Strong first season of the new GT3 sports ca
Three champion’s titles and 23 victories
Great interest by customers around the world
At the end of the 2009 motorsport season AUDI AG cannot only be pleased with the successful title defense in the DTM. The Audi R8 LMS made a convincing showing in its first racing season as well: The GT3 race sports car developed for customer sport clinched 23 victories and three champion’s titles.
The dream has come true: With a fourth place in the penultimate round of the ADAG GT Masters Christian Abt has captured the title in the hotly contested sports car series. The 42 years old Kempten showed the race at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben on Saturday not only enormous nerve, but also a fine sense of history: He won the title on the day exactly a decade after his triumph in the championship on 17 STW October 1999. It is also the first title ever for the new Audi R8 LMS, celebrated its race debut until 2009.
The penultimate race weekend of the ADAC GT Masters was successful for
Audi: Christopher Haase and Henri Moser (Phoenix Racing) won both races at the Sachsenring with a dominant lead. In the second race Christian Abt/Christopher Mies (Team ABT Sportsline) and Frank Kechele/Tim Verbergt (Argo-Racing) even secured a one-two-three win for the Audi R8 LMS. Before the finale at Oschersleben two R8 drivers – Christian Abt and Henri Moser – are leading the standings.
With a show of strength Christian Abt and Jan Seyffarth defended the leading two positions in the ADAC GT Masters after both races at the Nürburgring.
Following a retirement in Saturday’s race the experienced campaigner and youngster showed their resolve by fighting back on Sunday: Second place and thus a place at the head of the table in the hard fought sportscar series. With 56 points Abt has a two point lead ahead of his team mate and a five point lead from the toughest rivals Luca Ludwig and Marc Hennerici.
Leader of the standings Christian Abt will literally have to handle a ‘heavy load’: The Audi R8 LMS, which the former DTM star shares with youngster Jan Seyffarth, has a dry weight of 1,460 kilograms which makes it the heaviest car in the whole field. 24 vehicles will contest both races – meaning that spectators will get to see the most varied and – arguably strongest – field of contenders of the season so far.
Reiter Engineering has tested its new Lamborghini LP560 GT3 for the first time in public and the car promises to be more efficient than its victorious predecessor: More power, improved suspension geometry, refined and optimised aerodynamics and a reduction in weight are key factors for the performance increase. In addition the car scores with an innovative 2-in-1 concept.
Saturday’s ADAC GT Masters race at the EuroSpeedway ended with a one-two-three for the Audi R8 LMS. Henri Moser and ‘wild card’ Christopher Haase (Phoenix Racing) won from Christian Abt/Jan Seyffarth (Team ABT Sportsline) and Christopher Mies/Michael Outzen (Phoenix Racing). In the second race Nicolas Armindo and César Campanico (Team Rosberg) took fourth position in the best Audi R8 LMS. Abt and Seyffarth came home in tenth place. As a result, Christian Abt continues to the lead the championship by two points from Seyffarth.
Love it! Almost as if to say we have bigger fish to fry BMW (billboard spat)! Haven’t got much response on this via twitter, but the TV is showing an F1 race. It has been rumored that Audi is looking at F1 (blasphemy), however the Audi R8 does have a race breed brother that races in FIA GT3, ADAC GT Masters and the Belgian GT. These also feature Ferrari.
