Premiere of new ADAC Formula Masters with Volkswagen engine

World premiere at the gates of Wolfsburg: The newly created ADAC Formula Masters holds its first two races on Whitsun weekend at Oschersleben.

In the standard Formula ADAC powered by Volkswagen race car a production-based normally aspirated 1.6 litre, 145 hp engine with state-of-the-art FSI fuel injection guarantees efficient, swift and reliable power. In the “star of tomorrow” race series 22 ambitious youngsters representing seven nations will compete, including the rapid Finnish girl Emma Kimiläinen.

“After a successful cooperation lasting more than ten years between the ADAC and Volkswagen in supporting young touring car drivers, we are delighted to be active together in single-seater racing also,” explains Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “With our FSI engine we introduce an equally powerful and reliable power unit into the partnership and thus supply an ideal component for effective, high-quality and importantly a low cost feeder formula. At the same time we round off our programme for budding F1 stars with the ADAC Formula Masters below Formula 3.”

The close relationship with the production unit, used in many models, enables a cost-effective race engine with extraordinary reliability for motorsport. “The high torque levels and therefore responsive four-cylinder is designed for an entire season with 16 races and must only go for a scheduled rebuild afterwards,” explains Donatus Wichelhaus, Head of Engine Development at Volkswagen Motorsport.

The biggest modification compared to the production power-plant was the switch from wet to dry-sump lubrication. The engine, fitted longitudinally to the carbon monocoque, required a new exhaust system with catalytic converter and lambda sensor. In addition, the induction system and engine electronics were optimised for racing. To ensure absolute performance parity the engines are power tested and sealed three times. The standard electronic can also be checked for conformity with the regulations with a diagnostic device.

Eight weekends with 16 30-miute races are on the ADAC Formula Masters’ first calendar, including highlights like the guest appearance at the 24-hour race (22-24 May) and 1000-km race (15-17 August) at the Nürburgring and at the DTM-Finale at Hockenheim (24-26 October). The battle is not only for positions, points and a title but also for a lucrative amount of prize money of 100,000 Euro.
