I woke to a picture in my email of the Polo Cup race… in the rain! I thought I don’t recall reading anything about Sunday being wet. so far it seems to be playing into Audi’s hands as they swept the top 6 and had 8 cars in the top 10. Points’ leader and reigning DTM champion Timo Scheider set the fastest lap time, on the drying track. Gary Paffett was just over a second off Timo’s pace.
Decision day is there. In warm-up, the 20 DTM drivers of Audi and Mercedes-Benz prepared for the grand finale. Points’ leader and reigning DTM champion Timo Scheider set the fastest lap time. On a drying track, the German lapped the 4.574 kilometres long Grand Prix circuit in 1.49.882 minutes. His rival in the battle for the DTM title, Gary Paffett, ended up only ninth, 1.094 seconds down.
Behind Scheider, Mike Rockenfeller drove the fastest Audi A4 DTM from the previous year into second place. Alexandre Prémat, Martin Tomczyk, Matias Ekström and Oliver Jarvis completed the Audi sextet in front. Jamie Green ended up seventh with the fastest AMG Mercedes C-Class.
However, these positions from warm-up will hardly have any significance. In the tenth and final round of the season, Timo Scheider and Gary Paffett will battle for the title. Mattias Ekström will be starting from pole position with Paffett in second. The Brit has to make up seven points on Scheider in the drivers’ standings. The latter has good chances from third place on the grid to become the first driver since Bernd Schneider in 2000 and 2001 to defend his title.
