2008 Auto Union Type-D Concept

Wow. Wow. Wow. This has to be one of the best works of taking a old auto design and creating a new concept that is just spot on. Even down the matching of engine power from then to now. The 650 W12 seems to be making its way into a few cars. Hmmm… More images after the jump!

2008 Auto Union Type-D Concept

The 2008 Auto Union Type-D concept is a creation of Lukas Vanek, a young designer from the Czech Republic. In 2008 Vanek graduated from the Europeo di Design (IED) in Torino, Italy after completing a three year postdiploma transportation design course. Prior to these studies Vanek had finished a masters course in industrial design at the TBU university in Zlin, where he was awarded a scholarship to study at IED. WTCC: Yvan Muller clinches new podium finish for SEAT

SEAT achieved another podium finish today, thanks to the second position of Yvan Muller in the first of two races of the WTCC staged today on the British racetrack of Brands Hatch. Under little favourable conditions, and driving against much lighter cars, the León TDI had a good performance scoring important points that keep SEAT in the lead of the constructors’ championship and Muller and Tarquini, who scored points in both races, in the top two spots of the drivers’ standings. Sand and mud instead of hot tarmac: Audi driver Martin Tomczyk swapped his Audi A4 DTM for a Volkswagen Race Touareg from the Dakar Rally for the first time. After brief instructions from Volkswagen factory driver Dieter Depping Martin Tomczyk bravely put the pedal to the metal at an offroad area near the Nürburgring.

“It’s incredible how fast the Race Touareg can be driven in rough terrain. At the wheel you immediately feel that you’re sitting in a thorough-bred rally vehicle,” marvelled the DTM star from Rosenheim, Bavaria. “The test drive was huge fun and I’m already looking forward to the next opportunity.” Martin Tomczyk will have it on 16 August: At the Red Bull X-Fighters freestyle motocross competition in Wuppertal he will pilot the 280-hp rally prototype again.

BTCC: Jason Plato wins Round 19 at Oulton Park

BTCC: Jason Plato wins Round 19 at Oulton Park Jason Plato became the first driver to win five races in the 2008 HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship, when he led from pole to win the first of three races at Oulton Park in his SEAT Sport UK Leon TDI.

In hot and sunny conditions (25°C air / 38°C track temperatures) and in front of a huge crowd, Jason set a new lap record (1:28.653 / 88.98mph) on the way to a convincing win – maintaining a 3.8 to 4 second lead before easing off on the 15th and final lap to win by 1.999 seconds.

Darren Turner dropped a place at the start, but was soon challenging Tom Chilton (Honda Civic) to regain 2nd place. He moved into 2nd with a good overtaking manoeuvre at Cascades, only for Chilton to hit his rear bumper and push the Leon TDI sideways as Darren turned into the left hander.

Darren did well to control the car and keep it on the asphalt, but the incident had dropped him down to 7th. With damaged rear suspension, it was difficult for Darren to recover and he eventually finished 6th.

BTCC Round 19
1. Jason Plato (SEAT Leon TDI)…22:30.779
2. Tom Chilton (Honda Civic)…22:32.778
3. Fabrizio Giovanardi (Vauxhall Vectra)…22:36.737
4. Colin Turkington (BMW 320si)…22:37.467
5. Tom Onslow-Cole (Vauxhall Vectra)…22:38.990

DTM: Three Audi A4 DTM cars at the top in rain

Earlier, we said Tom Kristensen was due for a win… well we all know Tom would not want a pole in this manner but when weather strikes, you take it.

The stoppage, due to a strong downpour caught a good amount of drivers in opposite ends of the unexpected. Mike Rockenfeller put his 2007 Audi A4 DTM on first row and had pole until Tom dropped him to second. Matin Tomczyk grabbed third. Timo Schider ended up 9th. Good for him, Green is back in 13th with Spengler in 16th.

Another surprise is Ralf Schumacher landing in 7th.

WTCC: SEAT Sport facing a difficult race

The qualifying session for the first race of the WTCC, to be staged tomorrow on the British Brands Hatch racetrack, did not bring favourable grid positions for the SEAT Sport drivers.
