Volkswagens achieve top scores in demanding US crash tests

Four Volkswagen models at once were awarded the best grade of ‘top safety pick’ in the most recent publication of the independent US safety institute, ‘Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’. The models Golf, Jetta, Passat and Eos each earned the best evaluation in their respective categories, thus winning the renowned prize for themselves. Together with this same outstanding safety award presented to the Tiguan in August, these new awards place Volkswagen among the car manufacturers with the most top safety picks. Vikswagen Eos Named a 2008 Best New Road Trip Vehicle by Kelly Blue Book’s KBB.com

Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today that the Eos has been named to kbb.com’s 2008 Top 10 Best New Road Trip Vehicles. Kelley Blue Book, the leading provider of new- and used-vehicle information, recognized that even with gas prices reaching $4 per gallon, many Americans will still hit the road for summer road trips.

The girls (and guy) on our judging panel were looking for a car that excelled in its own category, but our winner had to have a wider appeal. The Volkswagen Eos won the day.

It’s a sensible buy that feels like a treat at the same time. It’s a convertible without the potential weakness of a cloth roof. It’s practical enough to carry four, but it’s a fun car too. It’s great to drive, but not so demanding you couldn’t drive it every day.

With the Eos, Volkswagen has created a car that you can buy both because you love it, and because it makes perfect sense. At less than £24,000 it offers good value – and it’s got plenty of standard kit. The VW badge should ensure solid resale values, and we’d expect the apparent quality to run deep.

Car of the Year Results - Audi TT - oneighturbo.com We love the growl of the Audi TT’s 2.0-litre engine, and the car is satisfyingly quick off the mark. Handling fills you with confidence and a sixth gear means the TT will cruise calmly on the motorway. Sexy styling touches include the silver TT-engraved petrol cap and chrome-ringed air vents and dials on the dash.

Space isn’t a priority here, but the TT is comfortable, and visibility is good. The hatchback opens onto a generous space that’s easy to load.

Family Hold-all: Runner up
The Volkswagen Golf’s styling is conservative by comparison, but still looks smart. There’s little to fault inside the car, with enough space for a family of five, a simple dash layout, and a solid feel to the controls. Traditionally the Volkswagen badge has guaranteed good resale values, making it a sensible, if not original, option.

Executive chic: Runner up
The Audi A4 felt more compact on the road, and was easy to park, but couldn’t match the BMW for refinement. Although soon to be replaced, the Audi still feels top quality, and is extremely comfortable.

It is high summer and so it is high season for convertibles. According to a recent study by the German Federal Vehicle Registration Authority, most of them are being driven around the Starnberger See and in the Hochtaunus region.
