Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen All In Talks to be IRL Engine Suppliers

Motor Trend is reporting that these three along with Fiat are in talks to supply the IRL for the 2011 season. If you read oneighturbo.com, you know that Volkswagen already competes in the Formula 3 Euro Series. However, what these articles all miss is that Audi also competes in an open wheel series called the Formula Palmer Audi. It is a single engine series but the history/experience is there when it comes to engines..

The cars have 300bhp from a 1.8-litre turbocharged Audi engine, which also incorporates an overboost feature that increases power to 360bhp for an eight second burst. On the push of a button, each driver can call upon extra power to help complete a pass, or defend a challenge.

As more information has become available today about the IRLs work toward new engine guidelines in 2011, we’ve learned in addition to current engine-provider Honda, that Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen and Fiat have also been involved in the planning process. The manufacturers have been meeting with IRL officials, representatives from suspension-provider Dallara and tire-provider Firestone and six specialty engine manufacturers since May of 2008.

At the heart of the roundtable discussions are the changes to engine requirements that are slated to go into effect in 2011, though they may be pushed back to 2012 depending on the economy. The key elements of the changes have centered around the ‘Three E’s:’ efficient, economical and environmentally responsible.’ With the state of the world economy at present, a strong emphasis has been put on keeping costs down by minimizing changes for 2011 and in the near future. To that end, here’s what they’ve come up with so far:
