The Jetta TDI Cup will make its first appearance in Iowa this weekend at Iowa Speedway in the fifth race of the VW Jetta TDI Cup on Saturday, September 20 at 5:30 p.m. The race will mark the beginning of a demanding schedule for the final half of the series that will have the drivers racing three consecutive weekends until the finale at Road Atlanta. The 30 young drivers will face a full day on Saturday with practice, qualifying and the race all taking place on the same day, a challenging first in this inaugural season of the clean diesel series. Halfway through the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup it is clear that the series has firmly established itself in the American motorsport scene after just four events.

The American offshoot of the “touring car school”, modelled after the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup in Germany, looks back on a successful first half of its maiden season: some 30 drivers aged 16 to 26 from the USA, Canada and Mexico delivered gripping races at the first four rounds with four different winners. The Jetta TDI Cup combines promotion of young talent at reasonable costs with innovative clean diesel technology. Next weekend (19–21 September) the fifth race will be run in Iowa. The Jetta TDI Cup may be half way through the season, but the competition is only getting started. After winning at Mosport International Raceway and consistently placing in the top six positions, David Jurca, 22, Federal Way, Wash., leads the Jetta TDI Cup series standings by a mere 7 points, but with four more races in the season the contest is still wide open. Jetta TDI Cup: DeNino Wins Pole and Finishes Fifth at Lime Rock



Having recently undergone major renovations, the track surface and facilities at Lime Rock Park were in excellent condition. Friday morning started off with a free practice session which would reveal tire problems that would set the mood for the rest of the weekend.

After the first practice session many of the Jetta TDI Cup drivers suffered blistering and delaminating tires. The Volkswagen team was outstanding and without hesitation in addressing the situation as they used all resources possible to determine what was causing this problem. I was fortunate not to have any tire issues in my practice session, and was very happy when I found out that I had the second fastest time in the session. Jetta TDI Cup: Chris Castagna wins at Lime Rock Park

Congrats to Chris Castagna and his win at Lime Rock. Mark Pombo drove himself into a second place and pole sitter, Micheal DeNino ended up rounding out the Top 5. He had a strong race and led for a good bit until slowly slipping back over the latter laps.

South Boston Driver Races Clean Diesel Vehicle to Finish Line in Connecticut

Chris Castagna, 22, South Boston, Mass., won his first race of the Jetta TDI Cup Saturday at Lime Rock Park after maintaining a lead he acquired early on in the 30-minute sprint. The race was a fierce competition from the beginning with the 30 amateur drivers testing their skills on the recently re-paved mile and a half track. Jetta TDI Cup: Michael DeNino secures pole at Lime Rock

HUGE congrats to Michael DeNino (our resident Jetta TDI Cup racer/reporter) and his first pole of the season. Not only is he on pole but he was the only driver to go under the 1:00:00 mark.

Racing starts early tomorrow and you can keep up with live timing.

Michael DeNino secures pole place at Lime Rock race of Jetta TDI Cup.

Michael DeNino, Gaitherburg, Md., secured the pole position today for Saturday’s Jetta TDI Cup race at Lime Rock Park with a best lap time of :59.977. The race, which will take place at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the historic track as part of the NASCAR Camping World Series East, marks the fourth race in the clean diesel series and the halfway point of the inaugural season. DeNino is currently ranked 15th in the series overall. Speaking at the driver debrief after qualifying was famed F1 local driver Sam Posey, who offered additional instruction and tips to the up-and-coming drivers.
