lizard Porsches headed out at the start of the 20-minute qualifying session, with Wolf Henzler behind the wheel of the No. 45, Patrick Pilet in the No. 46 and Lonnie Pechnik in the No. 44. Scorching temperatures in the 90’s made for a very hot qualifying session on the 2.25-mile circuit, with track temperatures nearing 115 degrees.

In the No. 45, Wolf’s fastest time of 1:20.226 was just two-hundreths of a second off of the pole sitter, Jaime Melo in the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari.

Crew chief and co-technical director Tommy Sadler commented on the session, “We still have the morning warmup tomorrow to make some changes and finalize the setups, but in general today’s results are a solid starting point for the team. It’s great to see Risi back at the front of the grid and we look forward to giving them a good race tomorrow.”

ALMS: Flying Lizard Back in U.S. for Lime Rock

The Flying Lizard squad returns to U.S.-based racing this week, after a five-week break from the ALMS season. During the break, the Flying Lizard No. 80 Porsche completed the grueling 24 Heures du Mans in Le Mans, France, finishing sixth in GT2. Back to their ALMS three-car effort, Flying Lizard heads to the East Coast today for the Northeast Grand Prix at the newly-repaved 1.51-mile Lime Rock Park. Flying Lizard is currently leading in both the ALMS team and drivers’ GT2 championships, having won two races so far this season (Sebring and the Utah Grand Prix), and secured seven of twelve possible podium spots. 24 Hours of Le Mans: Porsche GT2 report

Even though the coverage hardly focused on the GT2 class, it was one of the best as well. We almost died in our seats when the crash between Patrick Long and Seth Neiman happened. Two hours into the race! We won’t point fingers here, its just a shame that these two Porsches more than likely would have won this race. Period.

The teams in the near-standard GT2 class also took off into the race with their Porsche 911 GT3 RSR showing great promise. In qualifying, the Porsche works driver Patrick Long (USA) had undercut the magical four-minute mark with a lap time of 3:58.152 minutes in the sports car category for the first time and with his German works driver team mate Wolf Henzler, claimed a double pole position result. 24 Hours of Le Mans: Porsche customer teams dominate qualifying

The qualifying sessions were a blast to listen to yesterday and today. If you fortunate enough to listen in and hear the moment when Patrick Long went 3:58, you probably got the same chills we did! Joerg Bergmeister and the #80 Flying Lizard Motorsport 911 GT3 RSR had pole until those moments. He was very anxious to break the 4:00 mark but team orders thought differently.
