Audi is now taking this literally, with the ‘Audi Efficiency Challenge A to B.’ The tour starts in the north of Europe, in the Norwegian town of Å on the Lofoten islands, and runs through eight countries to Bée on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. Efficiency is an on-board standard in every Audi, which is why the company is sending not only the particularly optimized fuel-efficient models from five model series on the Efficiency Challenge, but also the sporty top models of each line.

The fuel-saving Audi A3 1.6 TDI with CO2 emissions of 99 grams per kilometer (159.33 g/mile) is joined by the S3 Sportback; the A4 2.0 TDI e by the S4 with 333 hp; and the A5 Sportback 2.0 TFSI by the A5 Sportback 3.2 FSI. Representing the Audi Q7 model series are the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro and the Audi Q7 6.0 TDI quattro; and the TT 2.0 TDI quattro is hitting the road along with the dynamic TT RS.

The efficiency leader

Audi is the efficiency leader among the premium manufacturers, with 32 models currently emitting less than 140 grams of CO2 per kilometer (225.31 g/mile). The latest version of the Audi A3 1.6 TDI, which emits only 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer (159.33 g/mile), is making its world premier at the ‘A to B’ challenge and can demonstrate its efficiency under real-world conditions. The A4 2.0 TDI e with its 100 kW (136 hp) 2.0 TDI power unit emits only 119 g of CO2 per kilometer (191.51 g/mile). Audi’s modular efficiency platform plays a decisive role in this impressive achievement, bundling a broad portfolio of effective technologies.

Audi uses these new solutions in a variety of ways across the entire product line. The S4’s mechanically supercharged V6 engine produces 245 kW (333 hp), yet consumes only 9.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (24.25 US mpg) in the EU driving cycle. The TT RS, whose five-cylinder, turbocharged engine produces 250 kW (340 hp), consumes on average only 9.2 liters/100 km (25.27 mpg).

The Audi Efficiency Challenge kicks off today, September 22, and ends on September 30. It is broken down into three stages, each consisting of several days. The first runs from Å to Trondheim in southern Norway; the second to the German capital city of Berlin; and the third ends at the final destination, the town of Bée overlooking Lake Maggiore. The tour includes a wide range of roads and landscapes, taking participants along the coastal roads on the Lofoten islands and across Germany’s autobahns. The route encompasses impressive cities such as Oslo, Copenhagen and Prague as well as the towering mountains of the Alps.

- Audi AG

Related posts:

Audi Efficiency Challenge from A to B

You're reading Efficient mobility under everyday conditions: The Audi Efficiency Challenge A to B originally posted on oneighturbo.com. These innovative engines boast some very different key data, yet they share something in common: They embody Audi’s conviction that dynamics and efficiency are not mutually exclusive; on the contrary, they go hand in hand and are mutually complementary.

Audi S5 Sportback gallery after the jump

Elegant dynamics: Audi S5 Sportback

The S5 Sportback is the pinnacle of the new Sportback model line. This elegant, five-door coupé is propelled by a three-liter V6 with a mechanical compressor. From a displacement of 2,995 cm3 (182.77 in3), the small turbo engine delivers 245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm (324.53 lb.-ft.) of torque between 2,900 and 5,300 rpm. The S5 Sportback sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.4 seconds [provisional figure]; its top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph) is limited by an electronic governor. It averages just 9.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (24.25 mpg) [provisional figures] — the best in this power-output category.

<a quattro permanent all-wheel drive are standard equipment. Upon request, Audi will include the sport differential. It variably distributes power on the rear axle between the rear wheels. This new ‘top model’ has a sportily configured chassis with 18-inch aluminum wheels fitted with 245/40 tires; black brake calipers bear S5 emblems at the front. Speed-dependent servotronic steering is also standard.

Small yet striking exterior and interior features visually distinguish the Audi S5 Sportback. Equipment highlights include electrically adjustable S sports seats covered with Silk Nappa leather. Sales of the Audi S5 Sportback will start in Spring 2010; its basic price will be 57,900 euros.

Extremely clean: Audi A4 3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro

Audi debuted the 3.0 TDI clean diesel engine in its large Q7 SUV; now, the world’s cleanest diesel technology will also be available in the best-selling A4.

A package of technologies boasts an array of innovative solutions for engines and the after-treatment of exhaust gas.

At the engine, a new common-rail injection system (which generates up to 2,000 bars of pressure), innovative pressure sensors in the combustion chamber, and an especially high-performance exhaust recirculating system collectively ensure a highly efficient and low-emission combustion process. A novel DeNOX catalytic converter, integrated within the end of the exhaust system, reduces residual nitrogen oxides. Just upstream of it, a pump injects an additive named AdBlue into the hot exhaust flow; there, this aqueous solution decomposes into ammonia — which splits the nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water.

The A4 3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro already complies with the emission limits of the EU’s Euro 6 standard, expected to become law in 2014. It is also very fuel-efficient, averaging only 6.7 liters (Avant: 6.8 liters) of fuel per 100 km (35.11 and 34.59 miles per U.S. gallon). And this TDI engine is indeed a powerful performer, needing only 6.2 seconds (Avant: 6.3 seconds) to go from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph). Top speed is electronically governed to 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

In conjunction with a six-speed tiptronic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive, this vehicle guarantees a high degree of comfort and superior traction.

Efficient Downsizing: Audi A3 and A3 Sportback 1.2 TFSI

Downsizing is a cornerstone of Audi’s efficiency strategy — and Audi is relentlessly committed. The A3 model line will soon introduce yet another turbocharged gasoline engine featuring lower displacement. It unites maximum performance with minimum consumption.

Designed from scratch, the new 1.2 TFSI generates 77 kW (105 hp) from a displacement of 1,197 cm3 (73.05 in3). And as is typical of Audi, turbocharging and direct gasoline injection once again perfectly comprise a technological one-two punch. Thanks to an aluminum crankcase, this four-cylinder engine weighs just 89.5 kilograms (197.31 pounds); this remarkably low weight also boosts its efficiency.

The 1.2 TFSI has been optimized to minimize friction. Eight valves are actuated by a single camshaft. A common-rail system injects the fuel. An electric control valve operates the turbocharger’s wastegate valve; boost pressure builds up spontaneously and scavenging losses drop.

This small engine generates 175 Nm (129.07 lb.-ft.) of torque between just 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. It propels the three-door A3 1.2 TFSI from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62.14 mph) in 11.1 seconds; the Sportback, in 11.3 seconds. Both versions reach a top speed of 190 km/h (118.06 mph) and, on average, consume just 5.5 liters of fuel per 100 km (42.77 mpg) — emitting just 127 grams of CO2 per kilometer (204.39 g/mile).

Sales of the A3 and A3 Sportback 1.2 TFSI will begin in the first quarter of 2010. The new engine will initially be paired with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission.”

Related posts:

The Audi 2.0 TFSI wins the International Engine of the Year Award 2009

You're reading Audi to debut the S5 Sportback, A4 3.0 TDI and A3 1.2 TFSI in Frankfurt originally posted on oneighturbo.com. Chief among the advances: Audi stands as the only automaker in the U.S. featuring efficient and performance-tuned FSI direct-injection technology with all of its gasoline-powered engines. Audi will also offer navigation as standard equipment for a limited time on 2010 Audi A6 Premium Plus models. And every Audi model will have distinctive LED daytime running lights as available or standard equipment.

Audi moved sales of many 2010 models ahead by several weeks following a successful sell-down of the previous model-year inventory. Sales of the 2009 Audi A5 and S5 coupes, for example, finished July 57.2 percent ahead of the sales pace set in the first seven months of last year. Demand for the all-new Audi Q5 has been exceptionally strong since its February introduction to consumers, with sales hitting 6,724 units by the end of July. Here is a summary of the product highlights and pricing news for the 2010 model-year Audi cars and SUVs:

2010 Audi A3

The Audi A3 has both pioneered and led a new premium compact car segment since its U.S. introduction in 2005. In 2009, worldwide sales of the successful A3 had exceeded 1.9 million, and that number continues to swell today.

To ensure the 2010 A3 stays ahead of the ever-growing pack, Audi has made available a number of upscale features, including upgraded wheels and standard Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights on Premium Plus models. Every 2010 A3 showcases the sporty Audi DNA with S line exterior upgrades now standard on all models and quattro® all-wheel drive available with the award-winning 2.0 TFSI® engine.

In 2010, Audi remains the standard by which luxury interiors are judged, and the 2010 A3 is no exception. Buyers can choose wood-accented interior details for the first time in 2010, and leather/alcantara seats are available on Titanium Sport models as well. The A3 is now available in either Premium or Premium Plus trim, allowing the buyer to conveniently add popular luxury features with one click.

A3 2.0T model year 2010 Pricing and Model Changes
(excluding $825 destination charge, taxes, title, options and dealer charges)

A3 2.0T FWD (Manual) Premium $27,270
A3 2.0T FWD (Manual) Premium Plus $29,270

A3 2.0T FWD (S tronic®) Premium $28,750
A3 2.0T FWD (S tronic®) Premium Plus $30,750

A3 2.0T quattro (S tronic®) Premium $30,850
A3 2.0T quattro (S tronic®) Premium Plus $32,850

A3 2.0 TDI clean diesel will be available in December 2009; pricing for that model will be announced at a later date.

3.2 FSI engine option discontinued

S line exterior equipment now standard on every A3

Titanium package is now Titanium Sport Package (now includes sport suspension and seats)

Leather/alcantara seat now available as part of Titanium Sport packages

Wood interior trim now available

Xenon headlights with LED DRL standard on Premium Plus model

Wheels upgraded in appearance

2010 Audi A4

More than a midsize luxury sedan, the Audi A4 has been vital to the Audi growth as a brand in the United States. Currently, the A4 sedan alone sells more than 40,000 units annually in the U.S., while competing with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Competition in the segment is fiercer than ever, with new Japanese rivals joining each year. Despite this, the A4 2.0T manages best-in-class fuel economy, while also posting better 0-60 mph times and torque statistics than its six-cylinder, all-wheel drive competition (BMW 328xi, Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic, and Lexus IS250 AWD).

In 2010, the bar is raised even higher, with features like third-generation MMI featuring SIRIUS® traffic, and LED taillights on Premium Plus and Prestige models. Prestige models will now include navigation and voice control, while Premium models will see Bluetooth® and Homelink® packaged together as an option.

A4 sedan model year 2010 Pricing and Model Changes
(excluding $825 destination charge, taxes, title, options and dealer charges)

A4 2.0T FWD Sedan (Multitronic) Premium $31,450
A4 2.0T FWD Sedan (Multitronic) Premium Plus $35,000

A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Manual) Premium $32,350
A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Manual) Premium Plus $35,850
A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Manual) Prestige $41,050

A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Tiptronic®) Premium $33,550
A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Tiptronic®) Premium Plus $37,050
A4 2.0T quattro Sedan (Tiptronic®) Prestige $42,250

A4 2.0T quattro Avant (Tiptronic®) Premium $35,350
A4 2.0T quattro Avant (Tiptronic®) Premium Plus $38,850
A4 2.0T quattro Avant (Tiptronic®) Prestige $44,550

S4 sedan will be available in September 2009; pricing will be announced at a later date.

Navigation models now equipped with 3rd Generation MMI and SIRIUS traffic

LED taillights on Premium Plus and Prestige models

Bluetooth and Homelink now packaged together as option on Premium model

Bang & Olufsen® premium audio system now available as option on Premium Plus

Prestige now includes Navigation (3G MMI) and Voice Control

Audi Side Assist now an optional package with Audi parking system advanced

S line wheel changes to 7 double spoke (formerly 5 tri-spoke).

2010 Audi A5

Acclaimed by the media for its beautifully innovative styling and superb driving dynamics, the A5 becomes even more attainable in 2010, thanks to the introduction of a 2.0 TFSI® variant, which delivers 211 horsepower and an astounding 258 lb-ft of torque through quattro all-wheel drive. A 2010 Audi A5 quattro with manual transmission can now be had for a full $4,700 less than its predecessor, a manual transmission-equipped 2009 A5 3.2 quattro.

The progressive design of the A5 continues to give the swooping coupe an appearance that is both elegant and dynamic, with the only change in appearance being a new wheel design for the A5 2.0 T Premium, and LED taillights on Premium Plus and Prestige models.

‘The Audi A5 is the most beautiful car I have ever designed,’ says Walter de’Silva, head of Volkswagen Group Design, with absolute conviction. The precisely drawn lines that gracefully interplay with powerful surfaces, the expressive front face, and the equally distinctive tail end yield a wholly desirable coupe. The daytime running lights, comprising a strip of eight LEDs on each side, make the A5’s optional Xenon headlights absolutely unmistakable.

Inside, the driver is surrounded with the upscale features expected of Audi vehicles, including three-zone automatic climate control and an extra-large panoramic tilting roof, which lends the A5 an especially open and airy interior. Audi third-generation MMI is new for 2010, with lightning fast navigation, 3D map topography and SIRIUS® traffic.

A5 coupe model year 2010 Pricing and Model Changes
(excluding $825 destination charge, taxes, title, options and dealer charges)

A5 2.0T quattro Coupe (Manual) Premium $36,000
A5 2.0T quattro Coupe (Manual) Premium Plus $39,500
A5 2.0T quattro Coupe (Manual) Prestige $44,300

A5 2.0T quattro Coupe (Tiptronic) Premium $37,200
A5 2.0T quattro Coupe (Tiptronic) Premium Plus $40,700
A5 2.0T quattro Coupe (Tiptronic) Prestige $45,500

A5 3.2 quattro Coupe (Tiptronic) Premium Plus $44,000
A5 3.2 quattro Coupe (Tiptronic) Prestige $48,800

S5 4.2 V8 FSI Coupe (Manual) Premium Plus $52,400
S5 4.2 V8 FSI Coupe (Manual) Prestige $56,250

S5 4.2 FSI (V8) Coupe (Tiptronic) Premium Plus $53,600
S5 4.2 FSI (V8) Coupe (Tiptronic) Prestige $57,450

A5 2.0 TFSI Cabriolet and S5 3.0 TFSI (supercharged V6) Cabriolet will be available in Fall 2009; pricing and availability will be announced at a later date.

2.0 TFSI engine introduced with quattro AWD in manual and Tiptronic transmissions

3.2 FSI with manual transmission discontinued

A5 coupe moves to Premium-Premium Plus-Prestige line structure

2.0T Premium now offers A5 a $4,700 lower price point in the market

Navigation models now equipped with 3rd Generation MMI and SIRIUS traffic

LED taillights on Premium Plus and Prestige models

New wheel design for A5 2.0T Premium

2010 Audi Q5

The Audi Q5 has quickly established a firm foothold in a segment growing in both competition and overall market share, thanks to a sporting demeanor and rugged usability. The availability of Audi drive select further solidifies the dynamic personality, allowing the driver to fine tune steering, engine, and damper characteristics at the push of a button.

Inside, three-zone climate control pairs with third-generation navigation to keep the Q5 on the cutting edge. The 265 horsepower engine complements the level of functional luxury present throughout the A6, and takes its place alongside the supercharged 3.0 TFSI and 4.2 FSI V8 engines to offer buyers a versatile array of powertrain choices.

Also for 2010, new Sport Packages sharpen the performance character of the A6 with lowered sport suspension, sport steering wheel and either all-season 18’ or performance 19’ tires. The 2010 Audi A6 capitalizes on the most successful of attributes of Audi design. For the first time, daytime running lights are standard on halogen-equipped cars.

Inside, buyers are treated to a new level of functionality and comfort. Sales of the 2009 Audi A5, for example, finished June 168% ahead of the sales pace set a year earlier. Demand for the all-new Audi Q5 has been exceptionally strong since its February introduction to consumers with sales hitting 5,701 so far this year.

Each of these models in the heart of the Audi lineup receives upgrades for the 2010 model year. A4 and A5 now feature LED tail lights in Premium Plus and Prestige lines, A5 gets the same fuel efficient 2.0 TFSI direct-injection engine offered in the A4, and Q5 Prestige offers an optional Luxury Package.

‘Despite the economic headwinds that have affected all premium automotive brands this year, we see no signs of interest lagging in these three models,’ said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. ‘That’s good news heading into the 2010 model year for our market share in the U.S., which has been hitting record levels. That’s good news for our dealers, who are enjoying the enthusiasm the Audi brand is generating. We need to release these new models early because of our proactive management of unsold inventories and because Audi continues to bring new models to the freshest lineup in the luxury sector. Both trends will continue in the months ahead.’

Audi expects to release 2010 pricing and model year changes for the remainder of its lineup within the next few weeks.

A4 sedan model year 2010 Pricing and Model Changes
(excluding $825 Destination Charge)

A4 2.0T FWD Sedan (Multitronic) – Despite an economic environment that remains challenging, Audi expects its market share will improve in June, to 9.1% based on preliminary industry figures.

Preliminary sales and market share totals for the entire imported luxury vehicle segment in the U.S. indicate that Audi captured its second-highest share of the U.S. imported luxury car market in June 2009, trailing only the 9.2% share Audi achieved in April 2009. Audi also expects to realize an imported luxury vehicle share of more than 8.2% through the first six months of the year. That compares to a June 2008 Audi market share of nearly 7.8% and a January through June 2008 share of 6.7%.

Strong consumer demand for the Audi Q5 crossover vehicle and impressive early demand for the new Audi Q7 TDI clean diesel model contributed to the increased Audi market share for the month and the first half of 2009.

The Audi A4 Cabriolet also received a strong response from consumers, achieving its best month of sales since June 2008. Another success story for Audi was the Audi A5, which achieved sales of more than 167% over the same month last year.

‘Each month of 2009 has demonstrated the strength of the Audi brand in the face of difficult economic headwinds,’ said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. ‘The trend is clear: Audi is outperforming the rest of the imported luxury car market on a percentage basis. And this is happening without extraordinary discounting and other gimmicks. It is a testament to the long-term momentum Audi has developed and the caliber of our products in the freshest fleet out there.’

In its fourth full month, the Audi Q5 luxury crossover vehicle continues to garner extremely strong consumer interest. With 1,324 units sold in June, the Q5 surpassed the previous month’s sales record by 84.9%. The rapid inventory turnaround at dealerships nationwide is another proof point of the strong demand for the Audi Q5.

In its second full month of sales, the new Audi Q7 TDI received a positive response with 202 sales in June, accounting for 26% of total Q7 sales. Total sales for the Audi Q7 reached 771.

With 737 units sold, the Audi A4 Cabriolet recorded a 20% sales gain in June 2009 from a month earlier and was down only 4.9% from June 2008 demand. Overall sales of the Audi A4 model portfolio reached 3,644 units in June and 18,101 through the first six months of the year.

Also continuing its strength in 2009, Audi A5 sales increased over last year by 167.9%, with 635 units sold this June. The A5 exceeded total sales from 2008 over the same period by 60.4%, due to 3,785 units sold in 2009.

The Audi yearly event, Summer of Audi, drove strong showroom and Internet traffic in May and June, up 9% and 62%, respectively, over the event last year. Audi recorded 2,667 Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) units sold in June, and has now exceeded 16,024 CPO sales in 2009.

Related posts:

Audi achieves 8.8% share of May imported luxury car sales in U.S.

You're reading Audi expects a 9.1% share of June U.S. imported luxury vehicle sale originally posted on oneighturbo.com.
