Spengler fastest again, Prémat second
Even though, as usual, the focus in the second test of the DTM is rather on preparation for the race, the times became significantly better on Friday afternoon. Bruno Spengler, who had already been dominating proceedings with his AMG Mercedes C-Class in the first test, did even better and set the fastest time again with 48.967 seconds.
The only driver to match the speed of the Franco-Canadian at the Norisring was Alexandre Prémat. With the Audi A4 DTM, the Frenchman was only four thousandths of a second down on Spengler. No other driver lapped the track under 49 seconds.
Behind the top two drivers, five more Mercedes-Benz drivers ranked among the fastest in the field. Paul di Resta, Bernd Schneider and Jamie Green occupied third to fifth place. Sixth place for Mathias Lauda with the 2006-spec Mercedes meant that he was quicker than two times’ Formula 1 world champion, Mika Häkkinen, who was seventh.
Poker or problems? That was the question concerning the current Audi A4 DTMs of points leader, Martin Tomczyk, Tom Kristensen, Mattias Ekström and Timo Scheider. The quartet ranked almost at the end of the field in 14th, 16th, 17th and 19th place respectively. The true situation will only become apparent in qualifying o Saturday afternoon. From 13.28 h onwards, the grid positions will be decided. The ARD is broadcasting qualifying from Nuremberg live from 13.45 h onwards.
