Audi: Tough day for Audi

Short course, punctures, spins etc seem to get the better of the R10 TDI’s today. Yes Audi won the LMP1 class and gained valuable points, but they weren’t up to the great day the Penske Porsche RS Spyders had.

Race starts in 20min on CBS, 1pm EST.

INGOLSTADT, Germany - Reigning champions Dindo Capello (Italy) and Allan McNish (Scotland) scored extended their lead in the American Le Mans Series at Lime Rock (US state of Connecticut) scoring their fifth consecutive class win and thus retaining the 100 percent LM P1 category winning record of the Audi R10 TDI in its 15th race. Their team mates Emanuele Pirro (Italy) and Marco Werner (Germany) finished fourth in the LM P1 class despite an unfortunate accident.

The race on the shortest track of the season was incident packed as expected. Taking advantage of the enormous torque of his V12 TDI engine, Allan McNish moved from seventh position on the grid to third at the start. After 30 minutes, the Scotsman was running second just behind the pole sitting LM P2 Porsche when he was blocked twice in a row by the same backmarker at the end of the start-finish straight. On the first occasion, the Audi driver spun dropping from second to fifth position. The second time, contact caused damage to the front of the Audi R10 TDI. The spins and front bodywork change cost McNish and Capello a total of three laps and any chance to fight for overall glory. From tenth position, the reigning champions fought their way back to fifth place making up two laps with the help of good strategy.

The race of the #2 Audi R10 TDI seemed to have come to a premature end just before the end of the first hour due to a spectacular accident when Marco Werner spun off the last corner at high speed due to a puncture impacting the guard rail heavily backwards. That the #2 R10 TDI was able to get back on the track 55 minutes later with applause of the spectators was thanks to the strength of the car and the quick work of the mechanics from Team Audi Sport North America. Emanuele Pirro and Marco Werner were able to just complete the minimum distance of 70 percent to be classified finishing fourth in the LM P1 class and scoring ten precious points.

Quotes after the race

Dr Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport): “We had quite a good pace today but we had to go to the limit – and this is very risky on a race track where overtaking is extremely difficult. Unfortunately both of our cars were delayed by contacts and accidents. The accident of Marco (Werner) was caused by a cut tire – most likely caused by running over debris. This caused him impacting backwards very heavily. It was a great achievement of the team to repair the car thus allowing them to score points.”

Dindo Capello (Audi R10 TDI #1): “Looking at the race positively, we at least somehow claimed maximum points again but for me, it was one of the most disappointing races in the American Le Mans Series I’ve ever had. Allan (McNish) and I had more incidents in today’s race than we’ve experienced in three full seasons of racing. The car unusually was very difficult to drive but we both decided that we should nevertheless push hard throughout the race despite these problems. We have managed to extend our championship lead but on this occasion, mainly due to the bad luck of our ‘sister’ car.”

Allan McNish (Audi R10 TDI #1): “I made a good start to take third and inherited second place when Chris Dyson was penalized for a jump start. We knew that it would be a difficult race and traffic would be an important factor. I encountered the same backmarker twice, at exactly the same point of the circuit. The first time I spun after locking up the rears without damage but the second time, when I again dived down the inside, he moved over and we made contact damaging the nose of the Audi which effectively put us out of contention for overall honors.”

Emanuele Pirro (Audi R10 TDI #2): “Of course there is some disappointment because we wanted to do better. But the most important thing is that Marco (Werner) is okay after his big crash. It proved one more time that our Audi R10 TDI is very strong. This track is not very safe and he crashed in the quickest corner. After that the mechanics did an unbelievable job putting the car together to make us cover enough distance to score points and still have some hope for the championship. This was the nice part of the day. My race wasn’t easy because the car was not perfect after the crash.”

Marco Werner (Audi R10 TDI #2):
“This was not our day. Due to the accident we lost more ground to our ‘sister’ car which took another class victory. Now it’s becoming tight for us in the championship. I hope we’ll finally have more luck in the next races. When I suddenly lost the car entering the corner, I had absolutely no explanation for this. Now we know it was a puncture.”

Dave Maraj (Team Director Audi Sport North America): “This was a tough day for the team. The mechanics have done a very good job to get the #2 car out again after the accident. We made a few mistakes today. You have to pay for when you make mistakes. Let’s hope we do better in the next races.”

ALMS: Lime Rock Park

Along with the SPEED World Challenge racing, Audi will be at Lime Rock for the first time with the R10 TDI’s. Fresh from their win at Le Mans and car rebuilding ;) they will have their hands full. Lime Rock is a short road course coming in at 1.54 mile with 8 turns. With the Audi’s weight and LMP2 agility, it will be a race down to the finish during the 2:45min race.

Weather might also be an issue this weekend but it does look good Sat & Sun so who knows…

Dumas, Penske Porsche take Lime Rock pole

Actually Mother Nature won on this day.. she decided to rain on the qualifying and had it canceled. In the end, times were based on Friday’s practice.. ugh!

The R10 TDI is making it’s first appearance at Lime Rock. Again, a tough task ahead as this is a short course with turns. The heavier R10 TDI might have the power and grunt but the LMP2’s are lighter and more agile. We shall see.

Penske’s Romain Dumas is on the overall pole at Lime Rock in the Porsche RS Spyder for the second year in a row.
Romain Dumas claimed his second overall pole position at Lime Rock Park on Friday as rain and lightning forced the cancellation of qualifying for the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix. Dumas and Timo Bernhard will start at the head of the grid for Penske Motorsports and Porsche for the sixth round of the 2007 American Le Mans Series.

Storm clouds rolled into Lime Rock early in the afternoon, bringing heavy rain and lightning with them. With a chance of rain looming for later in the afternoon plus concerns for driver safety, IMSA officials decided to set the lineup based on Friday morning’s practice times. That put Dumas and his Porsche RS Spyder on pole position and Dyson Racing’s Porsche of Guy Smith and Chris Dyson on the outside front row as LMP2 teams held the top six positions.

Near the end of the morning session, team members warned Dumas about the chance of rain during the afternoon. As a result, the Frenchman picked up the pace just in case.

“Last year at Mosport we had the same situation and thought that we had to push harder in practice because it might rain during qualifying,” said Dumas, who led a total of 68 laps last year. “We did not use new tires and we did not maximize our fuel situation. But we did push for qualifying speed. And it paid off. The setup wasn’t an issue because we were here on Tuesday testing.”

So was Dyson Racing. And unlike Dumas’ car, the Poughkeepsie, NY-based team did elect to put on new rubber at the end of the morning practice. The move, like Penske’s paid off.

“Chris will be starting tomorrow and the strategy is easy from where I’ll be sitting: lead going into Turn 1, lead coming out of Turn 1 and just keep going,” Smith said.

The Audi R10 TDI of Allan McNish and Dindo Capello will start first in P1 but seventh overall in the diesel’s Lime Rock debut.
Allan McNish will start first in LMP1 but seventh overall in the Audi R10 TDI. After winning for the second year in a row at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the diesel-powered prototype is at Lime Rock for the first time. McNish and Dindo Capello won last year’s race in the finale for the highly successful Audi R8.

McNish’s best time Friday morning was a 46.419, good enough for a 0.225-second cushion over the sister car of Emanuele Pirro and Marco Werner fresh off their 24 Hour of Le Mans win in France.

“The Audi R10 TDI is making its debut here at Lime Rock so we needed as much track time and dry weather running as possible,” McNish said. The LMP2 cars have already shown they are very quick on this short track. Our R10 TDI is a heavy car and on this undulating track it shows. It’s definitely going to be a tough race for us but with Audi’s experience on and off the track with race strategy, we’ll give it everything.”

One of the Audi’s began the previous race at Utah’s Miller Motorsports Park on the third row of the grid but took the lead at the end of the first turn using its tremendous torque. But Lime Rock’s front stretch is considerably shorter and narrower, which will make such a move nearly impossible.

“I think where we are on the grid is where we would have ended up if we had to qualify today,” McNish said. “Where we are is where we are in the field. I think we can use this time to find out what changes we can do to make the car more comfortable for the race tomorrow. At this point, I don’t even see a podium finish tomorrow.”

Tomas Enge captured his second straight GT2 pole and third of the season in Petersen/White Lightning’s Ferrari.
Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing claimed its second straight GT2 pole and third of the season thanks to Tomas Enge’s time of 52.431 in the team’s Ferrari F430 GT. Enge and Darren Turner won at Miller Motorsports Park in the Czech star’s return to the Series following a devastating crash at St. Petersburg.

Enge was 0.707 seconds faster than the Risi Ferrari of Jaime Melo and Mika Salo, class championship leaders. Next was the Panoz Esperante GTLM of Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand for Panoz Team PTG.

“This morning everything ran smoothly,” Enge said. “The car was not easy handle but it ran fast. We were actually surprised that we are so far ahead of the competition considering how short the track is. This weekend started out good like it did at Salt Lake City. We are pretty sure that it can end the same way.”

Round Six of the American Le Mans Series is the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix, set for 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 7 at Lime Rock Park. CBS Sports will televise the race at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 8. American Le Mans Radio will have live coverage at americanlemans.com, which also will feature IMSA Live Timing & Scoring.

TTAC: Triple White New Beetle Convertible Review

Not the greatest of review’s and I completely disagree with the first sentence.. but whatever. There are also some good and bad comments. Personally, I’ve been a VW driver since the age of 14. When the New Beetle concept was launched, I said I wanted one. I know have one. It’s slightly modified ;)

I love it and will keep driving it.

Now did VW hit the mark with this? Yes and no. VW seem’s to be draggin their feet with the New Beetle. Either make it better or drop it. Small updates and semi collectibles (nostalgia) aren’t doing it.

Triple White New Beetle Convertible

There are only two reasons why anyone would buy a New Beetle convertible: a craving for cute or a need for nostalgia. Once you rule out these emotional drivers (so to speak), you’re far better off in any number of more economical and practical machines. But that’s OK, isn’t it? Acquiring a Ferrari isn’t exactly a rational decision. So analyzing the New Beetle’s desirability comes down to this: does it suck enough to put off the retro-fashionistas?

The New Beetle’s (NB) exterior remains unchanged since the model’s ‘06 refresh. Pedants will immediately note that our Triple White special edition tester has a black convertible top. The top’s cover– a fundamentally useless bag that encloses the lid when it’s in the open pram position– justifies the moniker.

Lamborghini Gallardo V8

This thing is HOT! Esp. in white!!!!!!

Lamborghini Gallardo V8

Our sources at the Nurburgring have photographed what may be a V8-powered Lamborghini Gallardo prototype

A slightly revised front fascia, and a visibly reworked exhaust out back suggest that some engine changes are being explored. This Gallardo is reportedly being benchmarked with an Audi RS4, which is powered by a high-revving 420 hp V8 4.2FSI power plant. The RS4’s V8 would be a logical engine choice if Lamborghini decides to move ahead with a slightly more sedate (and affordable) Gallardo variant.

Our ‘ring spies tell us that this revised Gallardo is noticeably quieter than the typical V10-powered version, when running all-out on the track.

Audi RS6

Looks great to me! Bubye BMW & AMG!

Audi RS6 - Auto Express

We catch Audi’s RS6 testing at the ‘ring

As a direct competitor to the Mercedes E63 AMG and BMW M5 which have both been presented a while ago, Audi is planning to offer the RS6, seen here undergoing final tests at the German Nurburgring.

The bigger air intakes in the front bumper, the wider fenders and the diffuser at the rear are the key clues. While the S models have four round exhaust pipes, the RS models will receive oval pipes as their distinguishing feature. Shown in these spy photos is the saloon, but the new RS6 will also be available as an estate.

Powered by the same V10 engine as the S6, but with some help from a turbo delivering about 520-550 bhp, this Audi will give the M5 and E63 AMG a strong challenge. The RS6 will debut in Frankfurt in September this year.
