On our side of the pond, we have the second race of the Rolex Sports Car series at the GAINSCO Grand Prix of Miami. We are not huge fans of the Daytona Prototypes but htere are a few Porsche powered cars. During yesterdays practice we saw one of the Brumos Racing / Porsche Riley in second.

We love the GT class where we saw the Top 6 divided by three Porsche GT3 Cup’s and three Pontiac GXP.R’s.

Two commitments for the Audi R10 TDI

Just around the corner Audi will face a huge challenge here. We have our photographer credentials approved for St. Petersburg but our fingers are crossed in that we can make it down. It is our home town race and it will be our first LIVE reporting!

Two commitments for the Audi R10 TDI

Two races on one weekend

  • European Le Mans Series season opener at Barcelona
  • Second round of the Le Mans Series in St Petersburg

Even in its third year of racing the Audi R10 TDI still experiences some débuts: on the first weekend in April, the diesel-powered sportscar will compete simultaneously for the first time in two races, in America and in Europe. In St Petersburg (U.S. state of Florida), on Saturday (5 April), the second round of the 2008 American Le Mans Series will be staged. One day later, the European Le Mans Series kicks off with the 1000-kilometre race at Barcelona (Spain).

For the more than 650-hp strong Audi R10 TDI conditions in these two events could hardly be more different. The 2.918-kilometre track along St Petersburg’s southern marina is one of three city street circuits on the schedule of the 2008 American Le Mans Series. Lasting only 1:55 hours, St Petersburg is the second-shortest race of the season. Continue reading ‘Two commitments for the Audi R10 TDI’

Golf Bluemotion Match: First Drives

Nice review on the new Golf Bluemotion over on AutoEXPRESS. It received a 4/5 stars!

Golf Bluemotion Match: First Drives

If you think the only way of getting around never-ending fuel price rises and emissions-based taxes is to down-size your vehicle, think again.

Your options are no longer limited to choosing between a city car or a hybrid – as Volkswagen has added the Golf to its Bluemotion line-up.

The tried-and-tested 1.9-litre TDI diesel engine has been fitted with a fresh turbocharger, while the five-speed manual gearbox benefits from revised ratios to maximise economy. Aerodynamic enhancements, as well as harder-compound tyres for lower rolling resistance, complete the changes.

All eyes on the Le Mans champions and the ‘living workshop’

This year at the Techno-Classica in Essen, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, and its Classic Customer Centre will be giving visitors a glimpse behind the scenes. The company’s Classic department, which has its home on the main Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen site, will be on show from 27th to 30th March 2008 at the greatest vintage car fair in the world. Under the spotlight will be its product and service range in connection with repair, maintenance, care, restoration and the procurement of original spare parts for Classic Porsche models.
On the Porsche stand in Hall 3 the emphasis will be on detailed advice provided by Porsche’s own restoration specialists. The experts will be happy to answer visitors’ questions – ranging from the availability of spare parts for Porsche Classic models to the maintenance and servicing of historic vehicles. Porsche drivers who enjoy working on their Classic vehicles themselves will also be well served: there will be a large range of literature available on the stand, from owners’ manuals through parts catalogues and CDs to repair instructions. In addition, the ‘living workshop’, in which Porsche specialists will be demonstrating their skills to enthusiasts and experts alike, will give visitors a chance to see original works’ restoration.

As well as the Classic Customer Centre, the approximate 800 square metres of exhibition space will house eight Porsche clubs displaying various privately-owned vehicles. Collectors and souvenir hunters will be able to view the current product range from the ‘Porsche Design Driver’s Selection’.

Porsche lovers will particularly relish the various exhibits on display: for example, a current 911 Turbo from Porsche Exclusive is shown side by side with another 911 Turbo dating from 1974, privately-owned by Ferry Porsche. The top attraction for motorsport fans will definitely be the vehicle which won the 1971 ‘24 Hours of Le Mans’. The Porsche 917 short-tail, racing as 22, set the standard as a light-construction prototype with a special magnesium lattice-tube frame. Driven by Dr. Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep, the vehicle won Porsche the second of a current total of 16 victories at Le Mans and set the still unbeaten records for distance (5,335.313 km) and average speed (222.304 km/h).

… on 11th Ave.

Garage419 is at it again, this time street racing in New York. The piece is not that great and the driving is not that good considering whose in the cars… owell. fun anyways!

Bryce Miller and the Farnbacher-Loles 911 GT3 Cup Car tear it up against Roger Garbow and the Farnbacher-Loles Porsche Cayman GTR during the Opening Ceremonies for the New York International Auto Show. Thanks to the NYPD and New York State Police for closing down 11th Avenue for us to have a good time. Who won? It was close… and cold played a BIG role in the outcome, but the GT3 Cup crossed the line a bit faster than the Cayman GTR. Hosted by Matt Farah of the New York Motor Club…

Automobile sportiness at the Volkswagen Classic stand in Hall 7 at TechnoClassica 2008 in Essen

Automobile sportiness is the order of the day at the Volkswagen brand stand in Hall 7: the presentation focuses on the various generations of the Scirocco.

“Scirocco” is the term for a hot wind from the Sahara blowing towards the Mediterranean coast. From 1974, though, Volkswagen offered its customers much more than just hot air with the Scirocco. Like the ground-breaking Golf concept, the Scirocco brought a breath of fresh air to the Wolfsburg model program. In the early 1970s, Volkswagen opened up to new technical philosophies and finally said goodbye to the monoculture of air-cooled engines. Based on the Golf, which went into production in March 1974, Giorgio Giugiaro designed a smart and sporty hatchback body. With its new sports car, initially available as the 85 bhp Scirocco TS, Volkswagen brought pleasure to the hearts of sporty driving enthusiasts everywhere.

Over half a million of the first Scirocco generation were built from 1974 to 1981. There was a wide choice of equipment and engine configurations: the engine range spanned the 1.1-liter 50 bhp model to the 110 bhp version in the GTI. The second generation of the

Scirocco followed in 1981. Over 291,000 units of this version were also produced by Karmann until 1992. Unlike the Scirocco I, the successor was created at the Wolfsburg Design Center and was slightly more powerful, with over ten engine variants ranging from the 60 bhp, 1.3-liter model to the 16V, 139 bhp version.

The Volkswagen brand stand at TechnoClassica is showcasing five different Scirocco models. The three from the first generation are:

Scirocco (1973): 1974 model year, vehicle identification number 1, 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 51 kW/70 bhp, 3-gear automatic transmission, diamond silver metallic

Excitingly sensible: Volkswagen Scirocco 1974 – 1992

Scirocco GTI (1976): 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 81 kW/110 bhp, 4-gear manual transmission, ancona metallic

Excitingly sensible: Volkswagen Scirocco 1974 – 1992

Scirocco GT (1978): 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 51 kW/70 bhp, 4-gear manual transmission, viper green metallic
while the two second generation models on display are:

Excitingly sensible: Volkswagen Scirocco 1974 – 1992

Scirocco “White Cat” (1985): 1.8-liter gasoline engine with 66 kW/90 PS, 4+E gearbox, alpine white

Excitingly sensible: Volkswagen Scirocco 1974 – 1992

Scirocco GTX 16V (1986): 1.8-liter gasoline engine with 95 kW/129 bhp, 5-gear manual transmission, Mars red.

Excitingly sensible: Volkswagen Scirocco 1974 – 1992

By choosing the Scirocco as the star of its presentation, the Volkswagen brand is demonstrating that sporty dynamics and attractive styling are not inconsistent with the everyday suitability of a sport coupé. The sportiness of the Scirocco is derived from its unique combination of driving pleasure and day-to-day use – typical Volkswagen.
