Record crowd for DTM season presentation in Düsseldorf

In pleasant summer weather, the DTM presented itself in front of a record crowd in the city centre of Düsseldorf. One week before the season opener at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg, the sports city played host for the official season presentation of the most popular international touring car championship for the second time running. Not only the weather, but also the crowd meant a new record: according to the police, 180,000 visitors came to the temporary race track at the Königsallee.

DTM presetation

“A great weekend for the city. Düsseldorf was the main attraction in Nordrhine-Westfalia“, said mayor Joachim Erwin, delighted with the successful DTM-presentation. Next to the mayor, German actresses Alexandra Kamp and Alexandra Klim, actor Frank te Neues, anchorwoman Collien Fernandes, German Idols-star Mike-Leon Grosch and multiple luge champion Sylke Otto were among the guests.

A diverse and comprehensive action-programme prepared the spectators for the upcoming DTM-season. The extension of the track compared to last year ensured that there was plenty of room for all the spectators, who had a good view of the action. Demonstration laps with the DTM-cars from Audi and Mercedes-Benz were part of the programme, just like pit stop competitions, interviews and autograph sessions with the DTM-drivers, who visibly enjoyed their first public appearance after the long winter break. “The start of the DTM-season couldn’t have been any better. Nice weather and thousands of enthusiastic fans are making me look forward to Hockenheim even more“, said Audi works-driver, Mattias Ekström. Mercedes-Benz-star Mika Häkkinen commented: “When you have the paddock crowded with 35,000 people like at Hockenheim, it is already something special, but the echo among the fans here in Düsseldorf is topping everything I have experienced so far. In the best possible way, that is.“

The support categories Formula 3 Euro Series, Formula BMW Germany, ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup, SEAT Leon Supercopa and Porsche Carrera Cup presented themselves in front of the impressive backdrop of Düsseldorf’s noble shopping boulevard. The fact that motor sport and music get together very well was once again demonstrated on the show stage. The closing highlight of the day was the 30 minutes’ live act by British band “All Saints”. The “ARD Sportschau”, the sports TV show, in which the focus was on the DTM, was broadcast live from the Königsallee.

ALMS: Audi now in lead, crazy first 1/2 of race

54 minutes into the Grand Prix of Long Beach and we have a great race! As we expect from a street course and add only 100 minutes of racing, equals a sprint for these cars!

Well FUCKKKKKKK!!! As I typed the news above, Jörg Bergmeister slammed into of all cars the leading #2 Audi, punctures the Michelin and now they are back in 12th after the pit, 28sec off lead. Bergmeister was in the leading #45 Flying Lizard Porsche….

McNish has climbed up to 6th, with a pit under his car so…

We are now 1:02 into it, Franchitti should be coming in..

More soon.. I told you it was nutz!!!

Ok. Franchitti is in the pits.

Werner, Audi to the top in warm-up

Looking forward to some good action today from Long Beach! Since GT1 is all Corvette again… snore! GT2 should be hot with the Lizards, Risi and even the local boys (to me), Panoz, were showing some speed in the warm-up!

Audi R10 TDI at Long Beach

The Grand Prix of Long Beach, Round 3 of the 2007 American Le Mans Series, is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. PT on Saturday, April 14. SPEED will provide same-day broadcast coverage from 8 to 10:30 p.m. ET. MotorsTV in Europe, SPEED Latin America and 7TV in Russia will carry the race live. American Le Mans Radio and IMSA’s Live Timing & Scoring will be available at americanlemans.com.

The stage is set for the Grand Prix of Long Beach and the American Le Mans Series’ first race at the historic southern California venue. Marco Werner turned in the best lap in Saturday morning’s 20-minute warmup session for Audi and its diesel-powered R10 TDI. The German’s time of 1:14.346 came on his final lap of the session and beat out Penske Motorsports’ lead Porsche RS Spyder by 0.224 seconds.

The session saw a number of changes at the top of the timing sheet. Acura, Porsche and Audi all were quickest at one point with the P2 Acuras and Porsches sitting 1-2 overall before Werner’s lap in Audi’s lead P1.

Romain Dumas was the quickest driver for Penske, less than 0.2 seconds ahead of Butch Leitzinger in Dyson Racing’s Porsche RS Spyder, the best showing for a Dyson car this weekend. Third in P2 and fourth overall was this afternoon’s pole-sitting Andretti Green Racing Acura ARX of Bryan Herta at 1:14.906. Teammate Dario Franchitti qualified first overall Friday.

New VW.com launched

Man am I extremely disappointed in this but what do you expect from CP&B! I need to contact a friend who went to their new Boulder diggs.

It’s late for me but I’ll type a few thoughts… Overall I am not impressed with the aesthetic, palette, bulky nasty flash work etc. This big ass honkin nav bar thing that you can drag around (whoopie, we did that years ago) looks to mimic an old school tape deck with buttons. The blue glass glow is reminiscent of Apple back in the “berry” days..

The configuration piece is just reused/re-purposed from the GTI Fast launch.. That was great and should have been left to that.

The Compare-o-tron.. WTF! Big let down. It just goes so far yet doesn’t go far enough.

Flying Lizard Porsches Qualify 2nd and 3rd for Long Beach Grand Prix

Awesome news for the Flying Lizard team! Now lets kick some Risi Ferarri ass tomorrow! :P
Flying Lizard Porsches

The Lizard squad qualified second and third in GT2 today for Saturday’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, the third race of the 12-race ALMS season and the second of four street circuits this year.

Patrick Long brought the No. 44 into second position, just behind Mika Salo in the the No. 62 Risi Ferrari. This is highest qualifying position for the No. 44 since Lonnie Pechnik qualified on the pole at Mosport in 2004. In the No. 45, Jörg Bergmeister qualified third, just three hundredths of a second behind Long.

Tomorrow, the two Lizard Porsches will start together on the grid when the race gets the green flag at 4 pm Pacific Time in downtown Long Beach. Jörg Bergmeister and Johannes van Overbeek, both second in the ALMS GT2 drivers’ points chase, will pilot the Lizard’s No. 45 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. In the No. 44 Porsche, Long and Darren Law will complete the team’s lineup.

Long commented on the session, “Things felt pretty good out there. It took a few laps to get the tires up to temperature, but once there, the Porsche was handling well. We’ve had almost no setup time, so the trick is to quickly get to something we’re comfortable with and stay there. The team’s obviously learned a lot about the new Porsches at Sebring and St. Pete because they came here with a good starting point and we’ve got a solid car for tomorrow.”

Jörg added, “I didn’t really get a perfect lap together in qualifying, but I’m pretty happy with the Porsche and we should have a good racecar too. Just like at St. Pete, this is going to be a tight race. In the end, it’s all about finishing the race — our goal is to finish and finish on the podium.”

Darren Law, who drove the No. 44 in this morning’s short practice session, added “The crew did a great job delivering a completely ready car for this morning’s short session. All of the drivers learned a lot this morning though about what the race will be like. It’s a hard course. In most corners there is just one line: if the prototypes are trying to push through and you go off line you are in trouble. And on the slow corners, the prototypes are no faster than the GT2 cars which makes it pretty tricky to navigate. Should be fun!”

The 1 hour and 40-minute race starts at 4 pm PT on Saturday April 14, and will be broadcast tape-delayed on SpeedTV on April 14 starting at 5 pm PT.

The race also will be broadcast by ALMS Radio with Live Timing and Scoring available at americanlemans.com.

Flying Lizard will broadcast their radio transmissions live during the race. For more on this and on the team’s 2007 schedule, see www.lizardms.com.

ALMS: Audi in good position at Long Beach

Looks like Audi and the R10 TDI will have their work cut out for them tomorrow! With a short race duration (1:40), traffic and LMP2 cars in front of them, it’s going to be a hard one in Long Beach. As we said before, the lighter LMP2’s and GT’s even with less horsepower will not need to get out of the way. They can move rather well in this tight street course.

Check back here for all the latest on Audi and Porsche at Long Beach. Race starts at 4:05 PDT!

ALMS 2007 Long Beach

The two Audi R10 TDI sportscars start the third round of the American Le Mans Series in Long Beach as fastest LM P1 prototypes from the second and the third rows of the grid. In qualifying on Friday, Dindo Capello drove his 650 hp Audi R10 TDI to the fourth fastest time behind three lighter LM P2 sports cars. In sunny and warm conditions, Emanuele Pirro in the “sister” Audi was second in the LM P1 category and sixth overall. He was only 0.067 seconds behind fifth place.

After the double win of the Audi R10 TDI in the city race in St. Petersburg two weeks ago, the race on the former Formula One track in California is the second street race in succession. In the first appearance of the American Le Mans Series in Long Beach, the preparation for the drivers and technicians was very difficult. For all four Audi drivers, the challenging track in the harbor area of Long Beach was a new challenge with only a 45 minute practice session before qualifying. With a length of 100 minutes, Saturday’s race is the shortest in the history of the ALMS.

LG, Volkswagen tie on Beetle MP3 player

LG Electronics is teaming up with car-maker Volkswagen on a digital media player styled along the lines of the New Beetle car.

The player sports an aluminum body and will be available in three of the same colors as the car: Salsa Red, Shadow Blue and Sunflower Yellow, said Judy Pae, a spokeswoman for LG in South Korea.

The design of the player’s user interface was inspired by the car, and the device also has a small VW badge on the front panel and a New Beetle logo on it’s rear. However, the inspiration doesn’t extend to the shape of the player, which looks like other MP3 players on the market.

The specifications are fairly standard for a media player of its class. It has a 2.4-inch color LCD (liquid crystal display) screen and can play MPEG-4, Windows Media Video 9, MP3, Windows Media Audio and Ogg-format files.

There are two embedded flash games and it will be available in 2G-byte and 4G-byte versions. LG says the battery will provide about 20 hours of music playback and enough time to watch around three hours of video.

While the player got its unveiling at this week’s Seoul Motor Show plans for its commercial launch have yet to be decided, said Pae.

PC World AU

I guess Volkswagen wasn’t content with making their cars iPod compatible they wanted their own VW branded PMP to bandy around so they have hooked up with LG for their own PMP. To brand the PMP as a VW it will be made with styling similar to that of the new Beetle car with VW logos and such. The player will have an aluminum body and come in three of the same colors the cars offers; Salsa Red, Shadow Blue, and Sunflower Yellow. Thankfully the thing isn’t shaped like the Beetle though which would look odd, but is shaped like the other PMPs around in the common candy bar style. The unit uses a 2.4 inch LCD and can play MPEG-4, Windows Media Video 9, MP3, WMA and Ogg formats. The battery is said to last for about 20 hours for music and about three hours for music. No word on launch date or price at this time. There is also no word on if the PMP will come with a flower holder.

DTM Day 3: Ekström on top; Audi 1-2-3

I was bit premature with the reporting ;) Looks like Eki came back to post a 1:23:009 just missing the 1:22’s.

DTM: Day 3

Not a bad debut for Rockenfeller during the test week at Oschersleben. He took top honors with a 1:23:161 followed by Ekström with a 1:23:326

Roughly a second off of Kristensen who has been the only one to hit the 1:22’s this week.

24 Polo-Cup juniors

ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup

The ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup starts the 2007 season on 22 April at Hockenheim with 24 competitors representing five nations.

The 16 to 24-year old junior racers completed their pre-season preparations with a two-day introductory course at Oschersleben – on the agenda were numerous practice sessions on track as well as media, regulation and technique seminars. They had already completed a fitness training session in March at the Armed Forces Sport Challenge Group (Bundeswehr-Sportfördergruppe) in Bischofswiesen close to Berchtesgaden in South Germany.

“The introductory course gives every participant the opportunity to test the Race-Polo extensively under similar conditions and to prepare themselves systematically for the season. No extra tests are permitted in order to preserve both performance parity and low costs,” explains Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “The lap times were very close at the end, and in fact the first ten were separated by less than one second.”

The 24 car Polo-Cup runners from Germany, Norway, Austria, Sweden and South Africa were able to test the 150 hp Race-Pole extensively and, in part, reeled off more than 450 kilometres at Oschersleben. The team of instructors, headed by Benedikt große Darrelmann, brought the touring-car newcomers step-by-step up to race speed. “The young participants were initially able to learn the circuit during the roll-out on wet weather tyres. Afterwards the slicks were mounted and the speed increased. We kept a watchful eye on the drivers from track side and later gave specific tips to each driver on how they could improve their times. We practised standing starts with a complete grid,” explains große Darrelmann, who is assisted in his work as Volkswagen Chief Instructor by Jimmy Johansson and René Rast, Volkswagen Juniors and Polo-Cup overall winners in the last two years.

Eight cup competitors – including fast lady Marleen Seilheimer from Mettenheim – are already familiar with the Race-Polo and fought last year for wins and points. Sixteen juniors however celebrate their debuts. The “Touring Car School’s” sporting regulations remain unchanged in 2007 and are conceived to cultivate the closest possible performance parity and comparatively low costs. This is also guaranteed by the Volkswagen Polo race versions which are identical down to the smallest bolt, centrally controlled race preparation and swapping of cars from race to race between competitors.

DTM Day two: Audi one-two on Wednesday

When it comes to testing, the situation always seems to be the same: throughout the day, changes on the time sheets are rare. Everybody completes his testing programme while trying at the same time to not reveal his true competitiveness. Then, in the closing stages of the test session, the car is shod with a fresh set of tyres, the driver completes one or two fast laps - and with a little luck, he secures a top position on the time sheets. Tom Kristensen’s domination on day two of the test, however, was undisputed. The seven-time Le Mans winner, who had also been the quickest on Tuesday, again set the fastest lap time of the day.

On the quickest of the 128 laps Kristensen completed on Wednesday, the Dane crossed the line in 1:22.808 minutes - some 0.2 seconds faster than on Tuesday. The second fastest of the day was Kristensen’s fellow Audi driver Timo Scheider. Yet, with 0.452 seconds, Kristensen’s lead over the German was a rather clear one. At the same time, Alexandros Margaritis in his 2006-spec AMG-Mercedes C-Class finished third, thus proving to be the quickest Mercedes-Benz driver.

Audi’s new signing Alexandre Prémat, who joined the test action on Wednesday, finished fourth, ahead of Daniel la Rosa, with a Mercedes-Benz quartet - DTM Record Champion Bernd Schneider, Paul di Resta, Bruno Spengler and Jamie Green - taking positions six, seven, eight and nine respectively. Lucas Luhr completed the top ten.

DTM returnee Gary Paffett finished eleventh on his first day in the official DTM tests held at Oschersleben, while Susie Stoddart prevailed in the season’s first battle of the racing ladies: the Scot came twelfth, with Audi A4 DTM driver Vanina Ickx finishing 15th. Mattias Ekström completed just five laps. The Swede executed just the roll-out, at the wheel of his new racer for the 2007 season but on Thursday, he will join the test action in anger.
