Volkswagen starts new season with evolution of Formula 3 engine

With an evolution of the engine, two experienced racing teams and eight young drivers from six nations, Volkswagen starts to the new Formula 3 Euro Series 2008.

Volkswagen starts new season with evolution of Formula 3 engine

The DTM weekend at Hockenheim from 11 to 13 April marks the season opener of the world’s most important junior league, which encompasses ten race weekends in Europe. Last year Volkswagen returned to Formula 3 as an engine supplier in four test events and will contest all of the rounds of the international championship for the first time in 2008.

“Over the past weeks and months Volkswagen carefully prepared for the first complete season in the Formula 3 Euro Series. We augmented our line-up, signed a lot of promising young talent and continued developing our two-litre engine with intensive, detailed work,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “The opening race at Hockenheim is the first real acid test for the numerous pieces of the puzzle which have to fit together perfectly in order to be successful. The air in Formula 3 is extremely thin, that’s why the team, the driver, the chassis and the engine have to interact perfectly. Our goal for the 2008 season is to score points regularly and to manage the leap onto the winners’ podium.” Continue reading ‘Volkswagen starts new season with evolution of Formula 3 engine’

Cong Fu Cheng completes Volkswagen’s Formula 3 line-up

Cong Fu Cheng completes Volkswagen’s Formula 3 line-up Eight drivers from six nations – Volkswagen’s international line-up for the Formula 3 Euro Series is complete. The signing of Cong Fu Cheng from China concludes Volkswagen’s driver selection process.

In the Europe-wide championship the 23-year-old Cheng will be piloting a Dallara F308 Volkswagen powered by a two-litre engine from Wolfsburg that delivers about 210 hp.

As engine supplier Volkswagen equips a total of eight junior racers: Maximilian Götz (Germany) and Jens Klingmann (Germany) as well as Cong Fu Cheng (China) and Martin Plowman (Great Britain) will compete for the Italian Team RC Motorsport, for the French Signature squad, the Red Bull juniors Stefano Coletti (Monaco) and Jean Karl Vernay (France) as well as Franck Mailleux (France) and Eduardo Mortara (France/Italy) will contest the series.

“Cong Fu Cheng prevailed against his competitors in our evaluation course thanks to his speed and experience. He ranks among Asia’s top motorsport talent,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “This marks the completion of the line-up we’ve been shooting for. The time up to the season opener in April we will use to jointly – and carefully – prepare ourselves with the eight juniors and the two teams. After tests with the new evolution stage of our engine the drivers’ agenda will also include fitness training and team building.”

Cheng, who hails from Beijing and now lives in Oxford, U.K., looks forward to the collaboration. “I’m very happy about the opportunity to contest the Formula 3 Euro Series with support from Volkswagen,” says Cheng, who is also known as “Frankie”. “I will give everything to be successful with Volkswagen. My goal is to be able to fight for podium places as soon as possible.” Previously, the 23-year-old was contesting the British Formula 3 Championship and he is currently representing China’s colours in the A1GP racing series in which he already clinched a podium result.

After promising tests last year, 2008 will see Volkswagen participating in all the rounds of the Formula 3 Euro Series for the first time. The season of the championship that features a strong field and fierce fighting will kick off together with the DTM at Hockenheim on 12/13 April, comprising a total of 20 races on ten weekends in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Spain.

Rapid talents: Mailleux and Plowman with Volkswagen Power

vwf3_Mailleux_Plowman.jpg

Volkswagen has strengthened its 2008 Formula 3 Euro Series squad with the addition of two fast “stars of tomorrow”: Franck Mailleux from France and Briton Martin Plowman compete in the leading “star of tomorrow” formula with Volkswagen engines.

The two drivers completed their first tests at the end of 2007. The 22-year old Mailleux completes the Signature line up, and 20-year old Plowman starts for RC Motorsport. As a result, five of the eight Volkswagen powered Dallara chassis’ are filled. The season opener in the hard-fought Pan-European championship is held on 12/13 April together with the DTM at Hockenheim.

The two young talents were welcomed to the team by Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “Whoever wants to be successful in Formula 3 must bring a strong package to the grid: Team, driver, chassis and engine must be first class and fit perfectly together. Martin Plowman and Franck Mailleux are a genuine boost for our squad in the 2008 Formula 3 Euro Series.” Preparations and Volkswagen Motorsport are in full swing. “The evolution version of our two-litre engine has shown great promise on the dyno. We’ll start our circuit test programme shortly.” The 210 hp Formula 3 power plant made a promising debut in 2007.”

Franck Mailleux also has previous experience in the Formula 3 Euro Series: He celebrated one win and claimed two further podium finishes in 2007 his debut season. “Formula 3 is the best proving ground for young talent on the way to Formula 1. The demands made of drivers, teams and manufacturers are enormous. Perfect teamwork during development and at the track is decisive for success,” knows Mailleux, who is currently studying economics in England. “I’m really looking forward to the new season and working with Volkswagen and Signature.” The Monegasque Stefano Coletti, Italian Eduardo Mortara and the Frenchman Jean Karl Vernay will compete alongside Franck Mailleux for Philippe Sinault’s French team.

Martin Plowman from Tamworth (GB) will be a genuine debutant in the Formula 3 Euro Series. “Plowey” last raced in Formula Renault after years of successful karting. “Moving up to Formula 3 Euro Series is a very important step for me and I can hardly wait for the season to start,” says the jockey like Englishman. “The standard in the Euro Series is very high; teams and driver are absolutely professionals. I’ll have to learn very quickly as the engineers, circuits and car are new to me. The cooperation with Volkswagen is a golden opportunity for me.”

Cup winner van Dam debuts with Volkswagen Formula 3 engine

Debut at last race before the winter break: The Netherlander Carlo van Dam, newly crowned ATS Formula 3 Cup Champion, moves up to the Formula 3 Euro Series with Volkswagen.

At the finale of the Formula 3 Euro Series at Hockenheim (12 -14 October) Carlo van Dam will steer a Dallara F306 Volkswagen alongside Maximilian Götz (Germany) entered by the Italian team RC Motorsport, the third Dallara “powered by Volkswagen” is driven by Marco Holzer (Germany) in the AM Holzer Rennsport team. After four race weekends and eight races the finale at the Baden race track marks the end of a short season for Volkswagen following the premiere of the newly developed Formula 3 engine at the beginning of September at the Nürburgring. Afterwards, the development programme for the near 210 hp two-litre four-vale engine from Wolfsburg will be continued for 2008.

Cup winner van Dam debuts with Volkswagen Formula 3 engine

“Hockenheim is new territory for our Formula 3 engine and provides our engineers with the opportunity to collect additional experiences and knowledge. The intensive development work on our concern engine continues apace during the winter break in order to offer more Formula 3 teams a potential race winning power unit in the forthcoming year,” explains Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “We can be satisfied with the results of our test races to date – we run in the top ten at every track. We aim to continue this trend at the finale at Hockenheim.”

RC Motorsport presents a new driver for the race at Hockenheim. New to the team is Carlo van Dam, who won the ATS Formula 3 Cup this year in convincing style with nine victories in 18 races. “I’m very happy and proud to be able to make the step-up to the Formula 3 Euro Series so soon with Volkswagen. It’s a fantastic feeling to know that my performances in the German Cup have been noticed,” says the delighted 21-year old from Rotterdam who replaces Jonathan Summerton (USA) in the cockpit. van Dam celebrated victory at the wheel of a Formula 3 car at Hockenheim in April. “The pressure of competition is significantly greater in the European series,” acknowledges the Netherlander. “The team is new to me, and the track is new to the team – nevertheless, I hope that we can spring a surprise.”

“Maxi” Goetz finished in the top-ten four times for Volkswagen during the previous three race weekends and is also confident for the finale: “Hockenheim is the last chance to show what we are capable of this year. We were well on the pace up to now,” and the 21-year old is convinced that, “there is much more potential in the car, engine, team and driver. It is possible to lay the foundation for a successful race weekend with a good qualifying performance on Friday. We aim to focus our attention specifically on this.”

Marco Holzer also hopes to finish his debut season in the Formula 3 Euro Series with a good result. “My first year was filled with highs and lows, but I’ve learnt a huge amount,” summarises the 19-year old trainee vehicle mechatronic engineer. “At the finale I’d like to improve on my best performance to date which was seventh at Nuremberg, but it won’t be a cruise. Everybody is usually more motivated than normal at the last race.”
