Volkswagen Racing Cup: Snow at Oulton Park

Round 1 of the Volkswagen Racing Cup got off to a great start these past few days. Why do they race on Mondays?

This was the debut race for the new Jetta TSI Sport. evo magazine editor, Jethro Bovingdon put the Jetta TSI Sport in 15th place during qualifying. He took it to 10th during the race.

The surprise in the end, a Caddy TDI sat on podium twice! Amazing! Steve Chaplin put his New Beetle in 7th and 6th in the 2 races.

The dire Easter weather tried but failed to dampen the excitement of the opening rounds of the Volkswagen Racing Cup yesterday at Oulton Park, with spectators enjoying two enthralling battles against the elements by a quality field.

There were surprises galore - including two podium finishes for the entertaining Caddy TDI, its best-ever results - a tactically brilliant race win for Steve Wood and his Hankook-shod Golf GTI, and a dominant second-race victory in the snow for Paul Taylor’s Golf R32. New Audi A4 Avant in New York´s Times Square

New Audi A4 Avant in New York´s Times Square

The 2009 Audi A4 Avant will feature the 2.0 TFSI, a new high-powered four-cylinder turbocharged engine that has 211 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The current A4 Avant offers 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. The 2009 A4 Sedan will also offer drivers the 2.0 TFSI or the option of a 3.2 FSI V6, with 265 hp and the patented Audi Valvelift Technology (AVS).

Enhancements to the V6 include considerably lower inner friction and a valve actuation system called the Audi Valvelift System which varies the stroke of the intake valves. The engines will improve performance, while reducing fuel consumption versus previous generations.

A number of transmission options are also available, including a six-speed manual and tiptronic transmission, which is optional for the 3.2 FSI.

The Avant’s proportions have been reconfigured significantly from the previous generation model to emphasize both sport and practicality. The front overhang has been shortened, while the hood and wheelbase have increased in size. The new A4 Avant measures 15.42 feet in length, making it 4.72 inches longer than its previous model. Its body is considerably more rigid and safer in build than its predecessor, while still being approximately 10 percent lighter. Those proportions yield the largest luggage capacity in its class, with up to 50.5 cubic feet of cargo space.

Other points of emphasis in the interior and exterior design are the xenon plus headlights, which consist of 14 white light-emitting diodes, and a driver-oriented cockpit that borrows many features from the larger A8, including an electro-mechanical parking brake that also comes standard on other Audi models.

Technology options for the new model include a complete range of high-tech systems. These include the Audi parking system (a parking aid and standard for the A4 Avant), Audi lane assist (the lane departure warning system) and Audi side assist (which warns of hazards when changing lanes). The adaptive cruise control option maintains the distance to the vehicle in front.

When it comes to multimedia, the Audi A4 Avant will meet every user’s needs. The Audi Music Interface (AMI) allows for iPod connectivity and control. The navigation system with DVD including MMI is an additional upgrade option. Bluetooth connectivity for cell phones is included, as well. The car audio system is by Bang & Olufsen. A 505 watt, ten-channel amplifier controls 14 speakers.

Dramatic Ending to Oulton Park Opener for Team Modena

The opening round of the 2008 Avon Tyres British GT Championship proved to be a short one for Team Modena. On the exit of the first corner Piers Johnson was pushed wide by another car forcing the Lamborghini onto the grass, where it dug into the soft turf and was launched into a roll.

“I got a nice clean start, and got to the inside of the first corner. That put me on the right with a Viper on my left, and I didn’t want to be on the outside through Cascades, so I lifted off to let him past, but he kept squeezing me and I ended up on the grass. From then on I was just a passenger and unfortunately the car dug in and rolled over, and I have been told we did three rolls.”

Piers was unhurt in the dramatic incident, but the damage to the car will see the team miss the rest of the meeting.

Lamborghini take first British GT win

Awesome news! We’ve been keeping an eye on the weekend at Oulton Park with both the GT and Volkswagen Cup races. Tech 9 Motorsport, known for their Porsche development is racing a Lamborghini Gallardo this year.

Saturday was a great race for the Tech 9 and Gallardo but in the end showed them down by 4 laps. We still have no idea why.. Ferarri went 1-2-3 in that race.

Lamborghini take first British GT wing

Oliver Morley and Tom Ferrier made history at Oulton Park by becoming the first drivers to race a Lamborghini to victory in the Avon Tyres British GT Championship. Their Gallardo, run by Liverpool-based Tech 9 Motorsport, finished ahead of the Ferrari 430 of Michael Meadows and James Sutton, while Paul O’Neill and Steve Clark’s Dodge Viper claimed third. Volkswagen to field five Race Touareg vehicles in Central Europe Rally

Volkswagen will field five Race Touareg vehicles in the Central Europe Rally leading through Hungary and Romania from 20 to 26 April.

In addition, Volkswagen in the 2008 season will enter two factory vehicles in the cross-country “Rallye dos Sertoes” in Brazil from 18 to 28 June and intensively prepare for the 2009 Dakar Rally to be run through Argentina and Chile for the first time from 03 to 18 January.

“The Central Europe Rally represents a new challenge in cross-country rally sport, and we look forward to this challenge. We will field four factory vehicles and enter a fifth Race Touareg for the customer team Lagos,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “After the cancellation of the ‘Dakar’ in January our team is extremely motivated to show our strong performance capabilities. The new rally gives us an interesting and demanding platform for this.” After starting in Budapest on 20 April, the rally will be run over a 3,000-kilometre distance through Hungary and Romania and will end at Lake Balaton on 26 April.

Preparation for ASO rally with tests in Hungary

Volkswagen will field the five Race Touareg 2 vehicles originally planned for the 30th running of the Dakar Rally that was cancelled at short notice due to terrorist threat warnings. The four-wheel-drive prototypes powered by 280-hp TDI diesel engines will be driven by the 2007 cross-country world cup winners Carlos Sainz/Michel Périn (Spain/France) as well as by Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (South Africa/Germany), Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/South Africa) and by Dieter Depping/Timo Gottschalk (Germany/Germany). The cockpit of the Lagos Touareg will be occupied by Carlos Sousa/Andreas Schulz (Portugal/Germany). The preparations for the Central Europe Rally will include tests in Hungary.

The Central Europe Rally will be organised by the ASO, the French organiser of the Dakar Rally. With regard to organisation, safety/security and marketing, the new ASO rally in Hungary and Romania is to be on a par with the standards of the Dakar Rally. Kris Nissen: “We welcome the decision of the ASO to offer the Central Europe Rally as another opportunity to engage in top-calibre cross-country rally sport in addition to the highlight of the season, the traditional Dakar Rally.”

ALMS: Audi Lap of the Track: St. Petersburg, FL

Here is an excellent (on board) lap of the streets of St. Petersburg, where the American Le Mans Series heads next on April 5th. it really shows what a driver goes through during one lap… then take that and multiply it by a short race like St. Pete or the 24hrs of Le Mans. OUCH!

Audi driver Allan McNish talks us around a lap of the St. Petersburg street circuit behind the wheel of the Audi R10 TDI.

The Florida Sun Rises on 1552. Again.

If you’ve been in the Volkswagen/Audi tuning scene for a while then you’d know 1552 Design! Well they are back. They just held their open house a week ago (we couldn’t make it down to Sebring no swinging by 1552 Design). Look for some great things to come out of 1552 Design in the near future.

Head on over to the ‘tex for the rest of the article.

Only in the south is late winter appropriate for the grand opening of a tuning shop, but the mere mention of 1552 has historically been enough to draw a crowd.

That’s right, 1552 is back. Though technically it’s now “version 2,” the spirit that put 1552 Design on the map is alive and well in Sarasota, FL. After a couple of false starts, Brad Beardow (along with new partner Shawn Grawunde) decided to take another shot, and fifteen52 v.2 was launched January 1 of this year. The shop’s open house was held March 16, and over 100 guests showed up to catch a glimpse of the new space and show off their cars. The presence of a Performance VW photographer, as promised, certainly didn’t hurt.
