The microsite designed to promote Truth in 24, the full-length NFL Films/Intersport documentary on the Audi Le Mans racing program, won a prestigious Catalyst Interactive Advertising Award.

Factory Design Labs, the Denver-based agency handling Audi of America interactive accounts, developed the Truth in 24 microsite as part of the Audi campaign to promote the award-winning film. Truth in 24 chronicled the Audi racing program’s pursuit of victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s most grueling race. The fast-paced and visually-stunning microsite offered rich content and information focused around the film including video, links to download the film exclusively from iTunes, wall paper, screen savers and more.

The Catalyst Interactive Advertising Award recognizes the most remarkable interactive advertising executed by automotive brands through the U.S. With more than 60 entries across the country this year, winners were awarded in six categories including Rich Media, Social Media, New/Emerging Media, Standard Messaging Media, Cross Platform, and Judges Choice. Judges named the Truth in 24 microsite the ‘Standard Messaging Winner’ in this year’s competition. Jumpstart Automotive Group named the Catalyst award winners at the J.D. Power Roundtable.

The Truth in 24 documentary showcased the raw power of Audi’s dominating TDI clean diesel engine. Although the racetrack might be an unexpected venue for an eco-friendly, gas-sipping machine, Audi proved its cutting-edge speed and fuel efficiency at 24 Hours of Le Mans. From the racetrack to U.S. highways, Audi recently introduced the Q7 TDI, Audi’s first TDI clean diesel vehicle in the U.S. and will soon be introducing the A3 TDI clean diesel, which achieves 42 mpg on the highway.

‘Whether it is with our vehicles or our marketing efforts, Audi is pushing the envelope of innovation to engage today’s luxury car buyers,’ said Scott Keogh, Chief Marketing Officer, Audi of America. ‘Factory Design Labs has been a tremendous partner and we’re honored to receive this recognition together. We are committed to raising the interactive advertising bar.’

Recognition in the interactive advertising space is not new for Audi, last year the team was awarded the ‘Best Rich Media Campaign’ for the Audi Iron Man microsite set up for the launch of the action film.

The winners were selected by a panel of highly respected experts from the automotive marketing and interactive advertising fields, including Scott Bremner, Creative Director, Siltanen and Partners; Jim Elliot, Creative Director, Goodby; Jean Halliday, Detroit Bureau Chief, AdvertisingAge; Eve Maidenberg, VP, Marketing at Jumpstart; Olivier Rabenschlag, Creative Director, TBWA and Chip Reingold, Chief Creative Officer, Blast RadiusS. Additionally, a ‘Best in Show’ award was handed out as selected by the public.”

At the 1000 kilometer race at the Nürburgring the privateer team Kolles scored its best result to date in the European based Le Mans Series (LMS) with fourth place overall. After a faultless race Andy Meyrick, Narain Karthikeyan and Charles Zwolsman finished fourth in their Audi R10 TDI behind the three Aston Martin “factory” cars. After almost six hours of racing only 14.5 seconds separated them from a podium finish. The second Audi R10 TDI retired at the start of the second hour due to an accident when lapping a GT car.

The successful Audi R10 TDI is likely to appear again on European race tracks in 2009. While Audi will contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans as part of its factory commitment with the new R15 TDI in 2009, Dr
Colin Kolles is planning to buy two Audi R10 TDI cars for his racing team. The privately fielded prototypes are planned to return to the venues of their greatest exploits in 2009: to the European-based Le Mans Series and to the 24-hour race at Le Mans, in which the Audi R10 TDI has not been beaten so far.

Since the 2006 season Audi has been cooperating with Dr Colin Kolles, who has entered two Audi A4 DTM cars in the DTM since that time. Now, the team owner based in Greding near Ingolstadt wants to extend his motorsport involvement to the sportscar area on his own initiative. The team plans to contest the 24-hour race at Le Mans on 13 and 14 June 2009 as well as the five rounds of the European-based Le Mans Series.

Audi Sport will sell two R10 TDI vehicles to Dr Kolles for this purpose and complement the agreement by a service package encompassing support for the private racing commitments by members of Audi Sport’s technical staff.

“We welcome the fact that Dr Kolles decided to take on this commitment and wants to purchase two Audi R10 TDI cars,” said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. “While on the factory side of the house we are concentrating on the development and fielding of the new R15 TDI sportscar as well as on the DTM, we are pleased to see that the R10 TDI will be privately entered in future and that racing vehicles of the Audi brand will continue to be represented in the Le Mans Series. That is why we agreed to the sale of the cars. However, our involvement will be strictly limited to providing support under the terms of the service agreement.”

In the 2006, 2007 and 2008 racing years, the Audi R10 TDI clinched as many as 22 overall victories in 38 worldwide entries. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans as well as in the final LM P1 classification of the American Le Mans Series during that time frame the Audi R10 TDI remained unbeaten and last year won the LM P1 class of the European-based Le Mans Series as well.

Audi of America will reveal the nationwide distribution deal it has reached to bring the award-winning documentary ‘Truth in 24’ to the U.S. audience.

Audi of America Chief Marketing Officer Scott Keogh will make the announcement Monday night during a media screening held in conjunction with the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The screening is taking place at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, 350 Madison Ave., Detroit, MI 48226. Doors will open at 7:30 pm for media who have a valid auto show credential, or a current business card.

“Not a week has gone by without questions flooding in about our plans to release this exceptional documentary,” Keogh said. “We’re excited to be able to provide an answer, at last, to fans of Le Mans racing, motorsports in general, great documentary filmmaking and, of course, Audi.”

Truth in 24 began with a simple premise: To show the drama, technology and teamwork that come together each year to produce the world’s most grueling and historic auto race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France. Audi believed the thrills of Le Mans racing told a compelling story on their own merits and turned the project over to the Emmy-winning film makers at NFL Films. Audi insisted on giving directors free rein to make the film without favor to Audi. In fact, Audi’s primary involvement was to ensure the NFL film crews gained unprecedented access that would make all of the activities surrounding the race come alive. Narrating the documentary, which NFL Films co-produced with Intersport of Chicago, is action movie star Jason Statham. The film is 96 minutes, has not yet been rated.

‘Truth in 24’ debuted at the Chicago Film Festival and Hollywood’s AFI Fest to positive media reviews. It has already claimed its own trophy, winning the top documentary award at the Fort Lauderdale International Festival in November.

Atherton: “I cannot say enough about how great a partner, competitor and participant Audi has been.”
American Le Mans Series President and CEO Scott Atherton expressed nothing but praise for Audi following its announcement that it will depart after the first event of the 2009 season, calling Audi’s near-legendary accomplishments and technological advancements “the pinnacle of achievement in sports car racing.”

“I cannot say enough about how great a partner, competitor and participant Audi has been since it first competed in the Series in 1999,” said Atherton about the auto manufacturer that literally rewrote the record books for the world’s premier sports car series. “We understand that the economic climate is forcing many companies to make very difficult decisions. We will welcome Audi back to the American Le Mans Series stage at the appropriate time to compete against our world-class group of race teams and manufacturers.

“Audi, along with Dave Maraj and his Champion Racing organization, have established the benchmark for how a motorsports organization should be run,” Atherton added. “They raised the game for all our competitors with their innovation, work ethic, professionalism and accomplishments, which are major reasons why the American Le Mans Series enjoyed its most successful season ever this year.”

Audi’s new state-of-the-art R15 TDI sport prototype will still make its debut, however, in the American Le Mans Series. With its new revolutionary clean diesel-powered prototype, Audi will attempt to record its 10th consecutive victory at America’s most iconic sports car race, the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida on March 21. After that, it returns to Europe to prepare for its defense of the 24 Hours of Le Mans championship.

Audi campaigned its first full season in the American Le Mans Series in 2000. By the end of the 2008 season, it had recorded 55 LMP1 class victories, including 30 consecutive wins from Sebring 2006 to Detroit 2008. Its dominance was unmatched, particularly in the endurance classics where it excelled unlike any other. Audi won the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans nine times each. In 2005, the Maraj-led Champion Racing team from Pompano Beach, FL became the first American-based team to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 38 years. A year later, Audi introduced the revolutionary R10 TDI turbo diesel, often called the world’s most technically advanced and sophisticated race car. It has captured Le Mans every year since that debut.

“The decision to withdraw from the American Le Mans Series was a very difficult one,” said Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport. “Furthermore, with the Champion Racing team, we also had a partner that operates at the highest level. The extraordinary dedication and precision of Team Champion was the key to Audi’s victories over the last few years in America. We achieved an unprecedented winning series together. Our brand dominated proceedings last season by taking seven wins in 11 races. TDI-Technology supported perfectly the launch of Audi-TDI Technology in the USA.”

Four rings, four wins. Enough said! Seriously, name another brand with this amount of motorsport effort across the globe, sometimes on the same weekend.

Four rings, four wins. The end of season party at the Audi Forum Neckarsulm was celebrated under this motto, and at which Audi thanked its teams and drivers for the most successful motorsport season in the company’s history. Chairman of the Board of Management Rupert Stadler and Michael Dick, Member of the Board of Management with responsibility for Technical Development, emphasised the importance of motorsport for the brand.

“The victories on the race track allow the four rings to shine,” declared Rupert Stadler. “We are proud to have won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the American Le Mans Series and the Le Mans Series with the finest diesel technology and winning the DTM title has further emphasised the dynamic of our most successful model.”

Michael Dick spoke of a “historical year” which will be difficult to beat, and explained just how important Audi’s involvement in motorsport is. “The members of the board examine exactly how motorsport benefits us. Studies show that the brand’s image is at the top when we are at our most successful in motorsport.”

Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, who is manager of Audi Sport since November 1993, passed on the thanks expressed by the executive board to his employees and the Audi teams. “You have achieved something superhuman this year,” he emphasised. “We are well represented with Joest and Champion Racing in sportscars and Abt Sportsline, Phoenix, Rosberg and Kolles as partner teams in touringcar racing. We sense the trust placed in us by the executive board. This is the greatest motivation for us to be successful.”

In addition to the victorious drivers from the 2008 season, Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro were also honoured for their special services. The two oldest serving Audi drivers make space for younger drivers, announced, however, that they want to remain associated with Audi in the future. “Both have given an enormous amount to the Audi brand. For this reason I thank them sincerely in the name of the AUDI AG,” said Dr Wolfgang Ullrich.

Audi officially completed 28 races last season with the Audi A4 DTM and the Audi R10 TDI. Timo Scheider took the DTM title together with Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline. Alexandre Prémat, Mike Rockenfeller and the Audi Sport Team Joest won the European based Le Mans Series in Europe, Lucas Luhr, Marco Werner and Dave Maraj’s team the American Le Mans Series. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Audi Sport Team Joest recorded the third consecutive Le Mans victory for the Audi R10 TDI.
