BTCC: SEAT UK leaves BTCC with 43 wins in 150 races

SEAT UK can reflect on five highly successful seasons in the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship after winning 43 races and scoring 101 podium results in 150 races.

Having entered the series in 2004, Jason Plato and Darren Turner closed the chapter on SEAT UK’s motorsport programme by ensuring the Leon TDI was the top winning car in the 2008 BTCC campaign – with 10 race wins to its name. Nine different drivers won races in 2008, but no-one scored more than Jason Plato, who took his BTCC career total to 46 victories and 2136 points (in 276 starts) with eight wins this year. BTCC: Six thrilling years for SEAT Sport UK

Wow. Did not see this coming. SEAT sport will not race in the 2009 BTCC season and they will not continue the SEAT Cupra Championship. That’s a huge bummer! It does look like the WTCC is still a go!

BTCC: Six thrilling years for SEAT Sport UK
Here’s to 6 great years! Thanks to everyone at SEAT Sport!

Following six successful years in British motorsport, SEAT UK has decided that it will not participate in the British Touring Car Championship for the 2009 season.

This year will also mark the end of the SEAT Cupra Championship, the popular and highly-regarded one-make series that has nurtured talented drivers on their way to a place in either the BTCC or WTCC – previous SCC stars include Gordon Shedden, Rob Huff and Mat Jackson. Offering the biggest prize pot in British motorsport, this series was first run in the UK in 2003. Continue reading ‘BTCC: Six thrilling years for SEAT Sport UK’

BTCC: SEAT breaks the 100 podium barrier at Silverstone

BTCC: SEAT breaks the 100 podium barrier at Silverstone

Jason Plato led all three HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship races at Silverstone today in his SEAT Leon TDI, and his victory in the first race was SEAT Sport UK’s 100th BTCC podium result. Having given the team its first podium finish with victory in its first ever BTCC race meeting in 2004, it was appropriate that Jason’s victory – his 32nd BTCC race win for SEAT and his 46th of his career – gave the team its 100th podium. That was increased to 101 podium finishes 6.194 seconds later, when Darren Turner took the chequered flag in 3rd. Statistically, SEAT Sport UK has finished 69% of the 147 BTCC races it has contested since its debut season in 2004 on the podium. BTCC: Three out of three wins for SEAT at Knockhill

We were not able to watch the races today but great results for SEAT Sport.

BTCC: Three out of three wins for SEAT at Knockhill

SEAT Sport UK dominated the 2008 HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship meeting at Knockhill, qualifying 1st and 2nd on the grid, recording the fastest lap time in all three races, winning all three races and setting a new lap record with its Leon TDI. Having taken an unequalled seventh win of the season with victory in Rounds 22 and 23 of the series, a collision saw Jason Plato end the third and final race in Scotland in the crash barriers; which is a serious blow to his BTCC Driver title aspirations. Darren Turner qualified on pole and after a bruising opening two races scored his second win of the year with a textbook drive in Round 24. BTCC: SEAT Sport aims for olympic success at Knockhill

Jason Plato and Darren Turner will be going for gold when the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship arrives at Scotland’s National Motorsport Centre at Knockhill this weekend (August 16/17). Both SEAT Sport UK drivers have won there twice in recent years, so they hope the Leon TDI will carry them to more success in Rounds 22, 23 and 24 of the 2008 series.

The undulating 1.3 mile Knockhill track always produces great BTCC racing. Since SEAT Sport UK joined the series in 2004, eight different drivers have won the 12 BTCC races held there. Darren set a new qualifying lap record at Knockhill last year (53.007sec / 86.33mph) and won two out of the three races. Jason qualified on pole at Knockhill in 2006 and won the opening race, repeating his race winning success of 2004.

Jason and Darren qualified first and second at Knockhill in 2006, and if they do so again it will be a third straight all-SEAT Leon TDI front row, having qualified first and second at the previous two BTCC meetings at Oulton Park and Snetterton.

Jason Plato: “I’m confident we’ll go really well at Knockhill. We’ve proven that we can get the Leon TDI to work at circuits which have really important corners, and Knockhill is quite a technical circuit and needs a good chassis to win. We should be very quick out of the hairpin and up the hill with the torque of the diesel engine, and I think in the other corners we’ll be quick too. I want to get the car on pole position and I think me and Darren will have a good fight for that top spot. At this stage in the Championship, we’ve just got to go for race wins. We need Fabrizio Giovanardi to have a bad weekend, either some mechanical issues or get caught up in a tangle – but I have no control over that and to be fair I wouldn’t really want to see that happen. But if it did, we need to make sure that as a team we’re on top of our game and in a position to benefit from it. We need to go for race wins, and what will be will be.”

Darren Turner: “Knockhill was the highlight of my season last year, with pole, two wins and a solid seventh place finish in the third race. Will this year be as good with the Leon TDI? Knockhill certainly isn’t one of the fast circuits where we think the diesel package will excel, but we didn’t think Oulton Park would be either and we performed very well there. If we can perform like that in Scotland, we’ll be right up there challenging for races wins. Jason’s still got a slim chance of winning the Drivers’ title, and we need to make sure we’re in a position to benefit if Fabrizio Giovanardi has a bad weekend. If that happens at Knockhill, the Championship will look very different.”

Scott Dennis, SEAT UK Motorsport Manager: “With only nine races of the 2008 season left, success at Knockhill will be crucial if we are to keep our Championship aspirations alive. Jason currently trails Fabrizio Giovanardi by forty-four points in the Drivers’ Championship and the main priority will be for Jason to outscore him in all three races. Now that we understand the Leon TDI a little more I’m confident that we can hit the ground running on Saturday and be competitive in qualifying.”

The BTCC race weekend at Knockhill begins with two 40-minute free practice sessions on Saturday 16th August, starting at 09.30 and 12.15, followed by a 30-minute qualifying session starting at 16.00. Rounds 22, 23 and 24 of the BTCC take place on Sunday 17th August, with the three 24-lap races starting at 11.10, 13.50 and 16.30.

Uninterrupted TV coverage returns to ITV4, with live race day broadcasts from 12.30-17.30.

BTCC: Jason Plato wins Round 19 at Oulton Park

BTCC: Jason Plato wins Round 19 at Oulton Park Jason Plato became the first driver to win five races in the 2008 HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship, when he led from pole to win the first of three races at Oulton Park in his SEAT Sport UK Leon TDI.

In hot and sunny conditions (25°C air / 38°C track temperatures) and in front of a huge crowd, Jason set a new lap record (1:28.653 / 88.98mph) on the way to a convincing win – maintaining a 3.8 to 4 second lead before easing off on the 15th and final lap to win by 1.999 seconds.

Darren Turner dropped a place at the start, but was soon challenging Tom Chilton (Honda Civic) to regain 2nd place. He moved into 2nd with a good overtaking manoeuvre at Cascades, only for Chilton to hit his rear bumper and push the Leon TDI sideways as Darren turned into the left hander.

Darren did well to control the car and keep it on the asphalt, but the incident had dropped him down to 7th. With damaged rear suspension, it was difficult for Darren to recover and he eventually finished 6th.

BTCC Round 19
1. Jason Plato (SEAT Leon TDI)…22:30.779
2. Tom Chilton (Honda Civic)…22:32.778
3. Fabrizio Giovanardi (Vauxhall Vectra)…22:36.737

BTCC: Another qualifying 1-2 for SEAT Sport UK

Jason Plato and Darren Turner have qualified 1st and 2nd for the second consecutive HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship race meeting after they put their SEAT Leon TDIs on the front row of the grid for tomorrow’s first race at Oulton Park. BTCC: SEAT plans second half attack after Croft setback

BTCC: SEAT plans second half attack after Croft setback
Jason Plato leads in the rains at Pau

SEAT Sport UK is looking forward to attacking the second half of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship with all the new-found knowledge it has acquired with its Leon TDI in the first 15 races. The technical challenge of taming the diesel package has been great, yet the Leon TDI has already won three races (the first for a diesel-engined car in the 50 year history of the BTCC), scored nine podiums and achieved one pole position.
