Volkswagen R GTI

Transforming a rich past ito a promosing future

LAS VEGAS — Thirty years ago Volkswagen launched the GTI, the “hot hatch” that would revolutionize the concept of affordable and accessible high-performance motoring. Now comes the R GTI, a look forward into the future of compact car performance, making its debut at the 2006 SEMA Show in Las Vegas on October 31.

R GTI

Over its four generations, the GTI has grown larger, its technology more sophisticated and powerplants more muscular, but Volkswagen has never abandoned the formula that made the GTI badge an instant icon of affordable, exhilarating performance — a big-hearted engine beating in a compact, usefully shaped and lightweight platform.

Few cars have enjoyed such an enduring run of success, and to honor the GTI’s rich past, Volkswagen has cast an eye on the GTI of tomorrow with the R GTI, a low-flying stealth machine developed by Volkswagen Chief Designer Derek Jenkins and his talented crew at the Volkswagen Design Center California, located in Santa Monica. With its striking carbon-fiber body panels, four-passenger sports car interior, powerful turbocharged engine and competition-bred suspension, the R GTI is a stimulating fusion of style and dynamic excellence, fully modern in content and achievement yet staying true to such longstanding Volkswagen values as drivability, durability and utility. VW Thunder Bunny

A New Performance Variation On An Old-School Theme

LAS VEGAS — Volkswagen introduces a concept vehicle that reflects its roots in the sport compact tuning community.

The story began back in the early ‘80s, with a man named Bill Neumann. Bill founded the California based tuning firm Automotive Performance Systems (APS). He was frustrated with the fact that Volkswagen’s hot hatchback GTI had been sold in Germany since 1976, but hadn’t yet come to America. Bill had driven the GTI in Europe on several of his parts-searching trips, and he was convinced it would be a big hit in America. So he sent letters to the factory. He wrote to enthusiast magazines and lobbied Volkswagen dealers for support. Then, he put together the proof that a Rabbit-based performance car was capable of generating both stunning performance numbers and lots of attention from the American automotive press corp.

Thus was born the original Thunder Bunny.

The APS-modified Rabbit was delivered to Motor Trend magazine late in 1981. Even though its staff was use to driving the best cars in the world, they were blown away by the little Volkswagen hatchback. As it was written in the March 1982 issue: “The little white wonder packs its own kind of lightning-quick rabbit punch — one that’s guaranteed to kayo unsuspecting boulevard bullies.” And when Road & Track magazine got its hands on the car, it reported a zero to 60-mph run in the low seven-second range and slalom times that at the time had been bettered only by the Ferrari 512 Boxer, Lamborghini Countach and Renault R5 Turbo. Exalted company, indeed. Continue reading ‘VW Thunder Bunny’

Volkswagen showcases euro-tuning at SEMA

LAS VEGAS – Volkswagen of America, Inc. showcases its commitment to Euro-Tuning at this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show. This year marks the return of Volkswagen to SEMA, following up on a successful debut in 2005.

Volkswagen is about personalization, high quality, and style, coming together in a package backed by a factory warranty. With beautiful fit, finish, and styling from the tires up, Volkswagen’s positioning reflects the way they build vehicles, and it is at the heart of everything they do. As a result, Volkswagens are a distinct canvas for tuners.

“Bringing the Volkswagen Brand to SEMA a second year is gratifying for all of us. We are committed to offering distinctly VW platforms for personalization and performance. ‘Pimp’ is about ego and bombast. We are different – we are about distinctly German performance and styling,”

said Ken Gurney, general manager, Parts and Accessories.

The Rabbit is North America’s most affordable European car starting at $14,990, and the easiest entry into what Volkswagen calls Euro-Tuning. Less is sometimes more as demonstrated with Volkswagen’s latest in styling components delivered to the SEMA floor. Starting with a ground effects package, its front chin spoiler, side skirts, rear bumper and sporty diffuser, create a completely new lowered appearance for only $1,675. For the Rabbit’s shoes, Volkswagen offers a pre-mounted tire and wheel program. Giving this car a completely new demeanor, it is shod with 18×8-inch machine-finished Vision V alloy wheels, wrapped in high-performance 225/40R18 Michelin tires. To top off the styling package, this Rabbit sports a hatch spoiler and showcases the many appearance items available in Volkswagen’s current Genuine Accessories catalog. Owners looking for practical complements to protect their investment can choose splashguards, rubber mats, or trunk liners. A custom roof-rack system, with attachments suitable for many types of gear, is also available.

Last year, the RGT Passat Concept stirred interest among SEMA attendees with its striking appearance. A year later, Volkswagen is proud to announce that it will be installing the RGT inspired Hi-Def appearance package as on option for the Passat sedan, with availability beginning in December 2006. Passat owners with the Hi-Def appearance package will be an exclusive group as kits will be available in a limited number of colors, with installations to be limited to 2,000 units.

Complementing the Hi-Def appearance package, and factory-installed sport suspension, the SEMA display Passat wears a set of 18×8-inch Velos alloy wheels finished in diamond black with 235/40R18 Pirelli performance tires. As with many other Genuine Volkswagen Accessories, these wheels are available as options when ordering a new Passat sedan or wagon.

High quality and OEM fit are the two most important requirements of a Genuine Volkswagen Accessory. Genuine Volkswagen Accessories are designed to enhance a Volkswagen’s look without compromising comfort or safety. Buyers also have the option to incorporate the cost of accessories into their new-car financing. Volkswagen’s New Car Warranty is extended to Genuine Volkswagen Accessories, as well.

My thoughts on Frentzen and his reactions

Heinz-Harold FrentzenFrentzen, come on man. Don’t be a puss! This is racing and it’s the DTM. This is not F1.

You need to perform. Your history with Opel is so-so. You can’t come to Audi and think that you deserve better if your resume isn’t!

Let’s take a look:
In 2004 you entered DTM joining with Opel. You finished 14th that season overall.
In 2005 you stayed with Opel and finished 8th. You had one Pole in which you finished 3rd.

You have 2 seasons under your belt and your a mid to back of the field racer. There are tons of up/downs in DTM as well as all other series. Look at Tom, he’s kills it and probably would have taken the series but he had a bunch of issues. Is he crying? Storming off and quiting?

How about Eki? 8th in 2001, 3rd in 2002, 4th in 2003, Champ in 2004, 2nd in 2005 and had a shitty year this season. He stuck it out. He had some great showing but also some not so good ones.. he placed 8th right behind you!

Do we want to go with Tomzyck who placed 4th this year overall? He has 6 seasons now under his belt!

Kristensen? Ha, your not in the same league!

If you think it’s greener, then call up AMG!

Ok. Off my soap box!
