Delivering 180 kW (245 hp) of system performance and 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft) of torque, its 2.0 TFSI gasoline engine and electric motor ensure sporty dynamics while achieving an average fuel consumption in the normal cycle (NEDC) of under 6.9 liters per 100 km (33.60 US mpg).

During the development process, Audi focused on a high share of electrically powered driving. The sportiest hybrid SUV on the market can drive up to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) under electric power alone and covers about three kilometers locally emission-free at a speed of 60 km/h (37.28 mph). With the powerful, lightweight lithium-ion battery and many other solutions, the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro represents the state of the art.

Performance

The 2.0 TFSI and the electric motor of the Audi Q5 hybrid are mounted directly behind one another as a parallel hybrid system – a straight-line concept with impressive efficiency. Together they have a system output of 180 kW (245 hp) and a system torque of 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft). The Audi Q5 hybrid sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.1 seconds, while the interim sprint from 80 to 120 km/h (49.71 to 74.56 mph) is accomplished in fifth gear in 5.9 seconds. The propulsion ends at no less than 222 km/h (137.94 mph).

In the normal cycle, the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro consumes 6.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (33.60 US mpg) – that corresponds to a CO2 emissions level of 159 g per km (257.50 g/mile). The 75-liter (19.81-US gallon) tank yields an impressive range comparable to that of a TDI.

Drivetrain

The 2.0 TFSI in the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro has a displacement of 1984 cc. Its output is 155 kW (211 hp), with the maximum torque of 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) permanently available between 1,500 and 4,200 rpm. The four-cylinder unit combines gasoline direct injection with turbocharging. The Audi valve lift system (AVS) further increases power, torque and efficiency by switching the stroke of the exhaust valves between two stages depending on the load and rpm.

The 2.0 TFSI has been overhauled in some respects for use in the Audi Q5 hybrid. The drive of the ancillary units has been dropped, and the crankshaft bearing and fine tuning of the turbocharger have been adapted to the specific demands. A secondary air system at the cylinder head makes sure that the exhaust gas treatment cuts in particularly fast. Integrated in the engine control unit, the so-called hybrid manager controls the efficient change and smooth transitions between the operating modes.

A largely modified eight-speed tiptronic serves as the power transmission without the aid of a torque converter. Its place is taken by the disk-shaped electric motor, combined with a multi-plate clutch bathed in oil, which couples and decouples the electric motor and the TFSI. The innovative decoupler operates precisely and smoothly in any situation.

The highly comfortable and fast-shifting hybrid gear unit contributes significantly to the efficiency of the Audi Q5 hybrid – its eight gears are widely spaced. When the 2.0 TFSI is deactivated, an electric pump maintains the oil pressure in the hydraulic system to safeguard the convenient start-stop feature.

Power electronics and electric motor

The radiator tank in the engine bay houses the power electronics. The so-called pulse-controlled inverter serves as a controller between the battery, which outputs direct current, and the electric motor that operates on alternating current. Innovative technologies keep the volume and weight of the power electronics low, with cooling provided by a separate low-temperature water-filled circuit. The component includes a DC/DC converter that couples the electric consumers in the 12 V electrical system with the high-voltage network.

A permanently excited synchronous machine serves as an electric motor, as a starter and – during deceleration – as an alternator. It delivers up to 40 kW (54 hp) of power and 210 Nm (155.63 lb-ft) of torque. The electric motor is integrated in the engine’s cooling circuit.

Battery

A lithium-ion battery system, weighing merely 38 kg (83.78 lb), serves as the energy store for the electric motor of the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro. The compact unit with its 26-liter (6.87 US-gallon) capacity is positioned in a crash-safe area under the loading floor, with hardly any detriment to the luggage compartment. The battery consists of 72 cells; at 266 volts its nominal energy is 1.3 kWh and its output 39 kW.

The lithium-ion battery is cooled by air in two ways, depending on the requirement. At low-temperature load, it draws temperate air from the vehicle interior by way of a fan. If its temperature exceeds a certain limit, a separate refrigerant circuit is activated. It is coupled to the main climate control system of the vehicle and uses a separate evaporator. This efficient, active cooling mechanism is a major factor in the hybrid system’s high electric availability and sets the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro apart from many other hybrid vehicles.

Operating modes

The Audi Q5 hybrid quattro can be driven in five operating modes. Driving with the combustion engine alone, with the electric drive alone or in hybrid mode is possible, as are recuperation and boosting. At a standstill – before starting or at a traffic light, for instance – both drive sources are deactivated. In this “comfort” start-stop mode, the climate control system remains active. Once the driver releases the brake, the Q5 hybrid quattro begins coasting. It can be driven up to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) under electric power – with almost no noise or local emissions. At a constant speed of 60 km/h (37.28 mph), it has a range of 3 km – enough for many residential areas and city centers.

The driver can change between three programs using a button on the center console or the selector lever. The EV characteristic map gives priority to the electric drive in the city, the D mode controls both motors for optimal consumption, and the S mode as well as the touch control gate of the tiptronic are designed for a sporty driving style.

If the driver accelerates quickly, the combustion engine takes over and delivers traction. Now the electric motor’s main job is to power the on-board consumers and keep the accumulator battery charged. In quick acceleration, or “boosting,” the electric motor operates together with the TFSI; at full throttle in the S mode the full system output is briefly available. In such cases, the hybrid drive supplies the propulsion power of a large naturally aspirated engine, but with far more efficiency.

When the driver releases the accelerator, the electric motor acts as an alternator and recovers energy. In most situations the TFSI is then decoupled from the drive system so as not to cause any drag losses. The electricity recovered by the electric motor here and in braking is buffered in the lithium-ion battery. If the driver brakes only slightly, the electric motor performs the deceleration by itself; in more forceful braking the hydraulic braking system is simultaneously activated.

Vehicle operation

The Audi Q5 hybrid features a novel display concept, in which each of the hybrid drive’s driving modes can be experienced. The tachometer has been replaced on the instrument cluster by a “power meter,” with a needle that indicates the total system output on a scale of 0 to 100. A second scale is divided into colored segments; its green and orange segments clearly show which drive system the Q5 hybrid quattro is currently using. An additional instrument displays the charge level of the battery.

At the same time, the display of the driver information system and the large monitor of the MMI Navigation plus show the operating states and power flows in the hybrid system in elegant graphics with a three-dimensional effect. The MMI screen also displays differentiated consumption and recuperation statistics in easily understandable bar graphs.

The latest-generation MMI navigation plus is standard in the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro. The storage capacity of the hard drive is 60 GB, the menus can be selected via a state-of-the-art wizard, and the album tracks are displayed using the cover artwork. An external device such as a cell phone or player can be connected via Bluetooth, and the voice input understands town and street names in a single command. The resonant Audi sound system is also standard.

quattro drive and chassis

quattro permanent four-wheel drive reliably applies the power of both power units to the road in any situation. In the normal condition the sporty drive is emphasized at the rear; if need be, it transmits most of the power to the axle with the better traction. The sophisticated chassis includes many aluminum components for reduced weight. The Audi Q5 hybrid quattro is capable of pulling trailer loads of up to 2000 kg (4,409 lb).

The steering is based on an electromechanical system. The system is extremely efficient because it consumes no energy when driving straight ahead. The brake servo is additionally supplied by an electric vacuum pump. A complex control strategy adapts the braking to the conditions of electric driving and energy recuperation.

Exterior

Subtle visual effects on the exterior are a signature feature of the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro. The rear hatch, fenders and aluminum door sills bear hybrid badges. The radiator grill is painted a high-gloss black, and the tailpipes are trimmed in chrome. An exclusive paint finish in Arctic Silver metallic is available as an option.

The 19-inch cast aluminum wheels were specially designed for the hybrid – their ten spokes are reminiscent of turbine blades. The tires are size 235/55. Audi also offers customers 19- and 20-inch diagonal wheels, and an S line bumper is available from quattro GmbH.

The body is extraordinarily light, with the rear hatch and engine hood made of aluminum. The rigid body shell incorporates hot-shaped steel in numerous places, combining low weight with extremely high strength. Despite an extensive array of standard equipment, the Q5 hybrid quattro with its curb weight of less than 2000 kg (4,409 lb) is the lightest hybrid SUV on the world market. All of its hybrid components add less than 130 kg (286.60 lb) of extra weight.

Equipment and trim

The climate control system in the Audi Q5 hybrid is adapted to the requirements of electric driving. A high-voltage electric drive was used for the compressor. It operates on-demand, making it highly efficient. An electric auxiliary heater ensures that the cabin heats up quickly.

The Audi Q5 hybrid quattro offers virtually the same equipment as its successful sibling models – the model series leads the European market in the mid-sized SUV segment. The options also include the advanced Audi driver assistance systems.

A new feature is Internet connectivity via the optional Bluetooth car phone online. A UMTS model connects to special services from Google and the World Wide Web, allowing the car to retrieve the latest news and weather information. Through the fast connection the hybrid SUV also downloads three-dimensional satellite images and aerial photos from Google Earth. These appear in a bird’s eye view on the monitor, and the computer fills in the roads. Another high-end feature is the WLAN hotspot, which allows passenger to connect up to eight terminal devices to the Internet.

The equipment, data and prices specified in this document refer to the model range offered in Germany. In the future, up to 1,500 units of the Q5 will run off the assembly line there each year for the Indian market. The sporty SUV is the third Audi model after the A4 and A6 to be produced in India, increasing the production volume of the company with the four rings in India this year to more than 2,400 units, compared with 732 vehicles in the preceding year. Altogether Audi has produced around 2,000 cars in India since the start of production in September 2007. By 2015 up to 6,000 units will be rolling off the line each year.

Up to 1,500 Audi Q5 units per year to be built at Aurangabad plant

Frank Dreves, Board Member for Production: “With assembly of the A4, A6 and Q5, Audi is perfectly positioned for the growth in India.”

“The production of the Q5 is part of our long-term growth strategy in India,” says Frank Dreves, Audi Board Member for Production: “The Indian market for automobiles will grow very rapidly, and the Q5 is the right automobile at the right time.” Final assembly of the Audi Q5 takes place in five work cycles on two assembly lines alongside the A4 and A6 at the Volkswagen Group’s Aurangabad plant.

Last year also saw Audi significantly expand its line-up of engines for the models produced at the Aurangabad site: The Audi A6 sedan has been available with a 3.0 TFSI gasoline engine since March 2009, and before then customers could already choose between the 2.8 FSI, the 2.7 TDI and the 3.0 TDI. In July, an entry-level version of the A4 sedan with a 1.8 liter TFSI engine was introduced. It rounds out the previous engine line-up, which for the A4 also includes a 2.0 TDI and a 2.0 TFSI unit. Audi is currently offering the Q5 with a 2.0 TFSI and the 3.0 TDI engines. Further efficient engines will follow shortly.

Audi has been represented in the Indian market for four years now. In the spring of 2007, a separate sales company based in Mumbai was opened to manage all Indian market activities. In addition to the locally produced Q5, A4 and A6 models, Audi also offers its Indian customers the Audi A8, Q7 and TT, as well as the R8 supercar.

- Audi of America

Related posts:

11,111,111th Polo leaves assembly line at Volkswagen Group India

You're reading Audi begins assembly of the Q5 in India originally posted on oneighturbo.com. The Audi Q7 took third place in the luxury SUV category. The awards were presented last night in Munich.

In the survey of readers, the Audi Q5 took first place in the SUV category. Hans-Joachim Radde, Head of Marketing Germany at AUDI AG, accepted the prize and remarked: ‘The Audi Q5 combines dynamics and sportiness with a highly variable interior. It’s an all-round talent for recreation and family. And in the long run, that’s what customers in this segment want.’

The Audi Q7 also found favor among the magazine’s readers, taking third place in the luxury SUV category. ‘Sports, recreation and business – that’s what the Audi Q7 stands for. Approximately 5.9 billion euros, in other words about 80 percent of its total investment in fixed assets, will be devoted to new product development, further optimization of conventional drivelines and the development of electric and hybrid models. By 2015, the Audi brand will have enlarged its product portfolio from currently 34 to 42 models. ‘With our planned investments in new products and mobility concepts, for example electric propulsion, we are creating a basis for our company’s future growth,’ says Axel Strotbek, Member of the Board of Management for Finance and Organization at AUDI AG.

Next year Audi will launch a series of new cars. The A1, A7, A8 and R8 Spyder will be added to the product portfolio during 2010. At the end of 2010 Audi will unveil the Audi Q5 Hybrid, which will reach the market at the start of 2011 as the brand’s first full hybrid model. As Strotbek points out: ‘We will be in a position to finance all our planned investments from our operative cash flow.’

At the German locations and elsewhere, future policy is now being implemented: from 2009 through 2012 approximately 3.8 billion euros will be invested at the Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm plants. ‘This is a firm commitment to our German facilities. Audi is facing the technological upheaval in the automobile world in a farsighted way. The will to work and high qualifications of employees at our German plants are a firm foundation for the necessary changes,’ states Peter Mosch, Chairman of the Audi General Works Council.

About 2.5 billion euros will be invested at Ingolstadt and about 1.3 billion euros at Neckarsulm. A new transmission and emissions center will be opened at the Ingolstadt plant, and other investment priorities will be stamping tools for the new Audi A1 and the manufacturing structures for the A3 and A4 models. The investment focus in Neckarsulm will be on the A6, A7 und A8 models and new engine-function test rigs.

- Audi AG

Related posts:

Audi A1: The future is taking shape

You're reading Audi continues to invest strongly in the future originally posted on oneighturbo.com. From the end of October, two Volkswagen Tiguan HyMotion, two Caddy Maxi HyMotion and two Audi Q5 HFC under real conditions in Berlin’s city traffic will be tested. The aim is to demonstrate the suitability of hydrogen as a fuel in vehicles and to gain valuable insights into the evolution of this technology.

Prof. Juergen Leohold, head of research at Volkswagen: “The fuel cell is an important component of the fuel and powertrain strategy, Volkswagen. We are pleased to put our fuel cell vehicles available to the CEP project. The first Volkswagen models with a sufficiently durable and affordable fuel-cell drive could there be, in our view, at 2020th parallel, but also the development of a complete hydrogen infrastructure. ”

The Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) is an international association of companies BMW, Berlin Transportation Company (BVG), DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GM / Opel, Hydro AG, Linde and Shell Hydrogen, StatoillHydro, TOTAL, Vattenfall Europe and Volkswagen AG. The aim of a three-phased project is the technological development of the energy source of hydrogen for transport. The second phase, lasting until the end of 2010 provides a technical update of the vehicles and the infrastructure and testing the technology before under everyday conditions. In the third phase by the end of 2016, the market in preparation for the hydrogen technologies for the transport sector at the center. The CEP program is part of the National Innovation Program Hydrogen and fuel cells instead of technology (NIP).

- Volkswagen AG

Related posts:

Touran with fuel cell

You're reading Volkswagen launches fuel-cell vehicles on the road originally posted on oneighturbo.com. This is borne out by figures from the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). And as the registration statistics show, Audi also sells more all-wheel-drive models in Germany than any other premium brand. From January through August, Audi produced some 190,500 vehicles with quattro drive, which means that around one third of all Audi cars are equipped with this technology. The Audi Q5, the most prominent new addition to the all-wheel model lineup, is the most successful SUV in its class worldwide – with some 63,100 units sold in the first eight months of 2009.

‘We fully intend to strengthen our position in the all-wheel-drive market even further in the future,’ says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG. Starting from early October, the Audi Q5 will be built not only in Ingolstadt but also in Changchun (China) for the Chinese market. With this step, Audi intends to extend its leading role in a market which is forecast to become the world’s largest car market this year.

Starting in 2011, there will be a new member of the Audi SUV family: the Audi Q3, for which the company expects high unit sales. And with the Audi e-tron, which was presented a few weeks ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), Audi is also making use of its quattro drive system – one of the brand’s core technologies – in an electrically powered sports car.

‘With Vorsprung durch Technik we have already spelled out our leadership claim in our logo as a reflection of our status as a progressive premium brand. And, unlike other brands, we didn’t have to reinvent ourselves to do so,’ says Schwarzenbauer.

The quattro drive system is an integral part of the company’s model initiative, in the context of which Audi is expanding successfully into new segments. The Audi Q5, first introduced in the fall of 2008, is now the most successful SUV in its class worldwide; from January through August, Audi sold 63,119 units of this model, including 47,930 in Europe.

- Audi AG

Related posts:

AUDI AG Leads the Premium Market in Western Europe

You're reading Audi is worldwide all-wheel-drive leader in the premium segment originally posted on oneighturbo.com. The long-wheelbase Audi A4 and the Audi Q5 will be produced in this hall, which spans some 82,000 square meters (883,000 square feet). The capital expenditure amounts to around 100 million euros.

“This substantial increase in our production capacities will fuel our continued growth and boost China’s position as a strategically important market,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. He added that the company aims to sell 200,000 premium cars annually in China by 2015. “The expansion of our production capacities is a key mile marker along the route to this destination,” emphasizes Mr. Stadler.

Mr. An Tiecheng, President of FAW-VW, adds: “Changchun was China’s very first production site for premium vehicles. Today’s opening of this assembly hall paves the way for further innovation and sets a new standard in China’s automotive industry.”

The assembly hall was constructed in nine months and, following the pre-production phase, will begin series production just 14 months after the original construction work started. Virtual planning made it possible to design and simulate everything in advance – from the building’s design to materials-handling technology and plant equipment.

The new assembly hall thus satisfies the requirements of Audi’s globally standardized production system. This means that all logistics processes are integrated within assembly procedures; components are prepared as needed adjacent to the production line before entering the workflow. Cutting-edge techniques also play pivotal roles. The so-called marriage is just one example: a vehicle body and a chassis are joined and bolted by automated means.

In addition to the reliable and quality-optimized manufacturing processes, Frank Dreves, Member of the Board of Management for Production at AUDI AG, is especially fond of the workstations’ design. “Ergonomics also played a central role during the planning phase of the new assembly hall in Changchun. Height-adjustable materials-handling technology, for example, enables every one of our employees to maintain an optimal stance for working efficiently. That, in turn, ensures the excellence of our products,” underscores Mr. Dreves.

By opening this new assembly hall, Audi is continuing the success story it began 21 years ago in China. The brand is now market leader in the local premium segment; Audi sold 119,598 vehicles last year in China (including Hong Kong). From January through August 2009, 93,610 customers in China purchased a new Audi – which equates to year-on-year growth of 17.4 percent.

In addition to increasing production capacities, Audi will expand its exclusive network of dealerships and service facilities in China to include more than 200 locations by 2015. China currently has 139 Audi dealerships and 14 Audi terminals in a total of 95 cities.

- Fourtitude

Related posts:

Volkswagen Group boosts activities in China

You're reading Audi opens new assembly hall in Changchun originally posted on oneighturbo.com. For 15 years Audi has been producing aluminum bodies based on the Audi Space Frame (ASF). Numerous patents and awards document the innovative power of this technology.

Lightweight design is one of Audi’s greatest strengths and also typical of the brand because it combines dynamics with efficiency. The engineers are working on many new ideas for making the cars even lighter and thus even more efficient. For Audi, lightweight design is a fundamental technology for the sustainable mobility of the future.

Aluminum was an interesting material for bodies even back in the pioneering days of the automobile, and important inspiration was drawn from aeronautical engineering. In 1913, NSU built the Type 8/24, a model having a body made entirely of aluminum. Ten years later, the Audi Type K wore an experimental streamlined skin of this same material. In the 1930s, specialists from the Racing department of Auto Union manufactured aluminum panels by hand and used them to build the bodies and streamlining panels for their spectacular racing cars and land speed record cars.

825 kilograms: the 1936 Auto Union Type C

According to the Grand Prix rules for the years 1934 to 1937, the cars were not permitted to weigh more than 750 kilograms (1653.47 lb) without operating fluids, wheels and tires. The radical lightweight design that resulted drove performance to breathtaking heights. The 1936 Auto Union Type C, which tipped the scales at 825 kilograms (1818.81 lb) ready to race, had a V16 supercharged engine producing a good 380 kW (520 hp) mounted in front of the rear axle. Each horsepower had to propel just 1.6 kilograms (3.53 lb), hardly more than with a modern Le Mans sports prototype.

Lightweight design advanced to the level of a strategic project at Audi in 1982, at which time the company established a joint venture with an aluminum company from the United States. The mission was nothing more and nothing less than to once again reinvent the self-supporting body, but this time with a material that is roughly two-thirds lighter than conventional steel and also with a new geometry tailored to this material – the Audi Space Frame.

The development work was organized as an integrated project. A process that generated more than 40 patents and patent applications also developed a broad base of expertise in all areas – alloys, casting, shaping and joining of the parts. In 1985, Audi presented the body of an Audi 100 made of aluminum but still using a conventional monocoque design. The legendary concept sports cars from the fall of 1991, the Audi Avus quattro and the Audi quattro Spyder, had skins of the light metal but underneath were still supporting frames.

1993: The ASF technology study

The new technology was ready for series production in 1993: A shining silver showcar with an unpainted body of polished aluminum was on display at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The predecessor to the A8 bore the designation ASF, the abbreviation for Audi Space Frame. The production model that debuted the following year was a milestone in the history of the automobile: the first large-volume production car with a self-supporting aluminum body.

The A8 paved the way for Audi into the premium league, and it also sparked new developments for the traditional material of steel.

The principle embodied by the first A8 still applies today: Diecastings and extruded sections form a framework-like skeleton that incorporates aluminum panels as co-supporting elements. The components with their various cross-sections and shapes combine optimal function with low weight.

Compared to steel, an ASF body is at least 40 percent lighter. The body of the first A8 weighed only 249 kilograms (548.95 lb); that of the A2 compact (from 1999) weighed only 156 kilograms (343.92 lb). The superstructure of the A2 1.2 TDI – the world’s first four-door, three-liter car – weighed in at only 135 kilograms (297.62 lb), which was a decisive factor in the sensational average fuel consumption of 2.99 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers (78.67 US mpg).

A8, R8, TT and TT Roadster: the state of the art

Today’s models – the second generation of the A8 and the R8, TT Coupé and TT Roadster sports cars – document the current state of the ASF technology. The superstructure of the current A8 weights 218 kilograms (350.84 lb). The aluminum body of the R8, whose co-supporting engine frame is made of ultra light magnesium, tips the scales at 210 kilograms (462.97 lb). With the V10 engine producing 368 kW (525 hp), the entire car weighs only 1,620 kilograms (3,571.49 lb). Its specific weight is 3.1 kilograms (6.83 lb) per hp – the same as that of a well-trained athlete without a single gram of fat on his frame.

The body of the TT Coupé weighs in at 206 kilograms (454.15 lb); that of the TT Roadster at 251 kilograms (553.36 lb). The TT family also features an additional innovation. To ideally balance the axle loads between the front and back, Audi developed an innovative hybrid construction for its compact sports cars: Most of the body is made of aluminum, but steel is used in the rear.

Depending on the model, the curb weight of the TT has been reduced by between 20 and 90 kilograms (44.09 and 198.42 lb) compared to the previous model, which still had an all-steel body. At the same time, the static torsional rigidity of the Coupé increased by 50 percent and that of the Roadster by an even more impressive 100 percent. The ASF provides the foundation for the precise handling, the driving dynamics and the high level of passive safety. A lighter car has to dissipate less kinetic energy and is also does less damage to others involved in the accident.

The lightweight design combines sportiness and efficiency in typical Audi fashion. The TT 2.0 TDI quattro – a sports car with 125 kW (170 hp), 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque and all-wheel drive – contents itself with 5.3 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers (44.38 lb-ft) and emits just 139 grams of CO2 per kilometer (223.70 g/mile). Its dynamic driving performance – it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 226 km/h (140.43 mph) – are the result of the intelligent application of lightweight design. Audi uses lightweight design as an integrated approach to resolving the former paradox between driving pleasure and efficiency.

ASF: the reversal of the weight spiral

The reversal of the weight spiral that Audi initiated with the ASF principle has major secondary effects. A lighter body is the starting point for weight reductions on other parts of the car, such as the chassis or the fuel tank. Every 100 kilograms (220.46 lb) saved reduces fuel consumption by 0.3 to 0.5 liters per 100 kilometers, corresponding to a reduction of 8 to 11 grams of CO2 per kilometer (12.87 to 17.70 g/mile).

A low body weight already harmonizes ideally with the Audi principle of downsizing, according to which turbocharging replaces displacement. The highly efficient engines make further significant contribution to lowering fuel consumption. Lightweight bodies are even an absolute prerequisite for the electric drive systems of the future with their heavy batteries. The performance and range expected by the customers cannot be achieved without them.

Audi has already built more than 550,000 vehicles with an aluminum body. Added to this are roughly 9,000 Lamborghinis – no other manufacturer in the world can even come close in terms of the number of vehicles or their diversity. The ASF technology is an unparalleled success story. Audi has increased its lead step by step: in alloys, in the reduction of the number of parts and in production efficiency. Numerous innovations in development and production have raised the level of automation from 25 to over 80 percent, which is nearly on par with steel body construction.

In fabrication, traditional spot welding is being replaced by joining methods developed by Audi, including punch riveting, bonding or laser-MIG hybrid welding. In the TT and the R8, self-tapping screws are used to join many of the components. Another innovation is the laser-welded invisible seam on the roof of the TT.

The perfect interplay throughout the entire process chain – from development and planning, the building of the machines, fixtures and tools to the press shop, body shop and the paint shop to assembly – culminates in the utmost precision. The ideas of the designers are implemented to within a tenth of a millimeter in accordance with Audi’s stringent quality standards.

The Aluminum and Lightweight Design Center in Neckarsulm

In 1994, Audi established a special Aluminum Center at the Neckarsulm site for development, production planning and quality assurance. This facility was renamed the Aluminum and Lightweight Design Center in 2003. High-strength steels, tailored blanks, fiber-reinforced plastics and magnesium play an increasingly important role here. The head of the Aluminum and Lightweight Design Center, Heinrich Timm, says, ‘Aluminum remains the primary material, but we are intensively investigating the other materials, with our primary focus on fiber-reinforced composites.’

The lessons learned at the Aluminum and Lightweight Design Center innovation foundry, which employs 150, have already served as the basis for a three-digit number of patents in development and production – a balance they can be proud of. The European Patent Office named Audi ‘European Inventor of the Year 2008’ for its achievements with the ASF technology.

Prestigious award: The Euro Car Body Award

Audi won another prestigious trophy in 2006 for the TT hybrid construction – the Euro Car Body Award presented by the renowned Automotive Circle International. Audi had previously won this important innovation prize for body construction in 2003 in recognition of the A8.

A third award followed in 2008 for the Q5 – lightweight design is also a top priority for bodies made of steel panels. At only 355 kilograms (782.64 lb), the mid-size SUV has the lightest body in its class. Hot-shaped, ultra-high-strength steels form the strong backbone of its superstructure. They achieve their extremely high strength by being heated in a pass-through furnace to roughly 920 degrees Celsius (1688° Fahrenheit) and then subsequently cooled to approximately 180 degrees Celsius (356° Fahrenheit) in chilled press tools.

Lightweight design in the rest of the vehicle

Audi also makes systematic use of lightweight design in the drive chain and the chassis. Many engines uses aluminum and vermicular graphite cast iron, which is the result of a high-tech production process, to reduce the weight of the crankcase. Many models have chassis with predominately aluminum parts. Carbon fiber-ceramic brake discs are available as an option in the high-performance models. Other highlights of lightweight design include brake calipers, hoods and trunk lids, side panels or cover components made of aluminum and steering wheel rims or instrument panel mounts made of magnesium.

Experience from the world of motor sports flows back into the development work – the reduction and distribution of weight are extremely important for the Le Mans sports prototypes and the DTM (touring) cars. The race cars provide the production development engineers with important information about carbon and its combination with metal.

Research continues into new materials and alloys, with the focus on minimal weight with maximum durability as well as design and fabrication compatible with the materials. Audi will continue to expand its leadership role – the Vorsprung durch Technik in lightweight design.

- Audi AG

Related posts:

Audi AG: Neckarsulm’s Lightweight Excellence

You're reading Audi is the leader in lightweight design originally posted on oneighturbo.com. Competition in the segment is fiercer than ever, with new Japanese rivals joining each year. Despite this, the A4 2.0T manages best-in-class fuel economy, while also posting better 0-60 mph times and torque statistics than its six-cylinder, all-wheel drive competition (BMW 328xi, Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic, and Lexus IS250 AWD).

In 2010, the bar is raised even higher, with features like third-generation MMI featuring SIRIUS® traffic, and LED taillights on Premium Plus and Prestige models. Prestige models will now include navigation and voice control, while Premium models will see Bluetooth® and Homelink® packaged together as an option.

A4 sedan model year 2010 Pricing and Model Changes
(excluding $825 destination charge, taxes, title, options and dealer charges)

A4 2.0T FWD Sedan (Multitronic) Premium $31,450
A4 2.0T FWD Sedan (Multitronic) Premium Plus $35,000

A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Manual) Premium $32,350
A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Manual) Premium Plus $35,850
A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Manual) Prestige $41,050

A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Tiptronic®) Premium $33,550
A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Tiptronic®) Premium Plus $37,050
A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Tiptronic®) Prestige $42,250

A4 2.0T quattro Avant (Tiptronic®) Premium $35,350
A4 2.0T quattro Avant (Tiptronic®) Premium Plus $38,850
A4 2.0T quattro Avant (Tiptronic®) Prestige $44,550

S4 sedan will be available in September 2009; pricing will be announced at a later date.

Navigation models now equipped with 3rd Generation MMI and SIRIUS traffic

LED taillights on Premium Plus and Prestige models

Bluetooth and Homelink now packaged together as option on Premium model

Bang & Olufsen® premium audio system now available as option on Premium Plus

Prestige now includes Navigation (3G MMI) and Voice Control

Audi Side Assist now an optional package with Audi parking system advanced

S line wheel changes to 7 double spoke (formerly 5 tri-spoke).

2010 Audi A5

Acclaimed by the media for its beautifully innovative styling and superb driving dynamics, the A5 becomes even more attainable in 2010, thanks to the introduction of a 2.0 TFSI® variant, which delivers 211 horsepower and an astounding 258 lb-ft of torque through quattro all-wheel drive.
