Another excellent piece from Josh Clason and Depth of Speed. The video is treated in a way, very reminiscent of old VW commercials. Josh meets up with Craig Johnson and his “resto” ‘vert T1. Craig also owns a mint Red/Black Samba that has some great rolling shots.

The relationship of car and owner once again comes to the forefront of this episode of Depth of Speed with Josh Clason. Craig Johnson represents a long list of devout Volkswagen fanatics who have carried on the legacy of several iconic products from the German carmaker. Known as “the people’s car,” Johnson’s relationship with the VW T1 is highlighted as we’re treated to another cinematic gem.

Wow. This is how it’s done. We’ve been wanting to cover more air-cooled news for all of you and this is a wicked start. Stephen Brooks captures the true essence of the vdub lowlife. In todays age of “baggin” everything, good ol’ classic drops are great to see on the road.

Both Aaron and Simon are out of Low n’ Slow VW in the U.K and feature late 60′s model Beetle’s outfitted with some OEM goodness.

They’ve kept the Beetles true age aesthetic with rust, dents and interior hazards. Classic wood slat racks on both, EMPI Raider wheels and a rare NOS hood deflector on the teal Beetle. We are huge fans of the 5-lug bubble cap wheels with white walls on the red Beetle.

Wow. We completely missed this one. If you’re not familiar with Kickstarter, it is a way to get funding for your concepts/projects.

The Bus is a project by Damon Ristau. Damon owns and operates Firewater Film Company. He drives a Bus. 3 days ago, the project hit its goal of $25K via 298 backers. Congratulations Damon!

This is the story of a vehicle that became an icon. Anyone who has ever driven a VW Bus already knows that it’s a tale of freedom, love, friendship, breakdowns and adventure.

How did a post-WWII German utility vehicle come to represent freedom and peace around the world?

In The Bus, we answer this question by allowing the vehicle to act as the main character, and the people it carries along the way to be its voice. The film begins in Germany with a simple sketch that would change the world forever. What comes next is a wild ride that takes us through time following the evolution (the good, the bad and the ugly) of the vehicle that has established a colorful and resonant place in modern culture. From Woodstock to Hollywood, and Burning Man to Baja, we find people from all walks of life who share their stories and passion for The Bus.

This is a documentary that really wants to get made. Since the idea was conceived a couple years ago, everything surrounding the film has been serendipitously falling into place. We are getting close, but now we need your help.

The funds raised here are vital to finishing this film. We hope to continue production and post-production through the summer and to have a finished film by the end of this year. This support will allow us to enrich the film by hiring additional crew, licensing archival footage and securing rights to the high caliber soundtrack this subject deserves.

If the Chevy Volt’s $40,000 price tag sounds a bit too steep, you could always go the do-it-yourself route of Oregon teenager Ashton Stark.

He just finished a yearlong conversion of his grandfather’s 1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle into an electric car.

“I was actually looking online with my dad at electric cars, because we heard a lot about them and thought they were kind of cool,” Ashton says. “I decided I wanted to do one. And once I got the body from my grandpa, it all just kind of fell together.”

With help from his father, Ashton installed nine golf cart batteries in the car and connected a single motorized shaft to the Beetle’s transmission.

He estimates the car can travel about 45 miles on a full charge at about 45 mph. He says the electric conversion can be applied to other cars, too.

“You can convert almost any lightweight vehicle to electric,” Ashton says. “VWs and Porsches work the best for electric, though.”

His grandfather’s old Beetle holds special significance. “My grandpa would be incredibly proud of something like this.”

Ashton won’t be able to drive his new electric Beetle for a few more days; he turns 15 today and will take the test for his learner’s permit Monday.

His next project: outfitting a car for his sister.

“I’m working on finding a straight body for either a Bug or a Porsche to convert for my little sister for her first car.”
