Audi has set up a new division to develop and produce a range of high-priced “e-tron” electric cars starting in 2012.
The e-tron subbrand’s first vehicle will be based on an electric sports car concept shown at the Frankfurt auto show last autumn.
Insiders said Audi also is likely to approve production of a smaller e-tron sports car concept unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January. Both cars will have an e-tron badge but also will have individual names. (continue reading…)

Today, Audi introduced another “e” vehicle to their future. Based on the original e-tron shown in Frankfurt. You could call this version its little brother. Slightly shorter but packs 204hp with an outstanding 1954tq. 204hp does not sound like much but TQ is where its at combined with a curb-weight of 2976lbs. 0-100 in 5.9sec. We are still not fond of the “e” design but it will change when production versions go on sale in 2012, we hope.

Audi is showing an uncompromising purist compact sports car with all-electric drive at the first major auto show of 2010. The Detroit showcar Audi e-tron is the name of this 3.93 meter (154.72 in) long and 1.78 meter (70.08 in) wide but just 1.22 meter (48.03 in) tall two-seater; just a few months after the debut of the Audi e-tron at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, this is now the second electric concept vehicle from the brand with the four rings. Could this be the rumored Audi R4? A cross between the Audi R8 + e-tron + VW Concept BlueSport? Auto Express has put out a few renderings of what could be the Audi R4. It is heavily borrowed from the Concept Blue Sport but thats pretty obvious as the chassis would probably be shared across brands.
With petrol versions being offered, this could become a wicked track car and an e-tron like R4 would knock the Tesla right out.

No premium manufacturer builds and sells more all-wheel-drive cars worldwide than Audi. This is borne out by figures from the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). And as the registration statistics show, Audi also sells more all-wheel-drive models in Germany than any other premium brand. From January through August, Audi produced some 190,500 vehicles with quattro drive, which means that around one third of all Audi cars are equipped with this technology. The Audi Q5, the most prominent new addition to the all-wheel model lineup, is the most successful SUV in its class worldwide – with some 63,100 units sold in the first eight months of 2009.
