ALMS: Winter Test at Sebring International Raceway

We were headed down to the testing days to post live updates and photo’s but due to illness, we won’t be able to. However when testing starts we will bring you what we can live or close to it. We do have someone down there shooting so we will get a gallery up asap.

For those looking for a preview of the 2008 American Le Mans Series, the waiting is nearly over. The fourth-annual Winter Test at Sebring International Raceway starts Monday and will set the stage for the 10th season of the American Le Mans Series, one that promises to be the most competitive since its founding in 1999.

Tickets for the test are $10 per day. Access to the paddock and camping are not allowed during the Winter Test.

Fifteen teams representing eight different manufacturers are entered for the three-day test – Acura, Audi, Ferrari, Lola, Mazda, Panoz, Peugeot and Porsche. It will serve as a warm-up for the 56th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida, the opening race of the 2008 season.

Among the highlights of the Winter Test include Peugeot’s North American debut with its diesel-powered factory prototype, the introduction of Acura’s second generation ARX-01b chassis and the first public running of the updated Ferrari F430 GT.

Updated news, timing information, photos, audio and video from the Winter Test will be available at americanlemans.com throughout the week.

The 2008 season opens with the 56th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida on Saturday, March 15. The race will start at 10 a.m. ET and will be broadcast live by SPEED, which will begin its coverage at 9:30 a.m. American Le Mans Radio and IMSA’s Live Timing & Scoring will be available at americanlemans.com.

AUDI enters the 2008 motorsport season and Le Mans Series (LMS) with a high-calibre driving squad and the most successful Le Mans team ever. Audi Sport Team Joest enters two of the latest generation Audi R10 TDI for Dindo Capello and Allan McNish and Alexandre Prémat and Mike Rockenfeller in every race of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest organised endurance championship.

2008 Fresh From Florida 200 at Daytona

News from Friday’s Fresh From Florida race. Back in October, we posted news regarding APR’s motorsport entries in the 2008 Grand-Am Koni Challenge series.

Bildon Motorsport has teamed up with GSM Racing this year and brings back their Volkswagen GTI to the series. GSM also has an Audi TT entered!

Friday’s race came and went, almost overshadowed by the Rolex 24 of Daytona. We were even to busy to watch or report on it, live.

Thursdays first practice saw an Acura and two Chevy Cobalts go 1-2-3. The first GTI was that of APR with Pobst/White in 10th. The second was Bass/von Molke in 23rd. GSM’s GTI was 34th with the last APR entry posting no time. The GSM Audi TT posted no time as well.

The second practice was much better with Pobst/White placing 3rd. Bass/von Molke was 15th and GSM’s GTI 46 with the TT in 47th. No time posted for the third APR GTI.

Qualifying saw Acura TSX got 1-2 and a Honda Accord take 3rd. The top GTI was that of Pobst/White in 8th. Bass/von Molke came in 31st, GSM’s GTI in 34th, with no times from practice the APR GTI of Tucker/ Zabinski pulled in 36th and the Audi TT posted no time.

There was another practice on race day but in the end it was Acura’s taking the top 4 places. APR’s Pobst/White placed 21st, Tucker / Zabinski 23rd and Bass/von Molke 41st.

GSM Motorsport’s GTI placed 42nd and the Audi TT 47th.

We have no official follow up’s from the teams/drivers but will post if we do.

Rolex 24 at Daytona

We are way behind in posting from this weekends Rolex 24 at Daytona and Fresh From Florida 200. We have been moving the office around.

Either way, as we type it is now 9:10am with 4.5hrs left. It has been a complete weather event with rain on and off since the start. Both classes have seen their share of lead changes and attrition!

Datonya Protype class:
Alex Job Racing with their Porsche/Crawford car sits in 3rd overall, 1min back.
The Brumos Racing Porsche / Riley sits in 9th 17 laps back.
The Vision Racing Porsche / Crawford sits 12th, 22laps back.
Spirit of Daytona - Vision Racing Porsche / Crawford is 19th, 42 laps back.

*The Spirit of Daytona car uses the V8 out of the Cayenne.

GT class:

TRG (The Racers Group) has a total of 7 cars (Porsche’s) entered. Right now 3 of them, #67,#66, #64 sit in 2-4. A Mazda RX-8 sits in first. We are not sure where the 2 TRG’s lost laps to the Mazda.

Cong Fu Cheng completes Volkswagen’s Formula 3 line-up

Cong Fu Cheng completes Volkswagen’s Formula 3 line-up Eight drivers from six nations – Volkswagen’s international line-up for the Formula 3 Euro Series is complete. The signing of Cong Fu Cheng from China concludes Volkswagen’s driver selection process.

In the Europe-wide championship the 23-year-old Cheng will be piloting a Dallara F308 Volkswagen powered by a two-litre engine from Wolfsburg that delivers about 210 hp.

As engine supplier Volkswagen equips a total of eight junior racers: Maximilian Götz (Germany) and Jens Klingmann (Germany) as well as Cong Fu Cheng (China) and Martin Plowman (Great Britain) will compete for the Italian Team RC Motorsport, for the French Signature squad, the Red Bull juniors Stefano Coletti (Monaco) and Jean Karl Vernay (France) as well as Franck Mailleux (France) and Eduardo Mortara (France/Italy) will contest the series.

“Cong Fu Cheng prevailed against his competitors in our evaluation course thanks to his speed and experience. He ranks among Asia’s top motorsport talent,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “This marks the completion of the line-up we’ve been shooting for. The time up to the season opener in April we will use to jointly – and carefully – prepare ourselves with the eight juniors and the two teams. After tests with the new evolution stage of our engine the drivers’ agenda will also include fitness training and team building.”

Cheng, who hails from Beijing and now lives in Oxford, U.K., looks forward to the collaboration. “I’m very happy about the opportunity to contest the Formula 3 Euro Series with support from Volkswagen,” says Cheng, who is also known as “Frankie”. “I will give everything to be successful with Volkswagen. My goal is to be able to fight for podium places as soon as possible.” Previously, the 23-year-old was contesting the British Formula 3 Championship and he is currently representing China’s colours in the A1GP racing series in which he already clinched a podium result.

After promising tests last year, 2008 will see Volkswagen participating in all the rounds of the Formula 3 Euro Series for the first time. The season of the championship that features a strong field and fierce fighting will kick off together with the DTM at Hockenheim on 12/13 April, comprising a total of 20 races on ten weekends in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Spain.

The Volkswagen Individual product offensive proceeds to the next round; the elegant but sporty R-Line accessory package was recently also made available for the Touareg. The ‘Exterieur’ and ‘Plus’ packages include a range of sporty design features and can be ordered individually or together as desired.

The R-Line ‘Plus’ package comprises 20-inch Omanyt-type alloy wheels, a four-spoke multifunctional leather steering wheel, aluminium pedals featuring the R logo and sports-style seats with nappa leather trim. Prices for this package of optional extras for the Touareg start at €5,350.

The ‘Exterieur’ package features a combination of sporty extras such as a radiator grill with a dual-rib design and a matte chrome finish, and stylish body-colour bumpers and sills. The impressive looking package is rounded off with two oval exhaust tips and a high-performance chassis setup that lowers the body by 20 millimetres. Prices for the ‘Exterieur’ package start at €4,450, while the combination of both packages is available from €7,630. They can be ordered for all engine types (with the exception of the Touareg R5 TDI).
