With race wins for 2007 championship leader Joe Fulbrook and reigning champion Paul Taylor, today’s (Sunday) third and fourth rounds of the Volkswagen Racing Cup provided not only interesting results but also some exciting action.
Fulbrook drove his Bora Turbo from pole position to chequered flag in the day’s opening race to claim his third consecutive victory in the Hankook-backed championship - overcoming challenges from Taylor and Steve Wood to do so - while Taylor got his title defence back on track in race two with an untroubled win in his Golf R32.
Fulbrook may have had things all his own way at Oulton Park a fortnight ago but the Berkshire man and his Warranty Direct-backed Bora were made to work hard every inch of the way in the first of the Donington dices.
Fulbrook had annexed pole position by a two-tenth margin from Steve Wood in qualifying but neither of the front row men was able to make the most of his advantage come the start of the race.
Instead it was the superior off-the-line traction of Taylor’s four-wheel-drive Golf which won the drag race from row two down to Redgate Corner, with Wood slotting past Fulbrook as Joe scrabbled for grip. ‘I very nearly lost it completely at the first corner,’ said Fulbrook. ‘The rear end just went away from me and I was lucky to get it back.’
Undeterred, Smokin’ Joe quickly set about making up his lost ground and found a way past Wood’s second-placed GTI through Schwantz Curve on the second lap. Two laps later his target was the lead… Taylor, Fulbrook and Wood exited Coppice virtually three abreast, with Fulbrook able to outdrag his rivals for top spot down the Dunlop Straight.

Tom Kristensen escaped from a monster crash in the DTM opener at Hockenheim with lots of pain, but nothing broken.

The Dane was hit by team mate Alex Prémat after an accident straight after Turn 2: “I can remember small fragments from the first lap. I was fighting for position, but was left without room by me team mate Tino Scheider. I was squeezed towards the side and had to ride the curbs, because I didn’t want to push back on Timo. The car spun and I suddenly was on middle of the track. I remember smoke from the tires - then nothing.”

F************CK Ya!
After 5 years of winning at Hockenheim, Audi beats AMG on their home track! Mattias Ekström is going to be hot this year! The champion of 2004 had a rough season in 2006 and leading up to he first race of this season, has look great!
..Mercedes-Benz has been unbeaten at Hockenheim since October, 2002. The last non-Mercedes-Benz-victory was achieved by Laurent Aiello with the Abt-Audi TT-R on April 21, 2002.
Mattias started on second row, 4th in qualifying. It came down to the wire really with Ekström moving into the lead after the last pitstop. I’m still working on the German translation.
I will say, Mercedes-AMG did follow from 3rd-9th with Audi’s Timo Scheider filling the 10th spot. unfortunately there was carnage at turn 1 and we lost Tom Kristensen. Not a good start to his championship hopes.

McNish is on it! I mean he is not taking any shit today! I didn’t get the start so I’m not sure if McNish got the jump on green. Allan McNish passed Brabham just past the start-finish line. Werner in the #2 Audi is in 3rd right now. I am happy to say a RS Spyder is in between so it’s not as bad as an Acura.
The LMP2 is insane right now with Dyson and Diaz going at it!
In GT2, Flying Lizard sits in 2nd and 3rd but 14 and 20secs back.

* As I type, again, Werner smacks a wall with the #2 Audi and back to 9th now… grrrrrrrrrr The #2 Audi is now back second from last with the crash… F*CK!
