Clean Diesel Vehicles Race at New Jersey Motorsports Park for Sixth and Seventh Race in Series
In two races this weekend, the weather tested the driving ability of the young drivers as the Jetta TDI Cup Race series made a stop at New Jersey Motorsports Park for the sixth and seventh races of the season. All eyes were on the ADAC Polo Cup driver from Cape Town, South Africa, Shane Williams #10, who was the first ever guest driver in the Jetta TDI Cup. The 21 year old Williams secured pole position for the first qualifying race and ultimately won the first race of the weekend. Liam Kenney #35, Sterling, Va., won the second race of the weekend, his first visit to the top of the podium this season. Proving the extremely high level of competition and parity in the series, the Jetta TDI Cup has seen a different driver top the podium in each of the seven races this season. Michael wrote up a great report for us on last weekends racing at Thunderbolt! It was a crazy race and to think that Volkswagen Motorsports called the shots on the slicks… Unfortunately DeNino couldn’t capitalize on the great weekend from Iowa.
Rounds six and seven of the Jetta TDI Cup took place September 26 - 28 at New Jersey Motorsports Park, the only double header weekend on the 2008 calendar. Friday was a full day for all of the drivers, with a practice session and two qualifying sessions. All three sessions would see different conditions. The Volkswagen Golf GTI was unveiled in 1975 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The UK market had to wait a further two years for vehicles to arrive – 1977 saw 34 examples, all of them left hand drive, sold in the GTI’s first tentative year.
The GTI was powered by a 1,588 cc four cylinder engine with K-Jetronic fuel injection it developed 110 PS at 6,100 rpm and 103 lbs ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. This allowed the GTI, which weighed 810 kg unladen, to hit 60 mph from standstill in nine-seconds before reaching a top speed of 110 mph. Continue reading ‘1975 - 2008: The history of the Golf GTI’

New Model Debuts at the Paris Motor Show
Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is presenting the new models in the 911 range to the public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show. Further important debuts are the new Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2, the Cayman S Sport, and the Cayenne S Transsyberia.

Following the fastest generation change in the history of Porsche, all ten models in the 911 series – ranging from the Carrera Coupé all the way to the Targa 4S – are making their appearance together in Paris from 4 - 19 October, all in new design and with new technology. Introducing the latest generation of the 911, Porsche offers a truly unique series of sports cars setting the standard the world over also through their power units featuring DFI Direct Fuel Injection across the entire range. Indeed, the newly developed engines once again raise the already excellent performance and efficiency of Porsche’s classic flat-six technology to a significantly higher standard than ever before. And thanks to progressive emission management and engine technology the new power units fulfil even the strictest emission standards – EU5 in the European markets and LEV II in the USA. We just posted a few pieces on our gas shortage and why you need to use premium if your car calls for it. Here is a follow up we just read over on The Car Connection. As Colin Mathews put it “Could this Southeast phenomenon be a chilling harbinger of energy crises yet to come?”
Georgia and North Carolina commuters are being forced to telecommute, take public transit, carpool, or wait in 15+ minute lines due to the most significant fuel shortages since Presidents Carter and Nixon. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the American Petroleum Institute, by way of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, hurricanes Gustav and Ike bear the main responsibility.

Our Project New Beetle’s heart is the 1.8T engine from Volkswagen/Audi. If your reading this and do not know what this means, it’s a turbo-charged 1.8L engine. It started life at 150hp and now sees around 210hp. In stock form it requires premium grade gas at 91 RON. It has been chipped (GIAC USA) which is written for 91-93 RON.
Do yourself, your engine and wallet a favor, fill your tank with the rating it requires. If you purchased a high performance car requiring a 91 RON or higher, don’t try to save pennies/gal cause in the end it just may cost you more!
Also, please maintain your car. Check/replace air filter, tires inflated and fix CEL (Check Engine Lights). Example: your O2 Sensor is out which measures your air/fuel mixture. A bad one will result in poor gas mileage!
Why the need for premium gas?
The octane rating is a measure of the resistance of gasoline and other fuels to detonation (engine knocking) in spark-ignition internal combustion engines. High-performance engines typically have higher compression ratios and are therefore more prone to detonation, so they require higher octane fuel. A lower-performance engine will not generally perform better with high-octane fuel, since the compression ratio is fixed by the engine design. - wikipedia Continue reading ‘Why the need for premium gas?’
