Commanding victory for Shane Williams: The South African won the sixth race of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup at the Norisring ahead of Alexander Rambow from Zehdenick and the Dane Thor Qualmann.

Maximilian Sandritter clinched fourth place in the race that was marked by numerous duels, making him the best finisher in the rookie classification. “Local hero” Elia Erhart from Röttenbach, Franconia, came fifth on the Nuremberg city circuit.

“Congratulations to Shane Williams on his second Polo Cup victory,” was the message sent by Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen, who was witnessing the one-two victory of the Volkswagen Race Touareg at the Rallye dos Sertões in Brazil. “A look at the points score promises four more thrilling races as the fight for the championship remains open.”

With a perfect start and a spectacular overtaking manoeuvre in the first hairpin, Williams took the lead. “The outside line seems to suit me – that’s where I gained several places last year as well,” reported the 21-year-old from Cape Town. “Once I was running in front, I tried to drive as consistently as possible and to avoid making any mistakes.” His lead remained unthreatened as his rivals were keeping each other in check. Alexander Rambow, the Swede Andreas Simonsen, Thor Qualmann and Maximilan Sandritter fiercely fought for the other places. Simonsen was forced to retire after body contact: “I wanted to outbrake Rambow and we brushed each other in the process. Unfortunately, the suspension of my Polo was damaged in the incident, but things like this simply happen in racing,” said the 18-year-old from Gothenburg.

Alexander Rambow expressed relief after the race: “The Norisring is not my favourite track and that’s why I’m happy with second place,” said the 19-year-old, who continues ranking as the overall runner-up with a narrow gap (210 points) to Williams (224). Thor Qualmann (176) expressed satisfaction after clinching his third consecutive podium place as well: “The race was tough, but the duels were fair.” Maximilian Sandritter was the first rookie this year to drive the fastest race lap: “My primary goal continues to be winning the rookie classification, but the podium is moving within my reach.”

The two participants from Volkswagen’s international exchange programme, Mathew Hodges and Devin Robertson from South Africa, enjoyed their guest run. “From one lap to the next, things were going better. But not only the race was a great experience: the atmosphere in Nuremberg at the Euro 2008 semi-finale between Germany and Turkey was simply fantastic,” said Hodges, who finished in 14th place.
