Volkswagen is expanding its range of extremely fuel efficient, clean and economical models with great vigor – this year too. Making an appearance as a world premiere at the 2009 Auto Mobil International (March 28 to April 5) is the new Golf GTD* with a 125 kW / 170 PS common rail TDI engine. The 222 km/h fast Golf consumes just 5.3 liters fuel per 100 kilometers.
Volkswagen is also presenting these German debuts in Leipzig: the new Polo*, the Polo BlueMotion concept car, the exclusive Passat CC BlueTDI Individual and the natural gas powered Touran TSI EcoFuel. Another world premiere is the new Golf Plus BiFuel. In parallel, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is introducing a new compact van powered by natural gas: the Caddy Maxi EcoFuel. In addition, the commercial vehicle brand is showing the California Cape2Cape that was developed for globetrotters and an updated long-wheelbase version of the Multivan.
Polo BlueMotion Concept Car
The new Number 1 when it comes to economy is the Polo BlueMotion concept car. The world’s most fuel efficient five-seater is still a concept. Fuel consumption: 3.3 liter! CO2 emissions: just 87 g/km! Likelihood of going into production: extremely high! High-tech systems on board: a new 1.2 liter common rail TDI producing 55 kW / 75 PS, automatic start-stop and a system for regenerative braking – recovery of braking energy.
Golf BlueMotion
Volkswagen is showing just how fuel-efficient today’s cars can be in the new Golf BlueMotion. Based on the sixth generation of the bestseller, this is a multi-talented car with an average fuel consumption of 3.8 liters (99 g/km CO2) that should appeal both to those who drive high business mileages and private users. The Golf has an automatic start-stop system and makes use of regenerative braking. Despite all of its economizing, the 77 kW / 105 PS Golf BlueMotion is anything but lacking in performance. Just the opposite is the case thanks to its 250 Newton-meter of torque.
Golf Plus BlueMotion
No less is true of the new Golf Plus BlueMotion, which uses the same new 1.6 TDI with common rail injection and identical systems such as regenerative braking and a start-stop system. The average fuel consumption of this versatile high-roofed Golf is 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers (114 g/km CO2), depending on vehicle configuration. That is the top value in a competitive field, and it represents an additional 0.5 liter reduction in fuel consumption compared to the first Golf Plus BlueMotion. This Golf can easily handle 1,100 kilometers on one fill of its 55 liter fuel tank.
Golf Plus BiFuel
Also making its debut in Leipzig as a German premiere is the Golf Plus BiFuel that is factory equipped to operate with Autogas. Its bivalent drive – it is easy to switch over to gasoline driving too – reduces costs and emissions. When the Golf Plus BiFuel is powered by LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), its environmental balance sheet shows a 10 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to a gasoline engine. The system being presented in the Golf Plus BiFuel offers significant advantages compared to aftermarket Autogas systems. For one, unlike aftermarket solutions the car has been crash tested – together with all of its fuel tanks – as a total system, so it is safer. Second, the engine was specifically designed for LPG operation and is more durable than engines originally configured for just gasoline. In Autogas mode, the Golf Plus BiFuel’s four-cylinder engine outputs a power of 72 kW / 98 PS and consumes an average of 9.8 liters of LPG per 100 kilometers (159 g/km CO2).
Passat CC BlueTDI
The extremely fuel efficient Passat CC BlueTDI takes driving range up to 1,300 kilometers between fill-ups. This car is a technical sensation, since its engine – the 105 kW / 143 PS BlueTDI with downstream SCR catalytic converter that significantly reduces nitrogen oxides – is considered the cleanest diesel in the world! This 214 km/h fast touring sedan just needs 5.2 liters (!) diesel fuel to cover 100 kilometers. CO2: 139 g/km. Even today, this Volkswagen already fulfills emission limits of the Euro-6 standard planned for 2014. The Passat CC BlueTDI can be ordered with an optional automatic 6-speed dual clutch transmission. This much is certain: In the everyday business world this car answers practically all of the questions posed by our times. And it answers them sustainably. The BlueTDI version of the touring sedan being shown in Leipzig is based on the brand new Passat CC Individual. Its calling card: the finest of materials and the most exclusive equipment.
Touran TSI EcoFuel
The Touran TSI EcoFuel is debuting as one of the world’s lowest-emissions vans. The ‘nor mal’ Touran EcoFuel (80 kW / 109 PS) is one of the most successful natural gas cars in Europe. Now Volks wagen is presenting the world premiere of an entirely new natural gas version of the van: the Touran TSI EcoFuel. Its key technical feature: dual boosting by turbocharger and supercharger (‘Twincharger’). Its dynamic responsiveness is unlike that of any other natural gas vehicle previously seen. Excellent performance contrasts with maximum fuel efficiency here: the new Touran TSI EcoFuel is so economical that 100 kilometers in this van, with its 110 kW / 150 PS of power, only costs about 4.60 Euros (based on average price of natural gas in Germany, February 2009). Although the Touran TSI EcoFuel goes to work with a passion thanks to its ‘Twincharger’, the van consumes just 4.8 kilograms of natural gas per 100 kilometers when paired with a standard 6-speed transmission (129 g/km CO2; 7-speed-DSG: 4.7 kilograms and 126 g/km CO2).
Caddy Maxi EcoFuel
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is presenting the production version of the Caddy Maxi EcoFuel at the AMI. At Volkswagen, the ‘EcoFuel’ appended to a name traditionally stands for an engine powered by natural gas, a fuel that is as environmentally friendly as it is economical. An enormous plus of the Caddy Maxi EcoFuel: its range of 570 kilometers in pure natural gas driving, which is sensational for this type of vehicle. When the ‘reserve gasoline tank’ is factored in, this yields a theoretical total range of 700 kilometers.
